may i ask which one you mean by the first? the series was not written chronologically so 'the first' could be referring to two different books. should you choose to read, i would love to hear what you think! they have so much going for them:
evil academia. no joke these guys literally try to murder each other constantly
magic science, is the best way i can describe it. solid lightning, immortal forests, talking bears, floating rocks, and weather that affects your emotions
evil lightning cult feeds children to ravine monsters
amnesia plotline happens at least once per main character
dr frankenstein accidentally reinvents satan (makes sense in context)
brutal social criticism
EXTREMELY violent murder and torture scenes. telepathy features in one of them
some gorgeous character arcs and the most beautiful prose ever
As he focused in on the dark, swirling air, his heart missed a beat. The approaching vortex was indeed monstrous. It was as if the great milky clouds were curdling and falling in on themselves, swirling into a great blood-red throat at the centre of which was an inky blackness that threatened to swallow the tiny sky ship whole.
don't mean to intrude but i have a feeling you'd like the prose of the edge chronicles. it very much has the same lyrics insanity as marc platt's prose
OOH I LOVE THIS.... ngl i do have the first book on hold at the library 馃憖 i love lyrical prose and wild descriptions!!

so you want to read the edge chronicles
i am aware that this is not a question anyone is asking. it is, however, a question i'm answering so tough! the edge chronicles, for those not in the know, is a fantasy series that takes place on a giant floating rock known as the edge which is home to a variety of species and peoples. the series follows five different generations of the same family across a timespan of hundreds of years.
it was written out of order, and the books are all standalone with recurring characters, so imo there's three ideal reading orders:
none. go ham. read the ones you want to first and then devour the rest. like i say, they're connected standalones: context helps, but it's not everything
semi-publication order: read the twig trilogy first, then read the rest in order. beyond the deepwoods was published first and it shows: the edge chronicles gets a lot messier lore-wise once it leaves the twig saga
chronological order: self-explanatory. start with curse of the gloamglozer and read the quint saga first, then twig, rook, nate, and finally cade. within the sagas, just read the books in chronological order - this should be fairly obvious
my personal recommendations within the series (if you aren't interested in committing and just want a standalone novel):
the winter knights and clash of the sky galleons are my favourites of the quint saga, but tbh they're all pretty good
midnight over sanctaphrax is by FAR my favourite of the twig saga. it's so good. second best book in the series
last of the sky pirates is my favourite of the rook saga and my favourite of the whole series - probably because it was the first one i read
the immortals is a trilogy in one but it rocks
the third book of the cade saga is pretty meh, but the first two are fairly solid
the lost barkscrolls is pretty good! it's an anthology of short stories and they're all typical edge chronicles fare, that is to say violent and heartbreaking
