being a dai hater AND a dav hater is so hard because i just can't agree with half the times people say something in dav was done better in dai. dai is like the root of half its problems. likeeee i definitely get people saying dav romances are boring and lacking because they kind of are, but to say dai romances are better because you can see a kiss animation on demand is just not something i can sign off on. choosing between davrin and emmrich is one of the few things that made me want to play a new game, while choosing between bull and dorian makes me sigh and accept none of my inquisitors are going to be gay men
#tbh i think despite being a company known for its romances bioware kind of got outpaced as soon as they werent#the Only company doing romances#anyway. i never understood the attachment to the kiss animation i feel kind of embarrassed doing it#it isnt usually an option for me in origins because iirc zev and leliana dont have one?#dai DOES have some interesting romances. blackwall seems fun. but not fun enough for me to want to go straight woman mode for him#which is why mary exists. sometimes you need to ignore canon romance adn get weird with it#you cant even attempt to do this in dav because everyone is kind of fundamentally nice and boring

Solas Fan Banter
Hereās a compilation of the fan banter Iāve written over the years between Solas and other canon Dragon Age characters, posted for Dragon Age Day 2020. There are references to a canon divergent Solas/nb!Lavellan companion romance. Iāve regretfully not written any Iron Bull banter that Iām proud enough of to feature here, but if anyone has any suggestions for topics Iād be glad to hear them.
Featured characters: Solas, Cassandra, Varric, Sera, Blackwall, Vivienne, Dorian, Cole, Morrigan, Cullen, Leliana, Valta, Renn, and Arcane Advisor Merrill!
Solas & Cassandra
(after receiving the quest Agrarian Apostate)
Cassandra: And he was not even a mage. Shameful. Solas: Would have it been justified if he was? Cassandra: The Templars have sanction to punish apostates. It would not have been beyond their authority. Solas: I would not call that justified, merely legal. Cassandra: The Templars should be better. Solas: The Chantry armed them and gave them an enemy. That might fuel an army, but will only serve to poison their minds against innocent people, apostates or no.
Solas & Varric
(after killing the Templars during the quest Agrarian Apostate)
Varric: I thought at least away from Kirkwall I could get away from crazy Templars. Solas: You believe they were mad? The men I saw were no different from those who confronted us in Val Royeaux.
(after delivering the ring)
Solas: She seems to be holding up well, considering. Varric: Yeah, but I know a front when I see one. Solas: You believe she was suffering more than she let on? Varric: Oh, I know it, Chuckles. That ring might comfort her when the country gets too quiet, but it wonāt dry her tears orā shit, do much else, really. Solas: Some wounds only time heal. Varric: And they always seem to leave ugly scars.
(after beginning Here Lies the Abyss)
Solas: You found Hawke after all. Varric: Oh, you know. All those heroics jogged my memory. Solas: Naturally. Varric: What, you going to lay into me, too? Solas: No, no. I understand why you hesitated. (if Hawke is a mage) Solas: To involve her in a Chantry organisation would not have been wise, at least before it had a chance to prove itself. (otherwise) Solas: Given her involvement in this war, I can only imagine there are those on both sides who would blame her for their present predicament. Varric: You mind telling all that to Cassandra? Solas: I would prefer not to.
(after Here Lies the Abyss, if Hawke is left behind)
Solas: I have read your book, you know. The Tale of the Champion. Varric: I donāt know if nowās the best time. Solas: I understand. I only wanted to say that in reading it, I felt your affection for Hawke in every word. I am... sorry, for what happened. Varric: Thanks, Chuckles. Solas: Of course.
(after Here Lies the Abyss, if Hawke survives)
Solas: You said your farewells to Hawke? Varric: Sure did. Sent letters home, debated sending letters to Weisshaupt. The Wardens will need to know the storm coming their way. Solas: You believe Hawke will pose a problem? Varric: Well, maybe not on purpose.
(in the Hissing Wastes, while exploring dwarven ruins)
Varric: Iām surprised youāre not hounding me about how all this makes me feel, Chuckles. Solas: I had thought we established your disinterest. Varric: Yeah, well. Iām thinking about it, anyway. Solas: If you insist. How does this make you feel, Varric? Varric: Thereās a tiny part of me thatās really satisfied, you know? Seeing a Paragon of all people living on the Surface, then the rest of me just doesnāt give a shit. Solas: Tradition is a difficult thing to shake, to be conflicted is expected. Do you think our discovery here ought to be shared with Orzammar? Varric: I donāt know about Orzammar, but I can think of a few Surface dwarves whoād be interested in this.
Solas & Sera
Solas: I could not help but notice what you were drawing at breakfast. Sera: What? I wasnāt drawing anything.
(if Sera is romanced)
Solas: You captured our Inquisitorās likeness well. Sera: Better than you could.
(otherwise)
Solas: There was no mistaking Dagnaās likeness. What were you carrying? Sera: A bowblade. Itās not a thing yet, but if anyone can make one, Widdle can.
Solas: Have you ever given thought to collaborating together on a piece? Sera: Collaber-what? Piece of what? Solas: A painting, or a drawing if you prefer, what medium you decide upon makes little difference to me. Sera: You really think the two of us could work together on anything? Solas: I was under the impression we had been. Sera: Thatās different. The Inquisitionās not an āusā thing, or it is, but not us us.
Sera: Say if I wanted to make something with you, whatād we even make? Solas: You ask the question as if there are limitations. Sera: A dragon, then! No, wait, a butt! (beat) Sera: Nothing? Not even a nose wrinkle? Solas: I am not unopposed to the idea. Sera: Ugh, how can you even make butts boring?
Sera: (handing him a drawing) Here, made you something. Solas: What is this? Are thoseāshoes? Sera: Thatās right. One for each toe. Youāre welcome.
(After Solas initiates a relationship with Ian)
Sera: So, you and Freckles, huh? Interesting. Solas: Your interest is not my concern. Sera: I always figured youād wind with someone whoād make the bumping bits matter. Yāknow, drop āem and rebuild the empire. Solas: It is not the physical product of our love that matters so much as how he makes me feel when Iām with him. Sera: Eugh.
(If Ian is in the party)
Ian: (laughingly) Vhenan, I would choose your words more carefully next time. Solas: Oh. (slightly embarrassed) I did not mean it like that. Sera: Ha! Iāve made him blush. Solas: This is why I didnāt wish to discuss it.
Solas & Blackwall
(While near Ferbās old fishing pier in the Exalted Plains)
Blackwall: Wonder if the fishingās good. If we had an hour or two⦠Solas: Do you consider yourself an angler, Blackwall? Blackwall: I wouldnāt go that far, but I do enjoy the sport of it. Solas: Iāve never considered it a sport. Blackwall: Probably because youāve never gone fishing just for the fun of it. Next time we make camp, Iāll show you.
Inquisitor: So, howād your fishing expedition go? Blackwall: You shouldāve seen the size of the gar I wrangled. Solas: It was not half as impressive as he believes. Blackwall: He only says that because allās he caught were minnows. Solas: (scoffs) Inquisitor: So... where is it? Blackwall: We threw it back, of course. Wasnāt like we were going to eat it. Solas: A convenient excuse.
