Beyond the tread of fate
Summary: The "war games" were anything but games. It was a ploy to kill off more riders without having to get blood on their hands.
Word count: 2.8k
Authors note: Hi everyone, I think I'm going to make this into a series but as always I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions! And if you have any requests or ideas on what I should do next please let me know! and ways happy reading!!
“We have never seen a signet as strong as hers.” The breathy voice a few yards away shook Bodhi to his core. “There has never been a signet like this to begin with.” Another voice counters.
Never did you think your signet would be something so strong and powerful. The ability to not only see parts of the future but to alter it, to put it simply, is insane. You knew that having a powerful signet was good in more ways than one but that also meant it put an even bigger target on your back. If other riders in the quadrant didn’t want to kill you before for having the markings of the rebellion relic, they definitely do now.
But unfortunately for them you did not come this far, survive for this long, to only come this far. Each day after threshing posed a threat to your survival. Leadership now had a keen eye on you unlike before where they would simply spare you a glance before moving onto something they thought to be more interesting, not that you minded. Now it seemed that almost everyone in the leadership positions took a new liking to breathing down your back at all times of the day. There was no doubt in your mind that they were trying to find a way for you to cement yourself as a tool used for destruction at their hands, little did they know that you would die before pledging even more loyalty to them then you already have.
Your acts of slight rebellion were starting to catch up with you, having drawn the attention of not only general Melgren but also general Sorrengail. And you swore that if the soul of Malek wasn’t reincarnated into this death trap of a college, wasn’t trying to kill you, then the generals most definitely would take it upon themselves. And something told you that Malek would be more merciful.
As a third year it wasn’t uncommon to be called to the midland posts and with your signet there was no doubt that those so called leaders would let you venture more they deemed necessary. Needless to say you weren’t surprised when it was announced that the so called attack was simply “Was games.” Nothing in this horrendous college was simply a game. It was a way of killing off people without having to do any of the work.
Dain was attempting to get you to go with him and violet as a guise of keeping Violet safe while Xaden wasn’t with her. Except you would rather be roasted by a dragon then go anywhere with the overgrown toddler of a squad leader. Xaden wouldn’t allow it and neither would Bodhi. That's how you found yourself in the air formation of Xadens personal picks heading outside of the wards. Even without your powers you knew that something was off, you could feel it, and so could everyone else. But without the ability to talk with Xaden or Bodhi while in the air, you keep your thoughts to yourself and focus on making a game plan with what little information you had.
It was no surprise to land at the outpost and see that it was completely empty. Not only was leadership testing Xadens loyalty but they were testing everyone else who was with him. You didn’t need your signet to see that one coming. Having been the child of parents who were in the rebellion you knew all those creatures in the stories told to young children weren’t simply a story, but instead the truth. And they were coming right at the town of the outpost. “Well that’s definitely not good.” you mumble under your breath while turning back to the group of riders that were looking towards Xaden. “What's not good?” Bodhi asked with concern, effectively halting all conversation. Without answering you motioned over your shoulder and moved to the side allowing others to see what you saw mere seconds ago. A beat of silence passes before a murmur of a colorful string of cuss words rang out from all directions. “Are those what I think they are?” a marked second year asks, voice quivering in fear. This wasn’t the first time you’ve seen those horrid creatures, Venin without a doubt would not be winning any beauty awards. The freakishly bright eyes and dark crawling veins marking their face mix with the ability to draw power and energy from not only the earth itself but from living things was terrifying enough without their looks.
Not everyone wanted to be a dragon rider but a deal was a deal. Be allowed to live as a dragon rider or die trying. You couldn’t blame the paleing second year; those creatures were not the most appealing thing to look at. Without answering the scared girl, you, Bodhi, Xaden and Garrick share a look coming to the same decision. You would not let all of those innocent people die.As the older children of the rebellion the knowledge you had about venin and wyverns allowed you to know the immense damage they were capable of inflicting upon those in the village down the hill from the outpost. Before Xaden could get a word out the same second year cut him off. “There's no way we are going down there right?” She rubs her palms against the leathers on her legs looking like she just might pass out. That's not a good sign.
With a sigh you look out to the impending doom before turning back around. “Judge if you want, we’re all going to die at some point anyways. And I don’t know about you but I intend to deserve it.” At your words Bodhi rolls his neck while a very long and tired sigh slips past his lips. You were going to be the death of him. “Will you please stop saying things like that?” Your boyfriend pleads. Laughing you beckon for Xaden to start giving orders while moving to stand by Bodhi's side. Under normal circumstances you would never dare to show so much affection towards Bodhi for fear of the harm others might seek out to bring you harm through hurting him. But these were all marked children, people who knew what was on the line. That this was the only true family left remaining, and while some may be scared to put there skill to use and fight they wouldn’t dare dream of betraying those who take care of them,
Silently you wrap your arm around Bodhi's waist tucking yourself into him while listening to your wingleader. Bodhi draps an arm around your shoulders taking in what he is sure is going to be the last few moments of calmness before things inevitably go south. Xaden finishes giving out commands sending people scurrying back to their dragons. The cousins share a glance and Xaden gives a slight nod, understanding the two of you need a moment alone.
“Bo you know I will do everything in my power to come back to you, right?” You see flashes of fear darting around his eyes and you want nothing more than to soothe his worrying. “I know my love but-” He pauses looking out into the distance. “We both know that there is no guarantee that we survive this. I’m more than ok going out protecting those who can’t protect themselves. And I know that you would be strong enough to survive my death but me? There is nothing in this world that would stop me from following you to Malek.” He finishes by wrapping his other arm around you and pulling you flush against him. For a second nothing is said while both of you take in every detail of the person before you, as this could very well be the last time you ever see each other.
“You know that I don’t make promises Bo, especially ones that I can’t keep. But hear me when I say this.” The gentle feeling of your hands against his cheeks is a feeling he memorizes just in case “There is nothing, and I mean nothing, that can keep me from you ok? I promise no matter what I will come back to you even if it's the last thing I do.” You hold out your pinky finger in a silent promise. You watch as he glances down to your outstretched hand before looking back up at you. “You come back to me.” That wasn’t a statement that was an order. “Yes sir!” The sharp salute at odd with your intertwined pinkies brings a smile to his face. Even while on the verge of possibly dying you still manage to keep a positive attitude. And that was something he truly admired about you.
Your slight step back causes Bodhi to tighten his grip on you. “uh -uh, you’re not leaving without giving me a kiss.” Bodhi watches as your face lights up in joy. Leaning forward your lips hover right above his but you make no move to follow through with your action. Gently you drape your arms over his shoulders, lightly running your hands though that curly hair of his that you love so much. Bodhi was getting tired of waiting for you to kiss him and from the sly smile gracing your lips he knew exactly what you were doing. Removing one hand from your waist he brings it up to cup your cheek. His fingers tickle where they rest on the back of your neck. His other hand tightens on your waist and for a moment he does nothing but stroke your cheek lovingly. Tilting your head up slightly you look into those eyes that never fail to capture all of your attention. “I love you.” Pulling him in slightly you stop leaving your lips ghosting over his. “I love you too.” The kiss that ensued was gentle yet passionate. Full of hope and promise to survive. Pulling away your eyes dart between his. “You come back to me ok?” The words fight to get out over the lump forming in your throat. “Yes ma'am!” Bodhi returns the salute you gave him earlier. With one last kiss to your forehead he pulls away, not daring to move until you walk back to where Eden, your dragon, was waiting for you.
The slight bite you have on your lips is the only indication that you were nervous, but Bodhi watched as you took a deep breath and swallowed the fear in your throat. Within seconds fear washed away and in its wake confidence returned. The roll of your shoulders and tilt of your head set in certainty assured him that you would be just fine. Or at least he hoped.
The swift turn of your heel in the broken pieces of cement propelled you forward and away from him. Not once did you look back. You couldn’t let him see the fear in your eyes. Bodhi watched as you mounted the back of Eden and took off to the skies. “Malek I swear if you try to take her from me, I will kill you myself.” He promises in a whisper under his breath “She can handle herself.” Cuir says firmly “especially with that signet of hers.”
Power was gaining strength beneath your skin, traveling in all directions until it encompassed every inch of your body. The warm buzzing sensation dancing under your skin brought you to life in ways you can’t explain. The cold crisp air from the high altitude should litter the exposed parts of your body in goosebumps but instead warmth radiates outwards before mixing with the cool air and disappearing as Eden flies towards the Venin.
“Lets kick some ass shall we?” Chuffing sounds from Eden in approval “I thought you would never ask considering you had yourself entangled with Cuirs rider.” The dragon beneath you doesn’t need to look to see that you're rolling your eyes at her remark. “I’m going to choose to ignore that statement considering we have more important things to focus on.” Vibrations of what could only be assumed as dragon laughter rumbles underneath your body before Eden plummets down to the village in need of help.
Being able to see and alter the future was both a blessing and a curse. It took countless hours grounding and learning how to control the gift Eden bestowed upon you. Thankfully though all the learning curves you uncovered more than the ability to gain insight on how to change the future when eventually happens. You learned to alter the present, also allowing you to change the future. “They want something in that tower.” Eden's voice rings out in your head causing you to look down. “Do we know what's in there?” For a moment she doesn’t respond until you see two riders dismount from their dragons and make their way to the tower. “We are about to find out.”
Venin were already wreaking havoc on the village and they had just gotten started. While in the air you could see buildings as they were being blown up and paths of fire being created. For now you would keep your power building beneath the surface and help where needed. As much as you had learned to not let this immense power overwhelm you, the ability to control the toll it took on your body was something you had yet to master. You would only unleash the power when absolutely necessary.
The swift turn of Violet and Tairn pulled your attention away from the ground and back on the skyline. “You’ve got to be shitting me!” The sight of two wyvern appearing in the sky redirected Eden's attention to where Tairn was being closely followed. Just as one of the wyvern was going in to bite Tairn tail Eden slid beneath dragging her daggertail through its stomach. The pull of Eden's wings being tucked in tight to her body sent you spiraling back down to the earth only leveling out a few hundred feet above the town. An angry roar of pain sounded behind you and without having to look you knew the wretched creature was following. “Well if it wasn’t mad before it is now.” Glancing over your shoulder you see the deformed version of a dragon snap its teeth in hopes of taking a chunk of Eden with it. Instead Eden spins upside down before correcting herself to be upright again. No matter how many times she did that you swore it would always make your heart stop and hands sweat. You’ve seen countless riders die from that maneuver. You didn’t want to be added to the count. “Stop fretting, I would have caught you.” Her distaste for your worrying should have left no room for argument but that didn’t stop you. “Aren’t you the one who said if the rider can’t stay on their dragon then they deserve to fall?”
“I never said anything about that applying to my rider.” She was a hypocrite if you ever did meet one. “I heard that, you know? Would you rather I let you fall to your death?” Your answer never made it out of your mouth as you watch Liam fall from his dragon. Without thinking you let your power free from its confines. Gold yet iridescent string indicating the countless versions of the future spread out before you. Pulling on the string where Liam and Deigh were able to avoid the wyvern, catapults Liam back to his dragon flying past the wyvern avoiding the strike you had no doubt would have killed your friend. Liam and Deigh glanced at you knowing you redirected history. Winking you smiled at the pair letting them know you had their backs. The alteration sends ripples of shifting light speckled with iridescent gold flying out in all directions in the air. “It seems we have caught someone's attention.” The slight tilt Eden makes provides a clear line of sight to the Verin below. It stood in one spot looking up and directly at you. For a second they stood unmoving until it raised the staff and launched enough energy to crumple a building. “Shit! Eden, turn right, turn right!” Your voice wavers in fear of the destructive energy hitting your dragon. Listening to your words Eden stops with a harsh beat of her wings pitching herself completely vertical narrowly avoiding the blast. The sudden change in angle with no warning spends you flying down her scaley back. “Eden!” you scream pierces her ears as you officially fly off of her back. Time seems to stand still as you dive straight to the ground. There would be no way Eden could save you in time. With the angle of your fall and how she is positioned, if she were to move her tail would likely collide with your falling body effectively killing you. There was nothing Eden could do. She couldn’t save her rider.

