Reflections: How we are Tessa, and the purpose of GOTSM (meta)

Cassandra Clare said in her latest IG live that the reason the epilogue of Clockwork Princess is forever beautiful but bittersweet is not because we know that the characters, save Jem and Tessa, die. It’s because we know that there will always be people who have to deal with their loss too and live on: a bittersweet concept, seeing someone die and having it remind you of how beautifully they lived. Think of the shared vision Will and Jem had in Learn About Loss when they went to Shanghai - Jem thinks of the fact that Will is about to die soon, but yet Will’s memory is constantly associated with the emotions he suscited as he lived. That’s overwhelming, beautiful, and sorrowful all at once.

There are those of us who have to go on living knowing these characters’ stories, now immortalized in memory- that’s the reader, but it’s also Tessa.

It was easier to die protecting the people you loved than to watch them die in your stead. What horrific choices mortality had to offer.

Tessa lives on through the century and the different stories of all the characters. She’s the chronological inception of the five families’ stories: the Herondales, the Fairchilds, the Carstairs, the Lightwoods and the Blackthorns. She does not die when Will does, nor when her children do. She lives a beautiful life but it’s still a pain to bear her own existence and bear the knowledge of the stories of all the people that she has known and loved over time. Furthermore, their stories live on in her, with her, through her.

Likewise, the stories of the characters live on in us. We as readers in the real world hold the stories we read in books in our minds and hearts dear as we go on with life, and we feel incredibly sad when our favorite characters die. That is the fundamental en-soi of stories: for them to be read and for them to touch our hearts.

The lives of all the characters and all the decades that Tessa has lived, the passage of time, are a literary symbol for the worlds that readers live in when they read books. She has to see what has occurred yet move on and keep living despite her attachment. Thus, Tessa is a stand-in for the reader as she lives on perusing time yet holds these stories dear too. This is incredibly incredibly meta to a level that has me like yooo. She is a living commentary on the relationship between readers and fiction. Moreover, Tessa herself is a reader and finds solace in stories meaning that her meta-ness is twofold. (This has links to the meta-commentary on literature in TID and TLH.)

Now, this is why Ghosts of the Shadow Market feels like an opened wound. (Yes, Jem has been immortal too but now he’s human again, so I won’t put him in the same category as Tessa. Magnus, while we’re here, is objectively not the main character and most of what I’m saying is in fact applicable to him, but in terms of the main plot of the series, Tessa is more relevant.) Clockwork Princess is designed to be read either directly before or after City of Heavenly Fire. In this way, as soon as the reader learns Jem is shipped off to be a Silent Brother and has to battle the beast of time, he immediately gets saved from our perspective based on the way the books were released. We didn’t have to live all the years between 1880 to 2008 and live Jem’s life (or Tessa’s). We learned about The Jem Situation but then we got the outcome quite quickly in terms of the books’ publication order - we didn’t have to wait in suspense for too long to hear Jace’s heavenly fire saved Jem eventually.

Nonetheless, Ghosts of the Shadow Market does in fact give us all the hard parts of immortality: experience. It doesn’t in any means mitigate the value of TID or TMI, yet develops the story of an incredibly important character. If anything at all feels like a sequel to TID, it ain’t TLH, it’s Ghosts of the Shadow Market. We get Jem’s adventures but also his emotions. These stories in GOTSM break that sacred unspoken “happy ending” rule where we now have see the reality of what living is like: we don’t get that “running into the sunset, happily ever after” feeling. Instead, we grieve with Jem and Tessa, we mourn Will, we feel hope like Jem does and it’s all quite overwhelming given how much Jem feels. Yet this pain is again another example of meta-commentary on what time is like and what experiencing stories entails: it’s angst, but to a beautiful end. We get another bittersweet ending at the end of GOTSM: Jem and Tessa finally have their moment, a marriage and a family after 150 years and thus, all of Jem’s pain and living is finally comes to fruition: he is happy with his love. The 150 year old story that began in Clockwork Angel gets a new conclusion. Another layer to the conclusion that the epilogue of Clockwork Princess gave us, and we truly feel like we lived through those 150 years with Jem as he goes through many pivotal changes in his emotional arc. It reminds us that the Herongraystairs story is immortal. Hence, the payoff is amazing as we get to see Jessa thrive, just like got to see Wessa thrive in TLH. Talk about equality amirite.