(Along the Storm Coast)
Blackwall: Ever heard of the pale ship that appears on the mists? The Windy Marcher ā I think thatās what they called it. Solas: I cannot say I have. Blackwall: An old story, no idea where it started. Mustāve heard it a dozen times in the Free Marches, always a different ending. Solas: As is often the case with legends, the content and moral changes with the teller. Blackwall: One man claimed heād seen it himself, said the ship was captained by beautiful spirits whoād called him to the sea. Solas: A case of wishful thinking, I assume. Blackwall: He was a bit of a lonely bastard.
(After Revelations)
Solas: You and Cole seem more friendly, of late. Thom: He took some getting used to, but his heartās in the right place. Thereās enough darkness in the world without pushing away the good. Solas: I imagine it was chilling, knowing he could break your cover on a whim. Thom: That did keep me up some nights, yes. Sometimes I wonder why he didnāt say anything. Solas: Perhaps he saw in you what the Inquisitor sees. Thom: Well, Iām grateful. On both counts.
Solas & Vivienne
(After the events of Bring Me the Heart of Snow White)
Solas: I heard the news of Duke De Ghislainās death. As I understand it, the two of you were close. My condolences for your loss. (if the Inquisitor gave Vivienne a regular wyvernās heart) Vivienne: (coldly) There was a chance at saving him, but he is beyond saving, now. At least, by mortal hands. Solas: Then I am all the sorrier. (otherwise) Vivienne: He was at peace, and we had the chance to meet at least one last chance before he passed. Solas: Be thankful for that closure, it will bring you comfort in the days to come. Vivienne: It already has.
Solas: How do you feel about the moniker āMadame de Fer?ā Vivienne: Oh, I think itās darling. Why do you ask? Solas: Iron is cold, unyielding without the proper tools, some may use it as an insult rather than a mark of respect. Vivienne: Of that Iāve no doubt, but let them. I embraced it wholeheartedly, and from then on no one could ever truly use it against me. Solas: True enough, such a tactic has worked for others before.
Vivienne: You will be wearing shoes to the ball, wonāt you? Solas: My comfort is not worth jeopardizing the Inquisitionās image, so yes. Vivienne: Many elven servants in Orlais go barefoot, it would hardly be a scandal. Still, it would be beneficial. We must all present as a unit when the time comes, not a single hair out of place. Solas: That will hardly pose a problem for the two of us. Vivienne: (makes a sound almost like a laugh) Right you are.
Solas: There are rumours that your name be put forward as the next Divine. Vivienne: I wonder who might have started those. Solas: After all that has happened these past few months, you believe it possible they will accept a mage into their fold? (if the Inquisitor completed In Hushed Whispers / is a mage) Vivienne: Whyever not? Magic is what solved the problem, after all. Solas: Magic has solved countless problems over the centuries, and yet it is still reviled. Vivienne: I am not any ordinary mage. If any mage can achieve status of Divine, I am she. Solas: On that, we agree. (if the Inquisitor completed Champions of the Just and is a non-mage) Vivienne: With the Inquisitorās support there is nothing I cannot accomplish, my dear.
Vivienne: The Inquisitor gave you that hood not half a day ago and it already has a hole in it. Solas: Two, in fact. Vivienne: Are you afraid weāll forget youāre an elf if we go five minutes without seeing your ears? Solas: My estimation of your abilities is not that low, Enchanter, and I would be careful were I you. Two holes cut in a hood is not nearly as desperate as donning a pair of horns every morning.
(After Ian is made Tranquil during his personal quest)
Vivienne: I hope you know what you are doing, my dear. The Rite of Tranquility is not something easily undone. Solas: As I understand it, the Seekers did it quite regularly. Vivienne: And through a far gentler process. What they did to Ian was barbaric, but undoing it is not necessarily a kindness. One might even call it selfish. Solas: I never made any claim to selflessness. Vivienne: Go through with it, and he will relive what happened to him every morning and night for the rest of his life. Solas: (with restrained anger) Do not pretend as though you suddenly care for his well-being now, you showed little regard for him before. Vivienne: It is a warning, nothing more. Solas: Your warning is heeded, but it changes nothing. I am under no illusion this will be simple, but to give up on him nowā I would be no better than the Circle that once wanted this same fate for him.
Solas & Dorian
Dorian: That book you have on your desk, Solas⦠Solas: There are many. Which are you referring to? Dorian: Thereās one that looked to be in Ancient Tevene. Do you speak it, or are you just keeping it around to look clever? Solas: I would not go so far as to say I speak it, but I understand it well enough. Dorian: How did you go about learning it? Solas: Memories of Tevinterās empire litter the land, there is hardly a place in Thedas where the world does not remember it, and with memories come language. Dorian: So you learned through the Fade? Solas: I did, though my pronunciation leaves something to be desired. An unfortunate consequence of learning any language alone. Dorian: I might be able to help, but only if you give me the satisfaction of hearing you muddle through it out loud beforehand. Also, Iāll be next in line when youāve finished reading that book of yours. Solas: (snorts) Very well.
Solas & Cole
Cole: So theyāre nobody, but somebody. Empty shells, filled with someone elseās memory. Solas: For the most part, it seems. Cole: If theyāre heartless, why are they so angry? Solas: Perhaps it was not so much the absence of feeling, but the lack of recognition of said feelings. Cole: Belief makes them real, even if theyāll always be different.
Cole: It remembered. Delight in discovery, always pushing further into the unknownā someone like that does not simply disappear, and yet... it cannot remember his name. Solas: Names are not so as important as the spirit of the person they belong to. Cole: It remembered the person. Sadder, but stronger. If I ever return to the Fade, I would like to meet it. Solas: Nothing would delight it more. Cole: Oh, I know. I think weād be friends.
(After the banter where Solas helps prevent a panic attack)
Cole: You breathe inā one, two, three, fourā then outā one, two, three, fourā feel the grass beneath your feet, magic between your fingers, remember what is and what was. How long did it take you to learn? Solas: More time than is ideal. Cole: Iām sorry. Solas: There is some comfort in knowing Iāve learned enough to help others with such struggles. Cole: Iāll count with you, if you need. Solas: Thank you, Cole.
Solas: Iām curious how your efforts are coming along since we last spoke. Cole: Josephine misses how saffron tastes, but she hasnāt asked the chef to purchase any. I wrote it on a list when no one was watching. Cullen doesnāt like my letters. He says they donāt make sense. Solas: I cannot imagine he devoted much time to understanding them. Cole: No. Listening is... difficult, when youāve been taught not to.
Cole: Eyes fall shut, but they do not drift away. Their feet are tethered, tied to the ground. Solas: Even dwarves who lived and died on the Surface never dreamed. Cole: But they are still remembered. The song drowns out their thoughts, but it does not smother them. If I listen, I can hear. Solas: I have seen fewer glimpses of dwarven history than I would like, but there are always memories preserved by particular attentive spirits.Ā
(When passing through the kitchen, or lingering nearby. Solas stands over the stove and Cole sits on a nearby counter, hitting his leg against the wood.)