Could you do one with Xaden where reader gets hurt during training and he almost loses his shit? I can totally see him and Sygael, along with readers dragon of course, wanting to find the person who hurt them and burn them to a ✨crisp✨ lol.
Gotta have your daily protective and caring shadow boy lol
Injured
Xaden x reader
A/n: not me expanding the No One Left Behind universe (like that’s a thing lol) Cadmus is a beast in this one, he is taking no one’s shit. That sweet puppy dog dragon is gone for now.
Warnings: canon typical violence, mentions of injuries
Sgaeyl had told Xaden what happened seconds before Liam came and got him, panting and out of breath only wheezing out your name. He was now out pacing Liam on the way to the infirmary.
Amon had once again pulled a dangerous stunt during flight training. Flight training. The one time of day no sparring was supposed to happen. Xaden wanted to kill the little prick. He went too far this time and Xaden was at his limit with giving Amon chances.
Pushing the doors open Xaden scans the beds looking for you. His eyes find you on a bed on the far right of the room. You looked pissed as you messed with the bandage around your hand and arm.
You didn’t notice him until he was sitting next to you on the bed, gently taking your hand in his so you’d stop picking at the wraps. You looked up at him and you were fuming.
Xaden scanned your face taking in your injuries. There were cuts all over your face and dried blood coming from your nostrils and smattered on your nose. A nasty bruise went from your temple to your jaw. Xaden picked up the wet cloth on the bedside table, gently wiping the blood from your face.
“You ok sweetheart?” You flopped back on the bed letting out an agitated sound. “I swear I’m going to kill Amon next time I see him.” Xaden wanted to laugh but this wasn’t a joke. “Can I leave yet? I hate the smell in here.”
Xaden nodded, helping you up as you winced from the shooting pain in your ribs. As you walked to Xaden’s room you told him about what happened at flight training. Amon and his poorly behaved dragon attacked you and Cadmus in an impromptu fighting exercise.
Cadmus was thankfully unharmed and went on the offensive quicker than you could tell him to. You had never seen or heard him so pissed off, or using so many swear words. He was so well mannered. Of course Cadmus got Sgaeyl involved, who told Xaden immediately.
“Would it make you feel better to know they’re currently plotting their revenge on Amon?” You let out a laugh, relaxing on Xaden’s soft black covers. “Yes actually. I’d love to see Cadmus lose his mind. Is that why he cut me off?”
You spent that night in Xaden’s arms as he whispered loving words and promises of protecting you, never letting anything like this happen again.
The next afternoon you heard about the beating Xaden gave Amon during morning training. It was so bad Dain had to step in and pull Amon away from Xaden while Garrick, Liam, and Imogen had to restrain him.
Once Amon recovered you were both back at flight training. Xaden was overseeing your squad for the time being, just to make sure Amon understood his death threats were serious.
You had never seen Cadmus look so terrifying, it also didn’t help that he and Sgaeyl were next to each other glowering at anyone who looked at them. Even you were scared to approach him until you heard his voice in your head. “We’re just making sure we get our point across. It’s ok, I’d never hurt you y/n.”
You smile up at him and mount in the saddle, preparing for take off. Xaden mounted after you shooting you a grin once in his saddle.
Looking out at the field you saw Amon. Gods he looked awful. Xaden really did a number on him. “Sgaeyl showed me. It was wonderful, I’d never been so happy to see a fight.” He let out a huff which you took as his laugh.
Once up in the air Cadmus insisted you stay at the back. Just in case anyone tries to attack so he could be ready this time. You weren’t fully convinced by his tone but went with it anyway. Who were you to question the wisdom of a century old dragon?
About an hour in you had a feeling Cadmus was up to something. The squad was flying over a mountain pass you usually avoided because it was a third year course. And Sgaeyl was slowly making her way next to Cadmus.
They gave each other a look that made you and Xaden panic. Then they started to climb at an alarming rate. Their wings beating loudly as wind rushed past you, making you flatten yourself to the saddle. “Cadmus!” You yelled at him. “What are you doing?” “Doing what I should’ve done in the first place.”
Oh shit. That wasn’t good. You thought Xaden was joking when he said they were plotting. Looking down you noticed the other dragons had peeled off, leaving Amon alone to hover over the pass.
Passing each other, Sgaeyl and Cadmus dove for them. Amon’s dragon took the offensive too late and Cadmus got a chunk of his side, biting down hard enough causing the dragon let out an ear piercing shriek.
Letting go he flapped away best he could but Sgaeyl was ahead corralling him. Cadmus let out a roar that you’d never heard from him before. It shook the world around you causing your grip to tighten on him.
Unhinging his jaw as wide as he could, Cadmus let out a gust of flame in Amons direction. His dragon flailed and Sgaeyl went for its eyes. They started dropping fast, his dragon going lifeless. Unfortunately, one of Amon’s friends brought him on his dragon before the loud thud of the dragons body echoed around the mountains.
You couldn’t look away. In awe of what just happened. At least Amon would be a little less dangerous from Now on.
Later that night you were sitting in front of the hearth in the common room staring into the crackling flames as you went over the days events again. You couldn’t stop hearing the echoing thud or the silence from Amon as his dragon died. The way he felt nothing for the thing he was connected too didn’t sit right with you.
Xaden silently approached letting his shadows softly caress you to alert you to his presence. “Hey sweetheart.” You hum acknowledging him. Sitting down, he kisses you on your head. He places a hand on your back to comfort you. “Thinking about today?”
“Yeah.” You said absentmindedly. “I’m not upset they did that. I mean, I am a little. A warning would’ve been nice.” You both let out a chuckle. “Did you know?” “No.” You believe him from the seriousness of his tone.
“What’s still bothering you?” “How Amon didn’t care. At least that’s what it looked like to me. I’d be distraught if that was Cadmus.” Xaden wrapped his arm around your shoulders, resting his head on yours. “I know. He’s a psychopath. But we’ll see what happens.”
You let out another hum, relaxing into his warmth. At least you were safe in the skies now.

our girl - d.a + x.r.
Dain Aetos x reader x Xaden Riorson You and Xaden have been hooking up for a while now, but Threshing throws a wrench (and another person) into your relationship. [request] words: 2.5k (went a little overboard lol, this dynamic was so fun to think about) 🏷: FOURTH WING AND IRON FLAME SPOILERS. NSFW at the end. she/her reader. I did this one a little differently; a full scene with dialogue, and then headcanons about what the relationship would be like (sfw, nsfw + angst; I apologize in advance…) banner made by user cafekitsune!
You dismount, managing to land on your feet. Maybe the gauntlet had been good practice after all, and not just a form of torture. The flight field is slowly filling in with dragons and their chosen riders. Dain is standing next to you with a massive red daggertail. Nice.
Your two dragons look at each other, and for a moment you’re worried they’re going to start a fight, but they just bump heads softly. They’re… friends?
Then Dain’s dragon turns toward you, looking you in the eye, and you freeze, holding completely still as it sniffs you. You must pass inspection, because he pulls back after a few seconds, satisfied, but you don’t dare move, your heart still pounding.
“Relax, girl. I will not hurt you.”
You startle at the second voice speaking to you, stumbling back in shock. A shimmering red string has appeared beside the soft blue one you share with Lann. You tug on it gently, and Dain’s eyes snap toward you, having felt the pull.
“They’re mated.”
“Smart boy,” Cath purrs.
You’re still trying to get used to having another being speaking in your head, hearing your every thought, but now you have two?
You don’t have time to complain about it before Xaden comes running toward you.
Both Lann and Cath stand taller, flaring their nostrils. Cath looks like he’s contemplating how Xaden would taste.
Xaden comes to a stop a few yards away, not wanting to provoke them. It’s easy enough for him to put it together, seeing Dain standing behind you with the mated pair. “Is this some kind of joke?”
Cath blows a puff of foul-smelling steam at Xaden in warning. “Tell him to watch his tone.”
You don’t.
“This wasn’t supposed to happen,” Xaden says, a look in his eye you’ve never seen before; pure anger.
You take a step back, bumping into Lann’s foreleg. She curls her neck down, placing her head between your body and Xaden’s. You’ve only been bonded all of ten minutes, but she’s already willing to protect you with her life.
“It wasn’t her fault,” Dain challenges, crossing his arms. “Nor is it mine.”
Your stomach flips. You’d never expected that Dain would be the one defending you here.
“I should gut you before the bond gets any stronger,” Xaden threatens. What is he so mad for?
“You of all people should know that the consequences can be dire. You won’t risk her life in that way.”
“What the hell are the two of you talking about?” You ask, but they don’t answer, too busy threatening each other.
“Human males and their arguing,” Lann sighs. “Were they dragons, they’d fight to the death and the victor would keep you.”
“That remains a possibility,” you reply quietly, still watching the two of them. Xaden certainly looks like he’s contemplating murder right now.
“I could just incinerate him, but Sgaeyl would have my head if I did,” Cath muses, sounding bored. “And you seem attached.”
You turn to glare at him. “Not funny.”
“Threats from someone your size are only humorous,” Cath replies, still watching the two men argue.
“Like it or not, Riorson, she’s my responsibility now,” Dain says firmly. What is that supposed to mean? Why does Dain care all of a sudden if you live or die?
“Do not forget that you have a voice in this matter, too,” Lann adds.
She’s right.
“Quit it, both of you!” You interrupt before they can come to blows, and both boys turn toward you, quieting. “Stop talking about me like I’m not even here!”
Their eyes soften.
“Darling, I didn’t mean-“ Xaden begins.
You cross your arms over your chest, glaring up at the boy. “I’m not done,” you say, and he falls silent. “Dain’s right; neither of us asked for this, but it happened, and there’s no changing it now. I know you two hate each other, but I will not have you two fighting over me like I’m some kind of object. Neither of you have any claim to me. I’m not your girlfriend, and even if I was, you still don’t own me. I’m an adult, I can make my own decisions and keep myself safe.”
Neither of them respond, silent and guilty as your words settle in.
“And that is why I chose you,” Lann says proudly.
You ignore the compliment, stepping away from her and turning to leave, swiping the tears from your cheeks.
“I apologize, shrewd one.”
“It’s okay,” you say quietly. “You didn’t know.”
—————————————————
“Professor Kaori?” You ask quietly. “Can I ask you a few questions?”
He already knows why you’re here. “I heard about you and Aetos. Cath and Lann have been mated for nearly two centuries. Their bond is strong.”
“Have you known many other pairs like them?”
“A few,” he answers. “Dragons can live for millennia. Unlike us, they do not fall in love at age twenty, and they are quite selective with their partner. It is a lifelong commitment for them, and not one they take lightly.”
“And their riders?” You ask, holding your breath.
“A pair at Montserrat, who are now married, and another pair who regard each other like blood sisters.”
He doesn’t mention anyone like you and Dain, who hardly know each other and don’t really care to.
“I‘ll make this clear with you, cadet, as you need to know this and accept it; you and Aetos will be stuck together until the end of your days. The four of you must exist as a functional unit. The grief of one of your deaths may be enough to end you all.”
Your eyes widen. So that’s why Xaden had been so pissed.
“You are both excellent students who will undoubtedly become skilled riders,” Kaori says. “Get to know each other in the coming weeks, and settle your differences sooner than later. The health of your relationship, even if it remains strictly professional, is vital.”
You thank him quietly, heading back to your room. You don’t have time to stew over the news; you have assignments due tomorrow.
Two hours pass. You’ve just finished proofreading your essay when there’s a knock on the door.
Dain and Xaden. You motion for them to come in, knowing that the two of them together outside your door will look deeply suspicious to any passerby.
“What the fuck do you two want?”
Xaden nods at Dain, motioning for him to talk.
“We discussed it, and we realized you’re right. We’re just going to have to deal with this, and there’s no use in us fighting about it.”
Xaden speaks next. “You’ve proven that you can handle yourself, but we both still want to protect you. We care for you deeply, and that’s not going to change. We’re declaring a truce.”
“Whose idea was that?” You ask, wary.
“His,” Dain answers. Interesting.
You look to Xaden. “And you’re fine with this,” you say, motioning between you and Dain, “that we’ll be able to speak directly to each other, that we can’t be apart for more than a few days, that we’re going to be stationed together for life?”
“Yes. I trust him not to hurt you, if only because his life is now tied to yours.”
That’s high praise coming from Riorson, who doesn’t fully trust anyone. You don’t dare ask why he feels this way.
“As you said,” Xaden continues, the tone of his voice making your heart flutter, “I hold no claim to you. You remain your own person, no matter how strongly I feel for you or how many nights we have spent together. The decision lies with you.”
“Dain?” You ask.
He’s been silent, watching you with a softness in his eyes. He’d never taken a good look at you before, never appreciated how beautiful you are. “If he’s okay with it, and you are, then I am too.”
You’d never felt compassion for Dain, never cared if he lived or died, but now you’re overwhelmed with a sense that you need to protect him — to guard that little red string until your last breath. “I care for both of you as well. You’re both good men, who are important to me, and I’d like to have you remain in my life, if you promise to play nicely.”
You extend a pinky to each of them.
Dain looks confused.
“She doesn’t fuck around with pinky promises. This might as well be a blood oath for her,” Xaden explains, interlocking your fingers — this isn’t new to him.
Dain reaches forward, the warmth of his skin against yours sending a wave of soothing energy through you.
“Are you going to make us pinky promise each other too?” He asks playfully, the first joke you’ve ever heard him crack.
Xaden is unamused. “Don’t push it, Aetos.”
You giggle at his barely-restrained contempt. This is gonna be fun.
———————————————
sfw
Most of the quadrant know that yours and Dain’s dragons are mated, and that messing with one of the four of you means invoking the wrath of the other three. For the first time since conscription day, you can walk the halls alone without fearing for your life.
Nobody is aware of Xaden’s role in the relationship, and he prefers to keep it that way — it keeps the target off your back, and this way nobody can say that he’s giving you special treatment or shame you for having two partners. Garrick is the only person who knows about all of this, and he’s sworn to secrecy (that had certainly been an interesting conversation to have).
Xaden may not declare his feelings for you publicly, but he and Sgaeyl are always watching your back, ready to jump in should Dain not be there or should things get out of his control.
The two act generally indifferent to each other, but their love of you is enough for them to behave when you’re around.
They find a good balance between treating you like a princess and pushing you to be the best you can be, letting you do your own work and prepare yourself for what’s to come after graduation.
nsfw:
The first time you felt Lann and Cath going at it was... interesting.
Xaden knew that this would happen eventually, having felt the same feeling before from Tairn and Sgaeyl. He had warned you days prior that the overwhelming need could lead you astray easily, but that he wouldn’t be mad if you and Dain acted on it.
And act you did. You became addicted to Dain’s touch as soon as you felt it, not wanting it to be a one-time thing, and that’s when the three of you decided that the boys would share you.
We all know Xaden is possessive. He used to call you “my girl” when it was just the two of you hooking up, but now you’re their girl.
“Aww, is our pretty girl needy?”
“I think our girl deserves a reward for being so good.”
Dain is shy at first, but he works up the confidence to start teasing you through the bond. He loves to watch you squirm from across the room as his voice speaks directly into your mind, telling you how hot you looked sparring, what he’s going to do to you tonight…
Xaden does something similar, his shadows brushing your arms and neck, sometimes even slipping under your clothes to touch your body when he can’t, giving soft caresses to your back and waist, but he’ll never take it too far — just enough to make you want his hands on you instead.
They’re competitive as hell. They’ll tag team you, taking turns to see who can make you cum harder/faster. Your personal record is six times in one night, three apiece before you nearly passed out. They declared a tie, putting aside their egos to care for their sweet girl who had taken it all so well for them.
Sometimes you get both of them at once, and it’s a little overwhelming but so so good. Making out with one while the other is on his knees for you, or one holding your hand and telling you how pretty you look while the other pounds you into the mattress…
The two of them together are the ultimate brat taming combo, with Dain’s strictness and Xaden’s strength. If you give them attitude, get too cozy with another rider, purposely put yourself in danger, or neglect to take care of yourself (overworking, skipping meals, not getting enough sleep…), you’ll have some consequences to face when you’re back behind closed doors that night.
Xaden will tie your hands behind your back with his shadows, Dain edging you until you cry and apologize, promising that you’ll never break their rules again (but you inevitably do, and then they have to teach you your lesson all over again, hehe)
Despite how rough they can be with you, they always take incredibly good care of you afterward, staying to clean you up and hold you close, reminding you how much they love you.
You’re always in the middle when cuddling afterward, as they refuse to touch each other more than absolutely necessary, but you don’t complain, just happy to be held and fall asleep safe between your two strong men 🥰
and now some angst, because that’s what I do:
When you and Dain came back from RSC, bloody and limp, Xaden took care of both of you, finally showing some love to Dain and taking pity on him, helping bandage his wounds and wash the dried blood from his skin.
Eventually Xaden starts distancing himself from the two of you, worried that Dain will read his memories either on purpose or by accident, and find out about his dealings with the gryphon fliers, which you have no idea about.
He plays it off as being busy with third year / wingleader stuff, and you and Dain don’t think anything of it; Xaden has always been withdrawn, never the type to share his thoughts unprompted, and he likes to spend time alone.
When Violet bonds with Tairn at threshing, you realize how Xaden had felt when he realized you and Dain were tied together, only you were less angry and more sad.
You knew this would happen, that Tairn would have to choose a rider eventually, but it still hurt you deeply. Dain held you all night, whispering sweet things to you while you cried and promising that he would never ever leave you.
You decide to rip the bandage off first, finding Xaden alone a few days later and telling him that for the sake of all four of you and your dragons, this should end here.
He agreed quietly, giving you one last kiss and holding you for a few minutes before finally letting go.
When Basgiath found out about the revolution, about everything going on beyond the wards, the two of you didn’t hesitate to follow Xaden to Aretia — he may no longer be yours, but you still love him and would gladly fight by his side until the end of your days. 💔