The meaning is twofold here too: Will’s spirit lives on as Jem and Tessa live, and Will Herondale the literary character lives as long as readers keep reading and remembering how he touched them. Again, the en-soi of books is reiterated too: books live on only when they touch us, and thus memorable stories always have more value on a wider scale in the literary canon. In fact, there’s an even bigger meta value of TSC in this regard, and it’s the way Cassie plays hommage to classic literature, classics, art, and religion and makes meta commentary on art and literature but that is a whole ass essay by itself lmfao (spoiler, but my thesis would be that the meta value of these motifs helps render the classic lit canon relevant yet simple among young people or some shit like that idk).

But anyway, all this to say that we see the story the way Tessa sees it. In the Romance Languages, “history” and “story” are the exact same word, and TSC effectively explores the phenomenon that makes the two one and the same using narration as it concerns the human experience. All of this has great significance as it reiterates the role of literature in our lives and the use of chronological structuring to develop such an extensive story.

Head cannons on the full names of The Last hours Characters.

Written for no other reason than full names interest me and I had fun doing this.

Let’s start with the characters for whom we knows full names.

Charles: full name is is “Charles Buford (I am sorry) Fairchild”, first name is the masculine version of him mother Charlotte’s name (because he is her heir?) and Buford was his paternal grandfather’s name.

Alastair/Cordelia:Full names “Alastair Esfandiyār Carstairs and Cordelia  Katāyoun Carstairs“. A google search of these names tells me they are figures from Persian Mythology; With “Esfandiyār” being a great hero and  “Katāyoun” being his mother. If anyone knows how  to pronounce these two names please let me know in the comments, because I am at a total lose

James: Firstly Thank the Angel that Matthew was just joking with the full name he called James in his speech at the bachelors party. At James Jeremiah Jehoshaphat Herondale I literally had to stop reading and just go “Tessa Will... WHY?” His full name is James Morgan Henry Herondale.  “James” after Jem. “Morgan” is a traditional Welsh name, and it also means “magician” so it can represent both his parents heritage at the same time. “Henry” after “Henry Branwell/Fairchild, but I think I remember seeing a post about how the name also related to a famous murder mystery novel of that era. Cool.

Jesse: His full Name is “Jesse Rupert Blackthorn”. No idea where Tatiana got he name “Jesse”, but “Rupert” would be a tribute to his late father, whom he never got to meet.

Now On to my own personal headcannons for other characters

Barbara’s full name was “Barbara Agatha Lightwood”: We know “Barbara” was the name of Gideon and Gabriel’s late mother. Agatha was a close friend of Sophie’s whom in CWA, along with Thomas Tanner, gave her life protecting the London Institute.  Since neither of the girls first name is “Agatha”I am headcannning it as Barbara’s middle name, because Agatha deserved to be remembered too.

Eugenia: Okay I am going to structure this one a bit different. We don’t know were/how/why Gideon and Sophie decided to name their second daughter “Eugenia” but I personally headcannon that it was Sophie’s mother’s name. As for a middle name, I headcanon her middle name is after the wife of the head of the Madrid institute. Like during Gideon’s time there this women was on Gideon about his behavior: calling him out for wrong ways he behaved and giving him advice when he asked how to do better. Gideon was really greatful for this, as it helped him realize how wrong his upbringing had been and helped him become a better man. As for what this women's name may have been, I googled popular Spanish names at that time... It seems like “Maria” was pretty popular and “Eugenia Maria Lightwood” does have a nice ring to it.

