Laken had always been a workaholic, but that was just her nature. From an early age she knew that only with hard work you could achieve something great. That's why, while her peers were playing video games or going to parties, she was stuck in books. She believed that such nonsense as fun or romance only distracted from learning and didn’t bring anything useful. To people Laken was quite cold and abrupt, which is why she made virtually no friends, let alone any relationships. She also turned up her nose when her schoolmates bragged about the things they bought that she considered unnecessary; she put every money she earned (e.g. scholarships for excellent academic results; she also had a few part-time jobs in high school) into a deposit so that she could buy an apartment in the future. Her hard work paid off, because she got into one of the most prestigious universities in the world - Harvard. During her studies of course she got straight A's, ran two student clubs, took various courses, and engaged in volunteering - all this to have a perfect CV and find an ambitious and well-paid job in which she could constantly develop.

Everything was going great until suddenly the Covid-19 pandemic came and Laken's world collapsed nearly overnight. As the chief technophobe of her generation, she was unable to find her way in the new situation, because first the whole world seemed to stop - shops were closed, classes at university were not held, and then technically everyone switched to remote communication, working and learning. Moreover, it suddenly turned out that Laken had basically no one around her to whom she could turn and complain. Ok, she had parents and a brother, but they were far away in another state (Wisconsin, she lived in Boston due to her studies). She realized that she was terribly lonely. This is how Laken, always motivated and mentally strong, fell into depression. She spent all days at home, ate poorly and took a dean’s leave from the university so as not to have to deal with all those Zooms or Google Meets and somehow survive the difficult situation. She only went to the store occasionally; during one of these outings she walked into a deserted park, sat on a bench and started crying. All the previously hidden emotions came out. Suddenly she heard a quiet voice above her saying her name. It was Laken's friend from college - Claire, who couldn't believe that she was seeing Laken Dahl crying in front of her - the same Laken who had always been extremely strong, intimidating and believed to be a robot. Claire however said that it's okay to cry and that she had been going through a hard time too, because her beloved grandparents died of Covid. This made them both cry and then Laken began to speak. She had never said so many words at once before. She found comfort in Claire's eyes full of compassion and understanding. They promised each other that they would stay in touch and Claire gave Laken the contact details of her psychological clinic, where reportedly good specialists worked. Laken was full of doubts at first; she didn't like talking about her feelings with anyone, after all. However, she broke down and went to the clinic to give herself a chance to recover. Thanks to Claire's recommendation, Laken got a job as a hotel receptionist, thus gaining some source of money and an excuse to talk to people. Together they also signed up to volunteer at a local animal shelter.

Days, months, then a year passed. Gradually, the pandemic subsided and the world opened up again, and with it Laken. Thanks to therapy, as well as work and friendship with Claire, her well-being was back on track, but this time she decided to cut herself some slack. She realized that she didn't really know what she was living for. Ok - work, money, but in the end you don't live to work, you work to live, i.e. travel, start a family, make your dreams come true. But what exactly were her dreams? Now Laken is ready to get to know herself better, finally find a hobby and a sense of existence. She looks at the world way more positively than before. That's why she decided to do something different and crazy, which was to take part in Cornelia's BC. Will Cornelia help Laken learn the truth about herself?

Ok actually, I can't stop thinking about this so let's run down the doctors.

1 - Would avoid all interaction with the federation because of his hatred for rules

2 - Has interacted with the federation repeatedly, may or may not have been arrested by section 31, but hasn't been on any main series ships

3 - didn't interact with the federation, but only because he was grounded. Definitely accidentally gave away federation info to UNIT though

4 - has shown up on Picard's enterprise, repeatedly. Guinan loves him because every time he shows up it means that the captain will be in for drinks afterwards

5 - avoids the Federation but has shown up on DS9 a few times for Adric and Nyssa to have day trips. He has a tab at Quarks the length of a CVS receipt

6 - showed up on Archer's enterprise, immediately started a fight with Reed, left and swore never to again interact with the federation

7 - Hasn't interacted with the federation but mostly because he's busy causing problems for everyone else in the galaxy. He's well known as an enemy of the klingons

8 - was too busy on earth and then doing the time war

9 - Was there for the bell riots, trying to avoid causing problems, and following the defiant

10 - Has probably popped up on Ds9 a couple times, has gotten at least one companion arrested, gave Odo a headache

11 - the only one Brazen enough to visit the enterprise, visited Picard and almost immediately became besties with Data. Guinan was the only one that recognized him

12 - Despises the federation. Avoids them at all costs, but has accidentally run into the borg a few times

13 - is entirely too busy with the debacle that was all of her time as the doctor, but if given the chance would get on great with Kirk's crew

Hi there! As a fellow Star Trek obsessor and Doctor Who enjoyer, I have to ask: in what situation do you think the Doctor (can be any of their incarnations) would find themself on one of the main ships (or DS9)?

Bc to me, 11 holds enough chaos energy to show up on the Enterprise-D when Q arrives, but then switch to Disco with the time-loop shenanigans and then go straight to the Zindi Weapon incidents before turning back around to have a singsong with Pike's crew while helping O'Brien fix the stations many problems.

Ok so I have so many thoughts!!

So I actually don't think the doctor would be likely to show up during most of the like large Plot moments, only because he usually avoids fixed points, however, I think 10 had definitely visited the Bell Riots, both because it's a moment of large-scale chaos and because he probably got alerted to there being another time traveler in the area (like when he showed up during the London Blitz).