Solas: Would you like to try it, Cole? Cole: Would it not be a waste? I donāt need to eat. Solas: To overindulge, perhaps. A taste will do you nor the world any harm, a good meal is about more than survival. Cole: Then Iād like to try it, please.
Cole: You donāt have to eat, Solas. Solas: Strictly speaking, no. Cole: Sometimes you do anyway. Solas: When the urge takes me, or if refusing would be seen as ill-mannered.
Solas: If I could ask for your opinion, Cole. Cole: It remembers the garden. The sun bakes it red, colour working through it like a blush upon a maidenās cheeks. Solas: Excellent. And this? Cole: It was lost in weeds for weeks, neglected and forgotten. It tastes like oversteeped tea. Solas: I see. Then we will find another.
Cole: And it remembers the ocean? Solas: It knows the mountain streams and rocky coasts as well as any well-seasoned traveller, though the paths it takes are laid with smoother stones. Cole: Rough edges wicked away by river waters. Soft enough to stand on without any shoes. Solas: Though one must still take care not to fall. (optional) Inquisitor: Speaking from personal experience, Solas? Solas: I suppose one might say that. Cole: Feet forget the ground, flying out from beneath him, but the rest of him doesnāt follow. Solas: (tinged with embarrassment) As I said. Inquisitor: (chuckles) (otherwise) Cole: But you always get up again.
Solas & Cullen
Cullen: Iām curious how youāve avoided Templars all these years. Solas: I would prefer not to say. Cullen: Iām no longer a Templar, you know. Solas: Then why do you still wear their heraldry? Or am I mistaken? Cullen: I⦠Solas: Templar or no, your support for its cause endures. I would not endanger fellow apostates by revealing our methods.
Solas: Master Tethras tells me you served in Kirkwall. Cullen: Varric has no shortage of stories, that one just so happens to be true. Why do you bring it up? Solas: My travels have taken me there, on occasion. Cullen: I admit, Iām curious what your impression was. Solas: All the world is steeped in tragedy, but in Kirkwall the Fade overflows with it. Spells flow from the fingertips with such ease you may forget the Veil altogether. Cullen: That doesnāt surprise me, the amount of abominations I saw during my years there⦠Solas: They were but a symptom. Kirkwallās sickness ran deeper than what any one spirit could cure.
Solas & Leliana
Solas:Ā I have heard the Inquisition call you many titles. Sister, Nightingale, Spymaster. Leliana: I have worn many masks, some Iāve liked more than others. Why do you mention it? Solas: Which do I refer to you by? Leliana: (laughs) Whichever you prefer. You may use Leliana, if you wish. Solas: Then I shall see which suits you best.
Solas & Josephine
Josephine:Ā It took several tries, but we managed to remove the wine stain from your sweater. I apologise again for LadyĀ VĆ©rĆØneās indiscretion. Solas: The fault is hardly yours. It is a pity she is not more open to an apostateās perspective, but the loss is hers. Extend my sincere gratitude to whoever expunged the mark. I have only a few shirts to my name. Josephine: You know, Solas, now that the Inquisition finds itself in more favourable circumstances, we can afford to purchase you a new wardrobe. Solas: With respect, Ambassador, I value comfort over style. Iām uncertain the Summer Bazaar will be able to accommodate me. Josephine: It would be a most... unusual request, but I believe I know the tailor for the job.
Josephine: Have you found the library to your liking? Solas: I have. I cannot imagine any other circumstance where someone like me could have such unmitigated access to the written word. Most human libraries are not so liberal with their guests. Josephine: I confess, I have never been without books. Ever since I was a child they were always within reach. Solas: Then you must have recommendations. Josephine: One or two come to mind. If I can secure faithful translations, you will have them.
Solas & Morrigan
Solas: You seem well-versed in courtly manners for a woman raised in the wilderness. Morrigan: What are you implying? Solas: That you have a talent for winding nobles around your finger, or that the infamous āgameā is not so deadly as they like to believe. Vivienne: Or that more talented souls paved the wave for her. Solas: Another possibility. Morrigan: āTis true that Orlesians overestimate the challenge of this āGameā of theirs. Empress Celene had her desires, and ātwas a simple matter to keep her satisfied. Vivienne: Which is why youāre with us. Morrigan: With you at my side, I could not help but notice. Vivienne: Believe me, dear. Court enchanter is a trifle compared to where my sights have set.
Solas: I found your son atop the rotundaās scaffolding today. Morrigan: He has long been fond of climbing, and Skyholdās trees are too new to bear his weight. Solas: It was no harm. My only regret is I did not have an answer to every question he asked. He is a curious boy. Morrigan: (laughs) That he is.
(During What Pride Had Wrought, upon finding the mosaic of June)
Morrigan: Ah, clever June. The most elusive of the elven gods, insofar as legends are concerned. Solas: Their silence is deafening. Morrigan: I take it you have insight? Solas: Merely that he does not deserve what little credit he is given. Time has forgotten the name of whosoever built the first aravel.
Solas: Rumour spread that Kieran went missing. I trust your presence here means you have found him? Morrigan: I⦠yes. Solas: He is unharmed? Morrigan: Yes. Solas: Then I am glad. And⦠you? Morrigan: I have much to think upon, but my son is safe. Everything else can come after.
Solas & Renn
Solas: Tell me, Lieutenant, why did you remain with the Legion? Renn: Having trouble seeing why itās your business. Why dāyou ask? Solas: Escaping would be a simple matter of finding the right battle to slip away from. Freedom would only be a few dayās journey from where we stand. Renn: I couldnāt abandon my men... or my city. Solas: You show great loyalty to Orzammar, considering you will never see it again. Renn: Yeah, well. You never forget your home. Solas: No. I suppose you donāt.
Solas & Valta
Solas: āBut the truth is the truthā no matter how political it may be.ā Valta: Do you disagree? Solas: Just the opposite. The truth does not change with our ability to stomach it. I am glad a historian such as yourself agrees. Valta: A shame the rest of the Shaperate doesnāt agree with us. Solas: True, but if they had you would not be here, on the brink of uncovering secrets buried centuries ago. In their attempt to keep you out of the way, they unknowingly set you upon the path to even greater knowledge. Valta: Orzammar will know the truth. If I donāt make it, then the Inquisitorā Solas: You are not yet dead, Shaper Valta. Do not count yourself apart from the living so soon.
Solas & Merrill
Merrill: You snort when you laugh. Solas: Iām well-aware. If you are about to ask me to stop, Iām afraid Iāve tried before. Merrill: Oh, itās not a bad thing. It might be the most charming thing about you. Solas: Damned by faint praise. Merrill: It is a very charming laugh.
