Australian Baseball Hall of Famers
David Nilsson
Tumblr media
David Wayne Nilsson is an Australian retired professional baseball catcher and current manager of the Australia national baseball team and the Brisbane Bandits. David was born on 14 December 1969. He played for Major League Baseball's Milwaukee Brewers from 1992 to 1999 and was an All-Star in 1999, becoming the first Australian player to appear in an All-Star game. He ended his Major League career on 3 October 1999 with 837 games played, 789 hits, 105 home runs and a .284 career batting average.
Nilsson became a free agent in the offseason following 1999 but opted not to sign with any MLB teams because of his desire to play for Australia in the 2000 Olympics. He was widely applauded for this move as he was turning down big money to represent his country, something very rarely seen in baseball. Before leaving the US, he had been Australia's second highest earning sportsman behind Greg Norman, according to the Business Review Weekly.
Nilsson previously played for the Brisbane Bandits and Melbourne Reds in the previous carnation of the Australian Baseball League where he holds the record for all time batting average (.351) and all time slugging average (.661). His brothers Gary, Bob and Ron also played in the competition. He also played in the Japanese NPB and Italian Serie A. He went on to also represent Australia in the 2004 Olympics where they won a historic silver medal, and also represented his country in the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006. He spent one season as manager with the Brisbane Bandits during the 2010–11 Australian Baseball League season, before returning to become the incumbent manager from 2014 to 2015. In 2018 he succeeded Jon Deeble as the Australian national baseball team manager.
Nilsson represented Australia at the Olympics in 2000 and 2004 and has been involved in the strategic direction of the sport in Australia.
In 2018, he was named as one of the Queensland Greats by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk in a ceremony at the Queensland Art Gallery on 8 June 2018.
Nilsson was made a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours in recognition of his "service to baseball as a player, coach and mentor"
 Glenn Williams
Tumblr media
Glenn David Williams is a retired third baseman from Australia, who played in the Minnesota Twins organization. Glenn was born on 18 July 1977 in Gosford, New South Wales. He played in Major League Baseball for the Twins during the 2005 season. He was a member of the team that won the silver medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Williams currently has a 13-game hitting streak, as he has a hit in every game that he has played in while in the major leagues.
Glenn is the elder of two children. His father Gary Williams has been heavily involved in the development of baseball in Australia. Both Gary and Glenn Williams have represented their native Australia in international baseball competitions.
In 1993, as a 16-year-old, Glenn signed a lucrative free agent contract with the Atlanta Braves for an estimated 1.3 million Australian dollars. Since that time, Glenn has played baseball for the minor league affiliates of the Atlanta Braves, Toronto Blue Jays, and Minnesota Twins.
After spending over 10 years in the minor leagues, Glenn made his major league debut with the Minnesota Twins during the 2005 season. In 2007, Glenn played for the Minnesota Twins Triple-A affiliate team, the Rochester Red Wings.
On 19 August 2010 Glenn was announced as manager for the Australian Baseball League foundation club Sydney Blue Sox in their inaugural 2010–11 season.
 Craig Shipley
Tumblr media
Craig Barry Shipley is an Australian-born executive and former player in Major League Baseball. Craig was born on 7 January 1963 in Parramatta, New South Wales. On 16 November 2012, he was appointed special assistant to Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers.
As a player, he was an infielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1986–87), New York Mets (1989), San Diego Padres (1991–94 and 1996–97), Houston Astros (1995) and Anaheim Angels (1998). He played collegiately at the University of Alabama. Shipley batted and threw right-handed; he stood 6 feet 1 inch (1.85 m) tall and weighed 175 pounds (79 kg) (12 stone 7).
He helped the Padres win the 1996 National League Western Division championship, appearing in 33 games played – 21 after 31 July – and batting .315 with 29 hits, five doubles, one home run, seven runs batted in and seven stolen bases. In the field, he started at four different defensive positions: second base, third base, shortstop and right field. However, he did not appear in the postseason.
