Issue 7 (Nov / Dec 1991) of CYBERTEK - a cyberpunk zine / newsletter featuring articles on technology, security and self-reliance. Shared with permission from Dr. Aure Schrock (original tweet), who kindly told me that some issues of CYBERTEK can be found on the Internet Archives (here's Issue 9 from Jan / Feb 1995). Edit: With regards to some of the comments from people on this post, I asked Cyber-Tek's editor if he'd like to add a clarification: "1. That issue came out over 20 years ago. 2. I'm a quarter Jewish. 3. Most of the kleptocrats who comprise what might be called The New World Order are WASPs. 4. Some people have too much time on their hands."

(VamPaper AU Chapter 1) Theatrical Divide
“There it is!”
The premiere of Sandpaper’s new movie was at the exact movie theater where our Rocham-bros were headed, as well as their bright and brainy neighbor, Pencil (who Paper may or may not have a crush on).
“I still can’t believe this is happening! Paper, YOUR SISTER gave us tickets to her new movie, Fangs For Nothing!”
“…we could have done without them being sent by rocket launcher, Paper mumbled, knowing FULL WELL what his older sister was like.
“I’m just in awe,” added Pencil, still processing the overall atmosphere of the large cineplex. The lights, the sounds, everything… normally, as a worker of CyberTek, she wouldn’t be surprised, but this was different. SHE actually got to SHARE THIS with others. She loved movies, but until she accidentally got mail meant to go down the hall, it was kinda lonely. “I’m actually going with friends. To a movie. About VAMPIRES!”
“I know, I’ve never been to one of these befo- waitdidyousayvampires?”
“Um, YEAH?” Answered Scissors, his blades dropping in shock. “What did you THINK it was about, WEREWOLVES?!”
“Honestly, I’d prefer vampires,” Rock mused, “they are CLASSY.” All of a sudden, the lights began to shut off, and a pair of smoke machines started at the entrance. Right there on her own motorcycle, she zoomed along the corridor, flame machines each activating as she zoomed by their motion sensors, and an immediate stop.
It was the star of the new movie herself, Paper’s older sister, Sandpaper.
“Hope I didn’t miss the trailers,” she quipped, as everyone but Paper started to cheer.
“You DON’T HAVE to make every entrance dramatic, sis,” Paper groaned, to which the older sister replied, “Or do I?”
“Hang on, THAT’S your SISTER, PAPER? You’re related to an action movie star?? Are you FOR REAL???” At this point, Pencil’s own hands were shaking from the sheer excitement. And NOT just because of the vampires.
“And you must be the future sister-in-law my baby brother has been talkin’ about.” The “baby brother” in question was now trying to escort all of them to the snack counter, but as you could expect, he was genuinely shaking. What if the secret got revealed?
“Two popcorn buckets. Only fill one,” he hurriedly told the vendor. “Okay, but why?”
“Yeah, Paper,” interjected Scissors, a mocking grin upon his blades, “you scared I’ll eat too much popc-“ but before he finished, he threw up into one of the empty tubs of popcorn, as Paper handed the other to the vendor.
“THAT’S why.”
~~~~~~~
As the movie went on, Paper noticed something about one of the characters- Virgil. Virgil was one of the vampires in the movie, but he still behaved humanly- or, mortally, technically. A genius in his own right, the singular brain cell of the group… it was like the role was made with HIM in mind. But Virgil didn’t want to be a vampire.
“I’m sorry, all of you,” Virgil said in the movie, almost tearfully, to which Paper found memorable. He remembered finally admitting all of the lies to Pencil, and yet she already knew that. He always wondered what she meant when she said that she liked “watching him squirm.”
“But why? You knew exactly how to fend off the vampires!” The five all looked in awe, as Virgil leapt towards the window in the movie. The panes of glass showed no sign of his presence as they opened. “Again with forgetting his reflection…”
“That’s because…” Virgil removed his shimmering ascot from around his neck, revealing a pair of puncture wounds. Rock, Paper, Scissors, and Pencil all gasped at the sight that Sandpaper knew of in the movie. “…I AM a vampire!”