Solas: Why did you leave your clan? I read Varricās Tale of the Champion, but I suspect most of it was a lie. (if present) Varric: Hey! Iām right here. Solas: You did well to lie. To name her as a Dalish mage would be to paint a target upon her back. (otherwise) Merill: I left⦠Iā it wasnāt exactly my choice. There was a mirror, tainted by the Blight. I thought we should fix it, even if it meant turning to blood magic. My Keeper disagreed. Solas: You cleansed the Blight from an eluvian? That is remarkable. Merrill: I used to wonder if it was worth it. I sacrificed so much to get it working, years of my life, myā Iām just glad weāre getting use out of it, now.
Merrill: Youāre wrong about my people, Solas. The Dalish arenāt as lost as you think. Solas: They cast you to the streets of Kirkwall, exiled you for the crime of pursuing the duty they tasked you with. Merrill: Some of them said such awful things, they looked at me like I was already a demon, but⦠that doesnāt mean there isnāt good, too. Sometimes I wonder, had my Keeper not been so against me, if things might have been different. Merrill: I donāt know what they said to you, but I know what their scorn feels like. It hurts, but⦠thereās so much to admire. Solas: You still feel for them. Merrill: Theyāre my people, they always will be. No matter how much they might hate me, Iāll always love them. Solas: Put like that, I suppose I understand the sentiment. Merrill: Itās a lonely feeling, isnāt it? Solas: It never ebbs, no. Merrill: Then justā remember them, when you think unkind thoughts about the Dalish. The people you miss, the people you donāt, and what youād sacrifice for them both.
(in the Exalted Plains, outside the boundaries of Hawenās camp)
Merrill: (giggles) Datishan was asking about you before we left. Solas: Datishan⦠Hawenās little hunter? Merrill: Who else? She wanted to know when youād be back. Solas: What did you tell her? Merrill: I told her you needed time, that good stories donāt grow on trees. You will go back, wonāt you? Solas: It seems I shall have to, or else suffer the wrath of her arrows. Merrill: You joke, but she almost poked out my eye last night. Solas: (chuckles)

MERRY CHRISTMAS YALL!!!š„ŗšš. LOVE YOU ALL!! AND IF YOU DONT CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS, I HOPE YOU STILL HAVE A GOOD DAY( Ė Ā³Ė)šš.
Dragon age is at the bottom
šæššš ššš š¶šš
And I got the things I wanted and itās always fun to open gifts with the family. And I hope yāall have a good day or have had a good holiday for whatever you celebrate!! Love you all!! Have a good day!! May post more not sure. And I finally posted merry Christmas on all my blogsš. But yeah merry Christmas yāall if I havenāt said it all enough enwbdb.
To make this count as Dragon age, imagine The inquisition spreading gifts?? LIKE?? ITS SO SWEET?? Cassandra may have been complaining about her gloves recently hurting her hands and how her sword hilt is too rough and hurts her hands, and she may not complain about it much but the inquisitor still hears about it, and decides to take action. She makes the hilt more comfortable and not as rough/hard, AND gets her some nice gloves. Not too fluffy because she knows Cassandra probably wouldnāt like that, and sheās thankful and surprised somebody got a gift for herš.
Solas gets paints of colors that heās never had before. Itās like pastel, some mix of light colors, darker colors that he thought couldnāt get darker, and some colors seem to GLOW. Itās so sweet and Lavellan is shy when he says thank you, even if he does really mean it. Take it as solavellan or just friends!! Heās so happy someone got him something!! He isnāt used to it, so he didnāt get them anything and feels bad but the inquisitor says itās okay and imagine him getting them something when she points out that they like something?? LIKE?? SO SWEET!! And Cole may get some new weapons or a new book that heās been interested in!! OR A little notebook so he can write what heās feeling because Ik that man is going through some emotions :āā(. And to write how other people feel and all the good heās done!!
And Varric gets some awesome looking pens!! And a new notebook if he wants to make drafts/make ideas/or even sketch!! He loves it and heās like āš„ŗ thank you.ā Idk what Bull would get but Sera (I think thatās how you spell her name) would get a book full of pranks or some items that the inquisitor heard her mumbling about. OR a red Jenny (Iām not sure what it is I havenāt played her sorryš). Dorian gets a new jewel to wear and heās so happy because yes he can TOTALLY rock this. Or he gets a new staff that looks so blinged out or just very pretty!! OR gets a new book that he was curious about since I believe he really likes to read?? Maybe?? Not sure.
Idk what Vivienne would get. Maybe some ingredients sheās been needing that are very hard to get. Josephine would totally get a romance novel of some sort OR something from her home. Leliana would probably get a coat or piece of clothing of some sort that makes it harder for her to be spotted OR enough for her crew so itās harder for them to be spotted!! Or a new gadget of some sort that she likes :))). Blackwall gets some new carving things so he can carve to his hearts content!! And maybe a book of new carving ideas and how to do them properly. Ik heās pretty good at it BUT just in case he needs some help, heās got some :))).
Cullen gets a new sword OR A DOG!! NO ONE CAN LET ME THINK OTHERWISE THAT HE WOULDNT GET A DOGš¤. Ik he gets one in DAI trespasser, but I like to imagine he also got a small dog in DAI. Or maybe just a sword and some really shiny equipment for when he goes onto missions :))). Some equipment for his men because I like to think he loves it when his men (and women) are happy and get new equipment and he loves when theyāre fully prepared for anythingš.
I canāt think of anybody else and if I missed anybody then tell me because I want to know. I just have bad memory :((. BUT YEAH LOVE YOU ALL AND I LOVE THE IDEA OF CHRISTMAS IN DAIšš. And not much proofreading sorry-
#solavellan#dragon age#dragon age inquisition#dragon age: inquisition#solas x lavellan#hope yāall donāt mind me tagging this as dragon age#I added a small idea that should count hopefully-#I love everybody and I hope I got everybody :))). Theyāre all precious especially Cole and he deserves a lot of things. Iām just not sure#what he would get exactly.#my writing#I love them all so muCH GUYS!!

Dragon Age: Inquisition, day 1.
You know, I actually did start the game yesterday evening. I was making good progress in the Hinterlands and was just about to leave for a jaunt to Val Royeaux when a conversation with Varric revealed that I had the wrong worldstate loadedāAnders, alive? Bethany, alive? And what's this in the codex about Alistair marrying Bryce Couslandās daughter? *headdesk* Welp, thatās me starting over.
So, meet Avasis Adaar, dual-dagger rogue and, apparently, a good, sweet boy who wants to help. By sneaking into places and stabbing stuff. Heās good at that!
I went in with absolutely no idea what I wanted to do with this character; the Internet told me I should romance Dorian because cute, but other than that, Daiwen and Pavey were the real point of this run, Avasis is just along for the ride because I have to do somethingĀ with this timeline in DAI, right? So heās just going to have to reveal himself to me as I go.
What I got from last nightās session is that heās quite youngāmy first feeling was 18ish, but I revised that to 21ish to make the romance with 30-year-old Dorian more to my tasteāand that Varric is his new dad now. Congratulations, Varric. Iām sure you always wanted a son twice your height who could snap you in half with his neck. Put that in your next letter to Pavey, Iām sure sheāll have some interesting comments.
