Healthy food diet tips for hockey players in australia.
Tumblr media
Hockey (also known as field hockey internationally) is a team-based sport played in two 35-minute halves with 10 players on the field and one player in the goals at any one time, with a short break at half-time.
About Hockey
Field hockey is a sport that is played extensively by both men and women throughout Australia and overseas. It is played at both amateur and professional levels. Hockey is a team sport played between two teams. Traditionally a team consists of 10 players plus 1 goal keeper with up to 7 substitutes permitted per team. There are also some newer formats of the game that are played with much fewer players (e.g. Hockey 5s which is played with only 5 players per team).
Match play lasts for 70 minutes and consist of two 35- minute halves plus a short break at half time. In some major international tournaments such as the Olympics, matches are played in four 15-minute quarters. Players can be substituted as many times as desired during a game and play is not stopped for substitutions. Some teams will substitute players up to 70 times in a single match. These substitutions are used give players brief periods of rest as hockey is a fast paced sport with high intensity sprints alongside passing, scoring and tackling.
Hockey is generally played in the winter months, with elite athletes spending the off-season in training or at other competitions. Training sessions typically involve strength and conditioning, technique and match preparation. In season, matches are played most weekends and athletes may have to travel locally, interstate or overseas for competitions. Competitions are also played in tournament format over several days.
Hockey requires a great deal of endurance, strength, speed and agility. Therefore, hockey players will use both aerobic and anaerobic energy systems. Players are also required to think tactically, have fast reaction time and display tactical and technical ball movement skills for the duration of the game.
Because of these characteristics, energy demands can be high, particularly in tournament settings where several games may be played over a number of days. There is the potential for high levels of fluid loss and injuries making nutrition and hydration strategies essential for optimising performance of players at all levels.
Training diet
Due to the high intensity, physically demanding nature of the sport, hockey players need a nutrient rich diet to optimise performance at training and promote recovery between sessions. A hockey player’s diet should be based around lean proteins for muscle repair and recovery and appropriately timed carbohydrate for fuel. In addition, fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and dairy foods provide important vitamins and minerals, along with some healthy fats.
Individual nutrition requirements will be determined by training load, specific athlete needs, training goals, body composition goals, health and adjustment for growth in younger athletes. Junior hockey players also need to meet the nutrition needs of growth and development.
Fluid needs
Hockey is a fast moving game that requires high-intensity running, fast decision-making and skill. Studies have shown that dehydration can negatively impact shooting accuracy, speed, agility concentration and coordination.
Due to the high intensity, stop/start style of the matches, sweat rates can be high. The temperature and humidity will also play a part in the players fluid needs. Fluid needs will depend on individual fluid losses, which vary between players depending on individual sweat rate.
To maintain good hydration levels, players should be encouraged to drink fluid before, during and after a hockey match. Since hockey is a winter sport, on cold days, players may need prompting to drink as they may not feel the need to replace fluid losses in cooler weather. In most situations, water is sufficient to replace fluid losses, however, during matches, sports drinks can be a good option as they provide carbohydrates to fuel the body, fluid and electrolytes simultaneously.
In tournament settings, it is important to replace fluid losses after a match to avoid starting subsequent matches dehydrated. An Accredited Sports Dietitian can work with players to determine their individual sweat losses and a fluid plan to ensure they start all matches appropriately hydrated.
Eating before competition
It’s important to start matches well fuelled. The timing of the pre-game meal will depend on the start time of the match, which can vary from morning to late in the evening depending on the level of the athlete. Each athlete is different, but players will often eat a pre-game meal around 3 to 4 hours before the start of the match. This meal should contain some carbohydrate for fuel as well as some fluids for hydration.
Some suitable pre-match meal ideas can include:
Wrap or sandwich with chicken and salad
Bowl of muesli with yoghurt and berries
Pasta with beef mince in tomato-based sauce
Chicken stir-fry with rice or noodles
Many players will also have an additional small snack 1-2 hours prior to the game. This is often something light that is rich in carbohydrate but relatively low in fat and fibre so it is easy to digest.
