Understanding Breast Cancer Treatment: Exploring Surgeries and Therapies
Tumblr media
Breast cancer is a serious illness that requires careful treatment. There are different ways to treat breast cancer, including surgeries and therapies. In this article, we'll look at the types of surgeries and therapies used to treat breast cancer. We'll explain what they are, how they work, and why they're important.
Types of Surgeries:
Lumpectomy: A lumpectomy is a surgery where doctors remove the tumor and a small amount of surrounding healthy tissue from the breast. It's often used for early-stage breast cancer to help keep as much of the breast as possible.
Mastectomy: Mastectomy is when doctors remove the whole breast to treat breast cancer. There are different types of mastectomy, depending on how much tissue is removed.
Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy: This surgery helps doctors see if the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes. Doctors find and remove a few lymph nodes to check for cancer cells.
Types of Therapies:
Radiation Therapy: Radiation therapy uses special beams to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. It's often used after surgery to make sure any leftover cancer cells are gone.
Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is when patients take special drugs to kill cancer cells or stop them from growing. It's used before or after surgery to help get rid of cancer cells and prevent them from coming back.
Hormone Therapy: Hormone therapy blocks hormones that can make breast cancer grow. It's used for hormone-sensitive breast cancer to stop cancer cells from growing.
Targeted Therapy: Targeted therapy attacks specific parts of cancer cells to stop them from growing. It's a newer type of treatment that can be very effective for certain types of breast cancer. Combination Therapies:
Neoadjuvant Therapy: This therapy is given before surgery to shrink tumors and make them easier to remove. It helps make surgery more successful.
Adjuvant Therapy: Adjuvant therapy is given after surgery to help lower the risk of cancer coming back. It can include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or targeted therapy.
Conclusion: Breast cancer treatment is complex, but there are many ways to fight it. Surgeries and therapies play a big role in helping people beat breast cancer. By understanding the different types of surgeries and therapies available, patients and their doctors can work together to come up with the best treatment plan for each person. With the right treatment, many people with breast cancer can go on to live long, healthy lives.

Cervical cancer is a significant health issue for women in Hyderabad, India. However, with advancements in medical science, there are more treatment options available. Dr. Chinnababu, a renowned oncologist, is leading the way in providing effective treatments for cervical cancer patients in Hyderabad.
What is Cervical Cancer?
Cervical cancer starts in the cells of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus. It is usually caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), but other factors like smoking and weakened immune systems can also contribute. Early detection is crucial for successful treatment.
Diagnosis
In Hyderabad, doctors use various tests to diagnose cervical cancer. These include Pap smears, HPV testing, colposcopy, and biopsy. These tests help doctors determine the stage and severity of the cancer, which guides treatment decisions.
Treatment Options
Treatment for cervical cancer depends on the stage of the disease and the patient's overall health. In Hyderabad, patients have access to several treatment options:
Surgery: Surgery may be recommended for early-stage cervical cancer. It can involve removing the cancerous tissue or the entire uterus. Dr. Chinnababu specializes in minimally invasive surgeries, which have shorter recovery times and fewer complications.
Radiation Therapy: Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells. It can be delivered externally or internally through brachytherapy. Hyderabad has advanced radiation therapy equipment to deliver precise treatment.
Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. It can be given alone or in combination with other treatments. Dr. Chinnababu designs personalized chemotherapy plans for each patient.
Targeted Therapy: Targeted therapy targets specific molecules involved in cancer growth. It can be used for advanced or recurrent cervical cancer. Immunotherapy is a type of targeted therapy that boosts the body's immune system to fight cancer cells.
Conclusion
Cervical cancer treatment in Hyderabad offers hope for patients. Dr. Chinnababu and his team are dedicated to providing the best care possible. If you or someone you know is diagnosed with cervical cancer, don't hesitate to seek medical advice and explore treatment options available in Hyderabad. Early detection and personalized treatment plans can improve outcomes and quality of life for cervical cancer patients.

