A Moonlight on Roseville Beach Art Show

It's Moonlight on Roseville Beach digital release day! You can get the PDF and ePub over on Itch and DriveThruRPG, so I wanted to do a short tour of some of the pulp pieces art director Dai Shugars found and chose for the book.

On page 8 of the book, Dai does a half-page dedication to the often unknown pulp artists whose public domain work we repurposed, listing every known creator we could find, including four pieces from Robert McGinnis, which include the piece Dai adapted the character creation section.

The above spread includes pages from the final section of character creation (the strange events you and your housemates had that got you involved in supernatural mysteries), the map of Roseville Beach (adapted from open maps of Cherry Grove, NY), Maxwell Lander's ready-to-run mystery "The House in the Woods," and the title page for section 1.

The full book adds two new character options to the ones from the Quickstart (free on Itch and DriveThru): the Familiar (an intelligent animal who works with the housemates) and the inter-dimensional Stranger. If you pick up the digital edition from Itch, you can get the playtest doc for an upcoming character option, The Veteran.

The full game adds Guest Stars, ready-to-run characters for drop-in and occasional players in your home game. Guest Stars work with the housemates but have their own abilities and resources separate from them. I wrote one as a sample, but Alison Cyve, Ezakur, and Sharang Biswas added 20+ more mundane and supernatural visitors who've come out to spend some time on the island. Inspired by the background section of Troika!, Dai did incredible work selecting pieces that brought this section to life.

Moonlight on Roseville Beach also comes with several ready-to-run mysteries and mystery starters from Maxwell Lander, Cat Ramen, Anne Toole, and Sean F. Smith (not counting the mystery starters by Noora Rose). Dai designed each to look like a small pulp novel itself. You saw Maxwell's "The House in the Woods" above, but also look at the work Dai did on Cat Ramen's "Girls Before Swine."

Charlie brought some of her candy too you, you both enjoyed sweets sometimes y’all would go on a swweting trip, aka you consume a shit tone of sugar. You tried to get Alastor to eat some with you but he refused the only thing that was worth eating to him in dark coco with espresso, yep that’s it.

But one time OHHHH you were so close to get him eating a sour hard candy. “Please my dear!.” You leaned on Alastor. He hated when you used ‘dear’ on him. It was a no escape on what you needed/wanted him to do. “Darling I have to keep my smile, don’t need to ruin it.” He smiled thinking that would make you stop. You smiled mischievously knowing that would come up. “Alastor this doesn’t mess up your teeth see.” You grinned almost as wide as him.

He took the green sour ball out of your hands. You smiled knowing that you possibly won until Niffty came along and swept it out of his hands. “MINE!” Yells Niffty putting it in her mouth, and makeing a sour face. “Oops looks like I can’t doll.” He leaned down to you smiling.

Next day you had a soada, Alastor did like fizy drinks like champagne and fancy bubble water but one again that’s it, no wonder he is a fucking stick. “Here al!” You say a champagne glass with your sprite. “What’s this?” He said. “What can’t do somthing nice for my love, my poet, my charmer!” You gasp. He deadpanned to you. “It’s sparkling water Charlie had some in her stash.” You say sitting crossing your arm. He took a sip as a record scratch played. “YES! I FUCKING DID IT!” You say raising your arm. You turn around seeing Alastor drink the whole thing. “This ain’t bad I don’t do well but this has a kick.” He said. No shit it’s from hell Donald’s.

A/N: so there ye go love! Now I know this ain’t the best because I have a sweet tooth and never met anyone who hated sweets, especially when you come from a family that makes ALOT of pastries and sweets. Anyways hoped y’all love it.

DANCE MARATHON EPISODE-PART 3

So I had seen this Charity Dance Marathon gimmick on an episode of the Golden Girls (an episode which aired in 1987) and I feel as if I’ve seen it on other shows as well. (fun fact I just learned this week: Gilmore Girls and Golden Girls both shared at least one writer). Were these ever real things or is this just a gimmick made up for sitcoms? Are there real people out there shaking their moneymakers til they drop? Who can actually dance for 24 hours with only minimal breaks? It seems incredibly uncomfortable. See also: Charity bachelor auctions (Seen this gimmick on The Golden Girls again, and The Simpsons). Stars Hollow could never auction off a date with a hunky bachelor because Miss Patty keeps all the eligible single men and teenage boys chained up in her basement. I may have to do some research on these phenomenons.