The Lost Sister - Part 18
Synopsis: Xaden is known as an only child due to his sister who 'died' during the Rebellion. Little do they know she didn't die and has been so close this entire time.
Garrick Tavis x OC A/N: I promise after this one we will get some chapters less dictated by the book. But here is the aftermath of the attack on Violet and Ophelia. There isn't much deviation, but I hope you guys enjoy it. Get prepared for some angry Ophelia in the next part.
The Lost Sister Masterlist | Masterlist
“I do not need a body guard.” Violet snapped at Xaden as he assigns Liam Mairi to our squad. Swapping him out with another first year cadet.
Violet and I had shared a glance as he told Dain. We both knew what he was doing. What him and Garrick were doing. He was assigning us a body guard. Liam was to watch over us and made sure nothing happened.
”We do not need a body guard. I can look out for both of us.” I tell him sternly.
He ignores both of us as he addresses Dain. “Liam is statistically one of the strongest first years in the quadrant.” His eyes briefly flicker to me. Good to know he hasn’t forgotten I pretty much stand equal with Liam minus my fight with Imogen. Though I had been declared the winner of that fight. “He was one of the fastest up the gauntlet, hasn’t lost a single challenge, and is bonded to an exceptionally strong Red Daggertail. Any squad would be lucky to have him, and he’s all yours, Aetos. You can thank me when you win the Squad Battle in the spring.”
Liam walks over and takes his place behind Violet and I.
”We. Do. Not. Need. A. Bodyguard.” Violet repeats a little louder as she hopes to gain Xaden’s attention.
I nudge her and I shake my head at her as she looks at me. She sighs knowing her attempts are useless and we are now stuck with a bodyguard. Though I wasn’t going to let Garrick go on this. He had been gone when I had woken up, and I now knew exactly what he had been doing.
Xaden pushes past Dain and stands in front of both of us. “But you do after last night. And I can’t be everywhere you two are. But Liam here-” he points to the blonde now behind us- “he’s a first year, so he can be in every class, at every challenge. So I hope you get use to him.”
Authority rolls off Xaden. With my signet I feel his presence and I reach out. His presence in my head is anything but calm. But I can feel his weakness for us. For not being able to protect us. But his strength… His strength right now is the fact he can shuffle his wing as he see’s fit. And he’s assigned us a first year he can trust.
“You’re over stepping.” Violet sneers at him. I admire the girl and her courage.
”You haven’t begun to see overstepping,” he warns as his voice drops and he leans towards Violet. “Any threat against you is a threat against me, and as we’ve already established, I have more important things to do than sleep on your floor.”
I hold back the laugh as Violet’s cheeks flush. “He is not sleeping in my room.”
“Of course not.” He smirks at her before looking between the two of us. “I had him moved. His room now between both of yours. Wouldn’t want to overstep.”
He turns on his heel and walks away, heading back to his place at the front of the formation. I glare after him. Overstepping my ass. He reminded me so much of our father it that moment it wasn’t funny.
“Fucking mated dragons.” Dain seethes. And for once I couldn’t agree with Dain more. Fucking. Mated. Dragons. And fucking over protective brothers and whatever Garrick and I were now. I would have to find them both later.
Normally our formation would finish after Fitzgibbons finished the announcements. But Panchek takes the podium, fumbling with the codex in his hands. He had only made a few appearances at morning formation, usually reserving it for something important. My eyes move to the front of our formation to see Xaden and Garrick talking. This is about last night. About the cadets that attacked Violet and I.
A hush settles over our squad as Panchek looks over the courtyard. “It has been brought to my attention as your commandant that a breach of the Codex has occurred. As you know, breaches of our most sacred laws are not to be tolerated. This matter will be addressed here and now. Will the accuser please step forward.”
My squad bickers around me, but I block it out as I shift my eyes back to where Xaden stands. Where Xaden starts to walk towards the dais and starts to climb the stairs. I feel Violets panic set in as she realises this is about us.
We turn and look at each other at the same time. “This is about us.” We whisper as Dain looks at the two of us.
I look to Xaden at the top of the Dais and can’t help but see our father. The way Xaden’s presence takes up the entire stage, capturing the entire quadrant is exactly like our father. If it wasn’t for what was about to happen, I would probably cry. Our father would be so proud to see Xaden handling himself as he had done.
“Early this morning, two riders in my wing were brutally and illegally attacked in their sleep with the intent of murdering both of them by a group of unbonded riders.”
The rotunda is filled with murmurs and gasps at his words. The other wings all starting at fourth wing. Everyone in my squad turns to look at Violet and I who both have our eyes focused on Xaden. The unbonded had all been killed by Xaden and I. Their deaths already announced. Someone had gotten away.
”As we all know, this is a violation of Article Three, Section Two of the Dragon Rider’s Codex and, in addition to being dishonourable, is a capital offense.”
Xaden stares at both of us now, every one following his gaze. Everyone in the quadrant is looking at us. They all know Violet and I were the targets of the murder attempt.
”Having been alerted by my dragon, I interrupted the attack along with two other Fourth Wing riders.”
I watch as Garrick and Bodhi both break formation and join Xaden up on the dais. One standing either side of Xaden. Garrick’s eyes immediately find mine.
”As it was a matter of life and death, I personally executed six of the would be murderers, as witnessed by Flame Section Leader Garrick Tavis and Tail Section Executive Officer Bodhi Durran. The three of us witnessed one of the victims Ophelia Riorson take out the last one.”
I hold my head high as everyone looks at me. I need to show a strong front. I need to show I am not to be messed with. I am glad Xaden leaves the part of my signet manifesting out.
”But the attack was orchestrated by a rider who fled before I arrived. A rider who had access to the map of where all first-years are assigned to sleep, and that rider must be bought to swift justice.”
Violet must have seen who it was. They must have been part of the attack on her room. I had only seen on rider in mine and had disposed of them swiftly. I feel Mealladh in my mind. She was close. She was not alone either. This was about to get ugly.
”I call you to answer for your crime against Cadet Sorrengail and Cadet Riorson.” Everyone hanging on Xaden’s words as he turns his focus to the centre of the formation. “Wingleader Amber Mavis.”
Chaos rips through the crowd. I barely hear it as I stare over at Amber. I barely had anything to do with her. The only time I really recall having anything to remotely do with her was when Violet had made it up the Gauntlet. She had questioned her methods causing Xaden and Garrick to defend Violet. But besides that I had only seen her around the quadrant. I’m knocked from my thoughts as Violet stumbles into me as she avoids Dain’s out stretched hands.
”Give me the memory.” He orders. Or tries to order from her.
Violet holds her head high as she stares him down. “Touch me without permission, and you’ll spend the rest of your life regretting it.”
I can’t help but feel proud of Violet. Since being here she had developed a back bone. Something I didn’t think possible. I never thought I would see her stand up to Dain like that. But why was she so scared of him touching her? Then I remember the signet on his uniform. A secret signet. Could he read memories? Xaden orders the other two wingleaders to join him on the Dais to make a decision. I feel Mealladh’s presence as she and six other dragons fly over the rotunda before landing on their perch. I look around and note all the wingleaders dragon’s as well as Tairn and Panchek’s green Clubtail. Dain turns to Violet and I with a pleading look. But the glare I send him startles him as he shifts his full focus to Violet. He knows there is no hope in convincing me to stop this. His only hope is Violet. I can tell she is torn on letting this happen or stopping it. I know she will want to find another way to punish Amber.
Amber glares and shouts at Xaden. “You’re using this to get your revenge on my family! For not supporting your father’s rebellion.”
Every marked ones eyes turn to amber. Anger and hatred in them. A low blow. Especially to Xaden who stands before her, and me who she had tried to kill. But Xaden keeps his mask up as he turns to the other wingleaders.
Tairn is going to show what happened to Violet. Do you want me to do the same? Mealladh asks. I will keep your signet safe.
My signet safe? I look up at her next to Tairn and I know she knows I’m confused but its a conversation we can have later. I nod at her. I watch as the dragons around us stiffen, their riders quick to follow. Everyone now knows what Amber did. What she co-ordinated. And now she would die for it.
Xaden steps forward, flanked by Nyra and Septon. ”The wingleaders have formed a quorum and are in unanimous agreement. We find you guilty Amber Mavis.”
“No!” Her scream echoing around the rotunda as she looks around for help. “It is no crime to rid the quadrant of the weakest rider and a threat!” She turns to Violet and I, pointing at me. “And everyone thought she was dead anyway! I did it to protect the integrity of the wings!”
Garrick steps forward next to the wingleaders at Amber’s comment about me. And he is furious. Even from here I can feel the intensity of his gaze, and know he will have that tick in his jaw. As if we all share a collective thought, everyone standing in the rotunda steps back. Preparing for what is to come.
”And as is our law, your sentence will be carried out by fire.” Nyra states. Amber’s face going pale.
”No! Claidh!” She turns to her dragon for help.
I feel her presence, an orange figure in my head. I reach out and feel her panic. Her last hope is her dragon. Her last strength. She’s calling out for her last hope. Hope that will never come. I retract from her mind, not wanting to feel what is to come. My heart breaks as Violet pleads to Xaden. But he doesn’t acknowledge it. If she lives, it shows others they can try the same thing. It puts her and I in danger. He can’t risk it. Cause if he does, it is his life on the line.
Tairn and Mealladh both lean forward over the dais towards Amber. In a split second their teeth part and a wave of excruciating heat washes over the rotunda. Amber is nothing but a pile of Ash on the ground as Claidh mourns. Part 19

Natlan Archon Quest 5.1 Thoughts and Theories
Compared to the last archon quest, this was a major step up for me in all aspects. There was a sense of grandness to it all, especially with the music and animation. Also, I'm so weak for Capitano you guys. His voice 😍🥵 alright I'll stop. But my Capitano agenda is far from over.
Spoilers below
Boy oh boy did I enjoy seeing everyone rally together to fight the Abyss. And the Abyss I felt was a pretty legitimate threat. (side note: i'm glad they didn't make us wait for the next patch to see the actual battle). The map was consumed by Abyssal power, reminding me of that one Enkanomiya event. And people died. You'd get to sites with people and everyone would be gone. It was lowkey chilling and Genshin really has stepped up in terms of how dark it wants the story to be. Chasca's sister, Chuychu, didn't make it. Their final words to each other were really heartfelt and it was sad to watch them say goodbye.
On a much lighter note, the cutscenes of Mavuika and the six heroes using their powers was soooo freaking cool, especially with the music. Side note, I'm glad they didn't shove the Traveler in as the final hero since this wasn't their fight technically. I loved seeing Mavuika use all her abilities and create that giant starburst thing in the sky to fight the Abyss. It gave me major Endgame vibes ngl. I was having a blast. This quest also made me really love Mavuika. She cares so deeply about her people and home that she'd sacrifice herself to save it all. It's a heavy price, but she's willing to pay it. Aside from Mavuika's selfless nature, she also looked epic when she fought the Abyss in the sky.
The new characters in general I really enjoyed, especially Ororon. I do like his design and I love how his voice tone changes from serious to almost childish when talking to Citlali. And his lore is really fascinating since he has an incomplete soul. Citlali gives me major Faruzan energy, but she has a beautiful design and she's pretty relatable imo with her awkwardness. I liked her a lot. Xilonen had a lot of charisma imo. Although I haven't figured out how to use her on the field during her playable segments.
And Capitano. My gosh did this man become very interesting. Not only is he Khaenri'ahn, but apparently his face is rotting from living for so long AND he knows Dain. He's a lot more tragic than I initially expected, having lost everything and everyone to the cataclysm. And out of all the Harbingers, alongside Childe (maybe Arlecchino with the HoH), he's definitely one of the more altruistic ones. His methods were extreme, but at the end of the day, he wanted to save Natlan, having lost so much already. Capitano was willing to put aside his own pride with his plan and listen to Mavuika's, helping her and the others defend their home. He even gave her all his soldiers to have for reinforcements. He's not driven by evil the way Dottore is or is vengeful to a destructive degree like Scaramouche. He's honorable and driven by the pain of his past. Vengeance too probably, but he didn't wipe Natlan clean to save it.
The lore was also fascinating. To talk to the Lord of the Night was really cool and I loved getting to know more about Teyvat as a whole. Btw, the "sky is fake" claim is finally proven true.
Overall, I was very satisfied with this Archon quest and could honestly watch a whole show on Natlan trying to fend off the Abyss. It reminds me of the Long Night but significantly better executed on almost all fronts (music still slapped).
Going forward, I definitely think we will see Mavuika die but either it won't be in the typical way or she will return in another form like Furina. Given how she's playable, Hoyo will find the loophole. But yeah, Mavuika will have to pay a heavy price. And it appears Capitano will as well. He still has his "final foe" to face and Ronova apparently sent him on his journey. Of course, the price for messing with death your own life, which Mavuika will have to pay. It seems like whatever Capitano is asking of the Lord of Night also will either lead to his own demise or some sort of demise. Either way, both characters are going to be facing a heavy price. I'm really excited to see the final face off with the Abyss and what will become of both Capitano and Mavuika.
The sky being fake caught my eye specifically because the edges of the hole and the void are reminiscent of the power used by the unknown god in the beginning of the game. Could the unknown god reside out in that void? Did she have a hand in creating Teyvat? Is Teyvat even a "real" world or is it something else entirely? So many questions. I look forward to getting answers and I love the small detail of the hole being covered by smoke. it would cause mass hysteria if one moment, you were fighting for your very home and then another bombshell about the sky being fake is thrown at you.
My only major nitpick is that the Natlan archon quest is almost beat for beat Fontaine's with some exceptions of course.
You got:
big existential, life threatening event that has been steadily building up for years and years
a Fatui harbinger who offers aid because they got their own stakes in this (said Harbinger is also Khaenri'ahn)
the archon has to die because they used powers that are kinda taboo
there are minor incidents prior to the actual existential event
said event has been known about by the archon for hundreds of years and preparations have been made
the day is saved by the archon (or dragon) flying up into the sky and using their awesome power to save everyone
supporting characters die protecting others (Silver and Melus you were the real ones)
The archon quest is still fantastic, but the overall formula was very similar. (it was also weird to not hear Kinich or Kachina but I get the reason).
Anyways, what did you guys think and are you excited for the next chapter???

