Preservation of Italian Dub of Cyberchase

Hello all,

I obtained three Italian DVDs of Cyberchase. While they use the English version of the theme song, the episodes have been dubbed in Italian with a new voice cast. They also have Italian title cards.

Each DVD has three episodes.

Volume 1:

- Hanno rapito il Dott. Marbles (English episode title: Lost My Marbles)

- Mitologia e divisioni (English episode title: Zeus on the Loose)

- E contarono felici e contenti (English episode title: And They Counted Happily Ever After)

Volume 2:

- Il calcolo delle probabilita (English episode title: R-Fair City)

- Una terra per Hacker (English episode title: Sensible Flats)

- Il caso Poddleville (English episode title: The Poddleville Case)

Volume 3:

- Neve a Solaria (English episode title: Snow Day to be Exact)

- Terrore a Symmetria (English episode title: Secrets of Symmetria)

- Il tempo fugge (English episode title: Clock like and Egyptian)

I decided to rip the episodes from the DVDs and stick them on the Internet Archive for preservation.

I find it interesting that they covered the first 10 episodes of Season 1, with the exception of Episode 2, "Castleblanca". I'm not sure why that one got skipped.

I have seen claims on DubDB that the first six seasons of the show (82 episodes) were dubbed in Italian before they stopped: https://dubdb.fandom.com/wiki/Cyberchase_(Italian)

Neither of those pages have sources for the season/episode count. There were probably more episodes in the Italian dub than what I have here. However, these are the only Italian DVDs for Cyberchase that I have been able to find so far. It's possible that there were other DVDs produced for the show in Italy, and it's also possible that they dubbed more episodes for TV that didn't get onto home media releases. It's even possible that a different company and a different voice cast could have worked a separate Italian dub for the series.

The company credited with the Italian dub is VideoDelta. I assume they were part of Delta Pictures, the company whose logo is given the most prominence on the packaging.

Matt was voiced by Stefano Brusa.

Inez was voice by Anna Lana.

Jackie was voiced by Serena Menegon.

Digit was voiced by Davide Garbolino. He also wrote the Italian dialogue and was one of the directors of the project.

Hacker was voiced by Mario Zucca.

Motherboard was renamed to Schedamadre (which is Italian for Motherboard. She was voiced by Marina Thovez.

Buzz was renamed to Floppy. I'd really like to know why, since he was the only one to receive a rename so drastic. He was voiced by Andrea Zalone.

Delete was voiced by Michele di Mauro.

Dr. Marbles was voiced by Olivero Corbetta.

Cyberchase: Italian Translations of Episode Names

Hello all,

I have a slowly-growing collection of Cyberchase DVDs. Some from the U.S, some from Australia, and some from Italy. While the U.S. and Australian ones are in English, the Italian ones have an Italian dub and translated titles. Unfortunately, the DVDs don't have an Italian remake of the introduction song, though I believe something official for that exists now.

Anyway, I wanted to show the titles and talk about them. The original English titles relied on word-play in some cases, which doesn't tend to translate well. The Italian release that I have here is a set of nine episodes spread across three volumes. I haven't seen any other Italian releases for the show, and I don't know the history of Cyberchase dubs beyond this point.

So, let's start with Volume 1.

So, we start with the very first episode of the series. The original English title is "Lost My Marbles". The Italian title is "Hanno Rapito Il Dott. Marbles". This translates to "They Kidnapped Dr. Marbles". So, we lose the pun, but they got the point across.

And then we skip ahead to the sixth episode of the series. The original English title is "Zeus on the Loose". The new title is "Mitologia e divisioni". This translates to "Mythology and Divisions".

I'm a bit torn on this one. On the one hand, the original English title sounds more exciting, as the translated Italian title sounds like something from a dry educational show. On the other hand, Zeus hardly even appears in the episode, so the original title doesn't make much sense. It's more about the kids being on the loose, and them being in danger from various mythological creatures. Even The Hacker spends most of the episode staying out of the kids' business, as he is on his ship struggling to open Pandora's box.