In Memoriam
Before I proceed, I want to put warnings--content/trigger warnings. In this post, there will be references to cancer (also, fuck cancer), death, biological processes, grief/loss.
When we think of cancer, when we speak of it, I've noticed often times the phrase "evil", "monster", or some other dark term is used. Because it seems to be such a merciless, cruel thing to happen to people. It seems to strike without reason, taking the best and worst of us, young or old....
Today marks 18 years since my mother passed away from cervical cancer. She didn't have to die, not really. In a way, she chose to.
You see, my mother had an intense mistrust of "mainstream" medicine. I'm not sure where it came from, honestly. It was... it was a slow conversion. She kept turning to alternative means to treat problems, mainly our day-to-day diet (lord, we went vegan, Atkins-like before Atkins was widely known anyway), and various other kinds to "cure" our ailments, never accepting that some things can't be fixed by diet alone!). Then she kind of went off the deep end....
When she learned she had serious fibroids, she decided to try different "healing" creams to balance out her hormones, convinced it'd "dissolve" the fibroids. When she began to have heavy, intense bleeding, she chalked it up to the fibroids and not other issues.
Such as an abnormal pap smear test result... that she never followed up on.
It'd continue for years.
She even turned to an alternative doctor who told her yes, he saw the fibroids... but he also saw some seriously bad stuff. This doctor told my mother to go see her ob-gyn and get this checked out.
She wouldn't... up until she collapsed from the heavy bleeding in a grocery store bathroom stall. She finally turned to mainstream medicine, got it checked, got the biopsy....
It was Stage 2 cervical cancer.
She was referred to an oncologist. He, of course, brought up chemo and radiation. She refused, wanting to try alternative treatments first. He accused her of having a death wish (I was there, I wish I was joking!). He basically burned that bridge with that approach.
I can't help but think that... if he had said "Okay, I'll work with you. How about we monitor the cancer as you try it for a couple of months? If there's no improvement, will you try chemo and radiation then?"
Maybe she would've accepted it. I don't know.
So she turned to "mistletoe extract" injections. For a little bit, it looked like it was working. She was doing better.
Then... she developed increasing pain in her right leg. The doctor who originally told her to go see her ob-gyn stressed to her it was likely her cancer growing and getting worse. She didn't listen.
Then... she had increasing pain. Increasing issues. She got thinner... paler. She was so stubborn. There's numerous trips to the ER where they just prescribed her pain killers and sent her on her way. It took a referral to a specialist (I can't remember what they handled, maybe a different oncologist?)... and the blunt message.
"You're terminal."
I wept. My mother... she was just resigned. She transferred to home hospice care. She didn't want to die in a strange building. So my elder brother and I--we were living with her at the time--took turns caring for her.
She stopped eating. Stopped drinking. She's put on IV fluids and a kind of controlled dilaudid treatment. One night... it's as if she's aware. Her mind was going. She said her final goodbyes.
Then it's just her shell, her body, for two and a half weeks, that lingers, stubbornly. I'm the only one who was there who witnessed her last passage, the "death throes".
February 8, 2007. Just a few weeks shy of my 27th birthday.
She never got to see me graduate from college. She never got to see me married.... or divorced. She never saw me become a mother. She never saw me become a survivor, a fighter. So many things.
I have her eyes, I'm told. A deep brown with a starburst iris. My son has those eyes too. I resemble her greatly, I'm told. I don't have her curly hair... or her thinner nose.
Instead, she gave me her creativity, her love of art and writing. She loved books and reading. She loved cats as well, which I definitely inherited.
She had a lot of regrets... and sorrows.
I don't know if there is an afterlife. My relationship with God (or the Divine or whatever you want to call it) is complicated, to say the least. If there is, I hope I see her... and have the conversations we never had but should've while she was alive.
I miss you, mom. So very much.

