What I'm Reading Now: Sword Catcher by Cassandra Clare
New Year New Books. With that in mind I have set my Goodreads reading challenge to 20 books. I read 35 last year but I do most of my reading on my commute to work but since I work more from home lately I don’t think I’ll be doing as much reading this year. I wasn’t sure if I was going to read this one from Cassandra Clare but it was on sale. It’s the first in a new series not based in the…

*sighs a bit* Okay. Guys. I have been asked this question a lot, and answered it a lot. I don't know how to give a better answer — Dru & Ty&Kit share significance as main characters — so I guess I'll talk a little about comparison and structures.
First, all series have different structures. I don't think it's super useful or predictive to try to map an upcoming, unknown book series onto an existing series. In TLH the main character was Cordelia, everyone else was secondary to her, and people's roles and the significance of them altered from book to book. It was a big ensemble cast and they mostly stayed put in London especially in book 1.
TWP focuses on a smaller group of people. It also has a very different structure. In book one, Dru is not with Kit and Ty. They are in different places, both of which have their own stories that are significant to the plot. There is no way to see Place One without following Dru. There is no way to see Place Two without following Kit and Ty.
I know that TWP is a long way off. I know there are people who are very angry with me that there's such a gap, but there isn't anything currently I can do about that, or about the fact that I don't yet have the schedule for my upcoming books. That rests in the hands of several different publishers who must coordinate the release times and production schedules for four different series. I am not withholding any information about when these books come out. I simply don't know it yet.
I understand that TWP being a long way off makes for anxiety, and that those who are worried Kit and Ty will somehow be secondary are looking for tiny clues in microscopic details — micro-reading the of placement of the word "and" in my newsletter and such — that are meaningless, but I get that it all comes from anxiety. (FTR, those worried Dru will be secondary are equally anxious.)
I think there is only so much I can say. Because there's a big gap between TLH and TWP everything I do say or every image or hint about it is freighted with a weight of assumption it can't really support. Anxiety is always going to trump reassurance. And truly, at the end of the day, if you only care about Kit and Ty and find the idea of a Dru story tiresome, you will feel like they got shafted because when you absolutely hate a plotline, you will always feel like it's taking up way too much space. That's just how our minds work.
I've been doing this long enough that I know no book can survive a hostile reading. I know that Book Three of a trilogy is the one people hate until they don't. (When Clockwork Princess came out people hated it so much I considered quitting writing!) I know that it's wonderful to love a character but can also be a problem for people when I put out books that aren't about that particular character or dynamic. I know that for a lot of people, Sword Catcher and Ragpicker King are just tiresome things that have no business on my schedule because they're not Shadowhunter books. And I get it. But I also have to block it out, because I've been writing a long time, and I've gotten to a point where I know that I have to write the thing I want to be writing, because if I don't, if I sit down and try to force myself to write something I'm not feeling like writing at that time, I'll be making myself physically and mentally sick. And that's no good for anyone, really.
I suppose the positive thing is that, while this would not have been true five years ago, I am at the place where I want very much to be writing Wicked Powers. I missed these characters and am glad to be back with them. I consider this a story in which there are three main characters. And that is all I can say right now because it's all that I know.
(And this was much more of a general response to a lot of things than a specific response to this question, but I did feel like it was stuff that I needed to say. Creators are at the end of the day, just people. Sometimes we are powerless to reassure. Sometimes we are tired. Sometimes we are wrong. Sometimes we try things and they don't work. Sometimes we can't explain to you what our story is going to make you feel, because only reading it is going to tell you that. This may be one of those times.)

10 things for 10 people I'd like to get to know better
tagged by: @lunarriviera <333!!!
last song: I've been listening to "The Eye" by 白鲨JAWS pretty much on repeat since Link Click: Bridon Arc started airing and then regretting all of my life choices when I get to that one line and it makes me weep -- but wait STOP NO NO DON'T LISTEN TO IT. You need to go watch the show instead (start from season 1). The song is pretty spoilery which is why it makes me cry because it is fully centered around the tragedy of [REDACTED]. If you need some non-spoiler-y convincing, here is the post that got me to watch the show.
