Stef and Lena are having the kids pack lunches, they have two more mouths to feed, and they can suddenly afford to have Jesus' tattoo lazered off? At least ten sessions, seven weeks' healing time between...wow. It will take over a year to remove completely. I've always loved this dinner scene. lol Zinging Jesus. lol The parents say they know Brandon can goof off while on tour, but, Stef doesn't answer Mariana's question about why they said yes, even though he sold fake IDs at school. Totally unfair. Yeah, Jesus' bandage is gross. Stef's obsession with Mike is annoying. Stef is not happy with Robert. Her arm around Callie...'love yous' and kisses, aw. Sophia has a personality disorder, and she's at an inpatient center... Boo, Monte. Right, Ana wants Stef and Lena to adopt the baby. Callie calls Robert instead...here goes the kidnapping thing...

The Fosters (S04E17) Diamond in the Rough Airdate: March 21, 2017 @freeform Ratings: 0.686 Million :: 0.29 18-49 Demo Share Score: 7.75/10 @thefostersseries **********SPOILERS BELOW*********** This is 'The Fosters' I enjoy... A slower pacing gives way for each individual storyline and subplot to carry it's own shine... Allowing them plenty of room to breathe and grow or fluctuate, whatever it needs to do. It's hard to ever get a truly consistent season out of 'The Fosters', but I'm always compelled to watch and when episodes like this come around, it reminds me why I've made it 4 seasons deep into the show in the first place. It's even 8am and I've literally been writing all yesterday and all night into the morning... Usually by this time I grow a bit cynical, drift in and out, or even rage relentlessly hard on a show... But 'Diamond in the Rough' gave me exactly what I needed out of 'The Fosters' at 8am. There was a nice balance here... And ultimately that's one of the most important things that 'The Fosters' must get right as a series. Since we rarely get full fledged villains, tho they do show up when it's necessary from time to time so that it's not a show where the main protagonists are solely making one bad decision after another (coughSwitchedAtBirthcough), it's important to have some characters pull together or scramble up a WIN, while others spiral a bit or just live out the human condition and make bad calls or are straight assholes for no reason... I'm looking at you, Brandon (and you too, Callie). These are still kids and they are learning as they go. Empathy is something that's learned, even if some of us come by it easier than others. I think the majority of viewers would point towards Jesus' story arc as the most currently engrossing... His struggle has been played well by Noah Centineo, who continues to surprise me with his performances. There's a thin line that could easily cross into bad taste if Noah was to handle Jesus' struggle and rehabilitation in an off-putting manner, but he's been reserved at the right moments and keeping just the right beat to keep everything as believable as possible. I've been really impressed with his work. Seeing Mariana step in and hone in on his brother's insecurities and do what she can to match the little things that frustrate him the most, like wearing the glasses to school, is extremely one for the feels. It's nice to be reminded that they're twins and they really are sensitive to each other's vulnerabilities when it counts the most. Lena is dealing with what's shaping up as the show's current villain right now, Drew, who seems to be attempting to take over Anchor Beach. He latched on to Monty, who was way too trusting during Lena's leave of absence, and because of that Monty is paying the ultimate price. I'm not Monty's biggest fan, but seeing someone play her like that is a great reminder that when you are in an important position at a job, no matter what it is, there's always someone gunning for you. Simply put, you have to be careful who you trust. Now Drew is calling the shots at Anchor Beach and has turned down approval for Jesus, as big of an asshole move as that is... It gives way for Mariana to give Jesus another gift of empathy, by taking over his proposed project that was denied by Drew (because of Jesus' uncertainty in terms of his overall healing from the accident). The more moves Mariana makes like this, the more she returns to my good graces, and the mushier I become. Mariana is on a hot streak in the feels department and now the spotlight is back on the strong bond between her and her brother. Stef taking a new job in a special unit has also added to the show. It's really a perfect fit, the regular cop routine was getting old... And working with Intelligence in Vice, specifically in underage children, seems perfect for Stef and she can throw Callie Little side projects, since...you know...Callie has yet to be able to work on her own problems., only trying to stick her hand in everyone else's. Finally in 'Diamond in the Rough' someone calls Callie on that fact tho... And even better that it was AJ. Of course she's pushing him away, she's a constant human cyclone of a disaster and there comes a point where she really has no more excuses... The Foster System fucked Callie up, that's apparent and completely understandable... But she's had Stef & Lena & Rita, all these strong women in her life really go out of their way to make up for that... And let's not forget the lengths at which her birth father went and still goes for the girl too. No more excuses, Callie. Fix yourself before you attempt to fix everything else around you... If no one has ever slapped you in the face and told you that's exactly how it works, I know of 820,000 weekly live viewers (and countless streaming viewers) that would be happy to volunteer to be the one to do it.

"Words are weapons!" TIFF has dropped a trailer for a film premiering at the fest this fall in the Midnight category. Titled Bodied, from director Joseph Kahn, the film is about a white graduate student who gets deep into the battle rap world to write his thesis. He ends up discovering he has a competitive obsession with battle rap. This seems like it might be a perfect double feature with Patti Cake$ also from this year. Calum Worthy stars as Adam, with a cast including Anthony Michael Hall, Debra Wilson, Ryan Ochoa, Daffany McGaray Clark, Charlamagne tha God, Loaded Lux, Dizaster, Dumbfoundead, and Hollow Da Don.
