Wing Girls: An early example of an all female transforming hero team
We've all heard the take that in 1992 Sailor Moon is the first anime to focus on an all-female super heroine show akin to "Super Sentei" or "Saint Seiya", aimed at girls, and that is true. But I want to talk about another very early example I've never seen mentioned: The Wing Girls, a plot element that shows up about midway of the 1984 shonen anime "Yume Senshi Wingman"
Yume Senshi Wingman is a show very aimed at teenage boys. It focuses on Hirono Kenta, a huge tokusatsu nerd with his own hero persona, Wingman. He's chosen and gifted with the Dream Note that can make anything he draws in it come true so he can become Wingman for real and defeat and evil organization from taking over his world. Another big point about Wingman is it's focus on love triangles and fanservice, between Kenta's ladylike classmate Miku and the more bold and flirtatious Aoi, who is a resident from the world that the Dream Note came from
The opening visually explains I think what kind of dynamic they were going for here: (also if nothing else, the music in this show is really good)
youtube
In episode 33, Airing on November 13, 1984 - Kenta and his classmates are visiting a shoot of a liveaction henshin hero episode. Agents from the evil organization are rumored to be part of the cast and Kenta's not able to focus his attention on it, so the female classmates who know his secret are given their own special forms in case something goes wrong and they need to step in
Enter the Wing Girls, consisting of Aoi, Miku, along with his other classmates Momoko and Kumiko
More of a backup squad to Wingman himself, they're still given similar abilities to instantly change forms with the power of the dream note and enhanced physical abilities for punching and kicking
They make a few other appearances throughout the show but this is their big solo moment. They even get their own theme song on one of the drama CDs, and figure merch in 2009.
I just think they're a neat little part of magical girl history.
Side mg history in case someone brings it up:
The idea of female super-hero magical girls as main characters goes as far back as the early 1970s with "Suki! Suki! Majo-sensei" and "Cutey Honey" and continues to sporadically appear through the decades. But these only focus on one heroine compared to an entire team.
Another early cited example of a mg team is the Studio Pierrot crossover special "Majokko Club Quartet: Alien X from A Zone" a direct-to-video special from 1987 that shows the heroines from Pierrot's line of magical girls: Creamy Mami, Magical Emi, Fairy Persia and Pastel Yumi, team up against alien invaders and parodies sci-fi tokusatsu tropes in the process. While the original TV series are all aimed at children, and the special is still within the realm of SFW, I would argue this OVA is more aimed at adult fans of the series due to its content and release format. So that's why I tend to not think of it on the same level as Sailor Moon.
#yume senshi wingman#80's anime#magical girl chat#magical girls#sidenote: i watched this episode in french because that's all I could find :'D so sorry if the episode notes are very..uh. not good.

And now, for the opposite: which ones are your MOST faves?
Hanadera "Cure Grace" Nodoka (I have several fave Cures in rotation, but this one's ULTRA special to me);
Luz Noceda;
Eclipsa Butterfly (she actually had a child with a giant monster king; I have nothing but immense respect for her);
Garnet (+ Amethyst, Bismuth, Peridot, Spinel, any other Gem character that deserved better);
Adrien "Chat Noir" Agreste (I know he's not the best, but he's treated like garbage by the writers, and I gravitate towards the underdog, or rather, the underCAT);
Twilight Sparkle (+ Pinkie Pie, Sunset Shimmer);
Harukaze Doremi (+ Fujiwara Hazuki);
Tsukino "Sailor Moon" Usagi (+ Kino "Sailor Jupiter" Makoto);
Kisaragi "Cutey Honey" Honey (specially her Re:Cutey Honey incarnation);
Princess Peach (she totally counts, speacially after Princess Peach Showtime!);
Stella;
Bee;
Fionna Campbell;
Marcy Wu;
Auriana;
Bubbles Utonium (+ her anime self, Gotokuji "Rolling Bubbles" Miyako);
Bu Ling "Mew Pudding" Huang;
Tomoe Mami (+ Miki Sayaka and Kaname Madoka);
Tenkawa "Magia Sulfur" Kaoruko (would like her a lot more if the series wasn't like THAT);
Kagari "Akko" Atsuko;
Hakone "Battle Lover Scarlet" Yumoto (deserved to be in a better anime series, one that doesn't fetshizes mlm and boys in general).
And that's all the faves I could pull out from memory.

COMING SOON - ANIME UPDATE V3
“V3″ in this case stands for “Version 3″. I did the V1 series of posts from late 2019 to the end of 2021, then did the V2 posts in 2022 and 2023. Time for another shake-up, once more before the last time.
