On Memorial Day 2022, we take a look at the African American origins of the federal holiday established to remember America’s fallen soldiers.

Although May 30, 1868 is cited as the first national commemoration of Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery, events lead by African Americans in Charleston, South Carolina to decorate the graves of fallen Civil War soldiers occurred on May 1, 1865, less than a month after the Confederacy surrendered.

Reports of this early version of Memorial Day or “Decoration Day” as it was called, were rediscovered in the Harvard University archives in the late 1990s by historian David Blight, author of the 2018 biography Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom.

To quote from history.com:

When Charleston fell and Confederate troops evacuated the badly damaged city, those freed from enslavement remained. One of the first things those emancipated men and women did was to give the fallen Union prisoners a proper burial. They exhumed the mass grave and reinterred the bodies in a new cemetery with a tall, whitewashed fence inscribed with the words: “Martyrs of the Race Course.” And then on May 1, 1865, something even more extraordinary happened. According to two reports that Blight found in The New York Tribune and The Charleston Courier, a crowd of 10,000 people, mostly freed slaves with some white missionaries, staged a parade around the race track. Three thousand Black schoolchildren carried bouquets of flowers and sang “John Brown’s Body.” Members of the famed 54th Massachusetts and other Black Union regiments were in attendance and performed double-time marches. Black ministers recited verses from the Bible. Despite the size of the gathering and newspaper coverage, the memory of this event was “suppressed by white Charlestonians in favor of their own version of the day,” Blight stated in the New York Times in 2011.

On May 31, 2010, near a reflecting pool at Hampton Park, the city of Charleston reclaimed this history by installing a plaque commemorating the site as the place where Blacks held the first Memorial Day on May 1, 1865.

During the dedication of the plaque, the city’s mayor at the time, Joe Riley, was present to celebrate the historic occasion which included a brass band and a reenactment of the Massachusetts 54th Regiment.

In 2017, the City of Charleston erected yet another sign reclaiming the history and commemorating the event:

“On May 1, 1865 a parade to honor the Union war dead took place here. The event marked the earliest celebration of what became known as “Memorial Day.” The crowd numbered in the thousands, with African American school children from newly formed Freedmen’s Schools leading the parade. They were followed by church leaders, Freedpeople, Unionists, and members of the 54th Massachusetts 34th and 104th U.S. Colored Infantries. The dead were later reinterred in Beaufort.”

MASTERPOST - Short summaries of all my Original Stories and links to their own dedicated Masterposts

SEVEN : DIVISION UNITED

This story is the one I currently focus on.

It follows the Seventh Division, a dysfunctional superheroes team protecting a fictive, slightly futuristic version of the USA ruled by a martial law. Most of the plot revolves around them and the teenage MC Erwan fighting different antagonists with or without special abilities, while trying to handle their chaotic daily life together.

B-CLASS

B-Class is the only project I've completed so far, taking the form of two French novels and their spin-off.

The setting is a contemporary dystopia with a cast system discriminating and exploiting a group of people called the "B-Class". The main character Icare is a privileged journalist from the A who will change its viewpoint on oppression after falling in love with his own domestic slave Riùn. Then comes Abys the ACAB Boy and they all start a revolution 🔥

Very very queer and politic.

Created circa 2017 and completed in March 2018.

[B-CLASS Related] POUR UN RAYON DE SOLEIL

The spin-off I mentioned above focuses on Icare's past relationship with Ryse, a major antagonist in B-Class.

They used to date 5 years before the story and PURS explains how Icare became depressed and suic!d@l after a whole year of abuse.

Created and completed between November and July 2018.

AN EYE FOR AN EYE

This one has a special place in my heart since it's the first story I've ever created back in middle-school. Many things changed in 10 years but it still tells the journey of Daniil who rebels against and has to run away from his former boss.

At the beginning, Daniil works as a bodyguard for an important member of a criminal organization; but he loses his temper and tries to unalive him when he discovers Akito murd€red his late girlfriend 3 years before. And then they both chase and try to k!ll each other 🤷

May include shit like war flashbacks and Japanese mafia idk

DE A à Z

Zephyr and Adriel are two angels who've lived as a couple in Heaven for thousands of years.

But when Babel, an artificial angel, is created by humans and sent to Heaven to communicate with God, everything collapses. Babel manages to kill God and takes Their place to impose his vision of right and wrong, influenced by the humans' misinterpretation of the Bible. From then on, all romantic and sexual relationships are forbidden, forcing the couple to hide.

When Babel discovers Adriel's love letters, he is kicked out of Heaven and has to find allies on Earth to overthrow Babel and get his lover back.

42 tells the story of Mat, a young woman searching for Sara, her little sister who disappeared years ago. Her investigations lead her to "Number 42", a man who just escaped from a lab experimenting on humans. Since Mat's sister seems to be prisoner from the lab as well, the two of them helped by the amoral Director's oldest son, will try to save Sara and 42 himself.

MINIUM Part. 1

This one is pure heroic fantasy; its universe and lore are my most extended so far.

