notes: this was originally gonna be a part in a fanfic I was cooking but i genuinely could not figure out how to write childhood friends with Dabi’s crisped ass.

summary: Touya always sees kissing in movies, all dramatic and lovey dovey, is it really his fault that he wants to try it on you? just to see how it feels of course!

currently, you were at the treacherous Todoroki household.

Why? You may be asking.

Because you wanted to watch a movie, 27 dresses specifically.

Unfortunately for Touya Todoroki, he’s your only friend to watch the movie with.

now the two of you have been friends since pre-school, kids bullied you- Touya saved you.

you stuck around him after that, much to his dismay.

“Why would you make me watch this garbage.” Touya says harshly.

You huff loudly, “to see if your cold, dark heart had anything in it.”

Touya giggles at your little comment, you liked his laugh.

you wanted to watch this movie for a week, practically begged Touya on your knees for him to even watch it with you.

Touya doesn’t enjoy cheesy rom-coms.

He’s made that quite clear throughout this whole movie.

when the two main characters tried on the dresses he complained.

when they went to the bar together, he complained.

when the characters sang at the bar, he complained then too.

yet when they kissed, Touya didn’t even open his mouth.

“yuck- want me to skip?” You say for Touya’s sake.

He’s quiet for a moment before speaking, “nah, it’s just a kiss.”

“What- you’re suddenly cool with lovey dovey stuff now?” your face is set perplexed.

Touya shrugs, “I see it in TV all the time, why should I care?”

You hum softly, “adults kiss too much.”

Touya hums in agreement, his foot starting to steadily tap.

the movie continues, you catch Touya scoff at one of the movies jokes, he seems to be…actually interested.

but that damn tapping won’t stop.

Doesn’t his leg get tired when he does that?

Finally, at the end of the movie the two main lead get married, and the main actress has her 27 bridesmaids.

cute movie.

“Did you like it Touy?” you ask with excitement bubbling inside your chest.

He responds bluntly, “No- terrible movie.”

“Liar- that was the most I’ve ever seen you pay attention to something!” You point an accusing finger towards him.

Touya swatted your finger away, “I was waiting for the guy to murder the girl.”

“What?!” You retract your finger quickly.

Touya shakes his head as if it were obvious, “He had serial killer vibes..”

You sit there on the couch utterly silent from the words that just came out of Touya’s mouth.

His brows furrow slightly, “What?”

“Nothing, weirdo..”

Touya melts into the couch, picking up the remote and scrolling through the streaming apps choices.

“Any thing else you’d like to watch?”

“Being a gentleman I see?” You hum.

Touya chuckles softly, never responding.

The room is on a comfortable silence for the moment, aside from Touya tapping his foot against the glass table his feet are propped on.

Touya’s foot staggers, “Why do you think adults kiss?”

“Because they like it.” You answer quickly.

Touya shakes his head softly, “yeah but why, why do they like it?”

“Why would I know the answer to that.”

Touya glares at your for a moment, “oh please- your parents basically make out all the time when I’m over.”

“So that means I should know why they like it?” You pick at the fur blanket that was thrown over you prior to starting the movie.

Touya hums a small, “yep” before his foot starts to tap again.

“Didn’t think you were so affected by the kissing scene…” you say under your breath, Touya heard anyway.

“I-I wasn’t affected, I’m just curious on what’s so good about it.” He says quickly, the tapping increasing.

You seriously doubt Touya’s even looking at the tittles on the screen by how fast he’s tapping the remote button.

“Well I wouldn’t know…”

Touya stays quiet for a moment, thinking.

probably about something stupid.

“We could know.”

yep, something stupid.

“What you implying Touya?” You elbow his ribs, making him yelp.

“Ow- I’m saying that…nevermind.” Touya rubs his ribs softly, dropping the remote next to you.

“I mean…you’re just curious right?”

Touya looks up at you, the tapping gets faster.

“Yeah- Why…?”

You pick up the remote, looking it over to act like your doing anything else other that what your about to do.

“We could- do it..” you say quiet and soft.

Touya doesn’t respond, the tapping stopped at least.

suddenly, Touya grabs the remote from your hand- setting it aside.

“We could.”

Great, now you’re forced to look at your best friend.

“Yeah?” You say barely loud enough for Touya to pick up.

Touya nods, his foot starting to steadily tap again.

You cup Touya’s face with your hands- oh gosh are you really doing this?

Touya places his hands on your lap, truthfully he has no clue where to put them.

the taps get faster.

You and Touya look at each-other for a moment, just to make sure you don’t absolutely ruin your friendship.

More like a “you really wanna do this?” stare.

but hey, you were curious.

so was Touya.

1 + 1 = 2.

Two kissing more specifically.

“Jus’ do it already..” Touya says quietly, his face growing red.

You press your lips to Touya’s, it was..nice? soft? kinda gross.

Touya’s lips were quite soft actually, he’d wear chap stick like he’d wear clothes though- he hated dry lips.