Some suitable pre-match snack ideas include:
Yoghurt with fruit salad
Banana and a handful of almonds
Peanut butter on rice cakes
Toast with vegemite
Players who are nervous, or struggle with a poor appetite before matches, may find liquid carbohydrate options such as a fruit smoothie more appealing and easy to eat.
Eating and drinking during competition
There is only a brief opportunity to eat and drink at half time. There is also extra opportunity to rehydrate and top up fuel stores during substitutions.
While water is the priority fluid during training and for hydration during the day, and in most matches, sports or electrolyte drinks may be useful during a game for players with high energy requirements or heavy fluid losses as they can provide carbohydrates as well as electrolytes.
During tournament settings it is important to keep fuel levels topped up over the day to prevent fatigue. Light, easy to digest carbohydrate rich snacks such as muesli bars, fresh fruit, flavoured milk and simple sandwiches are all good options for refuelling between matches. Trialling nutrition strategies during training or practice matches will help determine the best plan for each player.
Recovery
There are three rules to consider with recovery nutrition:
Refuel muscle glycogen (carbohydrate stores)
Repair muscle (for function & development)
Rehydrate (replace fluids lost through sweat)
Recovery meals and snacks should contain carbohydrate (fuel), some protein (for muscle repair and development) and plenty of fluids and electrolytes to replace sweat losses. A recovery meal or snack should be consumed soon after exercise period, remembering that recovery nutrition extends well beyond the initial hours after the match, particularly when the next training session or game is the next day. Fluids (mainly water) should also be consumed, based on estimated losses.
Some recovery food suggestions include:
Ham, avocado and salad sandwich
Dairy-based fruit smoothie
Tofu and vegetable curry with rice
Poached eggs with baked beans
Grilled salmon with baked potatoes and salad

Top 12 Hockey Skills To Master
Tumblr media
Hockey Australia is an organisation that formed from the merger of the Australian Hockey Association and Women's Hockey Australia in 2000. It is the national body responsible for the promotion, development and administration of field hockey in Australia.
I’m often asked which field hockey skills players should focus on but it often depends on a number of factors such as your current level, your position, your strengths, weaknesses, etc.
However, I decided to come up with a list of the top 10 field hockey skills that I think are most useful for the majority of modern day field hockey players to focus on.
The order in which you develop these skills will depend on various factors, but I encourage you to choose just 1-2 at a time so that you start to notice an improvement.
1: First Touch (Trapping)
Your first touch or “trapping” is the ability to receive the ball under control and head in the direction of where the space is.
A good first touch will give you more time to look up to see what to do next. It will help to pre-scan before you get the ball to identify where the space is for your next move.
For example you could use hard hands to receive into space in front of you or it could be using soft hands to allow the ball across your body.
You could also move the ball to the left or right of your player with your first touch to create space and receive balls into space (front side and upright reverse).
It is also worth improving your ability to trap bouncing balls off both your right and left foot and balls into space (upright reverse).
I highly recommend you work on your ability to receive the ball from many different positions (static, moving, feet facing forward, back to goal, from left side, from right side, etc).
2: Hit
This is a skill which a lot of players struggle to master because there are so many factors to consider such as foot position, ball position, head position, body position, hip rotation, the swing, grip, wrist action, follow through, etc.
Hitting is useful for all positions:
For defenders it could be hitting hard passes through a press
For midfielders it could be crossing the ball into the circle
For strikers (forwards) it could be to shoot at goal.
3: Leading & Positioning
Players need to be able get into good positions if they want to receive the ball. Leading well allows you to have more time on the ball and to make better decisions. There are various types of leads you can make and can vary depending upon your position.
Timing is a crucial factor to consider as a great lead is not great unless your timing is spot on. Great leading comes from understanding the player on the ball as well as your ability to anticipate what is going to happen next.
It’s also important to mention re-leading because if the ball doesn’t come to you, you need to re-lead to create space for someone else. This also makes it harder for defenders.
4: Passing
Good plays come from accurate passing so it is a crucial aspect to cover. This point could be a number of different skills which also depends on the position you play.