Gailin, the adoptive son of Kel'Daran's king, passed a deal with him and has to save Kel'Daran from the Selv, an humanoid species invading the Kingdom. A mystic prophecy tells the war can't be won without a half-blooded Selv with mysterious powers.

Due to coincidences and quiproquos, Gailin is manipulated by Aldanys, a teenage thief who pretends she's the Chosen One.

MINIUM Part. 2

According to my writing plan, Minium is supposed to have a second part taking place 5 years after the first one.

After Gailin killed his father/king at the end of Minium 1, he is exiled and his mentor Edelia takes Kel'Daran's throne. When a new war is suddenly started against the kingdom, Edelia realises someone she thought had died wants her dead too.

On the other side of the plot, another protagonist named Lavaan predicts a major antagonist's return through weird prophetic dreams.

[Minium Related] ST-ANRIEL

In Minium, Gailin and elves his kind believe in an entity named Altea and the Gods they gave birth to.

The Anriel is the equivalence of their Holy Bible and tells the story of the Gods and how the world was built from the beginning to the end. It takes the form of an anthology of poems and prayers.

[MINIUM Related] JADE ET MOI

Another Minium spin-off, focusing this time on Osvald's coming out and transition as a trans man. The story takes place on sea as "Jade"/Osvald starts his journey as a pirate after running away from home.

[MINIUM Related] GOLDEN-EYED BEAST

GEB is a Minium spin-off telling the backstory of Lavaan, a 12 years old protagonist. Born with a golden eye in a village who fears this feature after a terrible incident with a cruel golden-eyed enemy, he is treated as an outcast since his childhood.

His life changes when Kalras, a mysterious elf with black magic, destroys his village and murders everyone. Being the only survivor, Lavaan is made prisoner and tortured by Kalras but develops a Stockholm Syndrom and falls in love with him.

From then on, Kalras who turns out to be a cult leader, uses him as a slave a pet in a toxic relationship.

[MINIUM Related] LA SAISON DES BOURGEONS

In Minium, Edelia has a little brother named Veidin who cursed himself to save her as a child. The curse caused him chronic pain, blood, heart and bones fragility and he's doomed to a very short life expectancy.

LSDB tells his love story with Jyëlven, another young man who was cursed and has flowers and thorns growing out of his skin.

[MINIUM Related] THE WARMTH OF OUR COLD LANDS

Just like for the Anriel, Genkhìs will have their own religious texts written.

Inspired by vikings, the people of Genkhàr honour Gods similar to Scandinavians. Each one represents a value, the most worshipped one being Ero, God of Bravery.

ODE TO ODD

My first and only story ever to look like a shonen anime lol--

One of the main characters Naemi is a highschooler with anxiety who just wants to live an ordinary and peaceful life.

But her goth and spiritism-obsessed best friend Sayaka accidentally summons Evelgard, a young necromancer in her living-room. Evelgard decides to befriend her and live in her closet, while trying to open a portal to the World of the Dead to save his late sister's soul. The two girls discover a whole new world after meeting necromancers, exorcists, witches and demons.

SACRED DUST

Another heroic fantasy setting, but this universe is different from Minium's !

In this story, each kingdom worships a God-dess supposed to grant it their protection. When Lidala, the Goddess of Telaman, is murdered by a rival God, she turns to dust and leaves a devastated kingdom behind.

Fortunately, one of her ashes gives birth to a child, Saljän, who soon has to become the priest of Telaman. Aged 16, Saljän hates his responsibilities so much he finally runaways and travels around the world with a little demon named Orgos. Their goal is to gather all the Sacred Dusts to resurrect Lidala before it's too late.

BAD ROMANCE

How to define Bad Romance without telling it's my most fucked-up story ? You can't. The two main characters are such assholes I can't name a protagonist, they're both antagonists.

Derek, a criminal, gangster and drug abuser, kidnaps Jay who sent him to jail 8 years before the story. He aims at mistreating him enough for Jay to kill himself, but he soon discovers that this guy who seems to live an ordinary and boring life is as much of a sociopath as him.

They start making each other's life hell then become addicted to each other, fuck, engage in a toxic relationship and even create a gang together at the end of the plot.

LE ROYAUME DE GAHS

My first attempt to deal with astronomy eventhough I don't understand anything about it-

The story takes place in the sky and is about two stars and their father trying to discover why the Cosmic God decided to kill/destroy all the stars. Meanwhile, there seems to be a perturbation in the cosmos and some shooting stars start turning evil for no apparent reason...

WE ARE THE WILD

The Lion King but with wolves, mixed with Prince of Persia and the COVID-19 pandemic before it existed--

The plot follows Sôkah, a 15 years old werewolf and the son of the Alpha, who's accused of murdering his big brother. The responsible is actually Akbar, his father's counselor who evicted the two sons to take his place when he dies.