Touya’s hand steadily went to your cheeks as well, only difference was his were a lot warmer.

At some point, Touya’s tapping stopped.

you a Touya didn’t though, it’s normal for friends to experience things together- how is a kiss any different?

Your cheeks felt so warm.

wait no- that’s Touya’s quirk.

You starting patting Touya’s thigh as a signal to chill out.

And he got the memo, only after a minute.

You and Touya were only slightly out of breath- you might have 1st degree burns on your cheeks though.

“M’sorry…?” Touya says with his dumb cracky voice.

“you burned my cheeks.” You say curtly.

Touya groans, “I didn’t know I activated my quirk!”

“I’m never kissing you again.” Your tone gets slightly aggressive.

Touy burned your precious face though- so he deserves it.

“I said I didn’t-“

A sudden laughter breaks through Touya’s speak, one that didn’t belong to him.

You whip your head to the door way only to see Touya’s siblings, Natsuo and Fuyumi.

Natsuo is holding onto his stomach, dying with laughter while Fuyumi looks mildly disappointed- more like embarrassed.

“Touya-nii…” Fuyumi says softly.

Touya’s face goes completely red, even reaching his ears.

“You didn’t see a thing.” Touya says sternly.

Natsuo laughs more as he grabs Fuyumi, “dude we saw everything!”

Fuyumi covers her face and Natsuo starts to re-create the scene.

“Oh-la-la! Y/N please kiss me I’m so desperate!” Natsuo says through his giggles.

You can see steam coming from Touya as he jumps over the couch to get to Natsuo.

Natsuo sees this and starts to book it.

So now you have a wild Touya and a trouble making Natsuo in the house.

Fuyumi looks at you, then runs to her room- poor girl doesn’t even wanna face you.

how are family dinners your invited to supposed to go now?

“Mrs. Rei, this is absolutely delicious!” You say while crunching down on whatever Touya’s mother made for the night.

Touya hums in agreement, basically halfway through his second plate.

Natsuo chuckles before speaking, “maybe you should ask her for some cooking lessons Y/N- mom’s experienced.”

Rei smiles softly, “thank you, Natsuo.”

Natsuo immediately gains the most devious smile you’ve ever seen in your entire life.

“Maybe some kissing lessons as well, since you and Touya like that too.”

Immediately silence hits the table.

Touya immediately slams his blow onto the table.

Natsuo runs for his life down the hallway as Touya almost jumps over the table to catch him.

As soon as the boys leave the room your met with a stone faced Rei.

you clear your throat.

“Fuyumi can vouch for me, me and Touya would never do something so sinful!”

Rei chuckles softly, “Fuyumi told me when I came home…”

You whip your head to Fuyumi as she takes her leave, doesn’t wanna face your wrath.

Ideal Valentines Day - Omega! Aizawa, Mic, Toshinori, Dabi

A/N: For the anon who asked <3 I wasn't vibing with Shiggy today, so I left him off. I feel like these all ended up being home dates, but I think being a hero or villain makes those easier lol. There are hints of n-sfw, but it's non-descriptive and very tame.

Aizawa

Actions speak louder than words for Aizawa, and I think his preferred love language for receiving affection is Acts of Service.

He has no need for material items, and that goes doubly for anything covered in hearts. I don't think he's a massive fan of chocolate. And flowers are just another thing that he has to sort out and try to keep alive as long as he can. No, he much prefers practical care on Valentine's day.

He wants you to pick him up from UA after work so he doesn't have to drive, a warm cup of his favourite coffee, far sweeter than his image would suggest, ready for him.

He wants to go straight home of course. When he walks through the door, he would love to see the house sparkling clean and tidy. It lifts a burden off him that he didn't even know was there.

There's no fancy outfits with him. He wants to immediately get changed into the comfiest clothes he has, and he would love if you did the same.

Dinner should 100% be his favourite takeaway, eaten on the couch, of course.

I don't know why, but I don't get the vibe that Aizawa is that interested in sex on Valentines Day. I think he'd prefer the intimacy to come from a shared bath or a massage.

And ideally the night ends early, so he can face tomorrow well rested, for once in his life.

Mic

Hizashi loves cheesy romance, he lives for cheesy romance! He eats, sleeps, and breathes it!

I think receiving gifts is something he loves, so get him a pink teddy bear, get him a comically oversized chocolate bar, get him a sappy card filled with cheesy love poems (bonus if you write them yourself.) He loves it all.

He also wants to be at home, because he's worried about people recognising him and interrupting the date.

He would love, love, love if he came home to a trail of rose petals to follow, he's always wanted to do that!

I think he'd enjoy cooking dinner together, just making a mess, playing around, listening to music.

Please pull him to dance with you, he will melt.

Once the food is eaten and the mess left for tomorrow, I think he'd want to do some sort of activity. A board game, a video game, painting together, anything! He's having fun as long as he's with you.