Have fun! ^_^
favorite colour: all of them
last book: Just finished Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands by Kate Beaton and The Way Out: A Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven Approach to Healing Chronic Pain (lol, I'm old), and I'm in the middle of The Sympathizer by Thanh Nguyen. In the danmei space, I was reading Stars of Chaos, but I sTRuGgLEd through vol. 3 so after abandoning about five different Priest series I think I just have to resign myself to her stuff not being for me.
last movie: The War of the Rohirrim, which was.... meh. The animation was gorgeous, but it was definitely war-heavy (I mean, it IS right there in the title) so I got bored quickly. I'm also very much over Spunky Female Protagonist Is Good at Boy Stuff and Therefore Is Badass!! as a wholeass character profile.
last show: Under the Skin 2, while also still rotating The First Shot and Desire Catcher in my head. And I'm about to watch the last episode of Towards the Truth. Which is. So incredibly gay. The plot is absolutely unfathomable due to the awful AI-generated subs. But I'm enjoying the view....👀
Aaaaanyway after that I'm gonna probably finally catch back up with The Spirealm now that it's on Viki, see what y'all are on about...
sweet/spicy/savory: sweet all the way, sometimes savory, never spicy (imma baby wimp)
relationship status: severely aroace. One time I tried to kiss someone and my whole body went, but WHY?
Last thing I googled: "ride of the rohirrim movie" lmfao I couldn't even remember the name of it
current obsession: Link Click. Link Click. Please watch Link Click!!! Join us in hell!
looking forward to: Life-wise, I'm gonna be joining my martial arts group on a trip to Japan this summer to compete in a wushu competition where I will participate in a group sword routine, thereby living out all my wuxia dreams!!!!! In the meantime, though, I will marinate in extreme travel and performance anxiety, while soothing myself with my bottomless Asian dramas list and Andor season 2. Amen. More immediately, knowing I'll get to go to bed and snuggle up with @elenothar's Under the Skin 2 fic, @lunarriviera UTS 2 fic, and @hidey-writes's The First Shot fic is literally what has been getting me through each work day. <3
tagging: @lquacker @comic-lover @fromhereonblind @wouldyoulikeacupofteadear @xiaobaosnoona @yeliuxi @endrega23 @wuxia-vanlifer @thesilversun @inkstainsonpages but no presh obviously!!!

HIIII
I’m currently not watching anything new, but AM going through a book phase??? (Haven’t finished a book in years, so thank you audiobooks and also probably Vyvanse?) Also I’m pretty sure some came from a rec post here???
I’d say that all of these books have:
- a focus on found family (!!!!)
- an angsty/whumpable male main character
- some hurt/comfort for said mc
- fantasy/magic with (imo) good world building
and are NOT driven by romance (anything that is there is side-plot), and do not include graphic sexual content (or, at least, it was insignificant enough for me to ignore it - same goes for the listed tropes, really - I was able to read with my fav trope blinders on, which doesn’t mean other stuff wasn’t there, but I can’t say that for every book)
1. Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom (Kaz)
2. A Darker Shade of Magic/A Gathering of Shadows (Kell)
3. Dark Rise/Dark Heir (Will)
4. Sword Catcher (Kel)
(Why do they all have single syllable names mostly starting with K and ending with L?)
ANYWAY highly recommend (in order, from 1-4), and would love to know if you (or any followers) have recs for fic (of the above) OR other books that check the boxes (esp if heavy on the comfort!!)
THANKS!
BLESS YOU!!!! I love getting book recs especially fantasy books with little sex/romance!!! That's super rare nowadays so I thank you! I recently finished reading both Fourth Wing and Iron Flame and loved them both (despite them being very romance heavy I found that I didn't mind it at all and really enjoyed the world and the story) and now I'm eager for some more fantasy books to read. Thank you for the recs!! I'll go give them a look!