And now, we finish off volume one with the eighth episode of the series. The original English title is "And they counted happily ever after". There isn't much to talk about this one. The Italian title "E contarono felici e contenti" just translates to "And they counted happily ever after.

Now, we move on to Volume 2.

So, we jump back to the third episode of the show. The original English title was "R-Fair City", which is word-play, so we expect there will be a translation problem. The Italian title is "Il Calcolo delle Probabilita". It translates to "The Calculation of Probabilities". This is another title that sounds like it would belong to a dry educational show. I wish they had tried to translate the site name.

And then, we get to the fifth episode of the series. This is "Sensible Flats", which is more word-play. Uh oh. The Italian title is "Una terra per Hacker". This one translates to "A Land for Hacker". I kind of like this title better than the original English title.

And then, we get to the seventh episode of the series. This is the re-edited version of the 1999 pilot, "The Poddleville Case". The title is "Il caso Poddleville", which just translates to the "The Poddleville Case". Just like Volume 1, the last episode gets a 1:1 translation.

And finally, we move to Volume 3.

We start with the fourth episode of the series. The original English title was "Snow Day to be Exact". Yeah, we got more word-play. Okay, the Italian name here is "Neve a Solaria". That translates to "Snow in Solaria". Alright, that seems fair.

Next, we get the tenth episode of the series. The original English title was "Secrets of Symmetria". The Italian title is "Terror In Symmetria". Alright, I know that the "secrets" part in the original title is referring to the kids learning about the different types of symmetry. But, come on, "Terror in Symmetria" is the better title.

And now, we finish our adventure with the tenth episode of the series. The original title was "Clock Like an Egyptian". Yeah, this one needed a completely new title. The Italian title is "Il tempo fugge". This translates to either "Time Flees" or "Time Flies", the latter of which is a popular idiom.

So, there we have it. I had fun looking into this.

Documentation of Cyberchase VHS/DVD Releases (1/?)

I've collected quite a few Cyberchase DVDs over the years. Whenever I find interesting artwork, I make dedicated posts about them. However, I thought it might be beneficial to make one big post documenting all of the different Cyberchase VHS/DVD releases that I am aware of, and which episodes were released on them.

Given that Cyberchase's home media releases are a bit scatter-shot with which episodes they pick, I was curious to find out how many episodes actually got home media releases. This list won't be exhaustive, as I don't have information on some regions where the show was released. Dub DB claims that the show has received 28 different language dubs, and there may be obscure home media releases in those regions.

U.S. DVD Release branded by PBS Kids

All five DVDs in this release contained the "How to Draw Digit" video, as well as the "Cyberchase For Real Funny Bits & Bloopers" video. They are also marked as containing optional Spanish audio. However, in testing Ecohaven CSE, the language setup option for "Spanish" didn't change the episode audio from English to Spanish.

Cyberchase (Australian Release by MRA Entertainment) DVD Volume 2 (+ Italian Release Volume 2 by Delta Pictures)

Alright, today I give you a double feature of Cyberchase DVD scans. One of these is Volume 2 of the Australian release through MRA Entertainment. The other is Volume 2 of the Italian release through Delta Pictures. The MRA Entertainment release had 11 known volumes, while the Delta Pictures release had 3 known volumes.

The reason I am pairing these two up is because the artwork is almost the same. It features the kids flying through the vortex that connects their real world and Cyberspace.

There are some differences, of course. The vortex on the Italian release has the droplets much bigger, as if they zoomed in on the original image. While both of them have a red plus sign and blue-green 2, the Australian release adds a pink plus sign.

The Australian one does have any copyrights on it beyond the 2001 for the show. However, I don't believe it released that early. MRA Entertainment apparently went bust in 2007, so I would guess somewhere between 2001 and 2007.

The Italian release claims the packaging was copyrighted in 2006, and that Delta Pictures license ran from 2004-2009.

Now, the vortex is an iconic part of Cyberchase, and it is great that they included it here. However, the kids seem ever so slightly off-model. There's something off with with Matt's mouth, as well as Nezzie's chin. Jackie remains on-model. Does anyone else see what I am talking about here?