Sôkah is banished from the pack and wandering in the forest, discovers the human world. Most humans are dying from a deadly virus nicknamed "white plague", and Sôkah gets rescued by the cousins Ludwig and Weiss. Weiss is a scientist who tries to find a cure to save Ludwig who caught the white plague, and soon discovers werewolves are immune to the disease...

STAR-716

This story's plot is not very developed and I don't know much what will happen through it. But it's once again about someone looking for a missing family member, a mother this time.

Sacha is 13 and grew up in a circus, his mother being a dancer there. But she disappeared a year before (probably after a kidnapping) and Sacha doesn't know where to start his researches. He will be helped by Novak, an irresponsible sex-worker and hopeless romantic who fell in desperate love with the mother after sleeping with her once.

DIMENSION OF DESPAIR

Are you surprised if I tell you this one is about another dimension ? No ?

Well, the MC Megane is a single mother who works hard to raise her 4 years old alone. One day, she wakes up in an unknown dimension ruled by Master, a mysterious person with psychic powers who created the dimension with their own mind.

Turns out it's actually a "harem" where Master gathers people and things he loves or wants. Megane will look for a way to escape and save a little girl named Kadd as well as Zoé, Master's "favorite".

UNTIL SEPTEMBER

A more simple and less fucked-up story, I swear !!

Some sort of teenage literature, Until September focused around Nero, who's having hard times as a bullied 9th grader and discovers he has water powers. From then on, he befriends the other elementaries and has to deal with Hilda, the air elementary who wants to sacrifice all the children to create a Philosopher's Stone.

SCARECREW

Another under-developed lore !

It's a basic apocalyptic/zombie novel with a disease turning all the adults into monsters. A bunch of pre-teens who survived and don't even know each other decide to fight together against the threat and to rebuild their own world.

VIC'TEAM

Mostly shitpost, I don't want to turn it into a novel but more like a bunch of comic strips.

It follows the daily life adventures of highschoolers with teenagers problems like love, exams and family with a comedic tone. The MC's main problem is to be named Volvic (nicknamed Vic) and there are a lot of jokes about it, as well as absurd humor.

Day 30 – Find Wisdom

It’s been said that winning the lottery is the worst thing that can ever happen to you. While there are many people that win the lottery and manage to retain their sanity, there are also many whose lives are ruined because of the sudden receipt of millions in cash.

Gerald Muswagon purchased a $2 lottery ticket and became an instant millionaire in 2011. His $10 million jackpot only lasted a few years. He bought a house and used it as a party spot for a host of leeches. He also bought cars and gifts, while amassing several legal entanglements. Not long after, he was working on a farm to support a girlfriend and six kids. In 2018, he hanged himself in his parents’ garage.

Another lottery winner, Billie Bob Harrell Jr., blew $31 million in just two years after winning a Texas jackpot. His wife and he bought houses and cars for themselves. They also bought them for their family members. The deeply religious family also donated heavily to their church and individual members of the congregation. The money dried up, and their marriage dissolved. Harrell locked himself in a room and committed suicide. Later a financial advisor revealed that Harrell told him that winning the lottery was the worst thing that ever happened to him.

One could think of Moses as a lottery winner, of course. Out of all the babies being slain in Egypt, he was chosen by the daughter of Pharaoh, and adopted as a son of the king. He could have had all the fortune and pleasure that empire had to offer. Yet he considered those riches were not worth comparing to the eternal reward awaiting him.

Riches tend to make themselves wings and fly away. Even the Harrells, who were devout people of faith, had trouble handling sudden riches. The more important thing is to get wisdom. It is far more valuable than all the treasure you can amass in this life. Because gold and silver doesn’t last, and you cannot take it into the next life, like you can the eternal treasure of wisdom. So, study your bible, pray and keep short accounts with God, and there will be treasure enough in heaven.

It is a time when children particularly need high quality personal care and learning experiences. We are dedicated to providing each child with early learning experiences to help them grow and lay the foundation for future school success by nurturing them and helping them love school.

The students in our early education program learn and grow through a biblically integrated, Christ-centered curriculum and nurturing environment. Smaller class sizes allow for individual attention to each student.

Infant Care (Birth-2)

We are very proud to be state-certified to care for infant-aged children. We have classrooms specifically designed for infant-aged children and teachers trained to care for your precious little ones.

Toddler Class (Age 2) Children who will be attending our Toddler Class need to be two years old. Rest assured, your child is not required to be non-diapered for this class. We offer full-day care, with a structured morning class Monday through Friday. The children in the toddler program enjoy circle time, art integration, imaginary play, music, story time, play dough blocks, manipulatives through puzzles and construction toys, Bible Stories, outdoor time, and much more.

Preschool (Ages 3-4) Our Preschool classes are academically focused.

Parents needing variations to these schedules may contact the Early Learning Director. The emphasis of our preschool class is socialization: learning to share, getting along with friends in school, and taking turns. Our curriculum includes daily activity, an introduction to the alphabet, geometric shapes, community helpers, science (including many fun hands-on experiments), farm animals, seasons, holidays, Bible class and verse memorization, music program, and cooking classes. Children in this class need to be three years old by August 31st and fully potty trained before school begins.

