this episode is also SUCH a jab at networks and interference from higher ups. the original writer is PISSED that they completely changed his story. then there's all the little jabs from the network exec giving "notes" like "the scenes are too dark can't we brighten them up" "sir this is a horror movie" and the exec not understanding the "rules" and "logic" of the supernatural lore and having them put "explainers" in the dialogue. this is a creative team saying FUCK YOU to the network and it's only season 2. which just makes me think of chuck in s15 portrayed not as a mere writer anymore but as an executive canceling shows bc they won't follow his "notes" as well...it's very loud. and you can say what you will abt the season finale and s15 as a whole and i don't like how it ends either but...everything chuck says to becky...the way chuck is portrayed the entire season...and the fact that the creative team have been fighting (and calling out) the network since so early on it paints a pretty clear picture to me that whatever ending they may have wanted was never going to happen bc of network interference. so they planted those seeds throughout s15 to be like "hey......this is going to be the bad ending. but the network is going to try to spin it as a good ending. but it's not. remember what becky says."

how do you have a character say he doesn't care what happens to him and he only cares about protecting others and then two years later kill him off and have him wait around heaven as if he really does not have any identity outside the people he protects. and frame this as a happy and just ending.

Sam realizes he's only in heaven bcz his son is god and has imposter syndrome about it like did I deserve it? did I earn it? was I a good enough person?

Don’t think about Dean in the barn knowing exactly what his surroundings were. Don’t think about Dean knowing if he moved a little bit faster and was a little bit quicker to react then he could survive. Don’t think of Dean being so tired of it all. Don’t think of his exhaustion of knowing they won but what was it all for? Don’t think of Dean in season 2 after finding out his dad died for him and not caring whether he lived or died. Don’t think of Dean in season 11 after he thought Sam died committing suicide (even though he was “going to come back”). Don’t think of Dean carrying Cas’s trenchcoat in every car he switched to in season 7. Don’t think of Dean losing his will to live after Cas died in season 12. Don’t think of Dean’s alcoholism. Don’t think of Dean’s desire for “toes in the sand.” Don’t think of Dean knowing the angel he loved died for him. Don’t think of Cas saying “you changed me Dean” and Dean hearing “you killed me Dean.” Don’t think it it because then you’ll realize that Dean got hit with that rusty rebar because he was tired of living in a world that takes and never gives.

I’m really sad bc I just wrote a whole thing about my take on the Chuck won theory and it didn’t save 🫥
Just…. okay…
imagine a very eloquent and persuasive argument saying that we could never have gotten a good ending on screen, because for TFW to defeat Chuck they’d need to be allowed to escape the narrative entirely.
What I mean is: Supernatural is his show, he was always the one writing it, as well as the one watching it — and it has always been used as the Winchester’s prison. Every single episode is a construct that they’ve been trapped inside.
So the true ending for them is one that doesn’t satisfy Chuck’s need for a conclusion. His defeat would have to mean that the audience loses access to his story. We wouldn’t get to see what happens next, at least not in this show — because our protagonists winning would allow them to abandon the story and all its pre-established rules. They would finally be allowed to exist outside of the confines of the TV show Supernatural.
But the finale we’re shown is one Chuck would’ve wanted, simply because it’s there for us to see. It gives his show a conclusion — one that’s completely in line with everything he’s set up! It does nothing to really challenge the themes that he’s been obsessed with from the jump, which have been causing TFW the most pain:
tragedy, loss, isolation, and sacrifice.
So does this mean that Chuck actually wins? I think the answer is yes and no. I think there is no version of a canon SPN finale that isn’t one of Chuck’s endings — again, because it’s always been his show.
But are the Sam and Dean we see in the finale the “real” Sam and Dean? Personally, I like to think that the real ones got out and made their own story.
The true ending is one where they don’t have to be Chuck’s protagonists anymore — one where they get to live real, unedited, uncensored, long gay lives. Maybe that happens through another medium, or a reboot or a spin-off — anything but the show itself.

Am today imagining the Empty cosmic ooze as hot tar or Bituman (Bible, Euphrates river). Bitumen and tar are closely similar to each other but asphalt is completely a different composition from bitumen and tar. Bitumen state can be in the liquid form with different viscosities or a brittle solid. Tar is a liquid with high viscosity and the asphalt has a solid composition that its viscosity is too high.

which makes me think of tarring and feathering as a ancient form of torture...The use of tar and pitch in punishments appearing in such medieval works as Anglo-Norman sermons, The Purgatory of Saint Patrick by Marie de France and Dante's Inferno have been seen as precursors for the idea of tarring and feathering. The latter also features the element of feathers when a "human thief is painfully transformed into a grotesque simulacrum of nature's thief, the magpie.
Cas is killed as a form of audience-mob violence. The crime? Dean loving him. He's "stolen" Dean's heart. That's why it's on Dean's sleeve in emblazoned red by the end of the scene.
////
It's certainly a match to Dean's impalement/gaunching as a method of ancient torture. (Gaunching was a specialized form of impalement. Rather than insert the stake or pole directly into the individual, they were instead dropped or thrown onto metal spikes or hooks). Alexander Russell, living in Aleppo in the 1740s knew of gaunching but said it was rarely used because of its extreme cruelty.)
The crime? Vengeance for not doing what he's supposed to. For turning against Chuck. His heart is supposed to be with Chuck/God. The resolution? If he can't have it, kill that heart. If he can't have him, nobody will.
///
Sam is, yet again, the Biblical Noah, left to live a full life on Earth in purity en perpetua.

Friendly reminder that this was Dean's first smile in heaven. Not when he saw Bobby, not when he told him about his mother or father, Dean's FIRST SMILE in heaven was when he heard Cas was there. That's when he finally showed any happiness™ at all

Wut did u think abt that epically long death monologue
oh my god. OH MY GOD. JUST LET THE BOWLEGGED MAN DIE. he was like "sammy i'm fading fast" and proceeded to spiel for 10 MORE MINUTES ? GIVE THE MAN SOME DIGNITY. "i always wanted to go out fighting blaze of glory style" well dean honey i hate to break it to you. but you just went out from like the slowest acting blood poisoning of all time. because it wasn't blood loss he was plugged in TIGHT to that rusty nail. it can't have punctured a lung bcos then he would've been struggling too much to breathe to say so many heartbreaking little things. so what was that huh. just a dramatic ass monologue he simply got dizzy from standing up too long and passed out. it took dean as long to die as it took sam to live out 50 years of his life and if that isn't a perfect summation of superantural i do not know what is