Vinland Saga S2 will continue with its second half, and once I'm done with it, and once I'm done with it, the newly revived Kimi ni Todoke will be taking its place, itself to be followed by Vision of Escaflowne once I'm done with it.
Hunter x Hunter will continue to the end this year, and once I'm finally done with it, Fullmetal Alchemist will be taking its place.
SHUFFLE! will be a new anime I start up, and along with it will soon come the 13 episode AIR. Jun Maeda's prototype for CLANNAD, Kanon, would be the most likely to take its place afterwards.
Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works draws to a close, soon to be replaced by The Case Files Of Lord El Meloi II.
Konosuba will be taking over from Re:ZERO (talk about whiplash!), and once its done, its place will be taken by Black Cat.
Symphogear XV will finish off the Symphogear series, and once that's done, K-On!! will be taking its place.
Eureka Seven will continue through the year, and once I'm done with it, I'll finally look back to the Gundam franchise with Gundam Wing.
Gintama will be returning as well. with me finally getting closer towards the really good parts.
EXTRAs that I intend to also give watches to from now to perpetuity: A Certain Scientific Railgun, Akame Ga Kill, Akiba Maid Wars, Attack On Titan, Azumanga Daioh, Bakugan Battle Brawlers, Baccano, Berserk, Black Butler, Bloom Into You, Blue Exorcist, BNA: Brand New Animal, Bungo Stray Dogs, Captain Earth, Chainsaw Man, Code Geass R2, Cutey Honey, D-Gray Man, Date A Live, Demon Slayer, Digimon anime, Dragon Ball anime, Durarara, Full Metal Panic, Gabriel Drop Out, Great Pretender, Gundam & Macross anime, Gurren Lagann, Haruhi Suzumiya, Horimiya, Inuyasha, Kill La Kill, Little Busters, Little Witch Academia, Made In Abyss, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, Marmalade Boy, Megaman NT Warrior, Monster, Moriarty The Patriot, My Hero Academia, My Next Life As Villaness, Nadia: The Secret Of Blue Water, Nichijou, Non Non Biyori, Odd Taxi, One Punch Man, Ouran High School Host Club, Persona The Animation, Pokemon anime, Pretty Cure, Princess Jellyfish, Puella Magi, Ranma 1/2, Rewrite, RWBY, Rurouni Kenshin, Sakugan, Shadows House, Shaman King, Shikimori's Not Just A Cutie, Slime Taoshite 300-Nen, Soul Eater, Steins;Gate, SSSS Dynazenon, Tales of the Abyss The Animation, Tenchi Muyo, Tiger & Bunny, Trigun, The Demon Girl Next Door, The Girl Who Leapt Through Space, The Pet Girl Of Sakurasou, The Rising Of The Shield Hero, The World Ends With You Animation, Yuna Yuki Is A Hero, and likely plenty of others that might come my way, old and new, rewatches included.

A family of Protagonists by Cliffather Via Flickr: Warning! WALL OF TEXT!
My M.C. William & family in Dynasty Warriors8empires1040 L to R: Safire(5th child twin of Ishaq), Berney(3rd child of Wilma Sue), Kedward(2nd child), Will Jr(1st born), William(father), Wilma Sue(mother), Wilona(Will Jr's wife), youngest child Justin and Ishaq(4th child twin of Safire) They are from the royal bloodline of their Patriarch primogenitor, Wildestaar Savyer www.flickr.com/photos/cliffather/26353123024/in/dateposted/. See the their Antagonist family here: www.flickr.com/photos/cliffather/26399078564/in/dateposted/ UPDATED!
I planned back in the '80s for Wilma Sue(mother) to have two kids, Will Jr & Kedward, after watching "Spiderman & his Amazing friends' in my 'tweens, her children's list started to get larger.
The reason why I decided she would have a lot of boys was because of the '80s mindset of MEN being superheroes. Please remember most '70s/'80's CARTOONS had one or no superheroine with SEVERAL male superheroes: Superfriends( not including the made for tv female characters), Silverhawks. Tarzan. The Herculoids, Dangermouse, The Flying House, Superbook, Thundarr the Barbarian, "Teen Force" of SpaceStars, SINBAD JR. AND HIS MAGIC BELT,
Popeye - The Sailor-man(The All-New Popeye Hour), Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids(Brown Hornet), He-man ad the Masters of the Universe, Smurfs(until season5), Blue Falcon & Dynomutt, Jabberjaw (reruns limited viewing), Wacky Races(reruns limited viewing), Speed Buggy( reruns limited viewing), Batman and Robin(animated), The New Adventures of Zorro(animated), Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, the Centurions(tv), Space Ghost, Blackstar, Battle of the Planets, Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, StarBlazers, The Transformers, and LIVE-ACTION: Ambassador Magma (aka SPACE GIANTS).