Huh, I completely missed the sequence with the fearlings chasing the Inquisitor towards Glowy Justinia in the Fade last time.
Is it just me, or is melee combat in this game absolutely horrible? Turns out theĀ āif you right-click on something out of range, weāll automatically walk you over to it and then do the interactionā function of DAO and DA2 was load-bearing, at least for me. Archer wasnāt really an option because there are already two of those in the party and I like Varric too much to deprive him of attention, but dear Maker do I miss my mage right now.
That said, I have now discovered the joys of using the F key rather than my extremely fiddly right mouse button for interacting with stuff, which is very nice indeed.
The Shokra-taar is the best armor available in the early game by 20 points or so. Also, Qunari are rather large. Ergo, Avasis will be spending his time at Haven pointing his nipples right into the eyes of the human and elven inhabitants. Enjoy, everyone.
āPointing being the appropriate term for it, as Haven is cold.
Solas is cutting quite a figure in the shibari bikini Antaam-saar, too.
Whatās this in the codex about Adaarās parents being Tal-Vashoth who left the Qun? Man, now Iām going to have a whole pile of second-generation feels. A very large pile of them.
Shut up, Roderick.
Whew, definitely got the right worldstate now. Threnn is talking about how Anora sent her to the Inquisition as a kindness to a supporter of her father, and I have the option to respond withĀ āLoghain is a Grey Warden now.ā (She referenced King Alistair last time, who exists in both timelines, hence me not catching on.)
Hello, Cullen. Hey, itās someone whose job Avasis properly understands, rather than chalking it up toĀ ādoes some magic and somewhere along the line that gets translated into a job for me to doā.
Wait, thatās an instrumental version of the Samson song playing over the cutscene of the Hinterlands being scouted.
I just saw Shokrakarās first letter. BRB, dying.
ThatĀ āHarding in Hightownā pun wasĀ pretty terrible, Varric.
Whee, the Hinterlands, fun fun fun.
I like Cullen and get ferociously protective of him for reasons Iāve gone into elsewhere, but all the same, unless thereās some supplementary material I missed, Iām not sure heās fully reckoned with his role and degree of responsibility for events in Kirkwall. You canāt just skip that part and go straight toĀ āIāll just quietly be a better person now,ā Cullen, itāll just keep haunting you. I would know. (Iāll be aiming a similar lecture at Blackwall, donāt you worry, but I havenāt met him yet.)
Weird to think that Cullen has the same VA as Awakening!Anders. I can hear the similarity, but only just.
For Avasisā part, he likes Cullen well enough, but he fell under Solasā influence early on and will be going pro-mage.
While his predecessor rocked that beige outfit, Avasis looks frankly ridiculous in it. Iāll have to pick out something better for him when I can.
The Golden Nug is a beautiful, beautiful thing. The early game is much easier when you can use those inherited schematics to make sure youāre facing it with midgame-quality gear.
Hello, Sera. You seem fun and potentially useful. But youāre going to have to wait your turn to be in the party, because no way in hell are you coming along to Vivienneās party.
Speaking of which, hello, Vivienne. You can handle the talking to fancy people stuff with Josephine, right?
Eeeee, got Iron Bull and Blackwallās recruitment quests. Doing them will have to wait for tomorrow, though.

Hello! Happy Friday from your secret admirer! I hope you're having a lovely day so far. I so enjoyed hearing about your music tastes yesterday and can't wait to do fun things with that information. ;) Today I was hoping you might be able to tell me about Cerine Tabris, Riallan Lavellan, and Revan'ilan Lavellan - as well as any other Dragon Age OCs of yours that you want to talk about. I'm all ears, tell me anything and everything about these precious children! xoxo - Your Secret Admirer
Oh my goodness!!!!! So much pterodactyl screeching in the break room today when I saw this ask! Where do I begin?
Well, waaaaaay back in 2009, I made my first DA OC. Her name was Elwen Cousland. She romanced Alistair, and accidentally looked so much like Leliana that I kept confusing their icons in battle. Sheās witty, but very responsible and duty-driven. I have no photos of her because this was long before I understood the concept of Screenshots.
I never did feel very connected to any of my Hawkes. I always played Default Marian Hawke, and felt much more like I was playing a pre-designed character than one of my making.Ā
Then came DAI and my dual wielding rogue Adriel, Addy to her friends.Ā

She was designed with Solas in mind, but was swept away by Cullen. Sheās kind and soft spoken, forgiving and shy. She had zero interest in being Inquisitor or playing the Grand Game. She disbanded the Inquisition without hesitation, and married Cullen. Out of all my Lavellans, sheās adjusted to the loss of her arm the best, with a simple, but sturdy prosthetic of Blackwallās making (he loves her, and she has no idea).Ā
Riallan came next and is the one I consider canon.
She romanced Solas, poor thing. Also, I low key headcanon that she and Adriel are cousins. She is aĀ āspeak softly and carry a big stickā kind of gal. Sheās observant but unafraid to speak her mind. She has a sharp tongue when she needs to, and though she seems bookish (she is) she also has a great sense of humor. She is bffs with Dorian, and thinks of Cole as her little brother. Though she is good at the Game, she does not enjoy playing it. She disbanded the Inquisition with the promise of redeeming Solas at any cost. Her arm has been replaced by an enchanted prosthetic created by Dorian and Dagna.Ā
Then came Revanāilan, my mouthy boy.
He is all snark, all sass. He is better at the Game than you and he knows it. He and Dorian pretend not to care about each other, but would actually die for one another. Heās best friends with Vivienne and Iron Bull, and loves Seraās pranks. He loves politics and found life in his clan dreadfully boring. He was the only of my Inquisitors to actually relish the mantle of Inquisitor. He has not adjusted well to losing his arm, despite the amazing carved prosthetic Blackwall made for him. Heās been pretty shut off since the arm was removed, and moved to Qarinus with Dorian to rehabilitate. Things are hard between them right now, but theyāll get better.Ā
Then I replayed Origins and made Cerine, my canon Warden.Ā
This girl has a chip on her shoulder the size of Ferelden. After her (dreaded) wedding was literally crashed, Cerine has a pretty big grudge against humans, and has a hard time trusting her human companions. Sheās angry, often frigid, and very very private. She and Zevran started as purely physical relief and entertainment. But the longer they traveled and the more often they shared a tent, the more she came to rely on him, not only in battle, but in the quiet moments too. They eventually get married and travel Thedas together while she tries to find a cure for the Calling.Ā
Aaaaaand, thatās about all I can muster. Iām not feeling very well tonight and might be developing a migraine :(. Itās time to take some meds and go to sleep. Thank you so much for asking about all my darlings. I love them so much, but donāt talk about them nearly enough.Ā

So... Sera being unpopular is sexist, but you admitted you don't like her either... so are you calling yourself a sexist then?
Alrighty I hope youāre sitting down because boy howdy do I have a rant for you!
Why I dislike Sera as a person, not a character
As a writer (like many on here) I have an interesting relationship when it comes to my feelings for a story, itās characters, and my own morality. That means, I am perfectly capable of being incredibly approving of, fascinated by, or even adore a character whoās morality is very different from my own.