Yesterday was my sixth month post-op date.
On the one hand it's been absolutely wild to me that I went through such a major surgery and returned to living my normal life almost two months out from the surgery. But at the same time, I'm still dealing with some issues. And any time I start to get frustrated I have to remind myself that I had organs removed, scar tissue and endo lesions cut out, an ovary drained, and cysts removed. That takes *time* to heal, and sometimes it's that last 5% that takes the longest.
Scar tissue has formed again, which I knew would happen. I can feel it pulling on my left side when I breath to deep or move in a certain way. I can also feel it behind my belly button, tugging away now and again to remind me of the surgery. I can still feel gas bubbles sliding over my old sutures and that hurts. Like. A lot. My lower half still gets sore now and again, especially after walking for too long or sitting for too long. I think I'm gonna go to a pelvic floor therapist soon, but I keep balking at the price.
As for my health? Better in some respects, but much the same in others. I don't regret the surgery in the slightest - not having to worry about bleeding ever again, dramatically decreasing my risk for ovarian cancer, and completely eliminating cervical cancer chances is a great boon. And my digestion feels way better - I can actually eat spicy food!
But a part of me wishes that this was a cure, even though I knew it wasn't. I'm sometimes struck with the reality that this is a *lifelong* condition, and even removing organs and lesions and other detritus isn't a cure. But I also take care to remember that we're on the frontier of endo treatment - it's going to get better and better with each passing year. At least, I have to hope it will. And maybe in the future there will be a cure, and maybe they'll be people who are diagnosed after me that won't have to resort to the extremes I did to get some relief. Maybe one day it'll be as easy as getting a preventative vaccine, and people won't ever be diagnosed with this disease.
As for now, I continue to heal, to educate, and to support. I open myself up to questions from anyone and everyone, trying to dispel some of the myths and satisfy people's curiosity. I should get a shirt that says 'Ask Me About my Vaginal Cuff'.
And for those who have been supporting me these last six months - thank you 💗

I’m rereading your bvd/cci/eds/migraine posts with interest, bc I’m coming at it from the other direction—cervical spine degeneration and my body’s compensation attempts being the cause of the vision and other neurological symptoms, where you seem to experience that compensating for the vision problems exacerbates the issues with your spine.
Did you end up trying the preemptive bracing, since you found that monthly hormone changes caused eds flareups and migraines? What kind of brace, if you don’t mind saying?
And do you find that chiropractic adjustments help or hurt more than massage?
Not asking you for medical expertise, but it is so nice to hear from people who are speaking from the lived experience.
Thank you!
.
I haven’t tried bracing my neck yet, no. I doubled down on cervical stability exercises in PT and that seems to be helping a bit more. (Though I am still on the lookout for a brace that doesn’t break me out in hives.)
And no, chiropractic adjustments of the neck are never recommended for anyone, but especially not for anyone with cervical instability issues. I found this out after a neck adjustment tore all the muscles in my neck and required me to have an MRI to look for a possible brain bleed after I started developing neurological symptoms from the injury. I was bedridden for weeks.
This was not a “bad” or wrongly performed adjustment: it’s just the risk of having your neck adjusted.
It’s been 5 years and I still don’t have full stability on the right side of my neck and often get tingling numbness on that side.
The spinal specialist I saw for my recovery told me he used to primarily see people with brain injuries from car crashes and construction accidents. Now most of his primary patients are people who saw chiropractors and had their necks adjusted.
I still sometimes see a chiropractor for mid and lower back adjustments, and my hips because those pop out of place fairly often and my chiro is better at getting them back in than the local urgent care, but my person uses gentle stretching motions rather than the more abrupt cracking motions. She also refuses to touch anyone’s neck ever. There are far too many vital nerves and blood vessels there to risk it. The fact that she knows this makes me feel safe entrusting my pain management to her.
Massage and physical therapy are how I manage my issues the best.
Mysofascial release therapy has been very helpful for me in reclaiming a lot of my range of motion, breaking up muscle adhesions and building healthy soft tissue. There’s some new-agey bullshit claims about it, but if you find someone who knows how to do it and who doesn’t believe the “cures cancer” horseshit (claims some chiropractors also make) it can be beneficial.
The real long term progress, however, has been from regular physical therapy from providers who know how to deal with my hypermobility.

