Mary Ann Dancy, 32 (USA 1990)

Mary Ann Dancy was already a mother of five children ranging in age from 2 to 17. When she found out she was pregnant with a sixth baby, she went to Fleming Center in North Raleigh, North Carolina for an abortion on July 27, 1990.

The abortionist documented no complications and sent her on her way, but by the very next day Mary Ann was in the hospital. She had a lacerated cervix and was losing a dangerous amount of blood. Halifax Memorial Hospital rushed her into emergency surgery, but Mary Ann was already dying. She didn’t survive past the night of July 28.

The abortion facility that killed her was sued by Mary Ann’s family. The same abortion facility also faced two other lawsuits in the year that Mary Ann’s family sued. All of the lawsuits were over severe harm to clients who had undergone an abortion, showing a consistent lack of care at Fleming Center in North Carolina.

Mary Ann’s surviving children and her sister Carolyn lost two family members to legal abortion.

Before anything else, I want to tell you about Cory. Because, for me, it's a story about Cory.

I didn't know him well. I wish I had. He was a kid - maybe 20 years old? Maybe as old as 22, as young as 18.

He worked two jobs: one at the CVS that was walking distance from my house, one at the Publix a few blocks away. So I saw him, on average, at least once a week.

He was kind. Soft-spoken. He had buzzed hair and a smile that could light up a room, and he never acted like you were an inconvenience. He was kind to my daughter, smiled at her, made her laugh, for over three years of her life.

He didn't live to see her fourth birthday.

When the pictures of the victims were published in the Orlando Sentinel, I was relieved - selfishly, guiltily - that I didn't recognize any of them. That by luck or fate, none of my friends had been there that night. I didn't recognize the boy who'd made me smile at least once a week. They'd used an old picture; he didn't look like that anymore. I didn't know until the next time I went to the CVS and saw the memorial.

I can't speak about him the way his friends or his family could. I didn't know him, not really. What I know is this: he was young, and he was kind, and he tried to put good into the world in small ways every day. What I know is this: we are poorer for his loss. We will never know what he could have been.

If you drive through downtown Orlando, there is still a memorial at Pulse. If you take 17-92 down to Colonial, you will see pride flags in front of all of the buildings and hanging from city lampposts, Orlando's "fuck you" to those who hate us. If you go to the Orlando Science Center, the walkway from the parking garage to the building is decorated with rainbow glass hearts, 49 in each color, to remember the 49 people lost. The City Beautiful remembers; the City Beautiful is angry, and doesn't care who knows it.

And if you go to the CVS on the corner of Edgewater and Maury, if you go to the back, in the pharmacy, there's still a posterboard memorial to Cory.

He is remembered. Not just by the people who knew him best, but even by those whose lives he just barely touched.

He was killed too young, and he didn't deserve it. He did nothing to incite the kind of hate that ended his life. None of them did. They will all be remembered.

I don't have any comforting words to share to the people of Colorado Springs in the wake of the Club Q shooting. The pain doesn't fucking fade; I wish I could say it did. It doesn't get better with time; it's not fucking fair, and it won't be any less unfair in a year or 10 years or 50. But I will say this: remember them. Keep them in your hearts. Let your pain and grief and fear become anger; let your anger become strength; let your strength build community. Come together and spit in the face of the bigots and cowards who want you dead. We've got a long fucking fight ahead of us; keep their faces in your mind to remind you why you fight.

USS Belleau Wood (CVL-24)

USS Belleau Wood, an 11,000-ton Independence class small aircraft carrier, was built at Camden, New Jersey. Begun as the light cruiser New Haven (CL-76), she was converted to a carrier before launching and was commissioned in March 1943.

Her original carrier hull number was CV-24, which was changed to CVL-24 in July 1943 at the time she arrived in the Pacific to join the war against Japan.

During the rest of 1943, Belleau Wood took part in raids on Tarawa and Wake Islands and the invasion

of the Gilbert Islands.

In the first half of 1944, Belleau Wood was part the carrier force that supported the Marshall Islands

operation, raided enemy positions throughout the Central Pacific and helped conquer Saipan. During

the Battle of the Philippine Sea, in mid-June, one of her Grumman TBF Avengers torpedoed the Japanese aircraft carrier Hiyo. Following a brief overhaul, she rejoined Task Force 58 for further operations to take Guam, the Palaus and Morotai, as well as raiding the Philippines, Okinawa and Formosa. In late October 1944, Belleau Wood participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. While operating off the Philippines on 30 October, she was hit aft by a Kamikaze suicide plane and set afire.

Badly damaged, with 92 of her crew killed or missing and 54 injured and also 12 of her aircraft destroyed, she had to return to the United States for repairs.

Belleau Wood returned to the Western Pacific war zone in February 1945, in time to help in raids on the Japanese Home Islands and support Marines on Iwo

Jima. The rest of the war was spent on further attacks on targets in and around Japan. Her planes participated in the massed aircraft flyover that followed the Formal Surrender of Japan on 2 September 1945. After supporting occupation operations into October, Belleau Wood transported U.S. service personnel back to the United States until early 1946. Generally inactive from then on, she was placed out of commission in January 1947.

Belleau Wood was reactivated in 1953 for loan to France. Under the name Bois Belleau, she served the

French Navy until 1960, when she was returned to U.S. custody and sold for scrapping.

UWS Independent Pharmacies Face Existential Threat From PBMs: Survey

Small Independent Pharmacies on the Upper West Side — and Citywide– say they face continued existential threats from what they claim is a Conflict-of-Interest-Ridden insurance reimbursement system that favors the big chain pharmacies.