In 11 seasons Shipley played in 582 games and had 1,345 at bats, 155 runs scored, 364 hits, 63 doubles, six triples, 20 home runs, 138 RBI, 33 stolen bases, 47 bases on balls, a .271 batting average, .302 on-base percentage, .371 slugging percentage, 499 total bases, 15 sacrifice hits, nine sacrifice flies and 7 intentional walks.
Shipley's post-playing career began in 2000, when he was a roving minor league baserunning and infield instructor for the Montréal Expos. He then returned to the Padres as a professional scout, working for Towers, in 2001–2002.
In 2003, Shipley followed former Padres executives Larry Lucchino and Theo Epstein to the Boston Red Sox, where he began as special assistant to the general manager, player development and international scouting. He was named a vice president in 2006, and was appointed senior vice president, international scouting, in 2009. In February 2011, Shipley was promoted again, when he was named senior vice president, player personnel and international scouting. However, weeks after Epstein departed the Red Sox for the Chicago Cubs in October 2011, Shipley was dismissed in an overhaul of the Boston front office under the team's new general manager, Ben Cherington.
In 2012, Shipley was hired by the Arizona Diamondbacks as an assistant to general manager Kevin Towers. As of 2018, he is still part of the Diamondbacks front office, assisting "the Baseball Operations Department in international and special assignment scouting, evaluating the D-backs' farm system and serving as an advisor to the GM."

10 Best Baseball Coaching Clubs for Kids in Australia
Tumblr media
Baseball is a bat-and-ball game played between two opposing teams who take turns batting and fielding. The game proceeds when a player on the fielding team, called the pitcher, throws a ball which a player on the batting team tries to hit with a bat.
The objective of the offensive team (batting team) is to hit the ball into the field of play, allowing its players to run the bases, having them advance counter-clockwise around four bases to score what are called "runs". The objective of the defensive team (fielding team) is to prevent batters from becoming runners, and to prevent runners' advance around the bases.
A run is scored when a runner legally advances around the bases in order and touches home plate (the place where the player started as a batter). The team that scores the most runs by the end of the game is the winner.
There are many baseball clubs in Australia who do best work for coaching kids and here are some listed below.

History Of Baseball In Australia.
Tumblr media
Baseball was believed to have been brought to Australia with Americans gold miners in the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s, where miners would play baseball on the gold fields on their rest days.
The first reports of organised teams and results appeared in Ballarat, Victoria in 1857.
In 1867, Victorian cricketers William Gaggin and Louis Goldsmith tried to set up a game of baseball at Yarra Park but were disrupted by fans arriving for a local Australian football match.
The first competitive series was played between the Surry Baseball Club and members of the New South Wales Cricket Association over June/July 1878.
However, it is argued competitive organised one off matches from as early as 1875 were played before this time. The first interstate baseball games were played in 1890 when Victoria played South Australia at the East Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The visitors won the best of three series 16-14, 27-18 and 22-26 in Melbourne. These two states in 1897 formed the first Australia representative baseball team which toured the United States on what became known as the Kangaroo Tour.
The Australian team sponsored by Mr A.J. Roberts with £1,500 was selected to tour the United States. They were outclassed by the home teams, winning only eight of their first 26 games.
The Americans were surprised to note the Australian outfielders did not wear gloves.
Many of the tourists relied on friends and relatives to get them home as the organisers ran out of credit to send them back home. Those players on the team who could afford it continued on to tour England. Games were billed as Australia vs England and were played at the Crystal Palace Sports Ground, although the tour turned sour when the team manager left London with the gate receipts, leaving many more players in financial limbo.
This set the game back several years in Victoria and South Australia; however, it continued to flourish in New South Wales where the sport was established as a winter sport through the New South Wales Winter League in 1898.
The first Australian championships were in 1910 in Hobart, Tasmania between New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania and won by NSW. This was followed by a similar series in Melbourne, Victoria between Victoria, NSW, South Australia and Tasmania in August 1910.
