By the time I was 10 my mum had told me bits and pieces about what my period would be like. We then had our first round of sex education. It was primary school so really basic stuff just about what our bodies would be doing over the next few years. Periods were mentioned.

I was at my dad's that night so when he asked me what I had been doing at school I told him. When periods were brought up he told me I shouldn't talk about it because its disgusting and makes everyone uncomfortable. This really stuck with me.

A few years later when I started my period I was really ashamed. I remembered what my dad had told me and didn't tell anyone. Not even my mum. I didn't use proper sanitary products for at least 4 months, instead making makeshift pads out of toilet paper. It wasn't until my mum found some of my blood stained underwear in the wash that she realised. She brought me pads and taught me how to use them properly but those first few months were horrible and honestly quite scary.

My mum told me a few years later that she was quite upset that I hadn't told her as she thought it was because I didn't trust her. I explained to her what my Dad had said to me and she had a word with him. But the damage had been done. I still feel slightly ashamed when I get my period although I am slowly getting more comfortable with it.

It's horrible to feel ashamed of something so natural that you can't help. My periods weren't the only development that my Dad made me feel ashamed of. I'm still healing and trying to be comfortable in my body.

The words you say to young girls stick with them and if you tell them they are wrong or disgusting they will believe you. More men need to understand that periods aren't either of these things, especially Men with daughters.
