I can feel my blood pressure dropping just from listening to him talk, even with the strange accent he’s using. Everything’s going to be fine. “Do you think he’ll trust us to carry the…?” I trail off suggestively. Creed shrugs. “Depends how superstitious he is, I guess. But my money says…” He stops. His eyes narrow. “What?” I ask, glancing over my shoulder at Holman too. “Shh,” he says, putting a hand on my elbow and pulling me towards the door. “What is that?” The whiplash makes me stagger, and I shake off his grip, annoyed. “Sorry,” he mutters. Then I hear it, too. Footsteps. My heart stops. Peacekeepers from Ballinford. “They found us,” I breathe.

I gasp reflexively and manage to inhale. No! Not today! I thought I was done with this! “That doesn’t mean you have to fight them—” Gasp. “every time—” Gasp. “they show— their faces!” As if on cue, I can see Kautner’s face before my eyes. Feel, with perfect detail, each fingertip, strangling me. I gouge my fingers down my neck, trying to pry his hands away, but there’s nothing to pry. Creed’s voice pierces through the vision. “Fine! So what if I did provoke them? It’s a little ironic for you to tell me what choices to make, don’t you think?” The fingertips shift to the old places, the ones I have memorized. I scream in fury, panic, pain, and kick myself away, dragging my back along the rough wall. I’m free for a moment, though I still can’t breathe right. He’s back, emerging from an imaginary corner, casting shadows in the darkness, but this time the cobalt gefalten is pale blue silk. My eyes stay locked to the fabric. I know its smell. Know the feel of it on my skin. I know how many buttons. I thought I was done with this! I think, almost begging it. I thought I was done with this!