NSW also won this series. In December 1888, an American, Albert Spalding, brought his Chicago White Stockings and a team of U.S. all-stars to Australia, as part of a world tour. Sydney Cricket Ground hosted three games.
At the end of the 19th century, Americans also tried to set up baseball leagues and competitions in Australia, with some success. A national league was initiated in 1934, and the national team entered World Championship competition in the late 1970s.
Prior to winning the silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Australia had finished 7th in the Olympics twice, which is also the highest position reached in World Championships.
In the late 1980s to late 1990s the national league took off, with most capital cities having a team. The games were broadcast weekly on ABC television around the country. In the 12 months to March 1995 baseball hit its peak attendance rates with 133,000 people, equivalent to 0.9% of Australians over 15, having attended a baseball game that year.
This was just under the attendance of Golf and above outdoor hockey and lawn bowls. A national-level competition still exists, as well as lower-level club competitions, but the game attracts comparatively little or no spectator or media interest.
Several Australians, however, have attracted the attention of American scouts and have gone on to play in the major leagues in the United States and Japan.
Although baseball remains a fringe sport at adult level, it has experienced explosive growth at the youth level in the 21st century. The first Little League Baseball-affiliated league in the country was established in 2007.
By mid-2012, the number of Little Leagues in the country had risen to about 400, making Australia the largest country in Little League participation outside of North America. This growth led the parent organisation to announce that Australia would receive an automatic berth in the Little League World Series starting in 2013.

Coming Soon - A Women’s Baseball League in Australia.
Tumblr media
As a Sydney-sider who loves sport, I’m someone who has many favourite sporting teams across a variety of codes. When you ask me who I support, you’ll often get quite a long answer and any possible combination of the Parramatta Eels, GWS Giants, Giants Netball, Sydney Thunder and also the Sydney Blue Sox.
Many of those teams will be familiar to you, except for the Blue Sox potentially.
The Sydney Blue Sox are the Australian Baseball League’s New South Wales based team and I have had the opportunity to go watch the semi-professional league based at Blacktown International Sports Park in the summer.
Until now, participation in the ABL has been limited to men; but not for much longer given Baseball Australia’s announcement last week that they intend to introduce a women’s ABL. The women’s ABL is set for a soft launch in season 2019-2020 and a full launch in season 2020-2021.
The intention is that this league will be rolled out in a similar way to the AFLW and NRLW, whereby existing ABL teams will make a bid for licences and then these licenses will be granted to a select number of teams. It is expected that in the inaugural year, there will be four to five teams.
For Cam Vale, CEO of Baseball Australia, the introduction of the league makes sense, particularly given the revolution we are currently seeing in women’s sport.
For Cam and the heads of his state associations their view is this – “creating similar pathways for the women that exist for the mean seems like a no brainer”.
There will be challenges in establishing this new league; but also great opportunities.
One of those challenges is dollars.
When observing the success of the WBBL, AFLW and NRLW, it’s clear there is a very real appetite for women’s sport content among fan-bases. However it is still a challenge to demonstrate this value to large corporates, even for the larger sports so, for a sport like baseball, the challenge is even greater.
Compared to many other sports though, baseball has a unique opportunity in that it truly is an international sport. According Tahnee Lovering, who captained the Australian Women’s Baseball team at the last World Cup (and has been playing for the national team for 15 years), there is an opportunity for this women’s ABL to be a hub for female baseball around the world.
According to Tahnee, “we have the opportunity for this professional league in Australia to be an international product and bring real strength in the world of baseball.”
It also follows other countries like Japan, who already have a professional women’s league and Venezuela who has also established one (but is facing some uncertainty due to political instability).
In this challenging corporate space, for Cam, one of the advantages that some of the smaller sports have, is that their fans are largely their participants, rather than followers of domestic teams. That means that brands that align with these sports have a very real opportunity.