Another successful compliance! As they didn't receive as much fighting as he had forseen but he was certain that would please Sorsollia. The smile on his face disappears seeing another scribe there waiting for him... you were the main scribe they were to collect when he had to do these frivolous talks of what he had done.
The other scribe bows their head and he feels a sense of anger... perhaps disgust that someone else is here... but he swallows the feeling and gets the talk over with. As they are packing up their tablet he stops them. "Where is Sorsollia?"
There is an upturn in their heartbeat, "She hasn't been feeling well. I don't know what she is sick with all I know is that she's off rotation for some time." LIAR his mind hisses but he knows his Sorsollia will be displeased if the only other Scribe that he has 'dained to be in his presence is dismissed.
"Thank you." He dismisses them as he sits and broods. His Sorsollia is alive... he would have been told otherwise. So he simply waits for a few hours... and waits... and waits... and waits. Sorsollia does not come... she does not message... there is silence... and Solruthis Usdasha does not like this.
He moves with the flickering lights... they turn off long enough for him to move to the next hall... to cram himself into the next crevice. Humans are surprisingly unaware creatures though many are Nostroman he passes... he frowns as he heads into the part of the ship that is inhabited by those who do not like it being so dark. Here the prey tends to act skittish... as he watches how one person turns on their heels when they see the hallway lights flicker hiding his movements. The soft nope from their lips would normally make him smile but he is on a mission.
He could easily also push himself into the service halls and move around that way but no... this is his ship and he can slink about how ever he pleases. He comes to her door pushing his thumb over the reader and overriding her locks... after all it is his ship he is the skeleton key.
He moved with unnatural quietness into her abode; spacious given her rank it had two rooms compared to the typical singular room. His ears moved as he heard her pained hiss.
Sorsollia winced as she dabbed the cotton ball against the cut on her forehead her non dominant arm in a sling as her broken wrist was splinted. Most of the swelling on her face had gone down just leaving the ugly bruising. She sniffled hard feeling herself want to tear up and cry again, her eyes went up freezing as there was someone- "Sol?" Her voice cracked as she turned around.
The fearful beating of her heart died as he knew that rushing hopeful beat. His mind was terrifyingly silent as he took a step closer... as he gently grabbed her face and turned her toward him... it was so quiet when he looked over her face... someone had beaten his Sorsollia. Someone had harmed his Sorsollia while he was away. His eyes look at her broken wrist and splinted fingers too he knew a threat he knew what a threat to someone's livelyhood looked like. His thumb absentmindedly wiping away the tears rolling down her cheeks as her legs give way and she lets out a dispared wail. A wail that normally excites him... and oh how it still excited him in a different way. He pulls her out of the small room of the bathroom and holds her close. "Oh my Sorsollia what happened? Did the head scribe order this?" His voice suddenly went cold at the thought of someone abusing her because they were on a power trip.
"No! No... no... no... I don't-"
"Don't lie to me. Sorsollia you know I don't like lying. Don't protect the scum." He snarls holding her tightly, "They must be punished... I am a Primarch no one-"
"I don't know who they were." She sobs into his chest afraid of the repercussions but her Sol was there. "They came to me when you were gone. They didn't tell me who they worked for but to only edit a few documents to make their lord look better. I assume they were thugs for some noble. Because one of them had to have been one... because I talked back to him I was too comfortable in my position working for you because they didn't like a scribe talking back to them." Her voice strained at the end as the tears ran harder. "They knew which hand was my dominant one... so they broke my wrist of the other one to send a message." She was so very ugly when she cried... utterly distressed and distraught.
"And you still told them no?" He probes.
"They told me that they would be back and to use this time to consider it." She hiccups softly.
"When they come back I want you to agree." He says holding her. "I'll make sure I find out who they are and who their employer is." He whispers to her as she sobs into his shirt. Solruthis Uadasha finally truly comes out... there has been a great injustice inflicted upon his charge... upon his Sorsollia. And he will make them pay.
She was withdrawn... hardly holding the name Sorsollia but he played his role just as she did. They stayed apart as he played the distant ruler and not the attentive lover and she hardly needed goading into her role of the cowed submissive. He held her the night he came back... as she was tired and sleep wasn't coming to her... she was afraid and clung to him but for now she was by herself.
Konrad leaned back on his throne as the chirping of the small cogitatior he planted in her room. His impassive face split into an insane grin as he watches how the three... no four, his eyes spy the man at the door, "faceless" mooks walk with such false swagger. His nails dig into his seat as her arm is grabbed and Sorsollia collapses to her knees trying to get her wounded arm free. Konrad had sat and tended to her wounds to soothe her as she had been living in such sweet fear for days.
His dark eyes narrow at the hand touching his Sorsollia far too affectionately. Konrad gritted his teeth in that manic grin feeling the teeth chipping before healing. But once they were gone he quickly collected his Sorsollia taking the document they wanted her to improve and the name of the noble that had the AUDACITY to threaten what was H̷̨̭́̿Ḭ̴̏̕S̷̢͇̐. He hid her away in his room as Solrithis Uadasha got to work.
The lookout lay dead and blind... his tongue shredded to ribbons as they went down without saying anything. His torture felt much like an afterthought much just like their role in all of this. The two guards who had beaten and broken his Sorsollia's wrist he was careful in the application of pressure and pulling away... breaking more and more of their bones and perhaps like a Drukhari he twisted their useless limbs into unnatural shapes as the two bleated for death and each day he brought them closer and closer with more and more bones breaking and each day they did not expire he continued to crush and twist.
The lower noble who felt so big to be perhaps within the fucked up standards of society be able to get away with beating the personal scribe of a Primarch. Perhaps he had the right.... perhaps he did... but unfortunately for him he picked the wrong Primarch to try and get away with this crime. He had cut off the hand that he had dared touch what was his and was slowly peeling it bit by bit and feeding the flesh back to him.
Sorsollia was far too kind for her own good... he'd have to see what the laws from where she was were like... He pushed the flesh into the mans mouth grinning. "You know she said that the sins of the father don't pass on." He laughed, it was a hideous laugh one of disbelief that he held affection for someone so blind to the cruelty of the universe. And yet he hesitated to rip the veil from her eyes because once he did that... he was certain she would see the disgusting creature that he was. He craved her affection... he craved her attention... he craved her seeing him as a man. She couldn't be blind to everything... she was a legion scribe... she knew the methods.
There was a nasty thought planted in his mind now... the paranoia and mistrust rearing its ugly head... he left the torture room unable to find satisfaction in conducting the punishments until he figured out why. "Sorsollia." He said entering the room wiping the blood from his hands as she paused what she was listening too looking over at him from the lit corner of his room.
"Yes?"
"I need to know something." He walked over.
"Of course I live to serve." She said with a genuine smile but that only heightened his paranoia.
"Why did you want to work for my legion? We are perhaps the most cruel ones... and you had personally applied."
"I had personally applied for both your legion and the blood angels." Her lips became a thin line as she thought of words, "While I don't agree with the methods you employ... your rate of compliance compared to the body count is a good ratio. Um..."
"Speak."
"I just don't agree with it... but it leans more into the necessary evil. Not that you are evil Sol." Sorsollia quickly adds, "Just all of this... the great crusade... perhaps there is a selfishness in my part for hoping that I'm on the correct side of history... instead of simply being a conscientious objector... that maybe this will all be worth it in the end. But what do I know of war and combat... I'm just a helpless Scribe." She says looking at her wrist, "I chose you for the low ratio of bodies to compliance."
"And Sanguninius?" He says not betraying the way his hearts were twisting at the thought of his Sorsollia being in the Great Angel's company... being his Scribe. Konrad wants to claw his scalp at the anxiety that bubbles over at the thought of her being enamored with the perfect angel.
"I've heard he is kind. He gives many chances to accept the imperium's generous offer... but I've heard that the Blood Angels can be... scary. " She nervously laughs, "Me talking about how scared I am of the Blood Angels when I work for the Night Lords. I probably sound stupid..." He's noticed since she's been attacked how critical of herself she has been.
He pulls her into his arms his long fingers combing through her hair, "Sorsollia." He listens for her hum, "In a couple of days this will all be over. I want you to return to being yourself."
The pitying smile she gave him nearly had him snarling, "You're very bad at comforting but I appreciate the attempt. Just..." Her voice sounded so small, "Please promise me this won't happen again? Just... I thought I was safe and-" Her voice breaks as tears flow.
Giving her his child would let everyone know who she was... it would make sure no one would touch her... He kisses away her tears, "Shhh Sorsollia I swear upon one of my hearts that it won't happen again."
That gets her to smile, "If I'm keeping track that means you've sworn on both of your hearts so far."
"So it is. I've already taken care of the thugs that hurt you. They've been punished."
She just nods and hides her face in his chest, "I should probably go back to my room."
"One more day Sorsollia. You slept so fitfully last sleeping cycle... it would make me worry to find out you've been struggling to sleep. And I need to make sure you are comfortable so your wrist and fingers heal."
"Okay Sol. One more night." She sighs happily just feeling that she'll soon be able to put this all behind her. For Konrad he was thinking of what he was going to do to the noble who was so eager to get the Primarch's gaze... oh the dark grin on his face as he certainly had it now. He gave his Sorsollia a kiss on the forehead and swore that the sparkle to her eyes was slowly returning and that made his hearts sing.

Spoiler warning for the new Xbox glider description
Lokey feel bad for Dain and Vedrfolnir after reading the new glider description. Spoiler
Like Vedr was just doing his job and they blinded him and threw him in prison for it. Like what did bro see that warranted that response for him. I think it could be something to do with the vinster king inevitability destroying his nation and it probably was classed as an act of treason or something.
And imagine Dain’s pov of that, Dain served the king and the royal family and they (im assuming the king sentenced Vedr) did that to his older brother. Bro probably lost all faith in his king at that point.
I’m sorry for mocking your cataclysm trauma Dain and for you relationship with your brother and giving very hypocritical advice to the traveler knowing your own relationship with your sibling
Okay okay more on to my speculations regarding this information, other than the points I already included
1.) I think Dain and Vedr had a very close relationship before everything happened considering he was apart of the group that were supposed to save the nation, and he was still helping (somehow, I don’t have any ideas yet as to how they communicated while Vedr was in prison, my only guess is Dain abusing his power as Twilight Sword and using that to talk to him). This idea comes from the fact Dain seemed very reluctant to mention the sinners considering it was 3.8 or something that he first mentioned them or anything really about his family. As well as the line “The young knight, initially intending only to save his older brother” (adorable, kicking my feet reading that line) and the line mentioned about Dain’s family implies that his family was significant to him at some point (brotherless behaviour, it’s giving Diluc and Kaeya kinda -ex person waiting for genshin to let diluc and Kaeya make up, well not ex still am just moved on to Dain and Vedr’s relationship -it’s got more tea to it okay-, if you ship them dni right now either of the sets of BROTHERS for that matter)
2.) Dain probably knew the sinners before he gathered them to eliminate the threat to their homeland considering the line “the young knight gathered the brilliant young ones of the age”. Which implies he at least knew who they were, maybe they were all of equal footing at the time
3.) how old were the ‘brilliant young ones of the age’ cause that could imply early 20’s potentially late teens, or young in the sense that they are younger than majority in their respective fields in the royal court (I’m still rolling with the whole royal court job agenda) cause like maybe for example with Rhinedottir she might have been in her mid late 20’s around 27 ish working in the court as an alchemist while her colleagues (I’m assuming she had colleagues) may have been a lot older than her and more experience under their belts than her.
But then again they were all called the ‘best in the fields’ or something along those lines by Dain so maybe they were really young and just very talented like Rhine could maybe out do alchemists that had been working for 40 years or something and only be like 19-25.
4.) (I think I’m up to 4, this is getting long might have to split it into two posts) the question now being posed to me is how big is the age gap between Dain and Vedr, I’m thinking if we go for the whole late teen early 20’s thing maybe he was 23 and Dain was ~20 ish. but then vedr seems to young considering what he did cause like Mona travels and learnt from Barbeloth for X many years and appears to be in her early mid 20’s (I need ghost to play twenties when I see them, sorry getting side tracked) and she’s not a visionary, like she’s a good astrologist but not at visionary level. So maybe Vedr was in his late 20’s at the time and Dain (mid twenties) and gang were mid to late twenties (Rhine is the youngest and Dain the most immature, I don’t remember who said that originally, credit to them for the idea but it’s cannon now). Cause like I can’t see Dain and Vedrfolnir being more than 4 years apart considering how close I think they were
Anyways end rant -for now- bye bye to anyone who is still here till the end, I got a bit distracted (a bit is an understatement)