In a recent survey of 176 independent pharmacies, released by the New York City Pharmacists Society, 92 percent of independent pharmacists say they were forced to turn away patients in the previous six months because insurance reimbursements they receive for many Brand-Name Drugs are actually below the cost they must pay for them. These include Eliquis, Entresto, Humira, Jardiance, Ozempic, Xarelto, Biktarvy, and Many Other Medications, often critical for managing chronic conditions and improving quality of life.

“The untold story is that there are so many people trying to find an independent pharmacy to fill a prescription, but they can’t because the pharmacies can’t afford to fill that prescription,” an Upper West Side independent pharmacist told us, anonymously for fear of being shut out of the reimbursement system. “Even though pharmacies must, by contract, fill all prescriptions they are sent, some independent pharmacies have found a way around it. There’s nothing to force them to order the medication,” he admitted. “Probably by now, you know which drugs you’re going to have to sell at a big loss. So, you probably don’t keep those around for that reason.”

What’s behind it? Independent pharmacies blame Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs). As we first reported over a year ago, PBMs are the controversial middlemen between insurers, patients, drug makers, and pharmacies. You may not have heard of PBMs, but if you have insurance, you have dealt with them. On behalf of insurance companies, they negotiate prices with drug companies and set the prices that pharmacies are paid by the insurers, and then what the pharmacies can charge their customers. This includes those with Private Insurance As Well As Medicare “Part D” Drug Plans.

In what seems like a conflict of interest, the top three PBMs are companies that also offer insurance and other healthcare services, including their own pharmacies that compete with independent drug stores. CVS Health owns PBM Caremark and Aetna Insurance, as well as CVS pharmacies, specialty mail-order pharmacies, and a physician’s group. United Health, the insurance giant, owns the mail order pharmacy OptumRx, specialty pharmacies, physician groups and express medical and surgical centers. The insurer Cigna owns the PBM Express Scripts and a specialty pharmacy.

In addition, the reason we could not get UWS pharmacists to speak to us on record about this situation is that there is a “gag clause” in all pharmacy contracts with the PBMs forbidding them to discuss the details of their reimbursements with their patients and customers, under penalty of losing their contracts

So how are our local independent pharmacies staying afloat? Ironically, some generic drugs have a greater profit margin. Additionally “some pharmacies do more [non-prescription] business in the front of the store,” the pharmacist told us. “For some of them, the owner’s working 80 hours a week, and he’s got a skeleton crew.” And some have shortened their days and business hours.

For many, says NYCPS spokesman Tom Corsillo, the neighborhood pharmacy is a lifeline. “People who use independent pharmacies tend to be the most vulnerable populations, folks who need to understand dosage and rely on the level of counsel independent pharmacies provide.”

There have been bipartisan calls for scrutiny and regulation of PBMs at a national level, including hearings on Capitol Hill. And just this last Friday, the Federal Trade Commission announced new action against the three largest PBMs — Caremark Rx, Express Scripts (ESI), and OptumRx — for engaging in what the FTC calls, in a release “anticompetitive and unfair rebating practices that have artificially inflated the list price of insulin drugs, impaired patients’ access to lower list price products, and shifted the cost of high insulin list prices to vulnerable patients.”

For its part, the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association, the PBM’s trade group, defends its members’ practices. In a statement emailed to WSR, PCMA spokesman Greg Lopes said, “PBMs recognize the vital role pharmacies play in creating access to prescription drugs for patients, especially community pharmacies in rural areas. There are unfortunately many factors for pharmacy closures, but blaming PBMs is not based on the facts,” and added, “It should be noted that in New York [State], between 2014 and 2024, the number of independent pharmacies actually grew from 2,470 to 3,058, a 23.8% increase.” But he could not specify in what part of the state that growth had occurred.

The NYC pharmacists’ survey taken in July says that in the year ahead, “96 percent of the respondents indicated they are very likely to stop carrying additional medications if reimbursement rates are further reduced as projected. Additionally, 96 percent of respondents anticipate having to lay off employees or reduce store hours to cope with these financial challenges.”

As for Friday’s FTC complaint, (which only applies to insulin medications) the FTC says it “seeks to put an end to the Big Three PBMs’ exploitative conduct and marks an important step in fixing a broken system—a fix that could ripple beyond the insulin market and restore healthy competition to drive down drug prices for consumers.”

What can concerned citizens do? Corsillo says “you have to contact your elected officials. Ultimately, they’re going to have to write new laws to rein in PBMs and they need to hear from their constituents that this is something they care about.”

В США обанкротилась последняя сеть проката DVD-дисков

Конец эпохи! В США банкротится последняя крупная сеть проката DVD-дисков Redbox. Ее владелец – компания Chicken Soup for the Soul – заявляет о долгах в размере $970 млн при активах $414 млн.

Интересно, что Chicken Soup for the Soul выкупила сеть проката Redbox у Apollo Global Management (вот уж там обрадовались) в 2022 году за $325 млн.

С тех пор на компанию подали в суд CVS, Sheetz, NBCUniversal, 828 Media Capital и ряд других продавцов за невыплаченные роялти и комиссионные. Кроме того, компания задолжала своим сотрудникам $3,5 млн в виде невыплаченной зарплаты и $2,24 млн в виде пособий по здоровью и социальному обеспечению.

Список кредиторов, требующих выплат от Chicken Soup, включает медиагигантов Universal Studios, Sony Pictures и BBC Studios Americas, а также розничные сети Walgreens и Walmart.

Гибель Redbox – это не только отражение широ��омасштабной корпоративной бесхозяйственности; она также свидетельствует о гибели технологии DVD. Киоски Redbox оставались последним напоминанием о предыдущей эре технологий.