“We have the ability to build a true loyalty factor, which is significant. For participants of these sports, to see companies get behind the sport that they are passionately involved in, is more likely to build loyalty towards that brand, compared to some of the larger sports,” says Cam.
Additionally part of this launch, Baseball Australia has also focused on its grassroots and is asking 1,000 people to donate $250 dollars to play a key role in helping to establish this league. For these people, they will have permanent recognition as part of this league in perpetuity, given that their names will be on the back of the trophy.
Baseball does get high performance funding for elite and high performing teams, but this money is exclusively allocated to the men because of the 2020 Olympics approaching. This often leaves the women’s teams little choice other than to seek public support and focus on the grassroots space which has been such a key driver in pushing the women’s game.
While women’s leagues play a very important role in establishing a clear pathway for female athletes in most sports, there are other motivations for baseball.
This league will create a stronger link between club baseball and competing at the national level and be a clear pathway for existing athletes, international athletes and up and coming athletes.
But Tahnee says, “Not only for baseball in general, but women’s baseball, there is a gap in awareness and knowledge. Sometimes people will try to correct you and say ‘you play softball not baseball’ so awareness of the sport is crucial.”
When I ask Tahnee about what success looks like in terms of remuneration to compete in this league, her answer is this.
“If it was about the money, we wouldn’t be playing.”
For Cam however, this remuneration point is important. At the moment, for many sports, it is user-pays which means that our elite female athletes are often paying to compete. To flip this on its head and be in a position where women do not have to pay to play and are even being remunerated a small amount, is a step in the right direction.
An advantage that baseball does have over many other sports though is that given the men’s league is also semi-professional there is the opportunity to bridge the gender pay gap in their sport, immediately or very quickly after establishing this league.
At the moment, the ABL clubs have all been invited to bid for licences. The next step will be seeing which teams are successful as we move closer to the soft launch of this league at the end of the year.
For women’s sports fans, this is just another opportunity to support tremendous athletes and help the next generation see another chance to play sport at a domestic and international level.
When I put on my uniform, I feel I am the proudest man on earth. People in uniform always look so great.
The uniform makes for brotherhood, since when universally adopted it covers up all differences of class and country.

Baseball and Diet in Australia.
Tumblr media
Baseball is a skill-based sport that emphasises motor skills, coordination and agility. In addition, baseball players also need a high power-to-weight ratio to be both quick and strong. In Australia, baseball is played at junior level through to elite, with most athletes aiming for selection to play for a major league team in the USA.  Baseball is one of the few sports without a predefined time limit. Multiple games may be played per day and game time can vary from 1½ hours to over 3 hours.
About Baseball
Baseball is a game played between two teams of nine players who take turns batting and fielding. The batting team aims to score runs by hitting the ball thrown by a pitcher (from the fielding team) and then running through four bases (first, second, third and home). A run is only scored if a player returns to home base.
It is a fast paced and intensive sport requiring a mixture of motor skills, coordination, agility, speed, and strength. In addition, baseball players also need a high power-to-weight ratio to be both quick and strong.
In Australia, baseball is played at junior level through to elite with many athletes aiming to play in a major league team in the USA. At the junior levels, there is a modified version of baseball known as Tee Ball that introduces young players (5-10 yrs) to the fundamentals of the sport. As players progress they will often train and play at a club level and may also be associated with representative state or national teams as well as talent development programs. For some players there are also opportunities to attend scouting camps for international competitions.
A typical baseball season runs for 26 weeks with one to two games per day on a weekend. In Australia, there can be both summer and winter leagues.
Each game usually consists of 9 innings with teams switching between batting and fielding every time there are 3 players ‘out’. Interestingly, baseball is one of few sports that do not have a predefined time limit and game time can vary between 1.5 hours to over 3 hours.
While there are 9 starting players, many substitute players are permitted and there are often five or more starting pitchers and further relief pitchers in reserve. Once a player is substituted they may not re-enter the game. At junior levels, there are also limitations on the number of pitches each player can have in a match.