Anna: Full name “Anna Linette Lightwood”. Gonna keep this one simple. Cecily says she picked this one out because “Anna” means “Favored by God” and, after an extremely difficult pregnancy, Cecily felt favored by God/the Angel when Anna came out perfect and healthy. I also cannot help but notice how the name “Anna” is very similar to the name “Ella”. “Linette” is the name of Cecily and Will’s mother. when you read the tiny bit of Cecily’s POV in CWP2 you can get the scene that Cecily grew up admiring her mother, and that, despite her mothers full on shut down during the years that followed Ella’s death and Will running away, Cecily still admired her. Also that would mean Anna’s initials are A.L.L. which suits Anna completely.

Thomas/Christoper: Another one that I am going to double on and structure a bit different. We know that “Thomas” is after Sophie’s dear old friend Thomas Tanner, whom died in CWA. I head cannon that “Christopher” was the name of the “very skilled master” Gabriel mentioned having taught him to wield a long sword in CWP2. (Do not tell me that either of these children are in anyway named after Benedict!!!!) For middle names I originally had headcannoned Thomas’s as “Collins” and Christopher’s as “Carter”... Then I saw a post by the brilliant @littlx-songbxrd who suggested that their full names could also be “Thomas Gabriel Lightwood” and “Christopher Gideon Lightwood”  and I am very much on the band wagon for CC making this cannon.

Matthew: Full name “Matthew Granville Fairchild”. Granville was Charlotte’s father’s name, and since Charles middle name is after their paternal grandfather, it follows that Matthew middle name would be after their maternal grandfather. One Interesting thing that has been pointed out to me is that “Granville Fairchild” was also the name of Clary’s grandfather, who would be either Matthew or Charles grandson. The post also mentioned Aloysius Fairchild, who was Granville II′s father and either Charles or Matthew’s son. So it is possible one of them will end up with a women from the Starkweather family. Also Jace Clary do not name your future son “Granville”; that name is ancient and much better left in the past.

Lucy: we know Lucie has two middle names, just like James. CC has already confirmed that one of her middle names is “Ella” after Will and Cecily’s older sister. I have about three guesses for what her second middle name could be. First it could be “Theresa”. Tessa’s middle name was originally Elizabeth (she would have replaced it with Gray after marrying Will), after her mother. So maybe Tessa continued that Idea and gave Lucie her own name as a middle name. It could be “Jane” because Jane Eyre is mentioned several times to be Tess’as favorite Heroine.... but another idea, Jane Eyre was written by a women named Mrs. Charlotte Bronte. Given the other person by that name, who also had an important influence in Will and Tessa’s life, it is very possible that Lucie’s full name is “Lucie Ella Charlotte Herondale”.

Grace: Her middle name had to do with her biological mother. She no longer remembers what it was, and does not see a point to looking it up. No one ever uses middle names when referring to her, and after all whatever it is she will just wind up dropping it when she escapes (marries)

Alexander: If Christopher’s middle name is “Gideon” Then you know Will badgered Cecily and Gabriel to make their second sons middle name “William”. I could also see that being something Cecily would want to do. Would Gabriel go with it??? He might, especially if I am right about where the name “Alexander” came from... We never found out Gabriel’s middle name, but Gideon’s middle name is “Arthur”. We know the brother are named similarly and “Arthur” and “Alexander” both start and end with the same sound. I could see Gabriel agreeing to let Will be a namesake for his son, as long as a name that was after HIM went first.

Ariadne/Kamala: I have no idea what her middle name would be. But let’s talk about her first names. “Ariadne” was a princess in Greek Mathology, the sister of the Manitour and the sperned fiance of Theseus. In the story Theseus claims he left her stranded on an island half way in between their kingdoms because Dionysus had appeared to him in a dream and claimed Ariadne as his own fiance. Yeah dude, sure he did. “Kamala” is the name of a very pretty red and white flower that grows on small trees/ large bushes. I have such a tree/bush growing in my yard, and I was so surprised when I learned that she was once named something I can pronounce with no confusion. CC has said though that in COT Ariadne will decide she wants to be called a new name that is neither “Ariadne” nor “Kamala”. What? Is she going to try and combine the two names? maybe start going by the initials? “K.A.”? I saw a theory that maybe she is the one to become a downworlder, either after being disowned by her adoptive parents or to try and escape a marriage they set up for her, and that leads her to pick a new name???

