Well, I don’t see it happening in the form of meeting someone. Maybe I’ll get an email or a call from someone fantastic and life changing. Or maybe I won’t. That’s more likely. I’ve been obsessing over the new album. I always do that until it’s just right. I don’t know if I have the formula just right for this one yet. I know there are great songs. I just need to figure out the strands that bond them together into a great album. And I will obsess until it’s there. This album, any album, is the next 2 years of my life. It has to be more than amazing. It has to be great enough to keep my attention for 2 years.

Perfectionist-ness. I keep growing tired of songs because I know I’ve raised the bar and I can beat half the songs. Scott and I had lunch the other day. We were talking about the record and I had this epiphany. I didn’t talk in interviews about how I felt about much of what has happened in the last 2 years. I’ve been silent about so much that I’m saying on this album. It’s time to Speak Now. Scott freaked out. He loved it. We have a title, ladies and gentlemen!

So I’ve been a little studio rat since the tour ended (and it ended oh so beautifully in front of 55,000 screaming fans at Gillette Stadium. It was just … wow). Ever since, I wake up to my cell phone alarm around 9:30 each morning. Throw on a sundress, skip make up, tie my hair in a messy side braid, and head out the door with no shoes on. Because the only walking outside I’ll be doing is from my house to my car, then from my car, three steps to Nathan’s basement studio. The CMT Awards were last week. I shocked the world and straightened my hair that night. Gasp!! I worked on a song for a few days, then basically finished it in the car on the way to Nathan’s this morning. It. Is. So. Good. And I can safely say I am DONE writing this record!! This song is up-tempo, and hooky and sort of torn-sounding … like this horrible stressed confusion that comes on when you knew the person you’re pining away for is in the room. And for some reason, there are these invisible walls keeping things from being ok. So you’re not fine. And they’re not fine. And I’m so happy I wrote that song!! :) Taylor

Today was a long day but it was great to get all of that stuff done-- The Grand Ole Opry performance was tonight. The Opry was just reopened and the backstage is AMAZING now. Since the flood, they redid everything. Every room is custom and chic and just lovely. Warm and well thought out. I walked to Starbucks this morning with my headphones on, listening to music. Music has helped me a lot lately. It helps me quiet my very loud fears. I love mornings like that, smiling and talking to strangers, waving to fans and they burst into tears and screams... All before noon. I drove to the Opry around 3 because I had to do some video interviews. I wore a sparkly cream dress for my performances, my first one was at 8, the second at 10. I preformed You Belong, Love Story, and a solo acoustic version of Mine. That got excellent response. It almost turns into a different song when its acoustic. I got applause several times throughout the song. I was more nervous on the first show. I get stagefright every time I walk onto a stage now. I wish it wasn't so, but I can't blame my mind for freaking about performances. Criticism of my performances has been the biggest source of pain in my life. We simply cannot get enough of this one-of-a-kind, V-6 Hemi-powered 1936 Willys pickup that took home one of the biggest awards in the hot rod hobby. It’s easy to see why: Just look at it. The judges of the 2020 Grand National Roadster Show back in January thought so much of Ron and Vicki Ernsberger’s Ferrari red Willys Model 77 that they honored it with the coveted Al Slonaker Memorial Award. A few weeks later, the Willys was also on display at the Detroit Autorama, drawing eyeballs away from the Ridler Award contenders parked around it.

Builder Brian Limberg and the fabricators at The Tin Man’s Garage in Sycamore, Illinois, built the wild Willys truck from very little raw material. It had started its life as a humble mail delivery truck then subsequent owners made unsuccessful attempts at remaking it into a street rod. Then The Thin Man’s Garage got a hold of the ’36 Willys, where it underwent an amazing 8-year transformation from undistinguished work truck to exalted trophy winner.

This special set of photos were taken in part by photographer Robert McGaffin at a photo shoot when the Willys was almost finished but still in bare metal. Limberg also sent us illustrator Jimmy Smith’s concept drawings, which were used to visualize and design the pickup. He also shared some cool behind-the-scenes photos of the Willys along the entire course of the build. The earliest photo shows the Willys, battered and rusty, when it first showed up at The Tin Man’s Garage. In the latest photo, the Willys is on display at the Grand National Roadster Show, barely visible behind Ron Ernsberger, Limberg, the rest of the TMG crew, and the sweet, sweet fruit of their nearly decade long labor—the gigantic billet trophy presented to winner of the 2020 Slonaker Award. What a ride!