Training diet
Baseball training consists of a mixture of strength, speed, skill specific, sprinting, and weight training exercises. The main nutritional goals for baseball players are to maintain energy levels and concentration as well as ensure adequate hydration for performance.
Requirements for each individual player depends on their playing position, body composition goals, and differing training programs. A nutritious eating pattern helps to support the needs of fit, energetic and strong baseball players. Nutrition is often based around lean proteins for muscle repair and recovery, carbohydrate appropriately timed for fuelling. In addition, fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and healthy fats provide important vitamins and minerals.
Focus should be on eating on a wide variety of nutrient rich foods (cereals, wholegrains, fruit, vegetables, dairy products, lean meat and poultry, fish, nuts and legumes). Timing of meals and snacks over the day can improve nutrient absorption, manage appetite, and maximise fuelling and recovery, training and performance.
Fluid needs
Baseball requires fast pace running, quick decision-making, concentration, coordination and ball skills. Research shows that dehydration can increase skill errors, reduce concentration and impair speed and coordination.
In order to stay hydrated, players should drink fluids before, during, and after training and matches. However, body fluid needs will depend on individual fluid losses, which vary depending on individual sweat rate.
The aim is to start any exercise session or competition well hydrated. This requires drinking regularly throughout the day leading up to training or competition. Having a drink with all meals and snacks is a good start.
As baseball is played outdoors and can be played over several hours, it is important for players to drink regularly throughout the game to maintain good hydration levels.
Eating before competition
Baseball players should begin each game well fuelled and hydrated. As an additional challenge, baseball games may extend for several hours and time may be spent travelling to and from the game venue. Remember that game-day nutrition is impacted by the quality of week-long nutrition.
Each athlete is different, but players will often eat a pre-game meal around 3 to 4 hours before the start of the match. This meal should contain some carbohydrate for fuel as well as some fluids for hydration. A small amount of protein in the pre-game meal is also useful, as it can help to prevent hunger during the game. To avoid stomach discomfort, you may choose foods low in fibre and fat to aid digestion.
Some suitable pre-game meal options include:
Whole Grain cereal with milk or yoghurt and fruit
Toast with eggs or baked beans
Sandwich with simple fillings
Chicken and vegetable risotto
Beef stir-fry with noodles
An extra carbohydrate-based snack can be used as a final top up of fuel stores 1-2 hours leading up to the match.
Some suitable pre-game snack ideas include:
Fresh fruit or fruit salad
Yoghurt with nuts
Plain or fruit toast with peanut butter
Fruit smoothie (great option if feeling nervous before a game)
Eating and drinking during competition
As baseball games are unpredictable and can last for an extended period of time, it is best to come prepared with plenty of snacks and fluid choices to last through all circumstances.
Snacks such as fruit, cereal bars, and light sandwiches are beneficial for baseball players with high workloads to keep up fuel supplies for their brains and muscle, and for managing hunger during long games. These snacks can be used as a top up throughout game time.
While water is the priority fluid during training and for hydration during the day and in most matches, sports or electrolyte drinks may be useful during a game for players identified as having high energy requirements or big workloads.
Players should work closely with an Accredited Sports Dietitian to trial nutrition strategies during training and matches to find which foods work best for each player.
Recovery
The main goals for recovery after training or games are to:
Refuel muscle glycogen (replace fuel stores)
Repair muscle (for function & development)
Rehydrate (replace fluids lost through sweat)
Recovery meals and snacks should contain carbohydrate (fuel), some protein (for muscle repair and development) and plenty of fluids and electrolytes to replace sweat losses. A recovery meal or snack should be consumed soon after exercise period, especially training or competing more than once in a day.
Some recovery food suggestions include:
Wrap or sandwich with ham, cheese and salad
Dairy-based fruit smoothie
Homemade pizzas with chicken, cheese & veggies
Fruit salad with yoghurt and mixed nuts