This is very true for Sera.Ā As a character, Sera is a complex thought provoking creature.Ā
As an elf, one would expect her to have an understanding of why racism against elves is such a terrible thing, but she doesnāt. Instead of caring about elves and the struggles they face, she ignores and dismisses them as simply beingĀ ātoo elfyā. Which is a throw back to the people in our world today who are the ones effected by racism, but deny that it exists forĀ āpointsā with their oppressors/to avoid being oppressed/donāt want to admit how oppression affects them.
She of course brings to our attention racial stereotypes, (her conversation about how most elves canāt actually shoot a bow), but again doesnāt seem to realize that those stereotypes can be harmful to other elves. (Say, an elf who canāt shoot worth a damn is brought along and given a bow and told to fight. Despite their protests that they canāt shoot one, they are dismissed and as a result people get hurt and killed and the elf is blamed for not helping. Even though they made it clear that they could not shoot, the fact that the stereotype was so reinforced in everyone elseās mind, they ignored that fact and it would be their fault people were hurt. Not the fault of the elf who couldnāt shoot in the first place and tried to prevent this from happening.)Ā
This applies to when talking about the Dalish. Sera constantly refuses to understand them or their ways, or why city elves try to follow the old customs. Writing them off as simplyĀ āoldā and therefore not worth her time to learn or apply to her own life. She simply refuses to see how human oppression of elves truly affects elves and firmly believes that the only problem is the nobility and pride.
Even when supplied with firm proof that the elves have every reason to beĀ āelfyā- as shown with the scroll about Red Crossing and the temple of mythal- she is steadfast in her denial of elven culture.
This makes her fascinating. It makes her a commentary that we should look into and ponder over our own actions and thought processes regarding race and oppression. I love her as a character because we get to see this young girl, hurt by a parental figure be allowed to grow into a young woman who still feels the affects of that. We get to see this young woman who is not shamed for her past and allowed to make mistakes because of it.
As a person though? Sera is a willfully ignorant prideful little shit who doesnāt want to admit that things are more complex than what she wants to believe. Why? Because she doesnāt want to admit she was ever wrong. I can understand why she feels this way, having been raised by an abusive human, but I was also raised by abusive racist, sexist, ableist, homophobic assholes and I will always fight for the rights of the oppressed groups these things hurt. Because I know better about how my privileges and the parts of me people are trying to oppress. Sera never learns how to be a better person and understand her own race better.
This mindset is one in the world today that we are all watching destroy our freedoms. I dislike Sera as a person because she is the exact kind of close-minded person that allows racism and other oppression to roam free, and at times even contribute to it, that I try to fight against.Ā
Why Sera is Horrible LGBTA+ Representation
As I said on the confessions, Sera should not be considered good representation of a lesbian relationship. Why? Because sheās childish and manipulative and close minded.
That really should be enough, but let me go into explicit detail.
On the childishness of Sera, letās talk about her prank pulling. I will say this, her prank pulling and hatred of the extreme magical bullshit going on was refreshing. It was so nice to see a character who was just an every day person getting caught up in things far beyond the natural world. Even more nice to see a gut busting girl who didnāt care what others thought of her and was solely herself and enjoyed bringing stuffy folk down to a more human level. The problem with this however? It plays into her utter denial of the elven gods and culture and to things outside of theĀ ānormā- such as Cole. It plays into her prank pulling actually being cruel at times because of her lack of awareness for the suffering of others.
When she spoke to Cole, she referred to him as aĀ āthingā. She never considered the possibility that someone so different from herself deserves recognition as a person- and thatās a shitty fucking thing to do. Cole may not have started out human, but he tried so hard to be kind and to help others, she, as somebody who was not normal herself and had faced dehumanizing treatment, should have known better. After Cole had proven time and time again that he did not deserve the awful treatment, she never changed from that hateful dismissing stance about him. (not that I saw anyway)Ā
(Note; I also realize that Vivienne and Blackwall were not the nicest to Cole either, but I could write a ten page book on why Vivienne is a boss anyway because, at least, she avoided Cole and had some fucking class. Blackwall I just despise in general and I will always hate that creep)
When she pulled her pranks, she never considered the potential harm they could do. For example, making Cullenās desk wobble? Amusing, definitely, had Cullen been a normal man. But Cullen is a recovering drug addict and a survivor of some rather extreme trauma, itās obvious he suffers from severe PTSD. Iām positive that anyĀ ācontrollingā behavior he had towards his own personal desk space did stem from a need to control his surroundings after the terrible events he suffered. Her making the desk wobble could potentially cause a minor break for Cullen if it was a bad day for him. But she doesnāt take that into consideration, she only blows off Cullen asĀ ātoo uptightā without seeming to understand. Like, thereās plenty of pranks you can pull on somebody that wonāt have a negative effect on them. And what about the water bucket on Josie? Granted meeting with nobles is boring and annoying, but the Inquisition NEEDED their support. The Inquisition needed important allies so that they wouldnāt be attacked or turned against. She could have turned away potential allies just because she wanted to humiliate Josie. And Josie didnāt even deserve that! Josie (and Cullen!) worked so hard to keep the Inquisition from going under so that they could save the world. I didnāt see Sera consider these consequences and that bothers me to no end. Pranks are fun, but there is a time and place for the, and a way to do them. Sera didnāt do any of that. (She also put lizards in Solas bedroll- what if one bit him and it was poisonous? Would she have cared?)
And! She doesnāt take her relationship with the Inquisitor seriously at all at first! She writes off the Inquisitorās interest and says she only wants fun. Somebody whoās only looking for a fling and basically says they do not want to have a relationship with you is not somebody who is ready for a relationship. Especially since later she basically tells the Inquisitor that they do have a relationship and that the Inquisitor can either choose to keep Sera by saying her entire culture is a lie, or lose Sera. What a terrible thing to ask somebody to do.Ā
If someone who was barely a christian demanded that I give up my gods just because they didnāt believe in them, I would tell them to take a fucking hike off a cliff. A god you donāt even really believe is not more important than the gods I have devoted myself to. What you want and you believe should not matter more than what I want and believe. If you cannot respect my beliefs, then I have no respect for you and you clearly do not love me enough if you cannot respect my love for them. And, if you ask me to give up my gods for you, then what else will you ask of me? What else will I have to lose to satisfy you? This is the logic I apply to any and all relationships.
Again, while this makes for an interesting story and dynamic between the inquisitor and Sera- what does love mean between the two of them. In my rather hefty experience in the dating world, it sets up a platform for abuse and manipulation.
So letās review; Sera doesnāt consider the consequences of her actions in relation to the thoughts, feelings, and needs of those she says she loves. Is that somebody we really want representing lesbians? As a (genderfluid/demi) girl who wants a relationship with a woman, Sera is not someone I want people to look at and thinkĀ āoh, so thatās what women who like women are likeā.
Especially when compared to literally ANY of the other women available for a lesbian romance. Or are they simple not up for considering because theyāre bi in many cases? Are bi women who love women somehow less important to you? Think on that before you consider Sera as a good representation of a gay relationship please and thank you.