Canon Viojack Moments
This ship. Let's talk about it. Warning for Series Spoilers:
I know most (if not all) of the fouth wing fandom refers to Jack Barlowe as JFB. And honestly? for good reason. The man has the personality of a wet paper bag and the plot armor of an old nokia phone. But I digress. It wasn't until my third or fourth reread that I realized that the main pairing (X/V) didn't hit the same strong enemies-to-lovers notes for me the way Viojack did-- especially in light of the fact that Xaden had never had the intention of hurting Violet because of his deal with her mother.
So let's dive into the canon moments for a rarepair that will never be! Please keep in mind that this is, in fact, all meant in good fandom fun. I still love Xaden, I just tend to love unhinged psychopathic characters a little more.
As I was rereading this for the fourth time, I noticed the subtle power play/primal play going on in this scene with Jack putting emphasis on pleasure and screaming. I also love how Violet's response sets the tone for their dynamic: Jack making threats and Violet refusing to back down.
His hand on her hip as he hovers above her while Violet presses a dagger to his balls... whats not to love?? I also find it interesting that Violet fixates on his eye color here, which is something that she seems to only do for the other main love interests (see: Xaden's onyx eyes, Dain's warm brown, even arguably Liam's blue eyes)
Omegaverse AU where... lol no but on a serious note I find it hilarious that Jack smells her before stalking away especially considering the fact that Violet canonically (from Xadens Bonus Chap POV) smells like citrus- the one thing Jack is allergic to. The irony is *chefs kiss*
I love how most readers will finish fourth wing with the impression that Violets fear towards Jack was completely one-sided (I know I did) because he's a Big Strong Murderous Man™ when *canonically* she repeatedly scares the shit out of him too.
This little morsel during threshing just buttered my biscuits because I love how she compares Jack to Xaden- aka the MMC and LOVE INTEREST- and Jack somehow unintentionally comes out on top?? this is a stretch but stick with me...
Also, I found it interesting during my reread that Jack wasn't the one who planned Andarna's murder. Tynan was the "genius" behind that plot, and also the one who bullied Oren when he voiced his second thoughts. Jack only followed along with the plot to an extent (he arguably ran at the earliest convenience) And I feel like readers put the weight of Tynan's plan on Jacks shoulders solely because we remember Jack as the asshole who participated (and survived). also see: Jack was never involved in the assassination attempt or any of the other dozens of times he could've killed her without repercussions.
ngl really loved that Violet's last thought as she was making her peace with death is Jack-centric.
Again, Jack is seen as the primary instigator but throughout FW Violet is the one that meets him where he's at. She's unwilling to back down and I love that about their dynamic because - in this scene- you can see her begin to gain the upper hand.
Another canon moment that I completely missed when I first read FW. But again, Violets actions/accomplishments instill a sense of fear in Jack. Also I just love that by this point she's able to read him so well.
Did everyone miss the fact that he blew her a kiss or was it just me??? because in light of the IF turret scene (you know where he saves her life) this had me feeling absolutely feral. Like of all the ways he could have instigated a reaction out of her it was blowing kisses that did the trick?! and I love love LOVE how she continues to be vocal about his cowardice when the rest of the quadrant doesn't.
Exhibit four of prime sarcastic banter from enemies that could become lovers (leave me to my delusions).
Out of context this is the most insane and more than a little erotic moment between the two of them??? like they're dick to butt here, and he's whispering? (where have i heard this before- oh right: that time Xaden kicked her ass on the mat. The only difference is one of them had dangerous intent which makes my E2L heart swoon)
Canon that, not only is Jack the first person Violet's killed, he's also the only person Violet's felt *guilty* of killing.
Listen, I get that this scene has more to do with her sense of self and loss of morality but I think it's interesting that she's grieving this after saving one of her best friends by sacrificing the main antagonist and primary pain in her ass. Read between the lines on that one lol
IF JFB's return lets break it down:
she's focusing on his appearance.
She points out that her signet manifested as she killed him. Now this is pivotal because during rereads we've uncovered that there's an easter egg during her *passionate* first kiss with Xaden. Keep that in mind. So we fast forward to War Games where she has another *passionate* moment- feeling protective of her best friend and fury towards her main antagonist. And that's exactly the moment where her signet truly manifests. Xaden may have been the first spark but Jack is her catalyst in both character development and achieving power. I also just love the irony that him pushing her towards destruction is what ultimately destroys him.
And again the way she fixates on his eyes. I love that in a room full of people applauding his return the first person he looks for is her. (it gives me the best chills every time)
AND FINALLY THE MOMENT THAT HAD ME SHIPPING THEM:
I love this on so many levels. I love how witty and sarcastic he is. How sincere. This is the scene that made me realize (amidst the X/V "tell me the truth" debacle in IF) that Jack has always been weirdly open with Violet. He wears his intentions on his sleeve. She never second guesses his motives until *this moment* because she's already in the middle of second guessing everything the other love interests (Dain and Xaden) have done towards her. While this scene felt out of character in comparison to the rest of the series, I personally choose to believe that he's being genuine and open with her. Because the last thing she's anticipating is the truth and it catches her- and us as the readers- completely off guard
Also I know general fandom consensus is that he did this to protect his double-agent venin status. However, as i've said before I'm a die hard believer that Nolon succeeded at mending Jacks soul for a short time but ultimately it's Jacks' greed for power that continues to push him towards veninism.

In honor of there being exactly ONE MONTH until Onyx Storm, here are
Questions that keep me up at Night: The Empyrean Edition
Fourth Wing and Iron Flame spoilers ahead
Why does NO ONE make a bigger deal about Tairn bonding to the sister of the man his only other rider (supposedly) died to save?
Is Tairn the only Morningstar tail? [this one I might be able to answer as I start my reread]
Why do the dragons keep their names a secret? Is RY going to keep it consistent with other dragon lore and have it connected to their power somehow, or something else entirely? Perhaps tied more to the bond between dragon and rider itself? And maybe…breaking that bond?
Way back in Chapter 8 of FW, Kaori says if not for Tairn, they would have lost during the rebellion. WHY? I need more information about just WTH went on during the Battle; since Brennan clearly didn’t die, why does Xaden’s dad get credit for killing him with an arrow? Part of the cover up but still why?? and last but not least
5. Is Violet and Xaden’s connection/bond typical for riders of mated dragons????
When Xaden first talks in her head at Monserrat, she asks Tairn “Is this normal with all mated pairs and their riders?” and he replies “For some. It’s a great advantage in a battle.” Why only some? Is this common knowledge? No one really seems to KNOW they can communicate like that, except eventually Second Squad begins to figure it out because they are around Violet and Xaden often enough and the two of them are NOT super subtle. But it doesn’t seem like anyone KNOWS. Even in IF, I think Varrish only suspects the depth of their connection. During the RSC training when he brings Dain in, he talks about testing a theory and Violet tells Xaden not to come because she thinks he’s testing the bond blocking mixture, but I think he’s more seeing if they can communicate, because general emotions would be fitting for RSC, but him coming to rescue her from Dain would show that Xaden knew the nature of the threat she faced. I think we buy Violet’s assumption because she’s our narrator but we forget she’s not always RIGHT, that’s part of the point, she biases our thinking with her interpretations. ALSO, Tairn talks about it being an advantage in battle but have any supervising officers or anyone actually in power suggested they use their ability to communicate like that to their advantage? Xaden and Vi take it into account obviously, but do any of the experienced leaders? Do any of them even mention it? WHY ARE THEY NOT? Is it the typical riders of mated dragons connection, or is it more because of their personal connection to each other and/or the nature of their signets even possibly impacting it? Especially depending on what her second signet ends up being.
Obviously that last question keeps me up the most.
Not really a question, but damn how cool would it be if they actually explored the extent of that connection and how they could use it? Like at the end of everyone’s favorite “My house. My chair. My woman” scene, when Xaden pulls away after like Projecting? his thoughts into her and she’s like “What was THAT??” and he comments he shouldn’t have done that. But what’d he do exactly?
My soul wants them to figure out the exact limits of their connection (distance they can talk and sense each other for example) but also I want them to be able to use that connection and wield each other’s signets. Them figuring it out by accident but then able to use it to their advantage. Violet hiding in shadows even when Xaden is out on patrol to eavesdrop on leadership. The leaders swearing Xaden not to tell Violet information, but she’s watching the whole meeting in his head, through his eyes…so he never technically told her anything. IF Vi is something like a truth sayer, Xaden could use it too but people aren’t on their guard about how they are saying things when they are around him compared to when Violet is around.
Probably not going to happen, but I want it so much!!!
Who else is losing sleep for the next month???

Reblogs are greatly appreciated !!
「 FEAT : 」 Dainsleif x GN! reader
「 ### : 」 fluff ♡
「 CWS : 」 ambiguous relationship/fwb-to-lovers, soft Dainsleif, potentially ooc Dain, fluff.
Reposted from my secondary blog !!
You greet him with a crooked smile, splayed out on your back in the grass, so at ease even when the black-swathed figure stands above you, standing like a sore thumb amongst the crisp grass and gold sunlight.
“I wondered where you had gone,” Dainsleif says, an unsung question in his voice. He cocks his head, letting his eyes roam over you— a habit, at this point. The tree you’ve chosen to rest under casts shifting shadows on your face, a dappling of light peaking through the leaves. Your eyes are hazy, still freshly awoken by the sound of his footsteps, but the curve of your lips is always endearing to him, a secret he’s played close to his chest.
“Were you worried?” You ask. The amusement drips from your voice like syrup, your smile shifting into something more awake. With a lazy hand, you wave in the direction of your home, some ways away, half-hidden in the trees and almost hidden by the vines and flora.
It looks smaller than it is from over here, Dainsleif thinks. Cozy and quaint and oh-so-unassuming. Your home. His sanctuary. (You always snorted when he says something dramatic like that. “It’s your home too, Dain,” you’d correct him so easily. He never could come up with a response. He’s not sure what the appropriate response could even be. )
“It’s not that far,” you reason, and before he can say something else, perhaps about the ever-looming threat of the abyss order, you pat the spot beside you, inviting him to sit in the warm mid-morning air with an easy, “C’mere.”
Dainsleif takes the invitation, of course— as if he’d ever entertain the thought of saying otherwise.
The trunk of the tree is solid against his back when he leans, legs stretching out beside your head, where you jokingly scowl at him for not truly laying with you on the grass (your words, not his.)
It is a feeling that settles over him easily the longer he lays in the space with you: Peace. Stillness. Longing.
His eyes flick to you at that last one, watching as you breathe in the crisp air of the forest, and the way there’s some bits and piece of grass stuck in your hair. Absently, one of his hands comes to tangle in it, moving in slow motions as he cards through it soothingly. Only to remove the blade of grass, of course.
As you continue to half-doze in the mid-morning sun, he wonders how much longer you’ll allow yourself to play this song and dance with him. How much longer he’ll let himself dance around the truth, too scared of both his past and his future to face the present.
Dainsleif watches you, peaceful, at ease, in the presence of a man so cursed as him, and wonders if he is worthy for anything more than this. Wonders what it is you see in him to have come this far, to have been so patient already. To have let the thing between you two go undressed for so long.
His hand drifts to your face, habitual in how gentle his touch is. Why, he wonders, have you let him fall for you so?
One of your hands comes up to meet his, guiding his hand so his knuckles meet your lips in a soft kiss. “You’re thinking so loudly,” you complain with a huff, and all Dainsleif can do is chuckle.
“Is that so?” He asks, twining your fingers together and letting them rest on your shoulder. “My apologies, I wasn’t aware you could read minds.”
He feels rather than sees you roll your eyes, and you sit up, still keeping your hands connected. There’s a scolding expression on your face, but he’s been around you long enough already to see how you fight back a grin. “First you disturb my rest —twice!— and now you mock me. Honestly, Dain, how rude.” But before he can defend himself, you’re already soldiering on, and the air around you changes. To something a bit more serious, a bit more concerned. When your gaze meets his, he’s silenced by the cocktail of sympathy and understanding in it. Underneath the quips and the jokes born from familiarity, there is something genuine. “Well? No use beating around the bush. What’s wrong?”
“I…” Dainsleif pauses, his mind going blank when he tries of think of how to put it. You’ve caught him off-guard. He struggles to find words for a moment too long, his tongue suddenly drying in his mouth. There’s too much to say, really. Too much that could go wrong, too much that could go right. He doesn’t even know where to start.
He squeezes your hand slightly, his insides twisting in a way he can only describe as nervous. How preposterous. Him, the bough keeper, hesitating because he doesn’t know what to do with his feelings. And yet there’s no other way to see the situation.
“Dain,” You cut into the fog in his brain with a low chuckle, thumb rising to smooth out the furrow in his brow. You smile at him, and he can practically feel his shoulders sag. “Relax. Just say whatever’s on your mind.”
You watch and wait for a few more seconds as Dain almost internally argues with himself. The back-and-forth between his heart and his mind is clear as day to you, watching as he frustrates over whatever it is that conflicts him. You have to fight back a smile. Whatever’s got Dain this torn, it’s sure to be something. He squeezes your hand absently —almost instinctively— and you squeeze back every time.
After some time, the silence breaks as Dainsleif releases a long, deep breath. His hand tightens around yours, as if scared you might pull away. But for all the nervous ticks and tells you’ve learned to spot from him over time, his voice is resolute when he speaks. Unwavering in the truth that he’s finally come to accept aloud.
“I’m in love with you,” he says, gaze meeting yours. “But I’m scared that admitting it will ruin what we have now.”
The silence stretches out for what feels like an eon after that, and Dainsleif can almost feel his throat constrict in nervousness, fearing that the very thing he dreaded was coming to pass. You say nothing, merely watching him and breathing. For as much as Dainsleif fears that these next few moments with you so close to him will be his last, he keeps his head raised and not backing down from your stare. Your eyes don’t stray from his, peering deeply, searching for… something that you hope to find in him.
Dainsleif can almost feel his cool exterior crack underneath your heavy examination. Can almost feel the way his heart wants to break free from his chest, or the way his blood battles with being boiling hot or freezing cold. So nervous, with a heart beating so fast. Never had he thought that he’d feel the rush of adrenalin and bravery that comes with confessing your love to a person in his long, long life.
So gently that he doesn’t feel it at first, your hands come to cup his face, gently prying out of the hold with his own.
“Do you mean that, Dain?” You ask, a smile taking root. It both settles his nerves and sends his heart racing. You’re so close— he can feel your breath on his lips, and warmth rushes to his face unbidden.
“All other truths I’ve spoken pale in comparison,” he says, eyes flicking down to your lips. So close. He had tasted them before, yes, but that was before his heart had been laid out on the table for you to pick and prod at. Now, he wonders, will your kiss be even better?
The answer, Dainsleif finds, is a definite yes.
When you lean in to kiss him, it is something soft. More tame than some of your other kisses by far, but the difference is that this has sparks racing up his spine, and heat blooming where your hands touch his face. He hums into the kiss, a sound that comes instinctively after waiting so long to finally kiss you like this— to kiss you as the man who loves you with every fiber of his being. Your lips are warm against his, making his heart stutter and dazing his brain with just a touch.
“So dramatic,” you say when you two part, only just a bit breathless. There’s a curve to your lips that you can’t tamp down, and Dainsleif is certain that he has a matching smile of his own. You laugh, taking your hands from him and wrapping them around his shoulders instead, burying your face in his neck. “Man, I’ve been waiting for you to say that forever, you know?”
Dainsleif coughs, an embarrassed flush rising to his face. “My apologies for dragging it out so long, then.”
He feels the huff of your laugh against his skin. Feels the soft, tender kiss you gift him with. “You can make it up to me.”
One of his hands come up to the middle of your back, holding you closer to him as he leans back. Even through his gloves, his touch is warm. Without the indecision to haunt him, his shoulders relax without the weight of a burden. There is peace here, with you, under the tree with the fallen leaves and the grass and the dandelions. Where he can hold your form against him, and bask in your presence like how a cat basks in the afternoon sun. Dainsleif smiles, pressing a kiss to your hair with such tenderness that your heart nearly melts.
“For as long as I live,” he promises, holding you close.

