Sad to hear about the passing of actor Tom Bower today.😢😢😢😢 As Curt, he certainly kept Mary-Ellen on her toes.
My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time 🌹🌹🌹

A few days ago I posted some art I did of the Rogues' siblings. This kid, Willard Wiggins (I mistakenly called him "Walter" in that post, probably because one of the "W"s in his dad's name stands for Walter), is the most obscure.
He's the son of W. W. Wiggins, and, since W. W. Wiggins was later revealed to be Captain Boomerang's biological father, that would make Willard here Digger's younger half-brother.
This was his only appearance. It's from Flash vol. 1 #311, which featured Colonel Computron trying to kill his dad and the Flash and Captain Boomerang trying to save his dad for different reasons (Digger, who didn't know that Wiggins was his father yet, felt that he owed Wiggins for setting him up as Captain Boomerang).
Also featuring Barry Allen (the Flash) out of costume, Police Chief Darryl Frye, and Barry's friend, Detective Frank Curtis.

Welcome to Indianapolis, where Arab American history is 'hidden in plain sight'
Tumblr media
There's a plaque outside of Lucas Oil Stadium that has nothing to do with football. "If you look at Lucas Oil Stadium, you have no idea that there used to be a vibrant, Arabic-speaking community here," Dr. Edward E. Curtis IV told WRTV.
Willard Street once ran through what is now known as the home of the Indianapolis Colts. From 1890 to 1920, Willard Street was packed with people who immigrated to the United States from the eastern Mediterranean, now known as Syria and Lebanon.
"People would sit outside on their stoops, especially on Sundays, where they'd share food…and sing their songs. And they lived as a multiracial neighborhood of Black, white, and brown people. We just don't know that," Dr. Curtis said.
After World War I, Arab Americans were given access to more housing in Indianapolis. As a result, according to Dr. Curtis, Arabs spread out from the east to the west side in search of more land to put their grocery stores, which was a significant part of Arab culture.
Curtis, the Chair of Liberal Arts and a professor of Religious Studies at IUPUI, has made it his life's work to bring the history of Arab Americans out of the shadows. More pointedly, Arab Americans of the Midwest.
"I grew up in rural southern Illinois. My grandmother — was like my second mother — brought me up to have pride in my Arab heritage," Dr. Curtis explained. "I just had no idea when I moved to Indianapolis several years ago that there was such a rich history here."
When the professor began to look for the presence of his ancestors in their migration to the U.S., he found not only the heartbeat of the Indianapolis Arabic community but several landmarks associated with Indiana history also marked the history of Arab Hoosiers.
youtube
As Shakkira Harris explains, what Curtis found in his research was so profound that he created a map, "The Arab Indianapolis Heritage Trail."
"The first Arab American statewide officeholder was a woman in the 1960s (Helen Corey). Nobody knows about her, but she should be a household name in Indiana," Curtis noted. "Arab Americans served in the military in World War I and after, and they are memorialized in the War Memorial.
One of the most prominent stores on Monument Circle (Shaheen Oriental Rugs) is today the entrance to Hilbert Circle Theatre, where the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra plays, and that is from the 1920s part of our Indiana past and our Arab past."
The Arab Indianapolis Heritage Trail is just one of several efforts Curtis has made to bring the contributions of Arab Americans to the city and state's culture and economic growth to light. In his 13th book, "Arab Indianapolis," Dr. Curtis documents Arab Hoosier history. It's a history that he says is "hidden in plain sight."
In addition to photographs and history, Arab Indianapolis also has interviews, vignettes, and recipes. He says that he recognizes that Arab Americans are a relatively small percentage of the country's population, but he doesn't want his history to be "something set aside. It's a part of" America's history."

Kansas Day 2019
January 29 is Kansas Day! Turns out, my state was “first” in a lot of things. Check out this list:
• U.S. patent for a helicopter was issued to Kansans William Purvis and Charles Wilson of Goodland. They invented the helicopter in 1909. A replica of their original helicopter can be viewed at the High Plains Museum in Goodland.
The booming airplane production in Wichita led to that city being called the “air capital of the world.” In the 1920s, Clyde Cessna of Kingman, Lloyd Stearman of Wellsford and Walter Beech worked on one of those pioneering airplane companies in Wichita. Walter Beech and his wife, Olive Ann, from Waverly started their own business, Beech Aircraft Company, in 1932. When Walter became ill, Olive Ann was the first woman to receive the National Aeronautic Association’s Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy.
• Of all women in aviation, Amelia Earhart was the most famous. Earhart, from Atchison, was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. She was preceded by the first man to fly solo non-stop across the Atlantic. His name was Charles Lindbergh. When Lindbergh was barnstorming as a young pilot, he lived near Bird City.
• On a more down-to-earth note, the world’s first bulldozer was invented by J. Earl McLeod and Jim Cummings in Morrowville.
There are many, many other Kansas firsts. Several involve women in politics.
• Susanna Salter of Argonia was the first woman elected mayor in the U.S. in 1887 S he was a member of the Prohibition Party, and Kansas was the first state to pass a law to prohibit all alcoholic beverages (that one didn’t work out so well).
• In 1949, banker Georgia Neese Clark of Richland was appointed by President Harry Truman as the first woman Treasurer of the United States. That meant her signature was printed on millions of dollars’ worth of U.S. currency.
• In 1978, Nancy Landon Kassebaum was elected to the U.S. Senate, becoming the first woman elected to a full term in the Senate without being preceded by a husband. She would later retire to the family ranch near Burdick. Kansas women and minorities made their mark in other fields, also.
• Hattie McDaniel of Wichita was the first African-American woman and, for that matter, the first African-American of any gender, to win an Academy Award for her role in “Gone with the Wind.”
• Another woman founded the first black women’s academy in New England. She came to Kansas and is buried at the rural community of Elk Falls, population 107 people. Now, that’s rural.
• In sports, Lynette Woodard of Wichita was the first woman to play for the Harlem Globetrotters.
• In politics, Charles Curtis of Topeka was the first Native American to become U.S. vice president.
Some firsts are less prominent.
• The nation’s first chain restaurant was the Harvey House restaurants, which served Kansas railroad travelers. A Harvey House Museum is in Florence.
• Decades later, the country’s first national hamburger chain was founded when White Castle opened in Wichita.
• The world’s first synthetic diamond was made by Dr. Willard Hersey on the McPherson College Campus in 1926.
Also in McPherson was an amateur athletic basketball team sponsored by the local oil refinery. In 1936, the first year that basketball was an Olympic sport, the Globe Refiners from Kansas became the first basketball team to win a gold medal in the Olympics.
Let’s not forget that we’re known for The Wizard of Oz, and the chain restaurant Freddy’s also began in Kansas, as the founder was from Wichita.

My Pop Life #204 : Sure ‘Nuff ‘N Yes I Do – Captain Beefheart
Sure ‘Nuff ‘N Yes I Do  –  Captain Beefheart
Well I was born in the desert, came on up from New Orleans Came up on a tornado, sunlight in the sky I went around all day with the moon sticking in my eye
The song itself doesn’t really mean anything to me. So what’s it doing here then?  It’s a blues copy of an old jugband song by Gus Cannon which is a shout out to young girls to come on by  and spend…