And then... well he's certainly not going to complain if one of your gifts to him was lingerie or a new 'toy'. And it would be rude to not try them out 😏

Toshinori

His idea of romance is old school. He developed his taste mostly from films, rather than experience, after all.

He wants roses so badly. He can't decide if it's more romantic to get a dozen roses, or just one, so he'll let you decide.

I think something private would be more meaningful to him because he's spent his life in the spotlight.

He wants you to meet him at the door with a rose/bouquet of roses, and then lead him into the living room of your home, where you've laid out a fancy dinner.

He wants the fancy dinner table to be set to the nines, he wants candles, champagne, and some food that he can eat. He wants classical music playing in the background.

And then he wants you to pull out his chair for him and wine and dine him until he's completely smitten, not that that's hard.

He doesn't mind if you order the food, but he'd prefer if you either made it by hand, or had it ordered from a special place as opposed to just off a food delivery app. He wants everything to feel special.

The best way to finish the night after dinner is with a movie. One of his favourite films, probably a ridiculous American action film or terrible romcom.

He needs some good old fashioned cuddling at the same time of course.

And because he's getting old, he wants to spend the final moments of the day tucked up in bed, talking about feelings and the future, and all the fuzzy things you're both looking forward to in your relationship.

Dabi

Dabi is softer than he will admit, which means Valentines Day with him involved tricking him into feeling loved.

You can't do things that are too typical, because he'll get spooked. If he comes home and sees heart shaped balloons or dozens of roses, he will flee the scene.

Luckily, he is utterly weak for pizza, so if he comes home and you've ordered his favourite pizza and got a video game/film set up, he can't resist.

"This isn't some weird Valentine's shit, is it?"

"It's just pizza, Dabi, but if you don't want any, I'll eat it all."

"What? In your dreams, knothead."

Once you've lulled him in with pizza and games, you can start putting the moves on him.

He's almost always down for sex, so that part is easy. The hard part is stopping him from escalating it into something rougher, and keeping it gentle.

He gets frustrated at first that you're being too soft on him, and it's at this point that you start lavishing him in praise and body worship. His frustration turns into bashfulness and Dabi gets kind of shy.

Let him know how much you love him.

And then, right when you're both about to drift off, wish him a Happy Valentine's Day.

Dabi sleeping late was the most normal thing about Dabi. But when he had a hangover, it became ten times worse.  

It was two in the afternoon, and you still hadn’t seen Dabi walk out of his bedroom. You had the briefest idea of him dead in the room, but you decided against this idea.  

You were cooking tonight's dinner while watching once again some stupid game show that your friends in school had gotten obsessed with. You didn’t mind spending the afternoon doing housework and periodically checking into Dabi's room to see him still sleeping.  

The show went on commercial break and right at the same time Dabi’s door was flung open and Dabi ran to the bathroom.  

You tried to ignore the sounds of Dabi emptying his stomach while getting him a glass of water and taking a piece of bread out of its package.  

After Dabi came out of the bathroom with a toothpaste mark on his shirt and hair wildly unkept.  

He sat down around the dining table, hiding his face behind his hands. You didn’t say anything and put Dabi’s breakfast and lunch in front of him.  

The game show started again.  

“Can you please shut that thing down...” Dabi sounded awful and took a sip of the water.  

You lowered the volume and continued your previous task of cooking.  

“How are you feeling?” You asked.  

“Why do you ask such stupid questions? Can’t you see how I am feeling.”  

“Oh, I know how you feel. I was just trying to be polite, like people often do.” 

“Shut up.”  

You knew that he wasn’t really mad, he was just trying to be an asshole.

“Twice filmed a lot of it... Like so much of it...” The terror seeped deeper and deeper into Dabi's core with every word you said.  

“You are terrible at karaoke, and dancing and at pool and,” Dabi interrupted you: “Okay I get it!” 

You took your phone from your pocket and pulled up the video. Dabi was, in fact horrible at karaoke, trying to sing with Toga and Twice while he had to hold on to Twice to stay on his feet.  

Dabi lasted about five seconds through the video before he was back on his feet, running at full speed to the bathroom to get rid of the bread and water that he had just eaten.  

You hummed to the music in the video before yelling: “Hey what’s the name of this song, it’s really good!”  

Dabi said something that sounded a lot like “fuck you” but there was no way to be sure of that.

Was listening to Rewrite the Stars from the Greatest Showman while writing this so expect the vibes to be heavy 🙈

Fuck. Fuck.

How could the plan go so terribly? You’d gotten the League all the information they needed. You’d preformed perfectly- as had they. But here they were. Trapped in holding cells, under consistent surveillance.

Somehow, in all the chaos, no one was any the wiser about you being apart of the League. After all, you were All Might’s perfect, feeble, quirkless daughter.

Not like you’d be capable of that anyway.

So here you were, tasked with bringing your former friends their dinner. The surveillance was heavy, so you had to be careful not to let anything slip.