Pre-Kindergarten (Ages 4-5) We offer full and part-time Pre-Kindergarten classes at VCS.

Our curriculum includes alphabet and number recognition, phonics, penmanship, social studies (community helpers, holidays), hands-on science, arts and crafts, Bible lessons, weekly chapel, painting, music, cooking classes, and outdoor play and development. Our Pre-K classes are designed to prepare our 4 and 5-year-old students to successfully read in Kindergarten. This is the time when we want to capture their enthusiasm for learning and help them grow in their love of learning.

Extended Learning (Childcare) Families that enroll their child may also benefit from extended hours beyond the class times. Our Early Learning Center is a licensed childcare, accredited by Washington Early Achievers, and voted best of Auburn for 2017 & 2018. We use a curriculum that does not duplicate what they are learning in their classrooms but rather provides an extension to learning in a nurturing and structured environment.

WND spoke in-depth with Varlese, a former Army Mountain Infantry Platoon Sergeant who served in domestic and overseas roles from 2001-2018, including as a sniper section leader. Since 2018, Varlese has also provided security consulting services for public and private sectors, including tactical training, physical and information security, executive protection, protective intelligence, risk management, insider threat mitigation and anti-terrorism.

“There have been several incidents in previous months,” Varlese told WND, “that serve to highlight the continued national security threat presented by this administration’s encouraged flood of illegal aliens over the last three and a half years.”

The number of people entering the U.S. illegally is concerning beyond explanation, said Varlese. “At least 8 million illegal aliens from over 100 countries have crossed the southern border in the last three-and-a-half years,” he noted, adding that “almost all have been released and even transported to 48 states by the DHS or various non-governmental organizations.”

What about security vetting?

“Almost none have been properly vetted,” Varlese told WND, including many thousands of individuals from “hostile or terror haven countries” like Afghanistan, Venezuela, Syria and China. He also pointed out, chillingly, that, “Most of the illegals that have flooded the southern border since … Biden undid all of President Trump’s border policies are military-age males.”

Although “most are likely here for economic reasons,” he said, “there are undoubtedly a significant number of bad actors that have been given a free pass to create sleeper cells in almost every American urban area.”

Example: “Because there are tens of thousands of Chinese nationals, hundreds on the terror watch list, and millions of unvetted individuals scattered across the country,” warns Varlese, “it is not a question of if something bad will happen, but when.” …

He pointed to a brand-new threat with great terror potential: “This threat will only be exacerbated if [Biden] allows unrestricted access to so-called Palestinian refugees, who, let us not forget, celebrated the wanton murder of innocents on Sept. 11, 2001 and Oct. 7, 2023.”

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation is concerned about terrorists coming into the USA with fake identification documents:

Yes, many potential terrorists have come into the USA. Some legally, some illegally.

While the number of potential foreign terrorists in the USA can be debated, as far as aliens and the lands of end time descendants of Israel go (which includes the USA and Canada; see also Lost Tribes and Prophecies: What will happen to Australia, the British Isles, Canada, Europe, New Zealand and the United States of America?), the Bible warns:

43 “The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. 44 He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail.

45 “Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you. 46 And they shall be upon you for a sign and a wonder, and on your descendants forever.

47 “Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joy and gladness of heart, for the abundance of everything, 48 therefore you shall serve your enemies, whom the Lord will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in need of everything; and He will put a yoke of iron on your neck until He has destroyed you. 49 The Lord will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you will not understand, 50 a nation of fierce countenance, which does not respect the elderly nor show favor to the young. 51 And they shall eat the increase of your livestock and the produce of your land, until you are destroyed; they shall not leave you grain or new wine or oil, or the increase of your cattle or the offspring of your flocks, until they have destroyed you. (Deuteronomy 28:43-51)

Because of current and expected future ties to the USA, Canada is expected to suffer basically the same fate as the USA–it will be taken over and its lands will be divided, as that is what the Bible shows will happen to the USA in Daniel 11:39.

The following prophecies in the Book of Isaiah are related to the USA and its Anglo-Saxon descended allies such as the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand:

8 The Lord sent a word against Jacob, And it has fallen on Israel. 9 All the people will know — Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria — … 11 Therefore the Lord shall set up The adversaries of Rezin against him, And spur his enemies on, 12 The Syrians before and the Philistines behind; And they shall devour Israel with an open mouth. (Isaiah 9:8-9, 11-12)

Syrian and Palestinian refugees are a potential problem. The Bible clearly is prophesying problems from some Syrians and some Palestinians. And this would be expected to include terrorism.