“What a twist! I didn’t expect THAT!”
“Rock! Keep your voice down! There are other people watching,” reassured Paper. Scissors was just trying to avoid crying at the twist. Meanwhile Pencil was still staring at the movie, almost as if that reveal was exactly what she was waiting for… and yet, there were a few tears forming behind her glasses.
“It’s okay, Virgil!” She sobbed, “I know you never wanted to hurt anyone!” As Pencil composed herself again, she looked at the screen and watched Virgil, Sandpaper, and the group of heroes fend off more vampires. Grumpily, Paper still thought he could easily replicate a few moves with training.
“I mean, I totally saw that coming.” No you DIDN’T. You assumed the lack of reflection in any glass Virgil was near was just a mistake in computer animation. Immediately, he had to change the subject, but how? Wait… “And besides, what makes vampires so great anyway?” The other four stared at him as if a pair of wings extended from his back.
“You say that like they DON’T EXIST,” Sandpaper retorted with unbridled confidence. It was like she KNEW they existed as a fact. Paper shook at the thought, but he had to stand his ground.
“B-Because they don’t! Have you ever SEEN a vampire?”
“Have YOU, Paper? If YOU were a vampire, maybe you’d know.” Paper stopped in his tracks. Staring down the crew, he tried to explain that they didn’t exist, but he didn’t know that. His fight or flight reflex was kicking in, and the pressure was crushing him. He couldn’t stop himself. He DIDN’T stop himself.
“Well, maybe all of you would ACKNOWLEDGE me more if I WAS A VAMPIRE!” And with that, he stormed out of the theater.
~~~~~~~
As Paper angrily stomped out of the showroom, most people barely turned their heads, as his steps barely made any sound. Nobody heard his stomping, only the aggression in his voice. Well… ALMOST nobody.
“I just don’t get it. I mean, vampires don’t exist, do they? And if they did, it would be IMPOSSIBLE for someone to hide their identity. But who would want to BE a vampire? They are WEAK against sunlight, you would never see yourself in a mirror AGAIN, and who could POSSIBLY want to be immortal if it means drinking BLOOD?”
“There’s more to it than THAT, my friend,” answered a calm voice. The figure was willowy, with eyes obscured behind crisp black bangs and a small smile traced with ruby red lipstick. Upon her head was a woven navy blue sunhat with a candy red ribbon, and a pair of drop earrings adorned with garnets. Her red ruffled skirt and black off-the-shoulder sweater were accompanied by gunmetal hand chains and a royal purple scarf, the latter overlapping a bloodstone pendant carved to resemble a crescent moon.
“I couldn’t help but hear your little… argument with those so-called friends of yours.”
While Paper was terrified that a stranger approached him directly, he was even more concerned that this stranger heard EVERYTHING.
“D-Did you really notice that?”
“Everyone noticed,” crooned the figure, “you’re not very subtle.” Calmly, the figure walked over, her black heels clicking against the sticky, soda and butter stained floor of the cinema. Paper wondered how those heels didn’t stick to the floor… “Where are my manners? You may call me Scarlett.”
“Okay, well, Scarlett…” Paper shivered at the sight of Scarlett’s scarf obscuring half her face. What could she be hiding? “Is there, um, any reason why you talked to ME? As far as I can tell, I’m pretty boring- argh, why did I say that out loud?!” The tall ravenette calmly held his hand, listening to him as he vented.
“Go ahead, tell me anything.”
“…alright. So, you know Sandpaper, the heroine of the movie Fangs For Nothing? Well, as her younger brother, she gave me and my two roommates- and my super smart neighbor Pencil- tickets to the movie premiere. I was kind of grumpy because I noticed that my friends weren’t taking me seriously. I just want respect!” Scarlett calmly stood up and walked him over to the darker side of the hallway, and offered her hand.