For example:
A defender may want to focus on their fake slapping or overheads.
A midfielder may want to work on passing off the right foot or lifted passes into space.
A striker may want to work on 2 v 1’s or one-touch passing.
5: Learn To Jam
Formerly a rare power play strategy, "jam" plays are now commonplace. Attacking teams rush in front of the net from all angles while attempting to keep the puck moving to rotating pivot men, hoping to free up an open man one-on-one against the goaltender. The strategy is risky because there is often no one back in time to prevent a short-handed rush if the puck squirts away from the corners or behind the net.
6: One Hand Can Help
"Try to keep one hand on the stick as much as possible," says Steve Duchesne. "I like to use my stick a lot in tight situations to take the puck from the forward or intercept a pass. Freeing one hand from the stick also really helps my balance and my speed because I can extend both my legs and arms when I am skating. Also, like most other defenseman, I like to use the crossover a lot when going backwards. But crossing over too much can get you burned because a smart forward will watch your feet and when you crossover one way he goes the other direction and it can be very hard to untangle your feet. So when the forward is near it is better to go straight backwards and let him make the first move."
7: Flat stick tackle
All players should be able to make a clean flat stick tackle, including forwards and even goalkeepers. Bad tackles are normally made when you get caught in a bad position or are mis-timed.
Poor body position, being caught flat footed, committing too early are all examples of things that can lead to making bad tackles which results in free hits in dangerous positions or being carded and temporarily suspended from the game.
You may want to channel a player into a less dangerous area before making a tackle. You can do this by keeping your stick down and forcing them out wide by positioning yourself on the inside closing off the direct route to goal.
The key in defence is patience and waiting for the right time to make your tackle.
8: Jab / Poke
The jab or poke tackle is one of the most under used skills which applies to all positions whether it is a striker or midfielder tracking back or a defender trying to break down an attack.
The aim of the jab tackle is to put the player on the ball under pressure, change the direction of the ball or show them perceived space.
Jabbing is a great way to force the opposition into areas of the field which are less dangerous and make it difficult for them to get through.
You don’t have to always jab directly at the ball, you could jab next to the ball to close down the space and force the opposition to go one way. It can also used to set a player up for a front stick tackle.
9: Tomahawk / Reverse
Although it can be a difficult skill to master, it is definitely a skill worth practicing especially if you play on the left hand side.
Defenders can use the tomahawk to clear balls down the line, midfielders could use it to cross the ball in and strikers to shoot at goal from various angles.
An alternative players could use to pass from their reverse side is the reverse slide. It’s not as powerful as the tomahawk but can be used to get a pass away quickly. You use a hands apart grip and slice the ball on the edge of your stick using a short and low backswing.
10: V Drag
The V drag (or dummy) is one of the most essential elimination skills and is useful for most positions, whether you’re:
A defender trying to get out of a tight situation under pressure
A midfielder looking to break the line to create attacking opportunities or
A striker looking for a bit of space to get a shot away.
It is important that you pull the ball back (like a V movement) before moving forward to keep the ball out of the defenders reach. Then burst forward quickly at an angle to beat the defender, either left or right of them.
11: 3D skills
Many defenders say that one of the hardest things to defend is when players use 3D skills.
Using a controlled lift is very effective to use against players who like to make flat stick tackles.
Once you use 3D skills, defenders will start to think more about how to approach you next time which could leave some doubt and indecision in their mind. There are several variations, but learning a few basics lifts and jinks should do the trick.
12: Deception
Although this one is not technically a skill, it is an aspect which is important to develop if you want to pull off a lot of the skills mentioned above.
If you can be deceptive about what you are going to do, it makes it harder for the opposition and will give you more space and time on the ball.
For example if you are going to do an elimination skill then simply by dropping your shoulder one way before you change direction, you are more likely to convince the player that you are going that way, causing them to step off balance.
I chose these skills based on what we feel gives you the best value for your time.
Don’t spend too much time on the fancy skills you may never use and don’t make things more complicated than they need to be.