I already can't stop saying Shug and Shuggy and Shugar at random intervals after seeing Land of Bad yesterday, and Babette is not helping, lol. Maybe on a different timeline, she was Shug's Momma (actually...maybe I shouldn't wish that for dear Babette).

I just want to point out the sign in the background reading: "All students riding a school bus home after school must wait in the gym." Who is so far away they're taking a bus to school in Stars Hollow? Stars Hollow is like four feet long. Maybe there are so few teenagers in The Hollow they have to consolidate with other districts and bus in students from other towns, like seat fillers. Those poor kids, deprived of an education like that.

Everything reminds me of Captain John "Sugar/Shug" Sweet. Sookie informs Lorelai that under duress, she reluctantly agreed to her husband's "four in four" plan (four kids in four years, what is she, a dog?) and now she can't back out or have a conversation with him about it so she has no choice but to lay down and accept his sperm, lest she cause any conflict in their newlywed marriage where things are still bright and shiny and they enjoy sniffing each other in the morning, or something like that.

Tell that to Liz Danes.

That's rich and creamy coming from Ms. "I Almost Married Max Medina Without Discussing Where We Were Going to Live".

This is a janky medical operation we've got going on here. Medical examinations being performed next to open containers of food, no gloves being worn by medical personel or kitchen staff, and massage therapists walking around wearing tshirts saying "Masseuse" on them, because it's important to establish who you're getting massaged by. If it doesn't say Masseuse on the shirt, you might end up getting a rubdown from an unsanctioned random weirdo.

Alexis's is sneering like, "I'm here working 14 hours day in the Los Angeles heat in a heavy coat with a bunch of DORKS when I could be home boinking MY NEW BOYFRIEND MILIO VENTIMIGLIA and touching his BIG WANG! But maybe we can sneak in a quickie behind craft services later"

Mrs Kim is the real star of this episode.

Pretty rich and creamy coming from you, Miss No Car, No Job, No Pet, One Friend, Butthead Boyfriend, Goes Home From College Every Weekend to Visit Mommy. Kirk has a thousand careers, he will eventually have a pet and a girlfriend, and what reason would you need a car in The Hollow? Except to escape it. Kirk easily has the most interesting life in The Hollow, save for Miss Patty, maybe (who has the most interesting past). He seems pretty content with his life. I love that there's a "security" guard back there. I guess he was sleeping on the job when Shane's cries of agony rang out into the cold Connecticut sky.

Says Miss Lonely Pathetic Existence Also Attending The Same Marathon With Lonely Pathetic Mother And Every Other Lonely Pathetic citizen of the entire town.

If Lane doesn't stop causing so much friction in Hep Alien, she might be replaced with this guy. I'm sure he will get paid equally as much drumming for a group of teenagers as he's currently getting paid to drum for a small town twerk-till-you-drop charity event.

Remember when swing music had a brief resurgence in the late 90s? Those were the days, oh some days they were. But since time stands still in The Hollow, they're actually still on the 1930's wave. This is too much fun and so cute and whimsical and joyous and what a wonderful episode it is. Can't even snark too hard about the dancing. Lowering snark cannons.

They're going to go home and have unbelievable amounts of sex.

You know who else is going to go home after the DM and have an unbelievable amount of sex? I'm sorry. You came to The Thing, Dean! You did the bare minimum! You paid your girlfriend and her mother an uninspired compliment! For that Lorelai will stare at you like a hungry dog salivating over the last scrap of meat on a bone.

Shugar Shock (Satosugu)

He curled his fingers, still buried in Satoru’s mob of hair and tugged his head to the side, forcing him to bare his neck once more.

“Ahh!” Satoru’s eyes fluttered shut, mouth falling slack.

And God, he was beautiful.

Incredibly blue eyes, lidded and heavily curtained by strands of white hair. Thick lashes sticky from tears, fluttering beautifully as Satoru tried to keep his eyes open. His pale skin was now flushed and heated, pink speckled all over his face, running down his neck, bleeding over into an angry red where Suguru had bitten and sucked into him.

“Beautiful”, he breathed out, because suddenly the sheer beauty of Satoru Gojo was too much for him to keep in.

Satoru’s eyes fluttered open at that. Barely so.His lips quirked into a faint smile (fond, fond), eyes still heavily lidded as he rubbed his nose over the irritated skin of Suguru’s inner forearm, pressing his warm lips where he’d bitten down on him only moments before.

“You’re not so bad yourself”, he mouths against the faint bite mark, before placing the softest kiss upon it.