Notice some biblical prophecies:

5 They have corrupted themselves; They are not His children, Because of their blemish: A perverse and crooked generation. … 25 The sword shall destroy outside; There shall be terror within (Deuteronomy 32:5,25)

12 “Cry and wail, son of man; For it will be against My people, Against all the princes of Israel. Terrors including the sword will be against My people; Therefore strike your thigh. (Ezekiel 21:12)

25 Because you disdained all my counsel, And would have none of my rebuke, 26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your terror comes, 27 When your terror comes like a storm, And your destruction comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you. (Proverbs 1:25-27)

5 Also they are afraid of height, And of terrors in the way (Ecclesiastes 12:5).

6 You have forsaken Me,” says the Lord, “You have gone backward. Therefore I will stretch out My hand against you and destroy you; I am weary of relenting! 7 And I will winnow them with a winnowing fan in the gates of the land; I will bereave them of children; I will destroy My people, Since they do not return from their ways. 8 Their widows will be increased to Me more than the sand of the seas; I will bring against them, Against the mother of the young men, A plunderer at noonday; I will cause anguish and terror to fall on them suddenly. Many political, media, and other leaders refuse to believe the Bible, but that those of us who believe the Bible realize that terrorism is prophesied.

While most migrants are not terrorists, some are dangerous and will be dangerous to the USA and Canada.

USA Attacks! Terror will come!

On February 2, 2024, the USA launched a massive attack against what it claimed were Iranian-back militias in retaliation for strikes against USA troops and other interests. Iraq and Iran condemned these attacks. Is this the start of World War Three? Who will be the protagonist for WWIII? What about a larger regional conflict in the Middle East? Darrell Lucus at Loud, Liberal, and Christian:

That priority is a big reason why I haven’t hesitated to put people on blast even when I agree with them or support what they do in principle. But that doesn’t mean I have to like it. In the last few years, I’ve experienced this with Christian investigative journalist Julie Roys. She is indisputably doing this country a public service by calling out waste, fraud, and abuse in the church—and doing so in a way that can’t be dismissed as anti-Christian bias. When I first learned about her in 2020, I found myself sharing her work almost on sight. But in the last few years, it has become increasingly apparent that she has glaring moral blind spots—and they’re glaring enough that I have not been able to unequivocally support her. I see a number of parallels between Roys and another outlet whose undeniably good work was obscured by serious ethical lapses. Namely, Gawker.

I first stumbled on Roys by accident in December 2020, when she reported that one of the titans of the evangelical world, John MacArthur, was covering up a potential COVID-19 outbreak at his San Fernando Valley megachurch, Grace Community Church. Just before Christmas, Roys spoke with a member of GCC’s leadership team who revealed several members had COVID. However, MacArthur and the rest of GCC’s leadership didn’t report it to Los Angeles County authorities even though they were required to do so. A week later, Roys unearthed evidence that proved not just beyond reasonable doubt, but ALL doubt, that GCC was in the throes of a COVID outbreak. At least two fellowship groups had COVID clusters, and several staffers had caught it after a Christmas party. As outrageous as this was in and of itself, it was even more so because MacArthur had spent the summer of 2020 holding a full schedule of services with no masking of social distancing whatsoever. To pile obscenity on top of insult and injury, Southern California’s hospitals were being stretched to their breaking point during the worst of the winter 2020 COVID surge.

While sounding the alarm on Daily Kos here and here, I decided to look more into Roys—and was impressed. For instance, her reporting was largely responsible for bringing down another evangelical titan, James MacDonald. This was a local story for Roys, since MacDonald was the founding pastor of Harvest Bible Chapel in Rolling Meadows, Illinois, a Chicago suburb; Roys is a Chicago girl. Roys’ reporting from 2018 to 2019 revealed a long-standing pattern of bullying, corruption, and almost Trumpian lying by MacDonald and other church leaders. Harvest fired Macdonald in February 2019 after he was caught on tape degrading Roys and joking about framing the CEO of Christianity Today for possessing child sex abuse material. I also noticed that Roys turned the hot lights on abusive and corrupt behavior from the likes of John Piper and Mark Driscoll.

Seeing this made me want to stand up and applaud. Whenever the mainstream media or liberal bloggers called out the religious right or their heroes, invariably we get charged with anti-Christian bias. That’s been true long before Trump. However, that excuse didn’t fly when Roys turned the hot lights on them. In an era when this country has become dangerously polarized, Roys seemed to be providing a public service. I was especially pleased since at the start of 2021, I joined Daily Kos’ community contributors team in part because Daily Kos’ staffers saw me as someone who could show there was such a thing as a Christian left. There’s been a good deal of hostility toward people of faith among much of the Daily Kos constituency, in part because of the religious right’s outrages. I saw part of my mandate as highlighting people like Roys, since she was an example of Christians cleaning their own house.

[...] Every time I think about how Roys handled this, I find myself thinking back to the moment that cost Gawker any chance of survival when it was forced to cough up $140 million to Hulk Hogan for posting a sex tape of Hogan—a lawsuit bankrolled by billionaire venture capitalist Peter Thiel. In 2015, just before that verdict was handed down, the irreverent gossip blog ran an article that claimed Conde Nast Chief Financial Officer David Geithner, the brother of President Obama’s Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, was being extorted by a gay porn star and male escort. As the story goes, when Geithner reneged on a deal to meet up with the porn star on a trip to Chicago, the escort went to Gawker’s Jordan Sargent and offered to tell all. He supplied copies of text exchanges between himself and Geithner and a selfie that Geithner supposedly sent him.