“You are welcome to vent your frustration to me and my allies anytime,” Scarlett grinned, a voice smooth as silk. She peeled an intricate sticker from a small sheet, and held it out to him. The sticker was composed of circles and diamonds, a small circle on each of the quadrilateral’s corners, with each symbol looking familiar… “THIS should help you.”
“Help me what?” Nervously, Paper looked at the sticker… why did it look so ominous? “I’m sorry, but I don’t think I need the sticker. Thank y-“ but before he could just walk away, Scarlett grabbed his arm and held the sticker with her other hand. The rapid movement swept her bangs to the side, finally revealing her eyes.
HER PIERCING RED EYES.
“Maybe I haven’t made myself clear, Paper,” declared Scarlett. “You WILL accept our help.” Paper was now genuinely fearful. He didn’t even tell Scarlett his name! How did she know? The sticker was going to attach itself to him. It already made partial contact, but before it was embedded, he squirmed right out of the red-eyed monster’s grip and ran for a better-lit space. “The hunt is on.”
“Okay! You guys were right! JUST SEND HELP!” Almost immediately, Scarlett clawed at the carpet beneath him, and he fell to the ground… as Scarlett grabbed one arm and affixed the sticker to the other. The searing pain rushed through him, as he struggled to get up, trying to rip the sticker off… but we all know hard it is to perfectly remove a sticker from a piece of paper. Only one corner of the sticker was properly removed, as Scarlett closed in on him.
“It’s already happening. Oh, and your pulse is racing. If I knew you had blood, I would have taken a more traditional approach…” His fight or flight instincts were on overdrive by now. Now that he used flight, he had to FIGHT. As soon as Scarlett got close, he unleashed a powerful hurricane kick, and ran around the corner to the Photo Booth, where he hid.
I should have listened. It was my fault. At least death will be quick at that lunatics hands. He shivered and awaited Scarlett’s approach, as he silently prayed for a miracle. Light steps approached the booth. A pair of hands outstretched and gripped the curtain. Paper quivered as the curtains opened, and…
“PAPER, YOU’RE OKAY!”
It was his friends. Oh thank goodness it’s not Scarlett… now, he was at an impasse. What should he do? He promised his friends- AND Pencil- that he would be more honest, and his sister would know FOR SURE if he was lying about his condition. But for now, he just had to ask…
“Where’s Scarlett?”
Out of confusion, his roommates stared at him, and Pencil calmly asked, “WHO’S Scarlett?” Judging by that answer, they clearly didn’t know, so it was probably unreasonable to ask more. He tried to appear serious, but in his haze, he could barely even stay calm. Okay, JUST explain the situation to your friends, and- …and you’re crying all over the place. Just as long as you avoid giving way to-
“I’M SO SORRY! I LOST CONTROL AND SNAPPED AT YOU AND THEN THIS SCARY LADY WITH RED EYES BEHIND HER BANGS CHASED ME AND- AND-“ Of course. Word vomit. Why not. By the time he stopped talking, he could barely speak. It was like that constant fear gave him a splitting headache.
“I get it,” Rock whispered, attempting to pacify his friend, as Scissors just tried to stop and stare at the damage dealt to their roommate… to which there was very little. “You’re going to be okay. We can protect you.”
“We WILL protect you.” Sandpaper almost immediately swept her baby bro up in a hug, everyone else joining in. “If that freak ever threatens MY little brother again, she’d be DEAD where she stands.” As all of them exited the theater, they all spoke of their experience- Paper trying to listen in, Rock fanboying over the sheer fabulosity of the vampires, Scissors attempting to replicate some of the fighting moves in the film (and failing), Pencil planning on a security system, and Sandpaper already sharing ideas for the sequel.
“UNdead, more like,” whispered an unknown voice.