“Always the charmer”, Suguru said, smirk on his lips, watching in awe as Satoru’s pink tongue darted out to place tiny kitten licks to his skin.

Pink lips, moist and soft against Suguru’s skin. The scorching heat of Satoru’s tongue setting his nerves alight. Suguru was amazed. He was in awe of the picture that was Satoru Gojo, of the warmth that bloomed inside his own chest, buzzing through his belly and travelling deeper.

“Satoru.” His voice had barely any sound to it. The name simply slipped from his lips, without him having any control of it.

And Satoru peeked his eyes open at him, a faint shimmer of blue flashing beneath heavy, heavy lashes. His lips never left him, mouthing against Suguru’s skin, leaving a trace of slick, electrifying heat. Almost like Satoru wasn’t acting on purpose, like he wasn’t putting any thought into his movements. Like it was simply the most natural thing for him to do.

But now, Suguru didn’t know what to say. Because what was there to say? How was he supposed to put into words what he was feeling at the sheer sight of his best friend, of the beautiful, ethereal boy inside his lap, his droopy eyes, his pink lips (beautiful, beautiful), the way Suguru’s inside burned alight from the thought that Satoru was his? His.

Because this Satoru, this state he was in, was for Suguru alone.

Let's take a little sneak peek inside Inevitable...

Firstly, lets take a moment to appreciate the layout and design. This spread of "Eighteen Facts of the Barren" is a combination of the talents of four artists working together. The border art by KlurArts, the wizards gun by Galen Pajeau, the layout by Dai Shugars and of course the words by Zachary Cox.

Inevitable begins with a short setting primer, bullet points detailing the tone, characters and various factions or locations. Creating a world that players can easily fall back on or build upon, without feeling tied to a long official lore document.

not surprisingly, I forgot - I’m in the election room (I’m the secretary) thinking so hard my brain could explode. yeah I should pay attention but it hasn’t started yet and I can’t leave this post without finishing it or I’ll have anxiety all day - it was Zucchero bruciato (burnt shugar) by Avni Doshi but I didn’t like it much, I think it wasn’t the right time for us (the book and I), I’ll get back to it in the future for sure

Writing and Rewriting Bracknell Horror

So here's a terrible secret: in 2019, hot on the heels of the original Moonlight on Roseville Beach zine, I put some notes for a little adventure called "The Bracknell Horror." I had no illusions that it was a great investigation scenario. Still, it showed off a few things about Roseville Beach, including places and people in the town as well as the queer people who lived/visited there. It went to a location inside the setting without requiring deep lore, added some jokey Easter Egg references to Lovecraft's The Whisperer in Darkness, and included some comically easy to use alien tech.

The problem was, I didn't really like it.

People at con sessions had fun, but there was nothing particularly special or interesting about the scenario itself, and any scenario would have been great in its place. Also, while I like to say Roseville Beach is a game of "horror comedy," there wasn't much actual horror here other than some Lovecraft references. That's also true of my other Roseville Beach scenario "The Haunting of Flora Bly," though the book has four more scenarios that are richer in horror potential.

But this summer, just before running it at A Weekend with Good Friends, I rewrote it. I talked about some of those rewrites on my blog just after the first run-through, but more have come up as I've continued to playtest this.

First, while the initial scenario centered around a wealthy occultist-adventurer named Simon Mathers, the revision has greatly warped him from that initial vision. In the early drafts, he was an occultist willing to give Dreamlands entities the bodies of Roseville Beach residents in return for access to the Dreamlands. In the new one, he's returning to our reality after 20+ years in the Dreamlands, hoping to find a body for himself (the temporary one he constructed is collapsing) and his two Dreamlands familiars.

In the original, the cult-like group of followers worked for Mathers and planned to keep doing so. In the new, none of them like each other, and each of them have their own reasons for working with him (and one might even try to kill him).

Third, I let some of my OSR influences show. Beyond making each of the named NPCs a faction of one, I've also added some NPC rivals (all of whom might end up becoming collaborators) who also all have their own motivations and agendas for finding out what Mathers' cult is up to.

Finally, while the original notes told GMs to pull from the PCs troubles and connections to determine who Mathers' cultists have captured, the new one includes a chance to target the PCs themselves, giving at least some of them a chance to sneak in and explore the Bracknell while the cult is setting up the ritual, adds some specific NPCs the cult targets, asking instead how the PCs and their contacts/troubles connect them with those people, giving their troubles and connections a motivation to insist on coming along whether they'll be helpful or not.