First, THANKS to the '80s Jem and the Holograms, Thundercats, Scooby-Doo(re-runs), Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels, Josie and the Pussycats(reruns), The Mighty Orbots, Pound Puppies, Pole Position ('84 TV series), Dungeons & Dragons('80s cartoon), The ROBOTECH series (My middle brother's quest to collect the complete series on VHS started his buying Anime in the'90s) The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show(Re-runs the inspiration for Tyra's & Wordsworth's Time travel stories), Laff-A-Lympics, Shirt Tales, Bionic Six, Tiger Sharks, GI Joe, and She-Ra was one part of my female inspiration.
Second, WATCHING ANIME during the '90s such as Battle Angel Alita, Nuku Nuku, Armitage III, TENCHI MUYO{started my anime collection in '95 to aid my middle brother anime collecting by getting the other anime series he couldn't get}, Hyper Police, Magic User's Club, Devil Hunter Yohko, Vampire Princess Miyu, Genocyber, Galaxy Fraulein Yuna, Gunbuster, Neo Ranga, 801 T.T.S. Airbats, Luna Varga, Maris the chojo, Sukeban Deka, Bubblegum Crisis, Battle Athletes, Battle Skipper, Wanna-Be's, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Iczer one/reborn, metal fighter Miku, Patlabor(My catgirl /AD&D character is named after the main character).
Sailormoon(bootleg), Magical Knights Rayearth, MOLDIVER, Phantom Quest, Project A-ko, Burn Up W, Super Dimension Century Orguss, You're Under Arrest, Oh my Goddess, The Dirty Pair, Hyperdolls, Cardcaptor Sakura(bootleg), Ghost in the Shell(The ORIGINAL ANIME movie), 3x3 Eyes, GALL FORCE, Silent Möbius(series), Virgin Fleet, Key - the metal idol, Saber Marionette J, El hazard, SLAYERS, Cutey Honey, Ayane's High Kick, Sakura Wars, Sol Bianca, Dangaio and Gunsmith cats where females were the main character or main action characters despite some of these anime having "fan service" in them(Anime WAS aimed at young males btw) was the second part of female influence. www.flickr.com/photos/cliffather/1286716235/in/dateposted/
Lastly, Streetfighter II's CHUN-LI, KOF's Athena Asamiya(Mai Shiranui), Soul blade/Calibur's Sophitia (Cassandra) Alexandra, Darkstalkers' Felicia, Samurai Shodown's Charlotte, Dead or alive's Kasumi, Waku Waku 7(import) Arina Makihara, Phantasy Star(series), Rival Schools' Hinata Wakaba & Kyoko Minazuki, Fighting Viper's Grace, Battle Arena Toshinden's Sofia, and World Heroes' Jeanne D'Arc were the third part & great influence (some of my OC's personalities or names comes from them)
Note; Unlike the 2010s' SJW's influenced shows/movies/games, they didn't insult/weaken male characters or make the female characters look/act like men. Because of these shows, games & *mostly ANIME* I started creating MORE females and improving my created FEMALE characters.

Here in Italy the Magical Girl genre has always been big (as far I know, two of the earliest non-Japanese entries in the genre are W.I.T.C.H. and Winx Club, both from Italy). And I recently noticed something irksome: the variety in the genre has fallen, with most if not all recent series being about teenaged or preteen girls being given powers and a transformation to fight the forces of evil. And the fact many of those reading will be wondering what I’m talking about is exactly the problem:
What is the Magical Girl genre about, then? Exactly that: the protagonist is a girl (or close enough, more about that later) that has magic, or at least appears to do so. It usually involves an outside entity, often in the form of the mascot animal, to provide said magic and said magic involving a transformation, but not necessarily. For a few examples, Magical Star Magical Emi has the protagonist using her powers and transformation as a stage magician (she’s from a family of stage magicians but felt she had not talent, so when the mascot came by she jumped on it), Creamy Mami has the protagonist become an idol (the first magical idol singer) to try and win over an older childhood friend, Kaitou Saint Tail has the protagonist as a stage magician (though one so good to raise questions. She even does the transformation sequence in real time, and has trouble toning it down) that administers justice by being a phantom thief (and the police eventually started treating her theft warnings as a reason to investigate her soon-to-be victim), the protagonist of Tokimeki Tonight has powers because her family is from the magic world and her parents are a vampire and a werewolf who don’t want a muggle as a son in law (in fact it’s illegal), Himitsu no Akko-chan, the original Magical Girl manga (though not the first to be animated), has the protagonist being given a magic compact that allows her to turn in other people and no mascot, and Sally the Witch (the first Magical Girl anime) is a slice of life series with the protagonist being the preteen princess of the Land of Magic that has ran away from home out of boredom. The Magical Girl Warrior subgenre, is a much later development.