If we mean specifically on a ship, than I think 11 is definitely the only one brazen enough to show up on the enterprise, probably with Kirk's crew, and I think it would be one of those incidents that has to get ultra-classified because of all the potential ramifications of people knowing there's a time-traveller around despite the federation's laws.

Also, Section 31 is space UNIT, nobody can change my mind. I mean, secret quasi-governmental agency that deals with other species and time travel? UNIT just got a new name when the governments of the world became starfleet.

This was so fun to think about, especially because I'm rewatching 11's Era right now!

Tsurune Archery Classroom

So KyoAni has posted a Q&A with trivia about Japanese archery to the official Twitter account of the Tsurune anime in order to promote the movie, and I took the liberty to translate it. Please feel free to message me about possible corrections.

Q.: What is “tsurune”?

Narumiya Minato (CV. Uemura Yuuto): It’s the sound that the string makes as it hits the bow when an arrow is released. Even if it’s the same person shooting, the sound changes depending on their feelings and the situation at hand. The more skilled a person is, the cooler a sound they can produce.

Q.: What’s “target panic”?

Takehaya Seiya (CV. Ichikawa Aoi): Also called “archer’s disorder”, it’s the tendency of one’s hand to release the arrow on its own by accident when they’re holding the bow into position. It’s quite a problematic habit, and in Minato’s case… well, in the end, he has no choice but to fix it himself, so there’s nothing I can say to support him.

Q.: Is it best if the arrow hits the center of the target?

Yamanouchi Ryouhei (CV. Suzuki Ryouta): Even if it’s not in the center of the target, once it hits, you get a point! But it’s because the shooting posture is disturbed that it won’t hit the center, so it’s said that you can’t consider it a “good shot” just for hitting the target. There’s a lot to Japanese archery~!

Q.: How far is the target positioned?

Kisaragi Nanao (CV. Yano Shougo): 28 meters for close-distance targets! As for the reason behind such an odd number, it’s said that, in the past, back when bows were used as weapons, this would’ve been the distance between your party and the enemy party. Well, the theories vary, though!

Q.: What are you forbidden to do in an archery dojo?

Onogi Kaito (CV. Ishikawa Kaito): An archery dojo is a place for “training”. There’s lots of rules and detailed etiquette in order to maintain safety. For example, it’s outrageous to enter with shoes on!

Q.: What’s the “Shahou Hassetsu”?

Takigawa Masaki (CV. Asanuma Shintarou): Hard to explain what it is in one sentence, but well, I guess one should keep in mind, first of all, that it refers to the sequence of movements we have to perform from the moment we position our bows till we release the arrows. That’s the foundation of Japanese archery, which was created and polished by our predecessors, so it’s the most important of all.

Q.: Are the arrows different for each person?

Minato: People pick their archery equipment in accordance to their height, physique and skill. I use aluminum arrows but Masa-san uses bamboo arrows. There are many other types of arrows, even ones with actual black eager feathers on them.

Q.: What’s a “team competition”?

Seiya: It’s a match where a certain number of people lines up and draws the bow to compete against the same number of people.

For five-people teams, we call the first person the “oomae”, the second, “niteki”, the third, “naka”, the fourth, “yonteki” and the last, “ochi”. The names differ depending on the place and school, though.

Each of us has a role, so we do our best together in aiming for the best shots.

Q.: What are the “ranks” and “dan” titles of Japanese archery?

Fujiwara Shuu (CV. Ono Kenshou): I guess they’re something like a classification of the abilities related to Japanese archery that you can get through an examination. There are three titles - Renshi, Kyoushi and Hanshi - and mine and Minato’s mentor, Saionji-sensei, holds the title of “seventh-dan Kyoushi”.

Q.: What’s “Princess Cheer”?

Sase Daigo (CV. Miyazaki Yuu): It’s a very popular five-people idol group! Above all, the center, Noririn, has an exceptional sense for everything, like dancing, singing and talking, so she’s been shining ever since her debut - actually, she’s been shining even back when she was an indie artist and lighting up the way for me… She’s a very popular idol but only with the people who know about her at the moment, yet there’s something to keep an eye for in the way she improves her skills without sparing any efforts and I’ve been encouraged by that many times, so I don’t know how many times I’ve thought things like “I’m glad I met Noririn” or “I’m glad Noririn decided to become an idol”! No matter how many hundreds of people she shakes hands with at meet-and-greets, she never shows any signs of being tired, and even if you go back into the line over and over again, Noririn welcomes you with her smile unchanged!!!!

Q.: How do you cheer during a match?

Nanao: If it’s baseball, people will shout things like, “Go for it!”, but in Japanese archery, cheering aloud is generally not good. Archery matches aren’t just about winning or losing, that’s why. When you hit the target, the people sitting on the stands will say, “Good one!”. Unique, ain’t it?

Q.: What’s a “kaichuu”?

Minato: It’s when all of your arrows hit the target. It’s not an easy feat to pull, so when someone manages to achieve a kaichuu, the viewers will show respect by applauding them.

Q.: What does “shoot correctly, hit correctly” mean?

Masaki: That’s a difficult question. It means that “a correct shot is sure to hit the target”, but it’s not as easy as it sounds. It’s a story with no end, which begins when you mature as an archer and perform “correct shooting” for the first time.

Well, that’s what mastering archery is about. We’ve got no choice but to keep studying hard every day, so let’s do our best, yeah?

The only ones who yet suspect that to be a false impression of clumsiness are his mates in the rogues' guild, and even then only a few.

Moonlighting with them as Lucky Seven, he behaves so differently that most people who know about him think Lucky Seven is actually Sevah'wo's identical twin. Perhaps that's more accurate speculation than anyone realizes…