Before I get into this post I want to make it abundantly clear that I fullheartedly support trans people. Trans women are women and trans men are men, so don't get it fucking twisted.
But we need to abolish this idea that biological sex doesn't matter because there are very valid reasons where your birth sex is incredibly important. There are X and Y linked disorders that favor or are exclusive to each sex. No amount of hormones in the world will cure things like hemophilia A, Hunter Syndrome, Turner Syndrome, or Duchenne muscular dystrophy. If you are a trans man, you are at risk for things like ovarian cancer or cervical cancer, and trans women have to worry about prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Fortunately, most of these worries can be abetted with gender affirming care, but this isn't accessible to everyone, especially in the United States. I deeply sympathize with anyone who experiences gender dysphoria but you need to take care of your health. Better to face temporary discomfort in the waiting room of your doctor's office than to die prematurely.
If it helps, HIPAA means that your physician cannot give anyone your medical history without consent. As long as you don't say anything, no one there will know you're trans or that you're there for sex specific healthcare. As far as anyone knows, the trans man sitting in the waiting room of an OBGYN is merely an expecting father or a relative of someone getting care. Either way, it's none of their goddamn business.

Family of Henrietta Lacks settles lawsuit with biotech giant, lawyer says
Tumblr media
The family of Henrietta Lacks, a Black woman whose cancer cells were used without permission to form the basis of decades of scientific research, has reached a settlement with the biotech company Thermo Fisher Scientific.
The cells, known as HeLa cells, were taken from Lacks without her knowledge or consent in 1951 when she was seeking cervical cancer treatment at Johns Hopkins, in Baltimore. Doctors discovered that the cells doubled every 20 to 24 hours in the lab instead of dying. They were the first human cells that scientists successfully cloned, and they have been reproduced infinitely ever since.
Lacks herself died in 1951, but her cells continued to be used after her death in research that led to a series of medical advancements, including in the development of the polio vaccine and in treatments for cancer, HIV/AIDS, leukemia and Parkinson's disease. Lacks' family only found out about it decades later.
Lacks' story reached millions of Americans through the nonfiction bestseller "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," which was made into an HBO movie starring Oprah Winfrey as Lacks' daughter, Deborah.
In 2021, Lacks' estate filed a lawsuit against Thermo Fisher Scientific, alleging that the company was mass producing and selling tissue taken from Lacks even after it became well-known that the materials had been taken from her without her consent. The suit was filed exactly 70 years after Lacks' death.
"Thermo Fisher Scientific has known that HeLa cells were stolen from Ms. Lacks and chose to use her body for profit anyway," the lawsuit alleged. It has been previously reported that Thermo Fisher Scientific said they generate about $35 billion in annual revenue. In the lawsuit, Lacks' estate asked that the company "disgorge the full amount of its net profits obtained by commercializing the HeLa cell line to the Estate of Henrietta Lacks."
The suit also sought an order stopping the company from using the HeLa cells without the estate's permission. The terms of Tuesday's settlement were not made public, but Crump said in a news conference that both parties were "pleased" to have resolved the matter outside of court, CBS Baltimore reported. (except taken from KERRY BREEN CBS NEWS , 2023 )

SOME CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE HELA CELLS
-HeLa cells were first used to study the growth and spread of poliomyelitis virus, the cure of Polio
-HeLa cells have also been instrumental in the development of Human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccines.
-Over the years, HeLa cells have been infected with various types of viruses including HIV, Zika, herpes, and mumps
-HeLa cells have been used in a number of cancer studies, including those involving sex steroid hormones such as estradiol, estrogen, and estrogen proliferation.
-Hela cells contribute to scientists Joe Hin Tjio and Albert Levan to develop better techniques for staining and counting chromosomes. This was important for the study of developmental disorders such as down syndrome that involved the number of chromosomes.
-HeLa cells were sent on the first satellite and human space missions to determine the long term effects of space travel on living cells and tissue.
-HeLa cell line was derived for use in cancer research. and human papillomavirus 18 (HPV18) to human cervical cells created the HeLa genome, which is different from Henrietta Lacks’ genome in various ways,
-The complete genome of the HeLa cells was sequenced and published on 11 March 2013[46][47] without the Lacks family’s knowledge
-HeLa cells as a tool to uncover the machinery required and process used for invasion of human cells. Researchers have also investigated the stability of the virus’s genomic material in HeLa cells by comparing its genomic material with that of many other viruses. The use of HeLa cells in COVID-19 research has provided insights on the molecular mechanics of SARS-CoV-2019 and the components required for infection.