The rooms were quirk-proof, a precaution to keep you safe. What a joke. They were worried the League members would try to attack you. Ridiculous.

After making your rounds, Dabi was all that was left.

You’d been in a tough situationship with him for a little over a month now. Stolen kisses and drunken escapades- it was fun. But that’s all it was. All it could ever be. Feelings…needed to stay out of it.

You scan your ID, and the door to the cell opens.

“Dabi.”

His head turned lazily around at the sound of your voice. He was frail, probably due to the slop you’d been forced to feed him daily. That tacked on with the fact he only got two a day, as well as him not getting much physical activity, made his stature almost ironically fitting.

He was on the floor, legs bent doing sit-ups. His shirt was on the other side of the room.

The cameras were in all four corners, as to avoid having any blind spots.

“Well hey there, Doll Face.”

You sighed, setting his food on the table and turning to leave, albeit reluctantly.

Suddenly he was behind you, hand gently rested on your wrist.

“Wait.”

You knew what time it was. The surveilling guard was kn his dinner break right now, and you had maybe five minutes. Maximum.

“Y/N. Please.”

Dabi knew what time it was too.

“Dabi…we can’t.”

You knew exactly what he wanted. A conversation. You couldn’t look back at him, not when you know he had that look in his eyes. Not when he’d been trying to have this conversation for weeks now, and you’d avoided it before they all ended up caught.

“Please…”

He sounded so broken though. So…done.

Gently, he pulled you to him, hugging you from behind. You closed your eyes, reveling in the feeling. In another life, maybe another world, he’s be hugging you like this from behind after he came home from work. You’d be cooking dinner, the house would smell of marinated chicken and potatoes.

Just one last time, you decided. This was the last time.

“Y/N. Listen to me. You need to stop running. From your father, from this, from us. From me.”

Your eyes fluttered open, bringing you back to reality.

“That’s not possible, Touya.”

He sighed, turning you around and lacing your fingers in his. He brought his other hand to cup your face.

“All I want to do, Y/N. All I want to do is kiss you. We could do it, you know? Get out. Get things back to how they used to be. You and me. Screw the others. Screw out fathers- screw society. Y/N, we could leave. Please, fuck,” he looked into your eyes when you almost pulled away, “stay with me.”

You sighed. No time like the present, right? “Touya… I’m not yours.” Your voice broke heavily. “I don’t deserve you- you don’t deserve to be trapped with someone like me. I’m going to get you all out of here…but I won’t be coming with you, Touya. Eventually you’ll see- I’m not the one for you.”

His eyes watered, as did yours. He wasn’t physically incapable of crying, but you were. You had to wrap this up, before it got any more difficult.

“Touya…Dabi. I can’t come with you.”

His eyes searched yours. “Y/N, since you walked through the door of that bar I have loved you. I love you. Please, fuck, don’t do this.”

“Touya, everything is keeping us apart. Our lineage, society, hell even what we want out of life. It’s impossible, Touya.”

“It’s not.”

He squeezed your hand harder, and you looked back up to him. “Y/N, it’s possible. You and me, baby,” his voice cracked, “we can do this-”

“No, we can’t. Do you know why I joined the League, Touya? I wanted to be free. I was sick of society walking all over me and others for things we couldn’t control. There are things we can’t do, Touya, and tearing down all of society? That’s one of them. I’ll get you all out of here. But after that…”

“Y/N-”

“After that you’ll realize, Touya. I’m not the one meant for you.”

“Y/N, all i want is you.”

“And all i want is you. But, Touya,” a sob slipped through, “I can’t have you.”

He pulled you close, kissing you, This was different. Tears mixed with blood and feelings clashed. For him, this kiss was hope. For you, it was goodbye.

You pulled away. “Touya. I can’t have you.”

He looked at you, eyes searching yours once more. “Baby…Y/N, please.”

“Goodbye, Touya.”

Your hand slipped from his, and you made sure to shut the door behind you. You broke down onto the floor, back against the door. Sobs wracked your whole body.

A week later, the footage was leaked to the public. The night you were meant to break the League out. Those left in this fucked society decided, you were to be executed.

Your last thought, as you faced the blood stained wall, was that if you’d only been faster. If you’d only seen through what the heroes were planning that day. You could have stopped this.

The footage was broadcasted around the nation, All Might’s child’s execution. It was ironic, in a way. A real fuck you to society.

As the executioner cocked his gun, you thought to yourself. Maybe this was written in the stars. Maybe, if you’d tried harder. If you’d been better. You and Touya could be back with all the League in a safe house right now. If you fought, now, you could have him. You could try to fight the guard, try to get to him.

You could have him.

All Might’s daughter and Endeavors son. What a ridiculous notion.

Just before the bullet hit, your last thought hit you and your vision blurred, tears finally falling.

Not like you’d be capable of that anyway.