[...] It’s my considered opinion that the Geithner fiasco scared off any potential buyers. After all, even if the Hogan suit hadn’t driven Gawker out of business, any lawsuit by Geithner certainly would have done so. Geithner would have had an infinitely stronger case than Hogan. Not only did it invade his privacy, but more seriously, it made itself complicit in a ham-handed attempt to extort him. It’s sad, because Gawker indisputably did a lot of good work. It turned the hot lights on Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s substance abuse, and revealed that a Texas Internet programmer was actually a notorious Reddit troll linked to a tranche of racist and obscene posts. According to Folkenflik, Gawker was “rarely in better form” when it revealed Bill O’Reilly used his influence to start an investigation of his ex-wife’s boyfriend. As Folkenflik put it, it was a classic case of Gawker “bird-dogg(ing) the powerful who bullied other people with less stature and fewer resources.”

But all of that got obscured by a culture in which it was acceptable to publish something just because it was true. Granted, Roys hasn’t veered into potentially criminal conduct like Gawker did here. But the mentality was too similar for comfort. And it was such that I cannot unequivocally support her. It really stings because Roys is undeniably doing good work. She not only did a good measure of the heavy lifting exposing Bickle’s depravity, but is also largely responsible for showing that the rot at Gateway Church extended way beyond Robert Morris. But the way she handled Hatmaker’s divorce still leaves a rancid taste in my mouth.

[...] On paper, calling Roys would have been at the top of my list. But I couldn’t do so in good conscience given her disturbing ethical lapse with Hatmaker’s divorce. Some may think it’s purity trolling. But giving Roys a pass for this would be no different from how right-wing evangelicals who are willing to overlook Donald Trump’s depravities. They may be willing to excuse outrageous and unacceptable behavior just because someone does what they like. I am not. And neither are a lot of Christian Dems or right-leaning Christians who are never-Trumpers. Roys is fulfilling an important niche—calling out waste and fraud in the church. But this episode proves that we need more journalists who are willing to do so—while upholding basic standards of integrity. We’re in a line of work where how you get the story matters as much as getting the story. And that goes quadruple for Christian journalists.

Darrell Lucus is correct: While Julie Roys is doing a valuable service exposing the misdeeds of Christian conservatives, she does so in a way that compromises ethics.

In another sign of how the pay TV marketplace is evolving, Up Entertainment is expanding its streaming offering by bundling in outlets that fit with the company’s faith and family-oriented entertainment theme.

Gospel legend Bill Gaither has teamed with Up to bring his GaitherTV+ package of gospel music and specials to the Up Faith and Family streaming platform as of next month. Also joining the Up Faith and Family bundle later this year, during the third quarter, is Minno, the indie streamer focused on content for kids that draws on the Bible and other spiritual themes.

Up Faith and Family has been available as an indie streamer since 2013, starting out with its G Movies service and rebranding to Up Faith and Family in 2018. The service has about 1.4 million subscribers at present. Charley Humbard, founder and CEO of Atlanta-based Up Entertainment, sees the expansion as a natural fit for Up Entertainment as well as consumers. He has a five-year target of reaching as many as 15 million-20 million subscribers with the broader offering that has something for older audiences as well as the youngest members of the household.

“The nice thing is we’ve been able to diversify our business,” Humbard told Variety. “We started early enough and we’ve had time to figure out a lot about the market for subscription streaming before there was real pressure. We started growing in 2018 at a rapid rate.”

The flagship Up Entertainment cable channel still reaches nearly 50 million cable households by traditional linear distribution. Up’s companion network Aspire still has linear distribution of around 40 million households. Those channels provide steady cash flow that has allowed Up Entertainment to grow. Humbard is well aware that those linear distribution numbers will shrink over the long-term given the impact of cord-cutting. Like larger studio rivals, Up Entertainment’s push to bundle multiple channels into its offering is a means of driving more engagement with subscribers and reducing churn.

Up Entertainment remains privately held. Producer Larry Levinson is one of Humbard’s partners in the venture.

“We’re happy to be 20 years in business. It’s tough out there for an independent,” Humbard said. “We’ve gone through so much. It’s like we were selling wagons and then all of a sudden it’s 1910 and there are cars going by on the road. We got into the streaming business without completely losing our wagon business.”

With the GaitherTV+ and Minno pacts, Humbard is eager to see how Up’s target audience responds to a diversified offering. Up’s research has found that there are about 60 million consumers in the U.S. who identify as “seeking uplifting programming services that align with their values.” That gives Up plenty of runway.

“We’re like Netflix without all the dark stuff,” Humbard joked. “We have documentaries, dramas, comedies, kids shows — everything Netflix has and it’s all uplifting.”