Many will cite the original Cutey Honey as the start of the genre, or at least the Magical Girl Warrior subgenre. Leaving aside that both Akko-Chan and Sally the Witch are from the 1960s and Cutey Honey first appeared in 1973, I’m sorry to say Cutey Honey is only a Magical Girl series retroactively: Honey was created as a cyborg, and only after the Magical Girl Warrior subgenre started people noticed the similarities (in fact she’s one of the inspirations for the original Magical Girl warrior), and she retroactively became one.
When and where did the Magical Girl Warrior subgenre start, then? It started on August 3 1991 on the magazine RunRun, when Takeuchi Naoko published the one-shot titled Codename: Sailor V. Yep, Sailor Moon wasn’t the first, Sailor Venus predates her and inspired her even in real life (and Sailor Venus apparently holds a grudge about people forgetting who started the whole thing). The inspirations, aside for the Magical Girls, are Cutey Honey, the various Tokusatsu series, and a volleyball manga.
If we want to be technical, the original She-Ra: Princess of Power from Filmation could be the first Magical Girl Warrior... But in the original 1985 series she’s a young adult.
Also, I know that in the past I called Chat Noir a magical girl even if he’s a boy. We’re also in the 2020s, he fulfills every other trope about magical girls, is either the co-protagonist or the main comprimary in a Magical Girl Warrior series, and he’s nowhere near as mysterious enough to be a Mysterious Protector. Unless he comes out of the screen and says otherwise, he’s a magical girl and we should be grateful for it, as few people in that show have the self-control and innate goodness to handle the Power of Destruction and not wipe all their enemies out.
Sorry for the rant, but... Where are the series with magical girls just doing their thing with magic rather than having to fight the forces of evil in place of the adults? I miss them.

two boys from a Superhero webcomic concept I’ve been developing as long as I’ve been on the internet(signature is my old NSFW handle because I’ve decided to make that my permanent art handle online), they are based on many characters but their civilian looks here are Inspired by Honey Kisaragi and Natsuko Aki from Cutey Honey
the Afro-Latino boy is Rico Martinez, a boy with multiple hero forms he can slide through each with their own personalities, powers, hairstyles and color palates,
his white boyfriend is Gerald Towers, who is basically equal parts Mako mankanshoku, C-ko, Natsuko Aki, and Katsuki bakugo mixed, he has the ability to generate explosions as Bakugo does

What makes you consider Akuma-kun a Magical Boy?
Like I said, there isn't a lot about Akuma-kun, but here's what I've discovered so far:
Umoregi "Akuma-kun" Shingo, is a boy with a fascination towards the supernatural and an extensive knowledge of demonic figures. When he meets a man by the name of Faust, he discovers that he's the reincarnation of a powerful figure simply known as "The Messiah", and decides to use these new powers for good, harnessing the power of demons to do so.
Shingo has 12 subordinates at his disposal, a magic ocarina known as the Solomon Flute, and can summon them by chanting this spell: "Elohim Essaim, frugativi et appelavi" (french for "Elohim Essaim, I seek and I appeal").
As you can understand, this series wasn't exclusive only to japanese culture, but rather it mentioned several other myths and legends.
Oh, and in the spirit of this here blog, I will also mention that its staff has previously worked on random Magical Girl installments before:
Junichi Sato* (chief director): Sailor Moon, Prétear, Fushigiboshi no Futagohime, Princess Tutu, Hugtto PreCure (unfortunately), Waccha PriMagi!, Magic User's Club, Dream Crayon Kingdom, Ojamajo Doremi;
Fumitoshi Oizaki (co-director): Prétear, Etotama, Re-Cutey Honey;
Hiroshi Ōnogi (writer): Earth Maiden Arjuna, Magical Play, Shugo Chara!! Doki.
*Sato has previously worked as a director on the '89 anime incarnation of Akuma-kun, so this is a place of familiarity to him.