Madness - Chapter 4
Warning: It's a war college so don't read it if you sensitive to violence death etc.
Note: We have finally a "decent" conversation between Xaden and Aelin. And guess what? We have a new nickname. From Xaden. Soo goood. 😍
Enjoy :)
The sparring ring is where riders are made or broken. After all, no respectable dragon would choose a rider who cannot defend themselves, and no respectable cadet would allow such threat to the wing to continue training.
-Major Afendra’s guide to the Riders Quadrant
(Unauthorized Edition)
“Elena Sosa, Brayden Blackburn.” Captain Fitzgibbons reads from the death roll, flanked by two other scribes on the dais as we stand in silent formation in the courtyard, squinting into the early sun.
This morning, we’re all in rider black, and there’s a single silver four-pointed star on my collarbone, the mark of a first-year, and a Fourth Wing patch on my shoulder. We were issued standard uniforms yesterday, summer-weight tightfitted tunics, pants, and accessories after Parapet was over, but not flight leathers. There’s no point handing out the thicker, more protective combat uniforms when half of us won’t be around come Threshing in October. The armored corset Mira made us isn’t regulation, but I fit right in among the hundreds of modified uniforms around me.
After the last twenty-four hours and one night in the first-floor barracks, I’m starting to realize that this quadrant is a strange mix of we-might-die-tomorrow hedonism and a brutal efficency in the name of the same reason.
“Jace Sutherland.” Captain Fitzgibbons continues to read, and the scribes next to him shift their weight. “Dougal Luperco.”
I think we’re somewhere in the fifties, but I lost count. This is the only memorial the names will get, the only time they’ll be spoken of in the citadel.
There are a hundred and fifty-six of us in the first floor of the dormitory building, our beds positioned in four neat rows in the open space. Private rooms are like flight leathers - you don’t get one until you survive Threshing.
“Simone Casteneda.” Captain Fitzgibbons closes the scroll. “We commend their souls to Malek.” The god of death.
I blink. Guess we were closer to the end than I thought.
There’s no formal conclusion to the formation, no last moment of silence. The names on the scroll leave the dais with the scribes, and the quiet is broken as the squad leaders all turn and begin to address their squads.
“Hopefully you all ate breakfast, because you’re not going to get another chance before lunch,” our squad leader says. His name is Theo as we learnt after yesterday’s events. For first impression he seem to be a pretty calm guy. He talked about the rules but not like Dain based on what Violet said last night. I swear the rules are his gods.
In our squad there are third- and second-years besides us, marked and non-marked ones. We’re a really mixed group.
Yesterday I didn’t have a chance to observe our squad mates because when Theo’s briefing was over I went to find Violet. We succeeded securing beds next to each other. Rhiannon too. We talked about a lot of things due to the fact that we’re not in the same squad. I can’t be with her for every lesson, our schedule is different. Vi helped me memorising the order of my lessons. It’s a luck that at least I have good memory.
“Second- and third-years, I’m assuming you know where to go” Theo continues as the scribes wind their way around the edge of the courtyard to my right, headed back to their quadrant.
There’s a mutter of agreement from the senior cadets ahead of us. As first-years, we’re in the back two rows of the little square that makes up our squad.
“First-years, at least one of you should have memorized your academic schedule when it was handed out yesterday.” Theo’s voice booms over us. “Stick together. I expect you all to be alive when we meet this afternoon in the sparring gym.”
We only have the gym twice a week, so there should be time to help Violet learn a little more self defense. She’s smart and quick. She can do it.
I’m more worried about my own lessons. I have to put in so much extra hours to be up to date in our reading materials. Before Basgiath, Violet helped me to study. She often read aloud the texts while I tried to memorize its content. It’s easier. When I’m trying to read, it often makes me so frustrated. I’m trying to read, but I can’t. It’s a really slow process. But because of this I’m good at making notes. I only write down what is really important ‘cause later I have to read it again.
I hope the lessons will be tolerable. I can’t have Violet with me all the time. It’s same for her. She needs to practice her skills before we’ll have to handle the Gauntlet - the vertical obstacle course they told us we’ll have to master when the leaves turn colors in two months.
If we can complete the final Gauntlet, we’ll walk through the natural box canyon above it that leads to the flight field for Presentation, where this year’s dragons willing to bond will get their first look at the remaining cadets. Two days after that, Threshing will occur in the valley beneath the citadel.
I glance around at my new squadmates and can’t help but wonder which of us, if any, will make it to that flight field, let alone that valley.
Don’t borrow tomorrow’s trouble.
“And if we’re not?” One smart-ass first-year behind me asks.
I don’t bother looking, instead I turn to Liam and roll my eyes at the stupid’s girl comment.
He snickers but doesn’t say anything.
“Then I won’t have to be concerned with learning your name, since it will be read off tomorrow morning” Theo answers with a shrug.
A third-year ahead of me snorts a laugh.
Yeah, I totally understand you. It was funny. Or just my sense of humor is sucks.
“You have about twenty minutes to get to class,” Theo says to the seven of us first-years. “Fourth floor, second room on the left in the academic wing. Get your shit together and don’t be late.” Our squad breaks apart around the same time the others do, transforming the courtyard from an orderly formation to a crowd of chatting cadets. The second- and third-years walk off in another direction, including Theo.
“Go, grab your stuff and meet me here okay?” Liam says
“You’d be lost without me anyway.” I reply while heading to the doors.
“And here I thought you’d be kinder with a good night sleep, Snappy.” He sighs.
“Damn, I told you to drop this ridiculous nickname.” I hiss at him.
“Or what? We’re squadmates, you can’t hurt me” he winks.
“No. I can’t kill you. It’s completly different.” I say smiling.
“Whooah look at that. You can smile.”
“Shut up. Go grab your pack or I leave you here.” I roll my eyes.
I go to the dormitory where my bed is, and pick up my rucksack from under it.
When I walk out the door I see Violet at the center of the courtyard and her expression make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. She’s looking at somebody.
Oh shit.
Xaden Riorson is watching her with narrowed eyes, the sleeves of his uniform rolled up his massive arms that remain folded across his chest, the warning in his relic-covered arm on full display as a third-year next to him says something that he blatantly ignores.
Garrick was he?
There’s maybe twenty feet between us. My fingers twitch, ready to grab one of the blades sheathed at my ribs.
His head tilts and he studies me with those impossibly dark eyes, like he’s deciding where I’m most vulnerable. So he noticed me when I exited the dormitory. Interesting.
He smirks then his attention shifts to Violet, and Dain who emerges from behind the pillar.
Shit, do they have to be so obvious? Someone might misinterpret it.
Violet says something to Dain, then his gaze snaps up as the crowd thins out around us.
„I already knew your parents are tight,” Xaden calls out, a cruel smile tilting his lips. „But do you two have to be so fucking obvious?”
I told you, I sigh when the few cadets who are still in the rotunda turn to look at them.
„Let me guess,” Xaden continues, glancing between Dain and Violet, „Childhood friends? First loves, even?”
„I expected you to do a better job hiding where your affections lie, Aetos.” Xaden moves, walking down the steps.
Shit. Shit. Shit.
I need to do something.
„Come on Riorson, you have eyes, now use it. You really think that Violet and Dain? I thought you’re smarter than that.” I sigh with feigned disappointment.
„Melgren?” He turns to me. „What are you? A watchdog? Always at Violet’s legs?”
Fucking asshole.
„Now you’re trying to insult me? How kind of you.” I smile at him sweetly. „And no. Violet can protect herself. I just don’t like the fact that now everybody thinks that they have something between them because of you. I didn’t know you liked to gossip.”
„With this attitude you won’t last long, Melgren. Throwing insults at everybody who dares to talk to you or Sorrengail.” He tilts his head to the side. „It’s like you’re a fucking ray of sunshine.”
„Then forgive this little Sunshine and her friend because we’ll have a lesson soon, and it would cast a really bad light on us if we were late. Don’t you think wingleader?” I gesture toward Violet to come with me.
„Hm. Then we should continue our interesting conversation later.” He says slowly with a smirk and I have a bad feeling about it. „And don’t forget to watch your back, Sunshine.” He turns and walks away.
Sunshine? A nickname? Really?
Damn, he’s handsome for sure but at the same time an enermous prick.

you keep mentioning it, so I'm curious what the Burri empire was like?
Yeah that is a pretty huge area of Lore I haven't elaborated on. This is going to kind of suck ass without a map (the imperial Wardin map will help A Little) but it takes me too goddamn long to make maps I'm satisfied with enough to post so,.... here we go:
There are three historical 'Burri Empires', though only the latter two are directly related.
The first Burri empire is considered ancient history, and is only colloquially referred to as such in the Burri/Wardi context because its lands extended to and heavily relied upon the region now called Bur. The empire’s actual origin point or initial ethnic makeup is extremely unclear, just that it began with waves of nomadic, khaitborne warriors from the northwest conquering lands to the east-southeast all the way to the mouth of the Viper seaway. These people were likely some of the very first humans to adopt khait for riding (human use as pack, plow, and chariot animals predated this) and developed the eastern khait morph. They established the beginnings of the eastern end of the inner sea trade and likely built (or at least expanded) what would become the city-states of Old Bur and Titenegal. The reason for their collapse is not historically known, but competition with peoples on the other sides of the Viper (proto-Wardi to the east, Dain speakers to the north) likely contributed.
The second Burri empire is more recent history and lasted from about 1100-800 BP (before present). The city of Old Bur had long been a kingdom, and began a series of territorial conquests around and across the inner seaway to fully monopolize the eastern inner sea trade. It extended west along the inner seas, and along the eastern and southern coasts of what is now Wardin in the White Sea, and across most of the lengths of the Hsuke and Yamage rivers (two main rivers that feed agricultural Burri land). It was a fairly standard imperial entity with dynastic emperors who were also the high priests of the Burri faith (though not considered divine in nature)
Old Bur at its peak drew huge waves of immigration due to trade, and became the most heavily populated human city in the history of this world (its population was probably about 1.25 million, which was fucking huge). It (and basically every other coastal city, and much of its key agricultural labds) flooded over a period of decades about 800 years before present, which was a significant contributor to the 2nd Burri empire’s collapse. The other factors were largely political and military- most of its military power was naval, and it was not as effective at dealing with land-based rebellion.
It shattered into larger western and smaller eastern halves, each of which continued to function autonomously for a period. The eastern half (part of the lands comprising the contemporary Wardi empire), composed of conquered city-states with no allyship amongst themselves, fell apart very quickly (it kept chugging for about 20 years). The western half persisted in some form far longer, though lost most of its territory and for all intents and purposes had dissolved into a single country within 150 years.
The third Burri empire was this persisting western country’s last gasp of imperialism, spurred largely by an ambitious emperor attempting to revive the region’s lost glory days. It lasted from about 580-200 years BP. This was most successful to the east, where the still-fragmented city-states could not successfully unite and mobilize against the threat. Much of what is now Imperial Wardin was yet again conquered. The third Burri empire was much smaller than the second, and only comprised the western lands around the Hsuke and Yamage rivers and along the Mouth (seaway where the White Sea flows into the Inner Seaway and the Viper), and the lands on the eastern coasts of the Mouth (Mostly the lands that presently comprise the city-states of Godsmouth, Ephennos, Jazait, and Wardin).
The third Burri empire collapsed about 200 years BP partly due to plague, partly due to war with a (briefly united) coalition of Dain kings, partly due to weak leadership and a lack of a strong, unifying national identity, and partly due to a burgeoning faith (first born during the 2nd imperial Burri period and coming to full fruition in the 3rd) out of syncretism between Burri polytheism and native Wardi and Wogan beliefs, which would become the contemporary Wardi faith. Imperial Wardin rose pretty directly out of its ashes, building a united identity in a heavily multicultural landscape with the spread of the Wardi faith and skilled diplomacy allying several of the city-states without conquest (and then conquering the rest).
Contemporary Bur is a surviving fragment of the former empire, but in a very different state due to the political upheaval of its collapse. It is currently a democracy with elected officials governing three major allied city-regions (Bur, Titenegal, and Kosov) (what once was 'Old Bur' is a mostly flooded isle in the sea) and no central government. All three are in a (somewhat tense) political alliance with the Wardi Empire, as the only major ally to the empire that is Not a tributary state. Both the Bur and Wardi regions are in hostile relations with the royal Dains (a smattering of monarchies on the north side of the Viper seaway) and their alliance has been relatively stable and not directly threatening (as Imperial Wardin has mostly been content in its expansion being focused mostly on contiguous lands to the east, and its sole attempt at overseas conquest (in Finnerich) was a catastrophic failure)
While their alliance is not tributary in nature or a result of conquering, many fear that it’s headed in this direction. Titenegal has close ties to the imperial city of Godsmouth (located directly across the Mouth) and has long been courted into a closer political alliance- the benefits being greater security and tremendous economic benefits, the cons being that this would absolutely be functionally Titenegal being absorbed into the Wardi empire and would result in the allied territory of greater Bur being fractured (which could cause internal chaos, and very easily lead to Bur and Kosov being absorbed through diplomatic coercion or outright conquering as well).

Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros - blurrypetals review
originally posted jan. 23, 2025 - ★★★★★
It is wild to me how insanely popular this series has become even in just the year since I read Fourth Wing and Iron Flame. I went to a midnight release party for it with a good friend and I was stunned by how busy it was, how bookish culture felt alive and well and comforting on a day where I absolutely did not feel very hopeful for the state of the world after the inauguration.
I think it's also interesting, the amount of people insisting these books are not political, that books shouldn't even be political in the first place and I'm sitting here like...you reading the same books I am? Because...honey. These books are about a political struggle.
The fact that this book has so much diplomacy, political intrigue, subterfuge, etc. should have been a tipoff to most, to say the least. Those who are not willing to engage with a book's political stance and just read it for smut are missing the damn point, not just of these books, but of reading in general.
Anyway, it's been a rough week. Let's talk about this new smutty fun dragon book.
I'm among the first in my circle to read this new book and, as my husband and friends have asked me how I liked it, I kept answering that it was a lot of diplomacy, but that it was very well-balanced with all the other elements, and while I'm always going to remember the diplomacy aspects of this book the most, I do think it was a very well-balanced book and the best on a craft level in the series so far.
Onyx Storm took longer for Yarros to write than Iron Flame did and it really shows. While I still really loved Iron Flame, it definitely still has a scrappiness to it that makes it feel like Fourth Wing in that Yarros was still getting used to writing fantasy, still figuring out how best to make this story work.
Now, however, Yarros's craft feels so much more self-assured, confident. This was true of Iron Flame, but I also love that this extends to Violet's relationship with Xaden, in that Violet chose him in the very first book and, despite their relationship's ups and downs, they have only ever wanted each other since they got together. It's refreshing, especially since the first book flirted with the idea of a love triangle with Dain, but no, Dain and Violet are just friends and we've got 2 books to go! The conflict isn't about which man she's going to choose, it's about Basgiath, it's about their country, their continent, their whole world.
I also like that the romance builds into the conflict, what with the threat of Xaden turning venin, how this affects not only his and Violet's relationship, his relationship with Sgaeyl, Violet's relationships with Tairn and Andarna, and their relationships with all their friends and allies. It's great! I think it marries the external threats with the internal threats beautifully.
And speaking of their friends and allies, I did really enjoy getting out of Basgiath for so much of this book, looking for Andarna's kind, trying to make alliances for the oncoming war, looking for a cure for Xaden, and getting to know more auxiliary characters like Garrick and Ridoc.
I think this was an incredibly strong entry in the series, and the way things ended made me extremely excited to find out what happens next! And if it makes the next book even half as good as this one was, Rebecca, then take your time.

Unfiltered Thoughts While Reading: Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros
⚠️⚠️⚠️ BEWARE! SPOILERS AHEAD ⚠️⚠️⚠️
Chapter 1
If I were Violet, I’d be like “Forget these biscuits and EXPLAIN YOURSELF SIR” 😂
If Brennan survived, then why did Tairn’s old rider die?
“Stop bringing logic into an emotional argument.” Hahaha love Violet
I will say though that if she’s going to be mad at Xaden, she can be mad at Brennan for the same thing
Chapter 2
is this foreshadowing? Will Violet or someone else learn the art of ward building to save them all?
“Weapons are the only things that can win this war” for someone so intelligent, I’ve never heard Brennan say anything more foolish than that
Andarna is a teen 😂
will she go through an emo phase? Hahaha
At least it sounds like her mom wasn’t in on this murder plot
“Fucking Dain.”
Lol agreed
Chapter 4
I love how Dain acts like nothing happened. Like, wtf? Why are you surprised Violet hates you?!
Unless he didn’t know about the plan somehow and we all just assumed he did.
Also, maybe another mind reader read his mind and he didn’t actually tattle? But even if that’s the case, he still read Violet’s memories without her permission this whole school year
Chapter 5
“I’m pleasantly fuddled but not entirely sloshed.”
Lol I’m using that the next time I get drunk
Chapter 6
Violet has more self-control than me. She should have let Xaden stay the night lol
Chapter 7
I knew it! So, less dragons are bonding because of the war and the venin. I wonder if they are bonding with the rebels or just staying out of it completely
Chapter 8
so Aaric is the kings son?! Bold move
And now Liam’s little sister?! This series is going to kill me 😭😭😭
oh shes angry lol
“What in the angry-Mairi was that about?”
Lol I love Rhiannon
“I've danced with Malek more than my fair share over this last year and told him to fuck right off every single time. ”
LOL
Fuck this dragon and fuck Varrish. What. The. Hell.
I’d be so pissed if someone ran after that because that stupid dragon is killing people in the way anyways. Hide ya kids, hide ya wife, they’re flaming everyone up in here.
“If Solas comes near you again, he knows I will devour his human whole and let him rot within me while his heart still beats, and then I'll take the eye I so graciously left him." "That's...graphic."
Tairn has the best threats lol he and Violet were made for each other
Chapter 9
I knew Imogen would grow on me!
Omg I bet the person they’re interrogating is Xaden. He never made it out to his post and it’s why he hasn’t come to see Violet. I just don’t know how they can keep the dragons from each other
“"I can take her," Sloane fires back, white-knuckling her knife, "From what your letter said last year, her joints pop right out. How hard can it be?" "Seriously?" I shoot a reproachful look at Imogen. "I can explain." Imogen puts her hand over her heart, "You see, I didn't like you last year, remember? You're kind of an acquired taste."”
hahahaha I love the banter in this series
OMG!!! Nadine!!! I am NOT okay with how fast characters be dying in this damn series!! 😭😭😭
Chapter 10
I knew this dude was sent by Aetos. So freaking sloppy! And the more this book goes on, the more I think Dain didn’t know about the War Games thing. He’s an annoying prick but I don’t see him being malicious enough to let Violet walk to her death. Plus, I actually don’t recall him shitting on people with a relic. He just seems to hate Xaden lol
Welp, there goes my theory about Xaden being tortured lol
I find it hilarious that Xaden is so obsessed with Violet’s hair lol
Chapter 11
“Coconspirators with a vested interest in keeping each other alive.”
Lol love Imogen. She’s giving me Ron Swanson vibes here with his “work proximity associates” speech 😂😂😂
Banning people from knowledge in order to keep their corrupt secrets from the public is not sustainable. Sure, it drastically slows the distribution of information but the truth always comes out - it’s just a matter of when!
I wonder if the Scribes are translating everything from the old language in order to hide more lies
Varrish grinning at Violet saying “dragons don’t take orders from humans” does not bode well. Has he found a way to control dragons? Or at least influence them with blackmail or something else?
Varrish is such a dick. Like, get a life dude.
Chapter 12
That comment about a blade of grass sticking to Violet was so random.
Chapter 13
This Varrish guy is the worst. He’s like Miss Umbridge from the Harry Potter series
“You wish you were my type. I’m phenomenal in bed.”
Hahahaha I love Imogen. SHE BETTER NOT DIE
Oh no, I bet it’s that freaking survival class test! They’re getting kidnapped!
Chapter 14
Tairn is so sassy and I love it
Obviously, the water is drugged! Have they never read a fantasy novel?!
I adore Ridoc 😍
HE BETTER NOT DIE
You would think there would be more crossover activities and exercises between riders and infantry if they have to work together so much and infantry are expected to work alongside dragons
Chapter 15
Rhiannon is responding to Violet keeping secrets way better than Violet is to Xaden lol She’s like “hey, you’re hiding something and that’s fine but don’t lie about lying” with Violet. And Xaden is like “Honestly, I have secrets I can’t tell but here are all of the intimate details of my life.” Come on Violet! Quit trippin' and get back with Xaden lol
I don’t like the rift going on between Rhiannon and Violet this book. They need each other and it’s annoying lol
Alright 2 things that annoy me about this book so far:
1. The lack of Xaden and Violet scenes 2. Violet being mad at Xaden for keeping secrets from her in order to protect others
Chapter 16
Yesssss, Imogen is spitting facts!!! Hopefully this will convince Violet to let him back in
“I’m still speaking.”
Okay Imogen 👀 She could get it 😏
Oh man, I really hope nothing happens to Rhi’s family and she blames Violet for keeping her in the dark
Of course she misses the interrogation technique class!!! Bad move man
Chapter 18
Theory time: Omg is death what’s powering the wards??? Is that why so many more people are dying at an alarming rate? They need more students to die to power up the wards? And maybe daggers work because they are an instrument for causing death?
“I want you.” All day. Every day.
LOLLL
Omg I love how ride or die Rhiannon is about Violet lol
Who’s soul is Nolon mending?!
Chapter 19
Theory time: Solas’ orange is off and Dain’s dragon's breath stinks because they’re giving the dragons some concoction. Maybe it’s to control them?
“Humans have the memories of gnats. Dragons hold grudges.”
Pearls of wisdom from Tairn lol
Damn it Tairn lol while I love that he put Varrish and Solas in their place, things just got a whole lot worse for Violet 😬
Chapter 20
“Ugh. Let’s go throw knives at shit.”
😂
Has Mira met Imogen? They’d be two peas in a pod lol
I’m also shook that they kill civilians. Wowwwww
Chapter 21
Man, this is starting to feel like Final Destination since all the Resson survivors are dying one by one
“History and current events are tied because one influences the other.”
Interesting foreshadowing
I like Devera and I feel like she’s trying to do the right thing while the rest of leadership goes to shit. Like Professor McGonagall does when Dumbledore is no longer headmaster
“That’s what we’re not going to do.”
You tell em, Devera!
I bet Varrish will be in charge of the torture lessons given his background and he’s going to try to kill Violet
I was JUST wondering where Dain has been. Haven’t heard his holier than thou whining in a while lol
omg I called it in the last book! Her mom gave Xaden those scars! I also still think I’m right about Dain being guilty of being a prick but not of sending his best friend to get murdered
Rhiannon is so smart! She reminds me of Bree from Legendborn 😍
I knew I liked Aaroc/Cam for a reason! Hope he doesn’t die….
Chapter 22
It’s strange that Violet is so bad at remembering names when she studied to be a Scribe her whole life lol
Chapter 23
For some reason, book 2 reads a little more like a YA novel than the first book
HAVE THEY LEARNED NOTHING?! Don’t eat or drink anything!!!
Okay, you didn’t drink but did you eat the jam?!
Ridoc and his snake confession had me cackling
lol I totally thought Ridoc broke first but he was lying haha
I knew fucking Varrish would somehow weasel himself into this training
They’re using Dain? Well hell.
Also, isn’t his signet supposed to be a secret???
Chapter 24
Wait, they’re practicing on civilians?!?! At what point do people wake up and think “hmmm, we’re the bad guys”?
"We should consider quitting the quadrant." Ridoc jokes as we walk over the door and out of the chamber, "We'd be kickass thieves." "With dragons," Sawyer agrees. "Unstoppable," Ridoc says with a grin.
This is giving Six of Crows and I. Am. Here. For. It.
Unlocking doors? hmmmm interesting
Chapter 25
I know exactly who did this! A scribe! It was the person walking in the hood earlier that Violet noticed. I wonder if it’s her friend or someone else
Those statements have to be true - Markham is acting too squirrelly about them
FUCKING JACK IS BACK?!
Idk how I feel about this book now lol like really?
Hundreds of cadets die every year and they spent valuable resources and time to mend him?! What happened to “we let the weak die”?! This is utter bull
Also, Nolon mentioned how hard mending a soul is….it doesn’t sound like Jack has a soul
Chapter 26
I love the nonchalant way Sawyer and Ridoc are ready to murder Jack lol
Chapter 27
Territorial Xaden is the best lollll he’s like who the hell's jacket is that and why isn’t it mine?! 😂
Well, that escalated quickly 👀🔥
Chapter 28
Oh that has to be his ex. The one that Bodhi mentioned
I knew it!
Chapter 29
“Pull yourself together”
Tairn with the tough love 😂😂😂
“I will already know, as I am continuously with you,” he grumbles. “Forced to bear witness to the awkwardness that is twenty one year old humans.”
💀💀💀
I forgot who Professor Kaori is but I love them!!
Chapter 30
FINALLY Violet realizes how hypocritical she was being about Xaden when she tells her friends part of the truth
I bet Andarna is sleeping longer than expected because she’s going to be powerful as hell lol
Holy shit. Too many people die too often in this series. I don’t even remember who Eya is!
Ridoc better not die
Chapter 31
Freaking JACK saved her?!?! What is this rouse?!
I 👏🏾 don’t 👏🏾 trust 👏🏾 him 👏🏾
Let’s go Aaric! Sidebar, I need a novella about him. He sounds hot
Chapter 32
I thought Aaric ‘s brother died in Threshing! Well I guess Xaden could have killed him then lol
There’s no way Nasya sleeps through his post every time. I bet he’s spying on them
Oh Imogen has it taken care of lol good. Also, that’s a badass signet!
Chapter 34
“The birth of iron rain” !?
That sounds ominous
OMG LADY STOP DRINKING THINGS FROM OTHER PEOPLE
Fucking hell. I honestly can’t even feel anger for Nolon’s betrayal because I’m too annoyed with Violet rn lol
Chapter 36
So Dain is finally choosing the right side!
I’m so glad Varrish is dead! He’s the worst lol. Violet will definitely have to watch her back from Solas
Yay! Devera came through!
The secret is out! Finally!
Chapter 37
🌶️🌶️🌶️
Chapter 38
Andarna is back!!! Yayyy!
I bet this “blood magic” means sacrifice! they have to kill people to build a new ward
I knew Mira would punch Brennan after seeing him for the first time haha
Chapter 39
The 6 strongest riders: Caden, Felix, suri, bodhi, violet, Brennan - I’m surprised Mira isn’t one
Chapter 40
I do think Violet is a little slow on the uptake when it comes to understanding her power which is surprising since she’s so smart
I’m excited about this sibling trip lol
Chapter 41
“Fuck it. We don’t need a luminary.”
Mira is a whole vibe lol
Cat is the worst and Violet is annoying me by listening to her lol Xaden is obsessed with you girl - ignore this jelly belly lady
Well that explains why Violet was trippin' hahaha wasn’t her fault
Chapter 43
yeah I agree - allowing people to die on the parapet is unnecessary lol
Holy shit ! This entire hike is stressful as fuck!
RIDOC!!!
Chapter 45
“The problem with mankind is we too often find our souls to be a fair price for power.”
Chapter 47
I hope Violet kicks Cat’s ass and makes it embarrassing for her lol
Chapter 48
Well that was hawt lol
Xaden talking shit about Dain will never get old lol
The way Xaden feels about Violet reminds me of Rowan to Aelin because his love isn’t conditional and based on if she’s “good” - “If you’re a monster, I’m a monster” (Queen of Shadows)
Xaden is very swoon-worthy lol
Chapter 49
I feel like it’s always Sawyer pitching the idea to just kill an annoying enemy (Cat, Jack, Varrish) and I’m here for it 😂
HE BETTER NOT DIE
oh no….am I starting to find Dain not so bad? Lollll
Chapter 52
Theory time: I really think these nightmares are real - somehow the Sage is communicating with Violet through her dreams Theory Time: I bet she gets captured or agrees to go to the head Sage by the end of this book to set up the next book
Oh god, I really hope an attack doesn’t occur while they’re on this training mission and then Violet feels responsible for not putting up the wards sooner 😬
Chapter 53
Violet must be thinking of Xaden and how he might go mad since his dragon was previously bonded with someone in his direct line
Fucking Solas. I almost forgot about this enemy!
Chapter 54
Honestly I’m surprised she doesn’t have more enemies since if you kill her, you essentially kill 4 beings in one swoop
Andarna is a badass
Chapter 55
No lie, this fight between Xaden and Violet is a little silly and getting exhausting
Ah, I came to the wrong conclusion about Xaden and his bond with Sgaeyl
Chapter 56
Omg is Xadens second signet mind reading? That would explain a lot. It would also explain why he’s scared to share since they execute people with that signet
Called it!!! I’m glad her response was not immediately “I don’t love you anymore”
Now I need to reread these books to see when he reads her mind. Oh man, I hate to say it but it kind of sounds like what Dain did to her last year
hmmmm, that was too easy lol
Ugh, we’ve been here before - Violet discovers a big secret about Xaden right before some war conflict and they’re fighting in the midst of chaos. Not sure I’m a fan that it’s a repeat of the last book lol
Chapter 57
well I’m glad Cat has stopped being a twat and decided that focusing on saving the continent is the way to go over petty squabbles over an ex lol She reminds me of Lysandra but in a good way lol
I think the trouble with the writing of their relationship is that Xaden is so amazing and their relationship is so magnetic that their conflicts feel forced. The obstacles they face within their relationship are hard to develop when Xaden is always saying the right things after they fight lol Not that I’d want it any other way - but I think that’s why I’m struggling with not rolling my eyes when they get into arguments. Violet deserves to be angry about the betrayal but then it just feels like her decision on what she’ll do next about them takes FOREVER and it feels like it’s dragged out across a whole ass book.
Omg did Brennan come?! Is he announcing his “undeadness”?!
Violet immediately wants Xaden to use his secret signet on the others? I don’t disapprove at all but that better mean she will forgive him swiftly lol
It isn’t in Violet to NOT help innocent civilians if she can.
“I love you enough to bear the weight of your disappointment.”
Total mom sacrifice right there!
I need a novella of their mom and dad and how they got together lol
Chapter 58
If I were with the Rebellion, I’d agree to help Navarre on the condition that they make it public knowledge that Venin are real and they’ve been lying to citizens for centuries in order to keep a specific amount of citizens safe - that way, they’re not leaving innocents to die AND if they all survive the battle at Solstice, the rebels will walk away with an additional win (the entire continent knowing the truth)
am I the only one who visualize white walkers from GOT when I read about the venin in this book? Lol
Alright let’s go!!! Way to not turn into the enemies!
Chapter 59
What is with Andarna’s scale colors?! Their changing colors have been mentioned all book - I wonder what’s the significance? Is she a rainbow dragon?! That would be dope lol
Jack's dragon's eyes are weird? Another reference to dragons seeming off! I bet they’re controlling it! But who would want the wards to fail? Who is Jack in league with if Varish is dead? IS Varish even dead?! Did freaking Nolon bring him back to life like he did with Jack?!
What the heck?! Did Jack become venin?! Why did he slaughter his own dragon?!?
Chapter 60
I knew he became venin! But didn’t realize it was for SO LONG!
Well, everything is going to hell in a hand basket
“Fucking Jack.”
Ain’t that the truth lol
There’s no way this battle is in this book, there’s not enough pages left!!!!
Chapter 61
Can Andarna turn invisible??!
I’m so stressed lol
Chapter 62
Omg is Andarna a chameleon?!
Chapter 63
Theory time: Andarna is head of the seventh den of dragons! This is why she’s so unique. She’s not actually black like Tairn . I bet she’s one of one making her the head of her den. It would make sense since she’s an orphan
Add-on to the theory: I think both journals are right but describe it differently. Warrick says six AND the one that combines all which must be what Andarna is since she’s always changing colors. Lyra’s journal says seven because it combines the six and the one
Good thing Andarna can make fire now!
Chapter 64
Not a Liam letter 😭😭😭
This heartfelt moment between Andarna and Violet is everything.
The way that Andarna looks up to Tairn gives me all the feels
What about Sloane?! Can she somehow reverse her power and GIVE instead of siphon?
Ah yep, apparently she can.
Her mom is going to sacrifice herself! 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Chapter 65
I’m honestly surprised Xaden killed the main sage. I figured he’d be a bigger part of the storyline
Don’t tell me Xaden is also now Venin?! 😭
NOOOOO 😭😭😭
Sgaeyl is pissedddd
Chapter 66
OMG WERE THOSE XADENS DREAMS THE WHOLE TIME?!
I can’t recall if Violet only had the nightmares when she slept near Xaden 😭😭😭😭😭😭
I am unwell.