I think that Shoto's emotionless face would work best for this type of scene but I still prefer Natsuo to say that since he was closer to Touya as a kid.

Imagina: Dabi and Tomura kidnaped/took hostage a few people and Natsuo is one of them. Tomura barely interacts with Dabi in front of them; practically 2 work-only sentences and a single exchanged look before he leaves the room to take care of something. And after a while of nervous/uncomfortable silence Natsuo shots "So... How long are you two fucking?".

Lol, Dabi immediately turning around, mortified and losing his cool so quickly. Blushing hot enough to turn his staples orange, telling Natsu to shut the fuck up. Shigaraki coming back to find out what's wrong as Dabi and Natsuo get into an argument that starts with 'Shigaraki is my boss, technically. And he is terrible, face-wise. And how-how- do I know, frankly, that you're not sleeping with him?' and ends with' I can't believe you faked your fucking death and TOOK ME HOSTAGE!!!'

As a person who doesn't actually ship any characters, writing for DabiHawks Week 2024 has been very fun. It started as a way to get rid of writer's block and has been very helpful. Hopefully I will actually be able to write genuine romance ^^'

I'm trying to include as many prompts as possible while keeping it PG13-ish (including the NSFW and Dead Dove prompts, with some more as offhand references and others key plot points), and also each one will be a crossover. Just to make it more fun.

Day 1 (sci-fi) will be a Star Trek crossover, specifically in The Next Generation era. Section 31 spy Hawks and mixed species terrorist Dabi. (Done)

Day 2 (mythology) will be an Avatar the Last Airbender myth told by a canon character, with non-bender Touya and airbender Hawks (with brief avatar!shouto and friends cameos). (Editing stages)

Day 3 (arranged marriage) will be Ouran High School Host Club. Keigo is a scholarship student and popular host, and Touya is the disinherited rich boy. Speedrunning enemies to loves (well, enemies to queerplatonic partners) (Drafting stage)

Day 4 (post-war/wound care) will be Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, with bird chimera!Hawks and homunculus!Dabi (Editing almost complete)

Day 5 (forbidden love) will be Soul Eater. Weapon!Hawks, Meister!Miruko and witch!Dabi (Outline stages)

Day 6 ('Til death do us part) is Dungeon Meshi, with hopeless romantic and terrible cook Hawks and overly obsessive monster cooker Dabi (outline stages. I also need to watch all of the show)

Day 7 (Songfic) is Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with siren!Hawks and Slayer!Dabi (with potential!Shouto and monster!LoV cameos). Everyone will be genderswapped, because I couldn't NOT do it that way (outline stages)

Hello I am here from your lovely little A03 fic. I may not be an artist, but I can give you some hopefully tasty little thought crumbs? May I propose Shigaraki trying sitting on the couch with Tokoyami on the floor between his legs ever so carefully grooming his feathers, pinkies raised like a proper gentleman. (Trying to copy something he's seen Dabi do with Hawks wings + several youtube tutorials) Several accidental or purposeful avian mating instincts like providing food (can come from either side, ends up with little treat presents. Perhaps one is even a terrible cook -but still tries- to add some contrast) Birds like shinys. If Shigaraki wear shiny... Tokoyami like? (This is Shigaraki's though process to maybe start wearing jewelry) Including Dark Shadow in video games as well <3 I also just personally like to think of Tokoyami as at least little ace-spec so he is clueless to at least half of Shigaraki's intended advances. And someone is going to have to smack him and be like 'You do realize Shigaraki is trying to court you right?' (or have a very slow realization kind of burn idk). I don't know if this helps at all or not, but if you like it I can try to think of a few more? Tokoyami is my favorite character and I eat any and all fics where he gets found-familyed with Hawks. Your story scratched that little itch and made me very happy :)

There's not as much level of hate in JP spaces because they read the original dialogues in the way as intended by the author and not the shitty localised version by a biased translator. Idk if you are on twitter but the translator has ruined the last 2-3 chapter translations. And also when Tomura escaped AFO's control and when Hawks lost the quirk. And that's why JP fans understand the themes better than the English fans.

Not gonna say Caleb Cook has never gotten anything wrong, but I generally think he gets it right more often than not. I've seen when fans try to correct the translations, and sometimes the nuance is captured, sometimes not at all. And as if fans can't be biased as well.

I distinctly remember when English-speaking fans tried to claim that Dabi in chapter 306 was saying something along the lines of 'the exposure of Endeavor's abuse was not enough for people to care'. That was completely wrong. Caleb's translation of Dabi saying 'he didn't go far enough/Endeavor needs more bullying' was the correct one. I know this because I took a look at it myself. However, my translation could be flawed too. So I look to the Japanese tweets that quoted that sentence saying things like “Dabi-kun, are you taking lessons from demons (in sadism)?" or "You've tortured your family enough... stop it," or cheered him on, wanting to know what horrible moves Dabi will think of next. What the author intended here was to show Dabi wants to completely break Endeavor's spirit and soul, but English-speaking fans point blank said 'no, that's not how I want it'.