Character Critique VS Sexism
And now onto the main point you are so backwardly trying to be clever about.
When it comes right down to it, you can dislike a female character without it being sexist. For example, I dislike Sera, as a person, because, again, I find her childish, arrogant, and borderline abusive.
The reason such characters like Sera are generally unpopular does have a lot to do with sexism I will not deny that. And it has to do with having so few genuinely interesting female characters, that many will take whatever they can get. But not enough of them will. Many are still stuck in how wonderful and amazing the male characters are, that many females characters fall to the wayside. Sera is no exception. Because she is not an attractive male that they can ship with another attractive male, Sera is simply not going to have as many supporters as say, Dorian (whom I have an entire rant on why heās good gay representation, but also cliched). That means they are going to be more critical of her flaws and failings, without taking into account why she is such a good character because sexism in the offline reality is so critical of women in the first place.
Sweeping statements of Sera being annoyingĀ ālike all womenā or writing her off as only childish without understanding her own problems with accepting herself because of her foster motherās abuse, is sexist. I am capable of feeling sorry for Sera and wanting the best for her, while also understanding that she is not the only representation of all lesbians. Not everyone is capable of doing that yet. People, especially men, brain washed women, and younger folk, simply do not have the tools at their disposal (nor want them) to understand that Sera is simply one kind of woman and should be thought about more deeply.
And that doesnāt take into account how Sera is not a dynamic character. She just barely changes throughout the story line. She (along with others, and I have some major words to share with Bioware about the lack of character growth in their stories) remains the same childish, mildly manipulative, arrogant, brain washed racist and does learn any lessons from her time with the Inquisition. Her character, and her story line, I chalk up to male writers just, being honestly not very good writing female characters in general. She could have been an amazing character, a really amazing person, but all in all I feel she just falls flat on the things that truly matter to me as a person.
I could go on, but I would be repeating myself on this particular section.
So, TLDR; Your reach is not clever. If you had bothered to actually read my post you would have seen that I brought up legitimate points of criticism of Seraās character- such as her deep set racism born of self loathing and brain washing, her manipulative and childish behavior and her lack of change through the story line. Iām not impressed by your salty attempt to make me look bad because you donāt like what I had to say about Sera.

misconception: that solas doesn't form meaningful bonds during his time in the inquisition other than with a romanced inquisitor
send me metaĀ this is actually a different meme but shush | accepting
iāll be talking about this until the day i die, but solas makes plenty of meaningful relationships beyond not only the romanced inquisitor, but the inquisitor, period.
game mechanics overly emphasise the relationship between any canon companion and the play character, so i sort of understand where this misconception comes from. their arcs are decided, in part, by their relationship to the player and so it would be really invalidating if, say, you has negative solas approval but he still made it clear that he had accepted the reality of the world around him b/c of his friendship with the iron bull, for example. itās one of the ways the developers make sure their choices matter.
luckily, this is an rp blog, so i can say that an inquisitor can treat solas like absolute shit and heāll still make ties in the world and realise how fuckin wrong he was, as he well should.
iām on a tangent and i havenāt even rly started answering this yet, so here we go:
a befriended inquisitor is just as important to solas as a romanced inquisitor. just as important to his development, to his epiphanies, etc. much of the dialogue goes unchanged regardless of if a relationship is platonic or romantic. even if he doesnāt have romantic feelings for the inquisitor, he still feels the whole world change upon meeting them. he still compares them to the ancient wisdoms heās known in a pre-veil world. iāve seen jokes that say the lines have romantic overtones, but really i think solas is just the sort of person to form highly emotional friendships. falonādin and dirthamen are implied not to be brothers, butĀ ātwin souls,ā something that myself and other a-spec ppl have likened to queer platonic partners. while those two have undoubtedly sullied the term for anyone who opposes them, what iām trying to demonstrate is that solas comes from a society that doesnāt find close platonic friendships odd.
but like i said, this goes beyond the inquisitor.
the fandom vastly understates his relationship with cole most of all. often heās depicted as one of his fathers, which i can appreciate as a joke, but i feel like it undercuts how important that relationship isā for both of them.
cole goes to solas first when heās experiencing trouble after adamant, not the inquisitor. not even if theyāre a mage. b/c he knows he can trust solas to not use him. solas involves himself in coleās well-being potentially even if he loathes the inquisitor and everything they are, something he didnāt do for wisdomās sake, but is willing to for cole. and regardless of the option chosen, solas continues to support him and ask after him:
Solas: How do you feel, Cole? Are youā¦Cole: I am me. I cannot be bound, broken. I will help the hurt and kill the killers.Solas: I see. I⦠let me know if I can help.
solas offers affirmation and support for cole, talking him down from what seems to be a panic attack at one point:
Cole: Itās brighter here. Glittering. Glaring. Glinting. I canātā¦Solas: Itās a mild tremor in the Veil. Nothing to worry about. Focus on what is here, in this world.Cole: But⦠what is here?Solas: Feel the ground, the breath in your lungs, fabric rustling against your skin.Cole: (Breathes.) Thank you.Solas: Itās nothing. It can be overwhelming for anyone.
and when cole tries to fix whatās fundamentally broken in solas, solas doesnāt spurn him. this isnāt to say characters who do react with venom when cole oversteps bounds are wrong, cole being able to see in heads doesnāt mean he has the right to speak their pain aloud, but i think it demonstrates the patience solas has for cole being who he is. it has the potential to go down a path that solas doesnāt quite⦠get. assuming the trespasser lineĀ āhe didnāt want a body, but she asked him to comeā is referring to solas, solas is someone who desperately doesnāt want to have a physical body and is probably afraid of cole having the same regrets as he does.
their relationship also goes both ways. cole offers him support throughout the game, understanding solas in ways that others canāt. not necessarily through any fault of theirs, but being able to key into solasās emotions goes a long way.Ā and then you get to trespasser, where cole is the one person to speak fondly of solas and the only one to approve if you say you have to save him from the vidasala. imo if we go by game canon solas is closest to cole, even closer than a befriended or romanced inquisitor. since this is an rp blog, that obviously varies, but as it stands no one understands solas like cole and no one understands cole like solas. a cole who becomes more human is likely to become alien to him in some respects, but from canon banter itās clear that solas is willing to try. this was a very long winded way of saying solas loves cole.
beyond cole, itās hard to argue solas forms emotionally intimate relationships with others in the inquisition. that being said i also donāt think they have to be emotionally intimate to be meaningful.
itās, like, 100% canon that he hangs out with people outside of when we drag him places. blackwall has banter that implies they talk regularly, at least enough for blackwall to conclude that solasĀ āknows all there is to know about everythingā and even ignoring that they canonically play diamondback together. in banter they swap their experiences at war, although given theyāre both hiding something theyāre both being vague about it. still, solas clearly comes to regard him highly enough that heās mad about the revelations of blackwallās personal quest. a combination of solas having more in common with him than he hoped, and that for all solas has done wrongĀ ākilling civilians for fun and profitā wasnāt one of them. and solas seems to have come to respect him enough to apologise, backing out of his initial reaction to accept that thom had taken a step to becoming someone better.