Gaither’s library of musical series and specials will be catnip to the Up audience, Humbard predicted.

“We had no idea when we began recording videos where mass media and communication would one day be,” said Gaither. “It is exciting to see our decades of performances and songs become available to folks far and wide through the work that Up Entertainment is doing. Their emphasis on uplifting, family-friendly entertainment compliments our mission to offer daily encouragement and eternal hope through Gospel music.”

Minno, based in Nashville, launched in 2018 with largely animated content.

“Our mission has always been to support families’ spiritual journey by providing engaging, imaginative content that sparks curiosity about God and the Bible,” said Erick Goss, Minno CEO and co-founder. “Joining this bundle allows us to reach even more families, offering them a safe, enriching viewing experience that aligns with Up Entertainment’s commitment to uplifting, family-friendly programming.”

Up Faith and Family will remain advertising-free. The monthly price for the bundle will be $9.99, or $99 a year, compared to $5.99 for the Up package at present. Up, GaitherTV+ and Minno will also remain available for a la carte purchases.

“While other streamers are raising prices and inserting ads, we’re thrilled to be able to partner with trusted brands like Gaither Music and Minno to provide quality, uplifting entertainment ad-free for an affordable price,” said Philip Manwaring, Up Entertainment’s head of streaming.

Some Christians used to think that lavish art was a distraction from prayer, however today there is a rich tradition of christian art which is seen as a way to worship God

Cross - the cross is one of the most recognisable christian symbols, representing the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ

Christ Pantocrator - Representation of Jesus Christ portraying him as the 'ruler of all'. Typically shown with a serious expression with one hand raised in blessing and the other holding a book (symbolises his role as judge and teacher)

Angels - celestial beings that are believed to serve as messangers and guardians

Christian art definitely uses less pattern and abstract forms and more realistic figures. I want to extract common themes and create simple motifs from the shapes to create a tessellated pattern to form an interesting system, translating Christian art into Islamic geometrical patterns.

My Story in gist

Finding God again this time really is a different way of me looking at life again

rth time in Trials and tribulations with God, added to this my daughter is not with me which makes me grieve even more as I do daily which is why I write , bible study and draw as well. Along with research as well. Makes it crazy because this go around is more milk, women's vitamins next shopping trip, yougurt, and also different juices and other health methods of eating because I am going to go vegan best way possible along with tryin to maintain this mind set because next is keeping my mouth shut and really watch what I carry meaning word vomit. Living life in silence is easy but God adding a possible baby to my life of a picture kind of hurts in a sense because, I really don't know how this is going to go in life but main goal is being healthy, taking things slow. Add healthy exercising along with not falling into a depressive state because now I can take the wisdom I had from back in them days because in reality I am letting go alot right now if this is truth me having another baby my first child is my truth this one is my hope. Being really honest as well speaking this change is going to be a hard one but it will be worth it for my health and the baby. Just don't want to make the same mistakes as before . Because reality I had to chose my daughter over her father , thankfully her Aunt has her but I know She may not allow a relationship with my child because of her personal feelings from me having her brother arrested in April of 2018 because of what had happened. The way my mind views the world is very more different than the rest as life goes on and I rebuild my life in the ways I do. Never knew my daughter's father was going to play switcha round for fool in this love game now he can be marked as a spade.

Canon Camera

The Canon 750D is a DSLR camera made by Canon, a famous Japanese company, released in February 2015. My parents bought it for me in 2018 for my photography class. It was a great budget to mid-range camera. It's important for my photography hobby, letting me capture and share moments. It's a reminder of my creativity and adventures, used in many places. It has enhanced my storytelling skills through creative digital tools.

Bible

This Bible, a black leather New International Version, was given to me by my parents after a Life Church conference in Auckland in 2017. It's essential for my faith and deepening my relationship with God in my Christian beliefs. It has accompanied me on mission trips, offering comfort and encouragement in daily life. It guides my values and understanding of God, strengthening my faith and teaching me about His characteristics. I also use it as a source of inspiration for design projects in my current church through bible verses.

Cross

The cross symbol's origin lies in Christianity, representing Jesus' sacrifice for our sins and his resurrection. As a Christian, my faith is rooted in this belief, influenced by my parents who are also Christians. The cross is a powerful symbol of love and salvation, frequently used in design to depict the free gift of life and a relationship with God.

AirPods

The AirPods, wireless earbuds by Apple, recently released the 2nd generation Pro series with improved sound and noise cancellation. I got them this year, upgrading from my 1st generation AirPod Pros. These earbuds are important for my music passion, aiding creativity in design and enhancing focus while reducing distractions.

Macbook

Apple's M1 MacBook, launched in November 2020, introduced Apple's Silicon Chip, enhancing overall performance. My parents gave it to me as a graduation gift, primarily for my design degree at university. This laptop is vital for my design work, serving as the main tool for creating designs, gathering information, and developing my creative skills through various tools and techniques.