The Willys in its finally-finished form shot by photographer Jimmy Cliff, soaking in Rosso Mugello deep red paint, with spindle-mount Halibrand mags wheels with skinny Firestone front tires and rear Hurst cheater slicks.

The Willys as a worn out civil service veteran, and still in its right hand-drive configuration from its life as a U.S. Post Office mail delivery truck. This raw material provided the inspiration, if not much else, for what would become a phenomenal show truck.

The Tin Man’s wrenches were just warming up when Jimmy Smith came up with his concept illlustrations for the project. The Gasser graphics and a few other details were altered as the project progressed, but for the most part, the envisioned Willys is very close to the real thing.

Limberg told us that only a small percentage of the original sheetmetal was salvageable, and what was used was reworked to create a more modern, elegant design. The factory frame was scrapped entirely and a custom chromoly full round-tube chassis was built at Tin Man’s Garage.

I moved to Nashville in 2009. A singer-songwriter from Colorado making the pilgrimage to Music City, because that’s what songwriters do. I wanted to be around the best, and I was not disappointed. In my first year, I watched Sheryl Crow perform for a music video in Centennial Park, I had a great conversation with Ray Stevens at Grimey’s Record Store, and I saw Chrissy Hynde perform at the Exit/In to a crowd of less than fifty. Since then there have been many other memorable moments, but what I treasure most are the people, many of whom I met at a store called Scarlett Begonia on West End Avenue. It’s across the street from the Commodore at the Holiday Inn, where singer-songwriters line up for a chance to perform at Debi Champion’s Writer’s Night, a longstanding Nashville tradition.

As with most songwriters who come to town, I needed a day job. My husband, a guitar player, as well as a guitar amplifier builder and repairman, quickly found work at Rock Block Guitars on Elliston Place—which is how I first found Scarlett Begonia. The colorful window displays drew me in like a magical spell, and for several minutes all I could do was stare in awe at all the beautiful details—hand-carved gourds, seed jewelry in every color of the rainbow, stylish clothes and intricate weavings. Lucky for me, someone broke the spell and spoke to me in a friendly voice that I loved the moment I heard it. It was Kyle Elias, one of the owners. We became fast friends and when I told her I was looking for work her eyes twinkled. She flashed a big grin and said she would talk to her daughter Gabriela. Not only did I gain some lifelong friends working at the store, but I also gained an education in customer service, merchandising and music. As we worked, we listened to music, curated mostly by Jack Elias, Kyle’s husband and co-owner of the store. While I helped customers and straightened displays, I honed my craft of songwriting by listening to Gram Parsons, Rodney Crowell, Emmylou Harris, Marshall Chapman, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, and yes, the Grateful Dead, whose song “Scarlet Begonias” is the namesake of the store. The stories that Jack and Kyle told while the music played were priceless, but before I delve into those, let’s go back a few years to the beginning.

The roots of Scarlett Begonia go back to 1971 when Jack graduated from Vanderbilt with a degree in Latin American studies. He met Kyle in the summer of 1974 while working at the Jolly Ox restaurant in Goodlettsville, TN. Jack soon left to travel with a friend throughout South America and his descriptive letters of the beauty he encountered enticed Kyle to follow within a few months. After returning to Nashville, the couple spent the next two years waiting tables and tending bar at the Gold Rush on Elliston Place, saving money for their next trip to South America. (Both the Gold Rush and Rock Block Guitars on Elliston Place are no longer here, partly a result of changing times, and the escalating rents that come with progress.)  They even celebrated their wedding reception at the Gold Rush in 1976. Jack and Kyle’s stories of the ‘70s and ‘80s Nashville music scene are priceless--stories of serving drinks to Townes Van Zandt, Shel Silverstein, and Guy Clark, who used to tell them to play his latest album while he sat at the bar. Just across the street, the Exit/In was in the height of its glory days, and many legendary artists played at the iconic venue before they made it big. Jack and Kyle are music lovers to the core and one can learn a lot about music from the soundtrack of their lives.

However, aside from music, there is another great love they share which is the culture and people of South America. After marrying in ’76,  they ventured out to explore the treasures of South America, traveling and living in places throughout Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia--embracing the native cultures, shopping at the markets, making friends, and developing a keen eye for the finest in indigenous arts and crafts. After spending their limited resources on irresistible finds at the markets they came up with the idea to bring their treasures back to the United States and open a shop. Thus, Scarlett Begonia was born and opened its doors on October 1, 1981.