Meanwhile, English-speaking fans are very eager about Caleb's translation of Yoichi saying Shigaraki was groomed to be full of hatred, or Shigaraki telling AFO that he knows AFO groomed him. The original japanese is actually "that was how he was raised/brought up," and "that was how you raised me/brought me up". With context, yeah, Yoichi and Shigaraki is saying that AFO raised him up in a negative way, he was raised in malicious conditions - 'groomed' is indeed one possible translation, but I personally think that word is loaded with connotations that makes it more charged than the original japanese. I would've gone with 'brought up', maybe 'trained'.

I'm not defending Caleb here, exactly. I think he did a disservice when he translated Toga's line about Saito thinking she's not human as 'Saito will think I'm a freak'. The gist is the same - Saito will be repulsed by her - but for me, 'not human' better fits the context of Toga's life's journey to be seen as normal, as a regular human being. I have no idea what he was thinking when he translated Spinner's 'Shigaraki-tachi' (Shigaraki and the others/Shigaraki's group) as only 'Shigaraki' when Spinner woke up Kurogiri.

For the most part, Caleb's just trying to capture the feel of things, then make sure it's convey in a natural sounding manner. Lots of potential for disagreement in the process. As someone once puts it, you are guarantee to fail when translating, so what you're doing is deciding how to fail. And failure also means different things to different people.

Caleb gets things right, and gets things wrong. From my observations, English-speaking fans think Caleb gets things right when the translations fits into their pre-existing conceptualizations and never question it; and English-speaking fans think Caleb is so terrible he should be fired when translations don't fit their pre-existing conceptualizations. Where does the bias come from? Trick question, it's in everyone.

So is the hate because Caleb's translation isn't accurate and people misunderstood bnha's themes? I gotta say, not really. Is the hate because people have a vision of what bnha should be like in their head, and get angry when canon goes a different path? I think this is more likely. I don't think it's the whole reason. But its contribution is there.

Whether or not this is the reason why Japanese fandom spaces seems - to me - to have less hate than English speaking fandom spaces, I don't know. Like I said, maybe the hate levels are the same because I'm just looking at the nice things that floats at the top as I wade through Japanese fandom, but haven't dive down into the deep sea hate, while I enter a submersible to be crushed by the high pressure hate every time I return to the English speaking fandom.

— Team Undercook: Tomura, Toga, Kurogiri, Spinner, Mustard.

— Team Overcook: Dabi, Twice, Mr. Compress, Magne, Giran.

Tomura: lacks the patience, reason why he lives mostly on energy bars and instant cooked meals.

Toga: likes her meat bleeding and her vegetables raw. You know the drill.

Kurogiri: good at cooking, still sometimes he forgets how is normal for a human, since he is a nomu.

Spinner: panics about having overcooked. It's undercooked instead.

Mustard: worst in the League at estimating how much time it's gonna take.

Toonami Weekly Recap 03/18/2023

Food Wars: The Fifth Plate (Promotion Exams Arc) EP#74 (01) - Final Exams: With the finals for Totsuki's first term arriving, Soma and his classmates in the Elite Ten are given the challenge to renovate an abandoned beach restaurant and earn a 3 million yen profit within three days. Meanwhile, the rest of the class are given easier assignments to run existing restaurants. In addition, the exams are being overseen by a new instructor, Suzuki. Suzuki seems to take an interest in Soma, who gets the impression he has met Suzuki before. Soma and his classmates are only able to open their restaurant on the third and final day due to the renovations they needed to make. However, they are able to attract a massive crowd thanks to their special yakisoba, which uses a combination of vegetables, minced squid, squid ink, red olive oil, and soft boiled egg yolks. By the end of the day, they are able to make their quota and pass the exam. However, as they make their summer vacation plans, Dojima arrives and informs them that the most prestigious cooking competition in the world, BLUE, is set to begin soon.

My Hero Academia Season 6 After the PLW Arc EP#129 (16) - The Hellish Todoroki Family, Part 2: When he was a child, Keigo Takami lived in a poor and abusive household. His father was a villain who went on the run with his mother after killing someone, inadvertently having a child, who he would treat terribly. Keigo would watch news broadcasts of Heroes, but never believed in them beyond fantasy, clinging to his Endeavor doll as his only source of happiness. One day, his father is arrested by Endeavor, reinvigorating hope in the boy that Heroes are real. He and his mother are left on the streets, as she begs him to use his wings to do something. After Keigo saves some civilians from an incident, they are approached by the Hero Public Safety Commission, recruiting Keigo to be a hero while also cutting all ties of the "Takami" name for them both. In the present, Best Jeanist and Hawks drive through the city, where they explain how they were able to put Best Jeanist into a "death-like state" to fool Dabi before he was revived. Best Jeanist stops a group of thugs on the street, where he learns the police are too busy rounding up the escaped convicts, and the hero offices nearby have shut down, causing them to notice how much the faith in heroes has dwindled. They arrive at Hawks' mother's home where he finds a letter from her explaining how Dabi had sent men to force her into revealing his past, and that she has fled to not cause him anymore trouble. Hawks laments on his failure to save his mother and instead run from his past, and declares his intention to do what he wants to do now and help Endeavor. Meanwhile, civilians have started to take matters into their own hands using support items to fight villains, but their inexperience only leads to more damage and more decrying for the Heroes being late. Endeavor regains consciousness in the hospital, breaking down over Dabi and his past sins coming back to haunt him. Shoto and his siblings awkwardly walk in on him as he tearfully attempts to apologize for his guilt and actions. He is then confronted by Rei regarding his current state, telling him they need to talk about Toya.