I have posted some Kaz whump fic recs in the past so I recommend you check out my Shadow and Bone tag for those. If anyone has fic recs for the others on the list please reply with your favs!!
As for other recs may I offer a few of my favorites? The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind, The Ranger Apprentice books by John Flanagan, The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, the Inkheart series by Cornelia Funke.

tagged by: @white-weasel thanks so much!
last song: Starring Role by MARINA! I was listening to the Electra Heart album while working out today and then just left it on repeat for a while cause I was really vibing with it haha
currently reading: Sword Catcher by Cassandra Clare. I don’t have super strong opinions about this book one way or the other but I’m about halfway through it and it’s due back at the library in a few days so I’m trying to finish it! I’m also reading several different comics right now including yj98 and utrh!
last watched: season 4 episode 5 of Lost. I’m rewatching the show with my boyfriend who hasn’t seen it before and it’s a lot of fun to see his reactions
currently obsessed with: I mean definitely dc comics. the Gotham heroes took ahold of me last year and have not let go. but I’m also always constantly thinking about star trek and doctor who
no pressure tagging: @stripesysheaven @wtungsten @hopeful-bat @nepobabyeurydice @tempestandtea @cawgeyamas @saturnisfallingdown and anyone else who would like to do this!
#thanks again for the tag!#personal#I am so bad at actually finishing a whole run for comics I have found cause I get distracted by another character that I want to learn#more about and I look up which comics I should read that feature them and suddenly I’m in the middle of like 7 separate comics spanning#nearly 30 years and I really need to just sit down and finish them

//Well I have some good news, at long last the Valentine's Day Review is fully completed and I sent it over to Bubbles for him to read ...should only take a few days since its a short read by my standards. But now that's done its time for me to celebrate by doing the next Divine Paradox Pokemon in my mini-series, this time its Iroha Nijiue's Paradox Pokemon Oily Painter!
//Yeah its super obvious I was gonna go for Smeargle since its the painter Pokemon after all. Grafaiai was the alternative option but again I don't like doing Paradox Pokemon too soon to the current gen and since Grafaiai is current gen...Smeargle it is. Though I might relent on this eventually since aren't Koraidon and Miraidon Paradox Cyclizars? Yeah this might change in the future but for now I wanted to shed some love onto Smeargle because for the obvious reason we will get to, Smeargle is often overlooked. Like Herby Boxer and Hajime, if there is a extremely clear choice for a Divine Luck User, go for it.
//But to keep with the Grafaiai ties, not only does Oily Painter have a poncho which is more or less its fire, but it shares the same typing, being a Normal/Poison type! I went for this typing not only for that, but also because Iroha is a extremely cowardly person who uses poison for her kills as its such a dishonourable tactic. It does give Oily Painter some STAB options against Fairies and removes the Fighting weakness, but at the cost of a Ground and Psychic weakness...which actually suits Iroha since I could see her folding easily to those two types anyway. Also like all Divine Paradoxes, Oily Painter possesses Divine Luck and due to how Smeargle works, its one of the deadler users of it...or so you think.
//See its time to talk stats and I ran into a problem. All the normal Paradox Pokemon have a BST of 570 and that's what Foxy Love, Herby Boxer and Frozen Hound all have, thus Oily Painter must have that BST. But then comes the issue...Smeargle has a BST of 250 which means I have about 320 stat points to play with, and due to how Smeargle works, if I don't do this right, Oily Painter will be the most powerful Pokemon ever and sorry but Iroha does NOT deserve that level of power. But after some talks with Poi where to disturbute the stats mostly, I have come up with this stat spread which is 105/50/85/45/85/200. Yes, this is a heck lot weaker then most other Paradox Pokemon as most of the stat increases went into Speed which makes Oily Painter tie with Regieleki as the fastest Pokemon ever which gives it more then enough chance to use its moves. Its Health is also not bad either but the rest of its stats are...mid, with defence being okay. This is all for balance reasons since if I made the stats too inflated things would get scary very fast.