Okay, so I don't know if anyone has already done this, but this post inspired me to go back to the epilogue of cwp2 and see who was present at Will's funeral and who wasn't.

First, it's mentioned that all the adults are present, except for Gideon who "passed away several years before." I remember when I read that I thought it meant like 10 or 15 years ago but now that I think about it, this could also mean that Gideon died during tlh. The others not present are Anna and Thomas "Cecy's blue-eyed boys, tall and handsome, and Gideon and Sophie's two girls" of course, this doesn't have to mean they died during tlh, maybe they died just before Will or maybe they are alive but couldn't be present. Then we have the Fairchilds, "charlotte, white-haired and upright, and the Fairchild sons and daughters with their curling red hair like Henry's had once been" so clearly Henry also passed before will, but what's interesting is the "sons and daughters" so unless they had like 2 more boys after Matthew and Charles then this means that at least one of them is alive and present at the funeral.

One thing I don't understand is why so many people are like "I hope Matthew doesn't die since he's not on the family tree!/I wonder why Matthew isn't on the tree?"

Guys... Charles isn't on the tree either. Neither is Charlotte or Henry or Clary or Jocelyn or any of the Fairchilds because it's not their family tree in the first place.

Chain of Iron Theories on the Killer’s 5 victims

tinSo we know that the chain of Iron will have a mysterious killer who will kill 5 shadowhunters. Here are my theories on who will die.

1.) Maurice Bridgestock

Lets start with the obvious first, of course this man will be killed. He is Inquisitor and that is a powerful yet cursed position, take it and you will die a horrible  death. I am hoping he dies pretty early, because I have a feeling until then he will be gunning for the Fairchild family. Remember he and his wife were the ones who really wanted Charles and Ariadne to marry. Charles and Ariadne were originally friends, who both figured that being forced into a hetro marriage was inevitable and that they could both do worse. Charlotte and Henry gave there blessing because they thought Charles and Ariadne were actually in love. Once Charles told this parents that he and Ariadne weren’t they immediately gave him permission to break the engagement and gave their blessing for him to marry someone else (who he doesn’t love either, Oh poor messed up fairchild family). This infuriated Bridgestock. Charles and Charlotte know to avoid him unless it is for official business, done in public, with witnesses. Does Matthew? Chapter 4 is called “The King is Dead”; so maybe the Inquisitor is the “King” listed. The next half of that phrase is “Long live the King” symbolizing the transition of power, so that would mean choosing a new Inquisitor. The most obvious ones to get the promotion is one of the TID dad’s given how close they are with Charlotte and the sway her vote would give. According to the cards it looks like she gives the position to Will (cough Gideon would have been a way better choice cough), we will see how that goes.

2.) One of the Wentworth’s

The Wentworth’s will have importance in the COI.They have been referenced and set up like the Lightwood’s in CWA. We know at least 3 of their names, we know that Martin Wentworth is kind of a thorn in Will and Gabriel’s side. We know that Piers and Rosamund have a... tense relationship with our mains, but do have their own friends and seem close to each other. Honestly with how much this family is mentioned/established I was thinking for a while that it would be just like the Lightwoods in CWP. Like maybe Piers was Eugenia’s ex boyfriend, maybe he had wanted to marry her but bad stuff was happening at home, his dad keeping secrets, and he couldn’t get blessings. Then that snip-bit at the party came out and I read about Eugenia being done with suitors and Piers hitting on Catherine. Piers still may be Eugenia’s ex, and he may trashed her rep and then moved on to courting his sister’s best friend. If so and he dies I will not miss him.

I would say Rosamund is pretty safe. She has a fiance now, and is planing her wedding. Wedding are actually great places for interactions and drama. Rosamund is good friends with Ariadne. Maybe Ariadne will try to bring Anna to the wedding, or maybe Ariadne will have Eugenia ask Anna to accompany her to the wedding, because Anna is less likely to say no to that, and then use that as a chance to “win her back.”

