1. Your top reads of 2024

going to do top 5 or else i'll probably go out of control 😝 (these exclude chi no wadachi and rivers edge bc ive already talked about them)

⭐ ikoku nikki by tomoko yamashita (i love aunt-niece relationships, i love relationships that break conventionality - it always teeters between friendship and something else, i regularly think about how touching the last two chapters are & how difficult it is to build and maintain relationships but how much they give you year after year the more you put efforts into them, i especially love how non-linear it depicts grief and adolescence and even adulthood as)

⭐ love my life by ebine yamaji (there's so much you can say about this work, but one of the most erotic works ive ever read, something i personally find difficult to find, and i love how most of it is contained in the dialogue but slowly and gradually builds towards action)

⭐ onna no sono no hoshi (nothing much 2 say except i love the humor in this, i love how it can be silly but also touching in the most random of ways, i love how wym draws highschool girls <3)

⭐ daidai wa, hantoumei ni nidone suru (i don't have much 2 say about this either but i would def recommend going into this without knowing much about it, it's surreal meandering in a small town, the stories are episodic but also connected in some ways, i love how it captures melancholy and being an outcast by taking things to the absolute extreme, sometimes it's also really funny)

⭐ kemutai hanashi (such a full read, i reread chapters of this often because of how you can change interpretations of characters' actions after each chapter, and that's why i say it's so full, the characters know themselves so deeply that you cannot place the character in chapter 30 into the character of chapter 15 ... it really brings out the nerd in me because of how inventive the panels are and how beautifully the managaka renders the shadows)

6. Your favorite one-shot(s)

i don't think i read any one-shot this year but this ones really left a mark on me: sayo's self-made yukata it's so gentle (in the way it's drawn, told, in it's emotions and how it holds it's characters) really recommend this one :]

8. A recurring theme in the stories you've read

i think it would be non-conventional relationships in the sense that even if they're conventional (in how you label them), the way they play out in the stories really changes your perception about what they are (for eg: the power dynamics, who does what in the relationship, how one is affected in the relationship differently than usual, what around them changes the relationship in a way that can affect how they don't do what's usually done) (this can be for many different relationships; whether it's romantic or platonic or familial or entirely something else or something in between) most of these also explore multiple relationships between multiple people and there are many connections coming from here and there

some of 'em: yuria sensei no akai ito; double; karaoke iko/famiresu iko; these are manhwa but no home and welcome to room 305; sankaku mado no sotogawa wa yoru ; ashizuri suizokukan ; river's edge 🪄