At first, I thought fourth wing series will only have three book.. so I immediately think that it -third one- would be the "finale"
now that I know there will be 5 books.. well.. my earlier posts,
*possible spoilers and FW/IF theories*
I still expecting Dain to be die at the end..
Tairn is also in danger for me..
And all other guesses.. maybe they're not going to happen all at once, not in the third book at least.. but still.. (I'm behind on my ideas for most of them)
also, since there would be two other book, I think we're going to see Xaden and Violet in opposite sides at the end of the third one and in the fourth book they may be "enemies" and maybe we might see Violet trying to find a proper cure.. and the fifth book will be the "final battle"
so,
third book;
Violet will try to find a way/cure to stop the spreading..
Xaden will fight to not surrender that darkness..
Maybe some foreshadowings to the possible "cure" and Violet's research that leads to her dad or to some locations -that will affect the fourth book-.. idk at this point.
Also in story based, I think we might see mostly her research for the cure but also we have an "upcoming war" threat so we are going to read some strategical scenes; with more Aaric and new allies etc, but at the end, the darkness might overcome Xaden so he might turn full "enemy" side (not by his will but mostly maybe to protect others&Violet from himself) so this might lead other's plans to crash (bcs Xaden will probably know their plans&strategical calls) so that lead Violet to be one step ahead of him/venin's in the fourth book.
In character based,
I think the redemption arc of Dain will start to be more visible in that book.
Jesinia become more active character, while Sawyer starts healing (and since Sawyer 's signet is about metals, it would be cool to him having a metal leg) she might even help him and this might effect their love&interests in each other too.
We might start to see more scenes with Aaric like I said, first I was going to ship him with Rhiannon but than I kinda sense that maybe him and Cat might be a thing (after Cat become more "emotionally" stable character; bcs Cat liked Xaden due to his "power&position" so she might be affected by Aaric too if she finds out who he actually is and that leads to a development in their romantic interactions)
I also think we might see more scenes of Garrick and Imogen.. which leads us to connect with them more and by the fifth book when or if one of them gets killed we will suffer more..damnit.. (my guesses is Garrick)
Xaden and Dain scene.. we might get that since Dain never apologize to him properly about Liam.. (and maybe even a heart to heart scene where Xaden tells Dain to; if you really want to prove me that you're sorry "protect her at all cost if something happens to me" -and Dain will be like "I always protect her" "promise" "I promise"- is that too emotional for them? maybe.. but I expect Xaden to be more pessimistic&protective over Violet in that book so anything is possible.)
I also think that in that book, we might say goodbye to one of our main dragons.. (hear me out, Tairn.. why am I thinking that way, let me explain myself..)
so we know that Andarna cannot fly with a rider (yet) and if Tairn dies or sacrifice himself at the end of this book, in fourth book the journey of Violet to find a cure and save Xaden (and maybe figure out the mysteries about herself and venins) become more challenging and this would add storyline more tension.
Either way, if Tairn dies at the end, we might get to see more Andarna&Violet's connection scenes in the fourth and fifth book and since one of the most powerful dragon -Tairn- is dead "finding a cure" would become more essential to create a balance between sides (if Xaden become full enemy at the end).
And also Andarna is a very special dragon so she&we might learn new things about Andarna's species during Violet's search for a cure and her journey -bcs if she leaves with Tairn, Andarna probably wouldn't come with them-. And this might lead to new theories about her signet/powers and "cure" itself.. (I still think that Violet being a truth-sayer would be too obvious, it's reasonable -very very accurate- but I need a more shocking signet; and I cannot think an unexpected type of a truth-sayer power -yet-)
fourth book;
Violet might travel to find the cure (and maybe reunites with some people or uncovers the secrets about her family) and I think Rhiannon or Mira (or both) might accompany her.. (I also expect Imogen and Garrick might come with her too; and we get to see more scenes of them by that. And Dain and Ridoc might come too; Dain to keep his promise to Xaden and for Violet and Ridoc, is Ridoc.. he is their friend..)
and also I read some theories about her hair being a symbol that she is immune or she is literally the cure herself.. maybe we get to learn more about that too..
Aaric's identity might be revealed to the others to add more allies&an army for the "final battle" (so royals might be more included to this book)
We might get to know more about Andarna too in this book.. (maybe while they -Violet and her travel group- are traveling uncharted territories, some might recognize Andarna's species and might tell some stuff about the power she might be holding..
(I don't really know, at this point, I believe Violet might travel with Andarna if Tairn dies at the end of the third book. But also, if Xaden turns completely into a venin, Sgaeyl might also want to help Violet to save her rider; if she doesn't left with Xaden)
I think we get to see more Garrick&Imogen and our other ships during this book too.
and if we get to find out Violet's second signet in the third book, maybe in this one she might try to control her powers.. and uses them during their journey.
and by the end of this book we need an "battle-ish" event so, (in third book they were in Basgiath, in this book we might start with leaving there and Violet headed to her journey&others going to the Aretia/Riorson House so there might be a battle there which venins will lose. -and Dain might die in that part; while helping Violet to save/capture Xaden to cure him, maybe, by "venin" Xaden? I hope not.-)
in the fifth book; final battle
I think, at the beginning we're not going to see Xaden as an ally and we are going to try to cure him first. And later on with the "healed" Xaden, they are going to get ready for the final battle.
and also
I really cannot predict properly.. but..
since in every book at least one important or significant character dies; I want to write a list of my opinions too (it will become a massacre at this point bcs my guesses changes with every theory I read)
in the first book, Liam and Soleil died..
in the second book, Lilith sacrificed herself..
so for the third book, my guess is Tairn.. (I want to be wrong so bad)
for the fourth book, Dain (?) and Jack
and in the fifth book, bloodbath.. no I'm kidding.. kinda.. I hope?.. I don't think Xaden or Violet will be dead so.. Garrick, Mira and Ridoc might die at the end..
oh god it turns out to be a long post.. I got really imaginative at this hour! AND I'm probably mistaken at some points but still.. better than to be forgotten, I update here if anything new comes up as an idea/theory.
and I'm also wondering if we only get Violet's perspective again.. bcs it might change the storyline too since we would only know her journey..

Just a little scene I had in my head and wanted to write down (first "FF" 😱)
Xaden crouched at his backpack fumbling on the flap. The tension in the air was palpable.
I observed Xaden's actions, while Dain persistently tried to convince me to stay.
As he made a step closer to me lifting his hands, I stiffened. In response, my hands instinctively tightened around the hilts of my knife, the familiar weight providing a small sense of reassurance.
Xaden rushed over with big strides halting only a few inches before Dain. His indexfinger nearly touching Dains face.
"You have no right to come near Violet. If you ever speak to her or lay a hand on her again, I will not hesitate to end you," Xaden declared, his voice carrying a lethal undertone.
Despite Xaden's threat, Dain stood his ground defiantly. He met Xaden's intense gaze with a challenging stare of his own and growled, "You don't own her either. So, she should have the freedom to decide for herself."
The tension in the air thickened, leaving the outcome hanging in the balance.