Scarlett Begonia was fair-trade before fair-trading was cool. For almost 40 years, Jack, Kyle, and now their daughter Gabriela have mindfully chosen every item in the store and displayed them with careful attention to detail. Through the years, they’ve dressed some of their favorite musicians in Nashville. Emmylou Harris bought an Ecuadorian Poncho from Scarlett Begonia in the late ‘80s which she is wearing on the “Brand New Dance” album cover. The cotton men’s Matrimonial shirts from Ecuador are also a favorite among many musicians and are easily recognizable on stages throughout town. Every item in the store has a story—about where it came from, who made it, and how it got here, nothing is ordinary. Master gourd carver Pedro Osores is a close family friend and travels from Cochas, Peru every other year for in-store demonstrations. Jack, Kyle, and Gabriela still purchase many of the items on an annual trip to the Otovalo market in Ecuador, including handwoven rugs and wall hangings, paintings by their godson Patricio, Chales (lightweight scarves), handcrafted jewelry made by Betty and much more. They know the artists’ families and their children and have stayed true to their original objective to provide an outlet for struggling artisans from around the world and to gain positive exposure of native cultures through their folk art and clothing. On any given day, Jack can be heard conversing in Spanish with his Latin American friends on his flip phone while out on the sidewalk. Fair-trade is still a basis for all their business dealings. Scarlett Begonia also offers items from several Nashville-based companies that share their business practices and sentiments including Thistle Farms, Bee Attitudes, Center Earth Pottery, fine jewelry by Sealy, and several others.

Scarlett Begonia is the heart and soul of Nashville. A small family business that continues to open its doors day after day. For almost forty years, the colorful windows of Scarlett Begonia have brightened the busy street that leads to downtown Nashville. The antique bells that hang on the side of the wooden open sign ring every time the door opens as they have for decades. Sure, shopping online is easy and convenient, and we’re all busy. Should You Rent Your Home Decor? When It May Be Smarter to Rent Pillows, Blankets, and More

So you want a total home decor refresh, but you’re reluctant to drop the big bucks to turn your home into a Pinterest-worthy palace? You may be in luck: Rent the Runway, an online rental service that provides designer clothing and accessories for a fraction of the purchase price, is teaming up with West Elm to rent out chic home decor.

Starting in June, a selection of 26 West Elm bedroom and living room bundles (including comforters, quilts, shams, decorative pillows, and more) will be available to rent under the Rent the Runway umbrella,

These home decor bundles will be available only through Rent the Runway subscriptions. The company’s two subscription plans currently cost $89 a month for four rentals per month, and $159 a month for unlimited rentals. Customers who are particularly attached to a specific rental they’ve chosen can keep it for as long as they want and eventually purchase the pieces at a discounted price.

Yet as convenient as renting your home decor sounds, it raises plenty of questions, too. For example: Will it be better for your wallet to rent instead of buy? Heck, is it even hygienic to put furnishings in your home that have touched countless other people and pets? Here’s what to know about renting your home decor.

Does it make sense financially to rent home furnishings?

While renting home decor may seem like a cheap and easy way to switch up your style each season, it may cost you a pretty penny if you plan to stay in your home for the long haul, according to Alex Lavrenov, a New York City–based real estate agent with Warburg Realty.

“If you buy a home with the intention of owning it for a long time, it makes sense to just purchase your furnishings,” he says. “It may very well be that you will spend more renting one piece over 12 months than that same piece would cost you outright.”

Instead, Lavrenov predicts that home decor rentals will have major appeal for short-term renters.

“Renting furnishings really only makes sense if you are renting for 30 to 90 days maximum,” adds Amanda Carlson, lead interior designer and home stager with Southern Athena, in Nashville, TN. “It may be used by people in larger cities that tend to apartment-hop more often because it gives them freedom to change up their decor quickly each time they head to a new space.”

However, Carlson also points out that furnishing rentals could be a game changer for potential sellers looking to update their decor before they list their home.

“But I would still urge homeowners to hire a certified home stager to work on this process with; they are the expert on what is appropriate for each space,” she says.

What home decor is safe to rent—and what should you avoid?

Although Rent the Runway dry-cleans rental furnishings once they’re returned, Carlson would still be cautious about putting fabric items like pillows, blankets, and comforters in her home.

“It is always easier to rent nonfabric items such as tables and consoles,” she says. “I personally worry about animal hair and dander getting down into fabric goods and then still being there once the product is rented to someone with a pet allergy.”

Bryan Stoddard, creator of home improvement site Homeware Insider, also suggests avoiding fabric items and always checking a rental service’s cleaning policies.

“People must understand that rented items have often seen some use,” he says. “It might feel uncomfortable to rent items that, for example, you can sit or [lie] on, like extra pillows, carpets, and even sofas.”