Piano

The piano, invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori in the mid-1600s, produces sound when its keys are pressed. This Kawai instrument was purchased by my parents in 2016 when my brother was learning to play. I use it occasionally to play worship songs for relaxation and enjoyment. It holds significance because my mother used to play piano in church, and I aim to share my musical gift for worship. The piano's versatility in different settings and genres parallels my desire for my designs to adapt to diverse environments and be inclusive.

Wall Art

The wall art in my room features Bible verses and prayers, reflecting my Christian identity. Passed down by my family, these pieces remain relevant. They not only decorate my room but also serve as reminders of my intimate walk with God. Hanging them on my bedroom wall symbolizes my welcoming of God into my sleeping space, offering comfort and daily peace. Each wall art piece is creatively crafted, telling its unique story. I treasure school yearbooks as they hold memories of each passing year, showcasing achievements and photos from that time. Yearbooks feature diverse themes and unique styles, effectively narrating a story through visuals. I aim for my designs to similarly create a memorable and appreciated history.

Flight Tickets

Aviation holds a vital part in my life. Being an aviation enthusiast, I collect flight tickets from my travels around the world, including airlines like Turkish Airlines, Air New Zealand, and Singapore Airlines. I'm intrigued by the varied ticket designs reflecting each airline's branding, including colour schemes and content. This inspires me, as a creative, to maintain a consistent design system across various collaterals, even in the smallest details like an airline ticket.

FindGod Stickers

FindGod Clothing stickers are merchandise from an online Christian apparel shop, FindGod Clothing, dedicated to spreading the gospel of Jesus in New Zealand through clothing. I received these stickers with my clothing purchases, and I'm constantly inspired by their slogans and Bible verses. Each sticker employs a distinct color palette and typography to convey its message effectively. These stickers highlight the importance of sharing a message or raising awareness through a portable format while enhancing communication with unique designs.

FindGod Clothing

FindGod Clothing, launched in September 2022 by two young adults from the same church, was inspired by a vision from God to boldly express their faith. I've purchased several pieces from their online store over the past year and enjoy wearing them, spreading a message of love to those I encounter. These clothes are significant as they reflect my identity in Christ and encourage me to live out my faith without fear, inspiring me to consider creating my own Christian apparel brand in the future.

Pick Jesus Necklace

I frequently wear the "Pick Jesus" necklace, purchased from a friend at my church as part of his Cambodia Mission Trip fundraiser. Its design resembles a guitar pick with the humorous "Pick Jesus" text. The accompanying Bible verse offers encouragement to both me and those around me. I appreciate its simple, minimalist design, which aligns with my own design style.

Old Receipts

I've amassed a collection of old receipts from various stores I've visited. I'm captivated by the diverse typography and the layout of content on each receipt. These receipts serve as memory triggers for past purchases, ranging from inexpensive to costly. They also aid in expanding my understanding of composition and offer a glimpse into historical design trends.

Product Design Books

I have a collection of design books gifted by a family friend when I was about to start studying design at university. Although I wasn't sure about my design path, he gave me product design books. These books continue to inspire me with material choices, patterns, abstracts, and forms. They not only influence my graphic design work but also introduce product design principles into my projects, offering a new perspective and creative insights.

Birthday Cards

I have an archival box that I store items that holds dear to me. Inside includes hand written birthday cards that I have received from friends and families. These collections of Birthday Cards has emotional connections to it and it conveys the feelings in an artistic way and humours way.

Device Packaging

I'm a tech enthusiast and avidly collect packaging and boxes from the devices I've purchased. The diverse packaging designs from different companies, like Apple's clean simplicity or Oral B's busyness, fascinate me. I appreciate the various forms and sizes used to make products user-friendly and accessible. These packaging designs inspire me to think creatively and prioritize the user experience in my UI and UX design work.

Seashells

I'm an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys visiting the beach to collect unique and beautiful seashells. I'm captivated by the distinctive shapes and patterns of each shell. Many of these shells were gathered at Mairangi Bay Beach a few years ago. They serve as decorative elements, shaping the overall ambiance and aesthetic of my room. They also inspire my creativity by showcasing how natural elements can establish the atmosphere and style I'm aiming for.

Button Phone

The white Samsung button phone, released in 2012, features a tactile number pad and a small non-touch LCD display. I received it during a mission trip to Turkey, where personal smartphones weren't allowed. I appreciated the satisfying clicks and responses of the number and navigation buttons. Its compact form factor included essential tools. This object encourages me to reflect on and appreciate nostalgic designs of the past, inspiring me as a designer to create unique and different approaches to modern designs with a focus on tactile and intuitive user experiences.

Music Sheets

Music sheets accompanies the instrument and the musician to play a music piece. Music sheets are significant to me as it helps to learn and play Worship songs at church or at home during my own time. It's a supportive item to help what I needed to achieve. It helps me to get the tempo and rhythm correctly as the song intended to be. It helps me as a creative to have a systematic approach and finding tools to help and support me with my overall design idea.