3.) At Least One of The Carstairs Parents

Risa Included. We all care about this family, we all wish their troubles could be over, and tat things and the next two books could be rainbows and sunshine for them. And we all know that will not happen. Terrible things will befall London. Elias is unbalanced from PTSD and weak from detoxing after years of addiction, Sona is weak from a difficult pregnancy/ recent childbirth, Risa is a mundane and lacks the ability to kill demons. They don’t have a lot of friends, all three are old. It is not fair and I hope whoever dies is at least given a good death.

4.) Cecily Lightwood Nee Herondale

I hope I am wrong, please let me be wrong. The family tree and CWP2 epilogue say that she will live through this, but those were written 7 years ago and are no longer accurate. The Second book always has one tragedy that will emotionally destroy us and leave us crying till the third comes out. It is unlikely that all The TID gang will live through another series. Other people have been guessing Gideon, but his branch already lost Barbara in COG2. In a book with so many nuclear families why kill from the same one twice? No it won’t be Gideon. After careful analysis I have determined Cecily is the most likely of the one to die.

First off Cecily didn’t come into TID until the final book and she was mostly squeezed in as a secondary character. That means that CC put less time and development into her and while she probably likes her, is maybe less attached to her. Secondly Cecily is some one very important to Both Will and Gabriel, two people Tatiana hates more than anyone in the world. She also played a key role in Killing the Lightworm, she caused it to wound itself to were Gabriel was able to kill it. For Tatiana Cecily would be three birds with one stone. Another reason she might die is Cecily is the only one of The TID characters who I cannot find any information on what her job/role in the clave is. Everyone else has a job listed, is seen investigating or talking at meetings, Cecily is just a mother, okay the best of the TSC mom’s. But having to take so much time off shadowhunting to raise her children might have put her out of practice, and having such a strong bond with her children, nieces, and nephews would make it all the more heart breaking if she died. One final reason is that unlike her Gabriel does have an overall arch. He idolized a fantasy of who his father was, had that come crashing down, then wanted to become someone different. His wife dying would put Gabriel just were Benedict was when Barbara Lightwood the first died: A single father with three kids, one of whom is coincidentally about the same age as Gabriel was when he lost his mother.

I love Cecily and writing this has made me very say (Please let me be wrong about her dying) but moving on...

5.) Tatiana Blackthorn Nee Lightwood

She will die. Tatiana probably joined Belial willingly, she probably does not see it, but Belial is not her ally. The truth is she is just as much Belial’s pawn as anyone he has tricked. When he is done using her and no longer has any use for her, he will kill her to keep her quiet. She will probably die last, her blood is Jesse’s and can be used as a sacrifice. She dedicated her life to resurrecting her son so she could have him back, and she will die with the knowledge that she has doomed him to Belial’s plans.

Bonus 6.) Charles Fairchild

Charles will not die. I originally I thought he might, but he is actually necessary as a foil/parallel to Matthew. Two brothers who grew up in the same family, yet have personalities and struggles that are literally flip sides of the same coin. Cassandra Clare has said she is planning on “developing” their relationship. She has also said Charles will be away for a lot of the book. So that does not leave a lot of space for this development in COI, and Charles has to make it until COT. I believe that he will disappear. No one will have any idea were he went or why, His parents will send out a search, while that is taking place Charlotte task Matthew with assisting her the way Charles usually does. Matthew will hate it. He will hate the piles of work and stuffy meetings; he will hate having less time to see his friends; and especially the cranky, foul mouthed, horrible politicians he has to deal with instead. As time goes by and the Killer at large Charlotte will become more desperate to find her older son. When she cannot find him her and Henry will start to fear the worst and cry over it at home.

Matthew will eventually start looking into his brothers disappearance, not because he misses him, but their parents are miserable and Matthew is tired of having to do Charles chores.  He might learn Charles and Alastair were “good friends” before and try to force information out of Alastair, Que to him learning one of his brothers secrets. While I do think Matthew will be the one to find Charles I do not think it will be until the end of COI or early COT, when Matthews life has morphed into a much bigger mess than it was before. I also do not think Charles will be in the same... way as he was before his disappearance. There will be a whole new list of issues when the brothers meet again.