My Hero Academia Season 6 After the PLW Arc Arc EP#130 (17) - The Wrong Way to Put Out a Fire: The Todorokis reminisce on their past history that led them to this moment. Enji and Rei had discovered that while Toya possessed a fire Quirk greater than his father's, he had his mother's constitution, making him resistant to ice but weak to his own fire. In an attempt to protect him, Enji ceased all training with Toya, but when that refused to deter him, he decided to have more kids to make him lose his resolve. After Natsuo's birth, Shoto is born with the Quirk combination Enji desired, to his joy and Toya's devastation. After an incident where Toya had a breakdown and nearly attacked Shoto, Enji banned all interaction between Shoto and the other siblings. By the time he was 13, Toya continued to grow more emotionally distraught with his siblings and mothers, while also training his Quirk to the point his fire grew from red to blue. He wanted to show his father his progress, but upon the realization he had continued his training, a furious Enji took his anger out on Rei. This reached her breaking point, resulting in the incident of Shoto's burning and her hospitalization, followed shortly after by Toya's supposed death as his Quirk went overload and burned the entire mountain down. In the present, Rei declares to Endeavor that he isn't the one suffering the most, and they all carry a small weight in Toya's downfall, so they will help deal with him together. Hawks and Best Jeanist then arrive, telling Endeavor about the current state of the world and requesting a team-up to help solve their problems together. Hawks then asks him about "One For All", as Endeavor's mention of it during the battle with Shigaraki has spread to the public asking questions, leading him to tell them about Midoriya. Meanwhile, All Might continues to watch over Midoriya alone, knowing he is currently having a conversation with the predecessors of One For All.

Chapter Thoughts: 376 — On Knife’s Edge

Back from a pretty intense string of work days and not-long-enough vacation, and getting back into the meta! I don't have a tremendous amount to say about this very transitional chapter, but have a small collection of observations anyway:

O  Other than just for the visual, I wonder why Toga partially detransforms when she notices Ochaco and Tsuyu’s arrival?  I suppose if she isn’t transformed, she can stop her timer on it, giving her more time transformed later, but it seems like the camouflage would be more valuable any way you cut it.    

O  Loling at Kinoko complaining about having her spores counteracted by Dabi’s fire again, just like at the Villa against Machia.    

O  Haha, wow, that translation about getting the defeated villains away from the scene lest they get burned up is way different from the leaker’s translation that they had to be gotten away lest they be set free (presumably by the Twice Legion).

It’s certainly true, though, that Dabi does not have a history of being extraordinarily careful about where his fire goes.  Indeed, one of the big differences between Todoroki combatants and, say, Geten is that Geten has very fine control over his element but can’t produce it out of thin air, whereas the Todorokis can freely create their element but have minimal control over it after they’ve manifested it.  They can’t extinguish their own flames (nor Shouto vaporize his ice), which is perhaps a decent parallel for the way their family problems likewise tend to require a measure of outside intervention.    

O  Jirou’s line about the Demon Lord feels a bit off to me, like she’s buying into AFO’s narrative in ways that I don’t know if feel terribly in character for her.  Tokoyami I can absolutely see calling AFO by that moniker, but Jirou?  Some of that could be chalked up to C. Cook’s oft-erratic attempts to localize idioms or different levels of formality, but this one’s straight out of the Japanese.    

O  It's telling, I think, that for all the time and page count spent implying that heroes are never going to win this without finding a different approach, and the same amount of focus on Class 1-A being the path to a brighter future full of better heroes, here we see that for at least some of the students, they are still very much mired in a fight or flight binary.

To wit, Tokoyami says that there's nothing they can do here, so they must flee. One or the other, not even a thought to finding another solution. Talking to the villains is not even tabled, despite that being exactly what Ochaco charged after Toga yelling about wanting to do.

Now, of course, the heroes have repeatedly squandered a lot of their less high-stakes chances in this regard, so the villains are very much not in a place that they're at all easy to talk to (though AFO leaving the field would sure help), but that's kind of the whole point. Heroes reject all opportunities to talk to villains in favor of just stopping them, no questions asked about why they're acting the way they are, and so the villains just come back more violent, more extremist, and less open to communication each time. That is the cycle that cannot be broken until, as Nedzu said, someone takes the difficult and frightening first step of changing it.

