Hey, Portland folks! Curious Gallery hasn't yet arisen from its ashes, but another great local event is returning for a one-day appearance! GEAR Con, Portland's Steampunk convention, will be featuring a day of mad art, weird science, and adversarial tea-time (attention, tea duellers!) this upcoming Saturday, September 30, from 12pm - 9pm. Festivities will be held at Experiment PDX, 1421 SE Stark Street. More details at PDXGEARCon.com

The creative juices haven't been flowing too readily for a few months. The ol' noggin hasn't been conjuring up new sculptural or costume ideas for what seems like ages*. I don't believe that creative wells truly run dry, but I'll be darned if it wasn't starting to feel that way. BUT, I sense a change in the wind. I had an inspiring, rejuvenating weekend at Portland's Curious Gallery PDX art festival, and for the first time in almost a year I filled more than one page in my sketchbook with new designs - three pages, to be precise. I still can't say how much will end up being made into real projects, but just putting pencil to paper and feeling excited about what I was planning out was a ... relief. There will certainly be some new beasties showing their creepy mugs around here. Definitely some new costume creations, some building upon my Grimma Lynn steampunky OC costume as well as a FNAF cosplay and HOPEFULLY a ghastly Halloween costume. As I really want to improve my 2D sketching and painting skills, there may be a fair bit of that, too. Stay tuned... *Not that I don't have 11+ large notebooks full of promising possibilities, but usually it has has been a constant raging torrent of ideas for future projects rather than a glorified dripping faucet as of late, if we're going for water metaphors. I also haven't had the drive to start on any of those older ideas, which has been a big part of the problem, too.

A preserved sheep’s eye, an unearthly color of lipstick, and a few carnivorous plants: the spoils from the first day at Curious Gallery PDX, a Portland convention centered around wunderkammer, also known as cabinets of curiosity! http://www.curiousgallerypdx.com
It’s been a great little convention with a nice assortment of presentations, workshops, art demonstrations and even some musical performances! I attended a workshop where we dissected a sheep’s eyeball (hello, middle school memories) and another on raising carnivorous plants in the Pacific Northwest, and I even got to bring home some specimens for my own makeshift wunderkammer (in the background of this photo)! Plus, the vendor area is little but pretty great, and I got a tube of Portland Black Lipstick Company’s ‘Dark Timeline,’ a nearly black lipstick with an undertone of metallic purple. Would absolutely recommend, and not just because Kim, the owner, seems to be a lovely person. https://www.etsy.com/shop/pdxblacklipstickco
This is the convention’s third year, and while the crowds have been pretty small there’s a lot of potential for it to grow significantly. Really, I think anyone with a hearty interest in the natural sciences, unusual art, wildlife-spotting, taxidermy, plant husbandry, and the history of any of these fields would find it fascinating.
Here’s to another great day and hopefully to the future success of this wonderful eclectic convention!