josephine also references speaking to him, despite them never speaking on-screen which was a crime. she says āhe has the most fascinating storiesā and in ambient dialogue with her agents references occurrences where they seem to speak to nobility together. again, i wouldnāt say they had a deep bond, but i think they developed a rapport.
as for people i do think solas was genuinely friends with, thereās cassandra, varric, and iron bull. unlike the former two there isnāt really a reference to them hanging out outside of banter, but given their relationship i at least like to imagine they spend some time together.
varric and solas clearly spend time together before you meet them in-game, for one. long enough that varric thought of a nickname, though whetherĀ āchucklesā was decided on right there or earlier itās hard to say. the two have actually a pretty funny rapport going, varric being one of the people to bring out solasās sense of humour without much difficulty. and when theyāre not joking around, they have interesting conversations. iāve actually been wanting to rewrite the balcony scene with thora, my dwarf inquisitor, and solas to incorporate the fact that varricā who makes his living writingā doesnāt match his narrow view of what dwarves should be. itās just one way the game steers solas in such a way that he isnāt allowed to grow unless the inquisitor gives him permission to, similar to how his view of the qun will flip-flop depending on if heās talking to iron bull or a friendly qunari inquisitor, but i digress.
with varric, cassandra, and bull alike he demonstrates that heās more capable of changing his mind than people give him credit for, i think. he admits he might have been mistaken in his interpretation of the dream of a man living his days alone on an island.
cassandra and solasā relationship started out very hostile from the sound of it, but the hostility is worked out before the inquisitor wakes up, so much attention isnāt drawn to it. solas says he gave up his staff, and while i donāt think he was ever technically a prisoner, i also donāt think he wouldāve been allowed to up and leave after that point. he references that she threatened his life if he didnāt get results, and yet in banter heās complimentary towards her, most notably her ability to surrender the chance for power when she feels she is unfit for the role and that sheās capable of changing her mind. idk, i think their relationship demonstrates the best of both charactersā cassandraās ability to be less hard-line than she is around the likes of varricās, solasās ability to respect people with differences of opinions to him, both of their abilities to change their minds about the other.
heck, thereās even the option for some emotional intimacy. cassandra offers her condolences about wisdom, solas comforts her when her faith is shaken, providing hope when she realises her power did not come from the maker as she was taught. heās also at his misotheist finest in this conversation:
Solas: You seem troubled, Seeker. Still plagued by thoughts of your order?Cassandra: I⦠am reminded of what I was told following my vigil. They said my abilities were a gift from the Maker, a reward for my faith and dedication. But it was a trick, wasnāt it? A ritual no different that the Harrowing, simply magicā¦Solas: Do you know how rare spirits of faith are? How difficult it is to draw them to this world? You should be proud, having accomplished something so remarkable, not ashamed it was not what you thought.Cassandra: Thank you, Solas. That⦠does make me feel better.Solas: Your faith does you credit, Cassandra. I hope your Maker is worthy.
heās well-aware that cassandra is resolute and uncorrupt, capable of fixing what went wrong with the seekers (even if he is cynical about the inevitable degradation of any organisation). i really donāt know how you read their dialogue and think solas didnāt deeply connect with her in ways that shaped him regardless of his relationship with the inquisitor.
now iron bull is someone whose relationship with solas varies wildly depending on the inquisitorās choices, and another character whose choice is undercut by the realities of a choice-based narrative. if the chargers are sacrificed theyāre under no circumstances friendly, ableit solas seems to pity him in that case. otherwise, solas engages with bull in a way other characters donāt. but to be fair to them, i think solas understands better than any other party member what itās like to lose your culture and home to help the people you love. through their conversations before his pqā which often got very heated, possibly the angriest solas gets in banterā solas listened and learned and kind of sussed out what bullās fears were, what was keeping him in the qun. and like, i also think solas has a lot of experience knowing what ppl who are trying to pry themselves out of a toxic religion are also dealing with? what iām getting at is iron bull imo reminds solas of the elves who fought the evanuris, people who had doubts about the societies they were raised in and broke from it, but still carried the damage it did to them. and he takes steps to reassure bull thatĀ āmadnessā isnāt something he ought to fear, b/c he isnāt a mindless beast but an incredibly intelligent person, capable of playing chess without a board. something that takes considerable practise and was for centuries considered a miracle in our world. there are issues with how solas approaches it, his understanding of the qun is flawed and imperfect, but he literally offers himself as a means of support when bull expresses fear that heāllĀ āgo savageā:
Solas: You have the Inquisition, you have the Inquisitor⦠and you have me.
and after that i have a hard time imagining that they would never hang out more casually. solas would never be as close to bull as the chargers by any means, and you may not even consider them friends, but again their banter really reflects a significant relationship that would effect him without the inquisitorās input. assuming they save the chargers, anyway. personally, i consider them friends
i just hit 2000 words and iām starting to see why i let this sit in my drafts for like a year, so iāll try to wrap it up. there are other characters i think have an effect on solas despite their relationship having its ups and downs. sera, namely, someone he seems to respect and resent simultaneously, grudgingly admitting he envies her at one point. their relationship is one of the most frustrating in the game but also my favourite due to how similar they are when you get down to it, sera i think on some level reminds him of when he was young, hence why he tries to give her advice. in another world, given time, i think they couldāve been friends, albeit friends who sometimes drive one another up the wall. much of what they say in-game reflects itselfā solas talking about organisations degrading, in time, sera saying if you chop off the head of a government another will show up and muck up all the work you did to overthrow the first. theyāre both artists, elves who feel disconnected from others of their kind. we donāt get enough of their positive interactions for me to claim theyāre friends in-game w/ a straight face. rp wise, however, itās been one of my favourite things to write, as they navigate a strange not-hostile relationship. also i just adore sera as a character, i wish there wasnāt such a divide between solas and sera fans b/c they both parallel and contrast w/ one another really well.
for one final note i do want to talk about specifically my solas interpretation, the relationships i either hc heās built or heās built through roleplay. my solas had a part to play in the rebuilding of skyhold alongside freed circle mages, teaching them practical magic they were denied learning in the circle and becoming something of a role model (god help them) for the more radical mages. solas served with the inquisition for a year in canon, three years in my canon. once he works past the haze of how wrong the veiled world feels i canāt believe solas, who constantly tells the histories of peopleā real peopleā whose stories he felt were important enough to remember and retell, even seemingly insignificant ones about baking bread or seeing sunlight for the first time, would connect with precisely none of the people around him on a personal level. not when we see his ability to do just that in-game, even with people without a mark on their hand.
tl;dr give solas friends. remember your inquisitor is not the be-all and end-all of his life and that heās had 1000s of years to forge relationships with people who have just as much as an impact on him, and his time with the inquisition is no different. i donāt doubt all of us have hcs about how the companions have changed our inquisitorās life, for better or worse, so i canāt see why itād be any different for the companions. solas included