Shouto's made some attempts and at least got Dabi talking; Mirio made a single quip about Shigaraki lacking friends and made ShigAFO go totally haywire; Deku is looking for signs of an opening to make dialogue. For all that I think they were trite, even victim-blamey nonsense, the effects of Shouji's words are clear: he brought a riot to a standstill.

To say the least, I'll be watching closely what Ochaco does next. Unlike Tokoyami,* she has not at all raised the possibility of fleeing, and, while the narrative jumping around and Toga's own difficulty in being pinned down keep cutting her off, she has made a few attempts at engaging Toga verbally. Here's hoping she gets the time to finally go all-in.    

O  Touya promising to destroy as much as he can of what Endeavor is trying to protect is a curious line in the current context.  Who or what is there, here, that Endeavor is protecting that Dabi hasn’t already destroyed, and that would be compelling and relevant?  There’re all the kids, of course, but much more prominent in the Todoroki story in general is Hawks.

There’s no shortage of people suggesting that a second confrontation between Dabi and Hawks would give Endeavor a chance to intervene in some fashion, and I quite like the idea of Endeavor having to save his eldest from Hawks’ ruthless pragmatism.  Conversely, saving Hawks from Dabi would send all the wrong messages!  On the other hand, Hawks really does need to—as AFO points out—face the consequences of his murder of Twice, and while Dabi has some precedent for involvement in that plot, Endeavor decidedly does not, and I’d kind of hate to see Toga’s plot, and Ochaco’s along with it, get sucked into the Todoroki Family Drama.

Something to keep an eye on!    

O  AFO’s comment about Kurogiri is potentially very interesting, but a little thin at the moment to bank much on.  Did he expect Kurogiri to come to him, so Kurogiri not having done so is sub-optimal?  But Kurogiri’s whole purpose was to look after Shigaraki Tomura, so unless he gave Kurogiri instructions otherwise, of course Kurogiri would go to Shigaraki!  But then x2, if he gave Kurogiri explicit instructions to come to him and Kurogiri didn’t follow them, wouldn’t he remark on that in somewhat stronger terms than just vague musings about what Kurogiri probably did?

My hope is that Kurogiri’s reactivation is in some fashion not quite as AFO expected thanks to Spinner using The Hand and his own naked plea instead of a voice recording, and that this small change will balloon outward in ways that complicate AFO’s plans.  I don’t think we can quite say that for sure based just on his very tiny proviso, but it wouldn’t be out of keeping for AFO to downplay anything that goes in the slightest wrong, so I definitely don’t think we can rule it out yet, either!  Fingers crossed.    

O  It was and continues to be hilarious that Hawks can still delay AFO when they both know good and well he’s on borrowed time by asking him more needling questions about his plans.  I would ask AFO if he’s capable of pressing pause on the stereotypical Evil Overlord behavior for one single minute, but I know he isn’t, nor would he want to be.    

O  Hmm.  Back in Chapter 354, Hawks thinks very explicitly that Endeavor as he is now (or at least as he was in Chapter 354) could not fight and beat Dabi.  Yet here, Hawks begs him to “put a stop to Touya.”  Now, I don’t for a moment think that Hawks has really stopped thinking of Dabi as Dabi; I’m altogether sure he just used the name Touya for Endeavor’s sake.  But does he think Endeavor can do this now?  Has something in Endeavor’s various proclamations over the course of the fight changed his mind?  Or does he still not really believe Endeavor can win, and that’s the reason he lays out the stakes at such length, and then openly begs him—please, put a stop to Touya?

Of course, one also can’t discount the possibility that he is also wagering Endeavor is less likely to die against Dabi than he is in a continued battle with AFO.  Be it personal affection or the stark calculus of keeping the Number One alive for future battles now that the current plan has failed, we certainly can’t take Hawks jerking AFO’s chain about how Endeavor’s already beaten him and doesn’t need to do so again at face value.

(Mind you, Hawks successfully jerking AFO’s chain about how he lost to Endeavor is very funny.  Truly, if it weren’t for the fact that engaging AFO is keeping Hawks from much more interesting confrontations, I’d say they deserve each other. As it is, I would like AFO to kick that bird out of the sky now, please and thank you.)    

O  Endeavor getting the tiniest bits of eye-shine in that last panel there, I see.  As indicators go for how Horikoshi wants us to read his feelings towards Touya, that’s a fairly positive one, particularly for Enji.  Judging from a quick scan through his wiki gallery and a few of his key scenes, eye-shine is quite rare for him; I could only find it for his two, “Watch me,” statements to news cameras, a little bit during the High End fight, and this chapter’s final panel.  Best of luck with those good intentions, Enji!  Because man, are you going to need it.
