Oh the urge to not do any homework and instead make a new indie playlist on Spotify titled a word that nobody (not even me) knows
and then have it just be all of mitski, Lucy dacus, phoebe bridgers, and Fiona apple scream singing sad lyrics

"Sugar Water Cyanide" by Rebecca Black
DV:
At some point when I blinked, Rebecca Black became so popular that she's selling out venues in Chicago before I've even heard she's releasing new music. Not long ago, I could see her in London and then fly home and decide to buy tickets to see her again, in a full but not-quite-capacity room. To be clear, I have been predicting this time would come for five years now. And now that it's here I don't like it. But I do like "Sugar Water Cyanide" - or at least I'm interested in it. This is obviously post-Charli pop, or at least post-some iteration of Charli, hearkening back to PC Music and drawing on hyperpop at its most cheerleader. Producer Nightfeelings has worked with Cecile Believe (including on "Ponytail") and Brooke Candy, so he's bringing some of this to the table, but that's also a scene Black's woven herself into over the years, as she's let more humor bleed into her music. That's a big part of what makes hers such a circuitous career path, and it's a big part of what makes "Sugar Water Cyanide" so fascinating. Because in some sense, this is a break from the more narrative- or relationship-driven, emotional songs of Black's past; in some sense it's surprisingly anonymous. But in another sense, it's a song that feels like it could only come from someone who's followed the path she has - a strange nonsequitur of a banger. It might be enough to make hyperpop seem exciting again.
MG:
Alas this is not influenced by Charli XCX; this is influenced by Addison Rae -- right down to the gas station. And both are drawing pretty obviously on the mid-00s Paris Hilton/Lindsay Lohan/Britney Spears aesthetic, some of which does trickle into the production via the verses which could easily be lifted from the unfortunately iconic Paris. I'm going to have to disagree that this is exciting, but I guess I begrudgingly feel like it's meant to signal something, possibly something interesting. I was in the prime of my life during the original era and it's left me grappling with a complicated legacy. I can't tell if Addison Rae and Rebecca Black are speaking to the utter fragility of the women they're referencing or if they just want attention -- which was thought during the era of ubiquitous nip slips and pussy shots. I guess (???) it's empowering to spread your legs on the hood of a car as opposed to having your spread legs photographed as you exit a car? I guess? And I also assume that both Black and Rae (and Charli, too, no doubt, but she's neither the originator or a foremost participant in this revival) are dealing with the fallout of being sexualized as children, an obvious complicating factor in the Hilton, et al media exposure, as well. "Sugar Water Cyanide" is barely, barely a song. It exists so that the music video has sound.