Dai Shugars, Roseville Beach's art director and visual designer, has put together some incredible maps that allowed me to spend less wordcount describing the space and more giving info on NPCs, creating news stories and book snippets that can serve as physical clues, and creating a better sense of how the Doom Clock progresses.

The text will come to Itch for slowfunding next Tuesday, and the final zine will include the adventure, pregens, new strange events that tie to this mystery, and the basic rules of play, so you can try it out even if you don't already own Moonlight on Roseville Beach. Think of it like a horror-comedy investigation version of a Fighting Fantasy Game Book, but maybe gayer.

Living in a cannibal town was probably the best decision of your life! Clean and friendly definitely an upgrade from the rest of the pentagram, AND on top of that you were best friends with the overlord that owned the place, roise. A delightful…young…old? Lady. She was definitely a gossiper.

I sat sipping the rose tea rosie made for us for the picnic. Her presence was always welcomed and when I offered her a day off of the emporium she of course said yes. “Thanks for not bringing uhh.” I thought for a second, the only down part of living in a cannibal town was cannibalism, i did not eat people nor kill. I'm just pappi in the wind. (That's the white stuff on a dandelion you blow, JUst learned this.) I made bad decisions in life like blackmailing and definitely some suggestive intake of medication. I listened to all gossip in the pentagram from velvets biggest insecurity to the radio demon and vox having a past together, it is quite interesting, “Our food taste?'' Rosie said her smile never disappeared. “Yes, I love the angel food cake you made.” I say. “No problem my dear, so tell me any news on stuff?” she smiled while taking a sip of her tea. Man she was pretty, I loved the way she always dressed so elegantly. She wore no hat today but she did wear a new dress, a simple sun one. “Well.” I thought. “Alastors back and with the princess.” She was shocked. “I thought he was an ace?” I paused. “No, NO like as in working with her.” I say putting my hands up. “I know darling just messing with ya.” she winked at me, i loved rosies playful nature. Reminded me of when I was alive. “Yep and they're running a hotel together to redeem sinners.” I laughed at this idea. It's the end of the line, hell is gonna be forever. “My dear, I wonder what Alastor is doing there because we both know he aint looking to redeem.” She laughed. “Yep, interesting.” I took a bite of the angel food cake she made. “Hey have you seen susan today she hasn't been well… herself by now she would have gotten in our way insulting you.” I covered my mouth while still chewing. I laughed. “Yeah she fucking hates me huh?” Just then I got the idea. “Do you think she's been eaten!” I got excited. Just then I found her and became mad that she was alive. “I AIN'T GOING NOWHERE YOU DAMN BITCH.” She flipped us [mainly me.]

First rosie fan fiction omg i adore her she is so lovely, like ahhh, and cannibal town is so pretty definitely a change in scenery. (Also the kids are so cute!)

Partial face reveal I guess...

The piercing shop had a walk-in day today as well so I took the opportunity to save a little cash and get the eyebrow douple pierced after therapy.

(I have been thinking about it for some time now. This wasn't impulsive.)

I took a shower, the little bit of blood was washed off but the marker is still there, lol. The piercer girl said it might bruise or swell, that's why the thing is so long it sticks out. Honestly, I kinda wanna get a black eye just for fun...

I actually ran into another fellow insane person in the piercing shop and they also got a new piercing. Then we went into another place, where there was carrot cake and I had a piece and thought it tasted like coconut and cinnamon cookies for some reason. And then we found a third fellow insane person and we went into yet another place, where we drank coffee and got to pet doggos. I saw this Alex Gray looking mf and make a comment about him looking like he plays in a band and he said he used to play drums, so I wasn't too far off. Then he said to look at the paintings on the window and I asked if he painted and he said 'yeah, spray paint'. And then I remember seeing him in the punk festival thing the first time. I still think his name is Alex Gray now, I mean he looks near the same? ? Anyways, me and the 3rd insane fellow go back to the cake place and have another piece and the other fellow went home. I had a hard time getting the cake down and felt pretty sick after, so much shugar, I got a headache from it and was starting to get moody about it. I talked a lot with people and felt sad that I had to ho home bc I'm lonely at home, but there is some kind of new group thing that I suppose I'll try attending so more people to talk to tomorrow. 3rd person went home and I went to buy food and then home too.

Now I'm super tired. And my head still aches a bit.

But it was a good day 👍.