//Now we come to the reason I had to gimp Oily Painter so much and its due to its moveset which well...like normal Smeargle and has access to Sketch; the single most broken move in the game. Why is that? Well its because barring a few exceptions, Sketch can be used to learn almost any single move in the entire game. Meaning coming up with a moveset for Oily Painter is useless since well...you can get pretty much anything. Take Down? Judgement? Crush Grip? Poison Jab? Gunk Shot? Malignant Chain? All of those perfectly legal on Oily Painter though personally I see it as a good catcher as you could teach it False Swipe, Swords Dance, Spore and Soak and that would cover any Pokemon you wish to catch. That fast speed could be handy metawise as it would become the ultimate hazard setter getting Spikes and such up before anyone can defeat it. The world if Oily Painter's canvas and really what's stopping Iroha from being too powerful is the fact she dislikes fighting and just copies moves which can help her escape. So Oily Painter's "canonical moveset" is Teleport, Spore, Sludge Bomb and Dizzy Punch.
//Given how immature its trainer is, you would expect Oily Painter to be a equally bratty Pokemon but no its actually a extremely simple minded Pokemon, not caring about what it does as long as it can paint. It doesn't really get why Iroha is so love hungry or draws so much lewd drawings all the time, but it doesn't care. It just goes with the flow on whatever is going on with little thoughts in its brain. There is one thing that can trigger a reaction; destroying art. So when Nikei went to burn Iroha's Yaoi stash, it...didn't take too kindly and tried to attack Nikei, though this failed due to Nikei's own Paradox Pokemon stepping in and managing to KO it, easily done due to the fact Oily Painter isn't a very strong fighter. As a result of its easy going attitude it coexists with Iroha's other Pokemon and the other Divine Paradoxes just fine not really getting into much conflicts. At times it can be hard to tell if it is a Paradox Pokemon due to how non violent it is. Though do be warned that the oil it paints its drawings with is extremely toxic and while Iroha and the Voids have gained a immunity to these poisons...any normal person won't fair too well so probably best to burn the drawings for health reasons.
//And that's it for Oily Painter! A simple design since I knew what I was getting into and I just had to make sure it wasn't too broken. I think I did a good job as while it might be the ideal catcher or hazard setter, it won't be nuking your team at any point, that was never my intention. I'm REALLY excited to do the next Divine Paradox Pokemon since its my boy Nikei's turn and well...his design was locked from the start. You will soon see the design which brought the death of Team Rocket, and I'm very looking forward to drawing it~
//With that its time to go but not before leaving you with the shiny form which due to DTFA spoiler is as always under the cut;
//Once again like Frozen Hound, despite Oily Painter being gold as a shiny it doesn't clash with the golden hues of the Divine Luck energy and the poncha is light blue for reasons, reasons that should be very obvious as we go along the shinies. Kinda looks out of place but hey at least its a noticable shiny.

got tagged by @zevlovor ! It's been a while since I've done one of these.
Last Song: Last Steps by Holy Locust. Actually that whole album has been on loop for a while.
Fave Color: Probably currently teal... it varies a lot though.
Last Book: Last book I finished was Queen of the Damned, by Anne Rice, but I'm currently reading the Sword-Catcher by Cassandra Clare. Enjoyed/enjoying both.
Last Movie: Nosferatu (2024). It was... pretty great, actually.
Last TV Show: My friend wanted to watch something light while writing her article, so Forged in Fire.
Sweet/Savory/Spicy: Sweet or savory (used to be solidly sweet). I like mildly spicy food, but I must admit a rather low tolerance for it.
Relationship Status: tried to think of something funny to say here but single haha.
Last Thing I Googled: Magneto.
Looking Forward to: getting home from work today so I can draw Zevlor...
Current Obsession: I've drawn Zevlor a high number of times in the past week or so. This happens a lot with various characters, but it'll probably continue for a month or two and cycle back to him again eventually. He's pretty great.
Tagging a couple of people to try this, if they want. Only if, though.

A question to the ones currently reading Sword Catcher: am I the only one who wants to kick Connor?
Love lin and kel, they are babies, actually I want to make babies with kel, it's very obvious why everybody in that book is smitten, well done cc but good god the urge to kick that 23yo teenager on the balls shin
I can't say I don't feel a shred of sympathy for him, but it's mainly bc Connor obviously wants to kick himself too.Still Lin and Kel deserve better

Ten people i'd like to get to know better
Tagged by @simonthesneasnake
Last song: Winter Anymore, by critical role. I think we can all establish that Ashley Johnson is a natural treasure, and she nailed this song aswell. Yasha really hits close to the heart, and Ashley's voice makes it a bullseye.
Favourite colour: a kind of dark blue, but its not really dark. It goes a bit towards green. Idk how to describe it but its lightdarkblue
Last book: Thieves Gambit by Kayvion Lewis, i havent finished it yet, but i blame school. Break has started so ill probably have it finished within a few days. Im really in love with it already. After that i think im gonna read sword catcher, wich i have already bought, and maybe ill finish Percy Jackson and the chalice of the gods, but im kinda saving that for a sad day cause it just gives me that nostalgia giggles.
Last Movie: Bad mom's 2, its a Christmas movie and it was actually pretty funny. I watched it with my mom, since she wanted to watch a Christmas movie with me and this one didnt seem all too bad. If we're talking kind of movies i like: marvel and Disney movies, but basically anything fantasy with sparks of humor and trauma (yes Disney does trauma in their movies you just have to look for it)
Last tv-show: Does critical role count? If not i would bet it is the legend of vox machina. Yes im critically critical role obsessed, they have become a part of me. But anyways i really wanna watch arcane and even more so since some of my friends from the uk told me its really good and id really like it. I also watch a lot of British detectives, no im not from Britain, but i wouldnt know wich one i watched last+its something of a tradition with my parents so i didnt really count them.
Sweet/savoury/spicy: Sweet>Savoury>spicy,
I love spicy food but i dont really crave it, i would also say it really depends on the moment and what ive eaten already cause my stomach is very specific with what it can handle at a certain moment of my day...
Relationship status: Singleeeeeee. Isnt everyone? No i just tell myself that. Seriously tho i really dont mind it, its something i choose for myself as i believe i dont really have the time for a relationship. I do have the time im just not willing to sacrifice it wich i think says enough. (Also im pretty young so im good)
Last thing I googled: Sims 4 cheat codes, I installed the game a week ago and got some spare time on my hands yesterday so I decided to play a bit, the game however went a little too slow for my stress-powered brain so i decided to speed up the process.
Current obsession: Critical role/bg3, i am in love with the cr cast and they really feel like older siblings to me, as i am an only child. And bg3 just is an amazing game and the voice actors are also such a lovely community (i sense a pattern here, Hmm) I am Particularly in love with aliona and jen(iffer English) they are such a cutesy couple and are just warmth all around.
Looking forward to:
WINTER BREAK
It starts tomorrow and i already have so many fun things planned. Im going ice skating, watching my series and hopefully catching up a bit on critical role c2. I am also really looking forward to having time to get better at New skills, i have been attempting to learn blender but have been stuck on the same part of a tutorial for 3 months. My reading has greatly diminished aswell so im hoping the Christmas spirit will have me reading in the mornings from the comfort of my warm bed. Also gonna see some family over the holidays (i see them a lot but theyre getting older so i really like spending time with them, it brings me peace)
Tagging (no pressure)
@annemarieyeretzian @sleepy-insomnia-bear @mightypike @girldalf @greatnightbat @mollymauk-widogast @laurasbailey @imisskeyleth @laudnasmoon @youremypeople
#i only now realise one of the people i tagged already did it...#its fine#ill enjoy reading that one already