A LASTING CONTRIBUTION TO THE WORLD
When Henrietta Lacks and her cells alerted the world to the existence of immortal human cells, opportunities arose for research and medical treatment development.
Today, her cells continue to serve academic and industrial institutions. So much so that she has been described as the Mother of Modern Medicine in a painting by artist Kadir Nelson in 2017.
The use of HeLa cells in COVID-19 research is a testament to Henrietta Lacks’s lasting contribution to provide microscopic tools for scientific discoveries that billions have benefitted from thus far and will benefit from in the future to come.

I was going to talk about the two patients with vertebral artery dissections and one with a severe cervical ligament sprain after being "treated" by chiropractors that I have seen in the last two months alone, but I was reminded of The CAM Brainrot Patient instead
For background, I am an Emergency Medicine physician. Also, and relevant to the story, I have Raynaud's, a syndrome of poor blood circulation in the hands and feet, so my hands are often cold.
Several years ago, I saw a patient with severe neck pain without a history of trauma. After imaging, it was discovered that she had fractured three vertebra in her cervical spine, one severely enough that she needed surgery. The reason? They were what's called "pathologic" fractures, which are fractures you get (generally with no or minimal trauma) when your bones have been severely weakened from cancer.
It turned out that eight years before, she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. As is often the case with breast cancer, it was early in the course, and she could have been treated solely with surgery, with the option of adjudicative chemotherapy to reduce the likelihood of recurrence. Instead, she decided to go the CAM route, and treated her cancer solely with "natural" medicine, eschewing all allopathic medicine (and surgery). By the time I saw her, the cancer was metastatic -- it had spread throughout her body, into all her organs and bones. A death sentence, even if she decided on maximal therapy at that time.
I don't remember her just because it's a tragic case that could have been completely avoided. I remember her because, as I started to examine her, I apologized for my cold hands, as I often do. "I have poor circulation in my hands," I said. "I apologize for how cold they are."
"Oh, you know what you need to take for poor circulation?" she said. She then proceeded to spend the next five minutes earnestly telling me about all the herbs and supplements I could take to improve my circulation and "treat" my Raynaud's. "This will be way better than anything you could get at a doctor's office" she told me, with what appeared to be complete sincerity.
And I just -- stared at her. In complete bafflement. I still stare into the middle distance in complete bafflement whenever I think of her. This is a woman who decided to take only "natural" treatments for her cancer and was going to die from it, and even then, even lying in a hospital bed in a cervical collar because her goddamn neck was broken because of her metastatic, previously treatable cancer, she was trying to convince me that if only I took enough turmeric, I would cure a condition that is well understood by modern medical science and already has a treatment that is known to be effective.*
I just. The CAM brainrot was just that deep. The mind boggles.
*Calcium channel blockers.
When you say you're anti-CAM what does that mean? Like what does CAM mean in that context? I genuinely haven't seen that acronym before and I'm assuming you aren't anti-camming as in like the form of sex work
Complimentary and Alternative Medicine.
I am capable of turning off my inner annoying atheist, I am incapable of turning off my inner annoying quackwatcher.
I have had real life fights with people I genuinely love about this and I do not regret it. I will absolutely not regret shitting all over someone's $500 herbalist certification.

Early Signs of Cervical Cancer You Should Never Ignore
Cervical cancer is a serious health condition that affects women worldwide. The good news is that it can be treated successfully if detected early. But how do you know if you have cervical cancer? What are the signs and symptoms of cervical cancer? In this blog, we will explain the early warning signs in simple words so that anyone, even a fifth-grade child, can understand.
What is Cervical Cancer?
Cervical cancer happens when the cells in the cervix grow abnormally and form a tumor. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. Most cases of cervical cancer are caused by a virus called Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Regular check-ups with a gynaecologist can help detect this cancer early.
Early Signs of Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer does not always show symptoms in its early stages. However, some warning signs should never be ignored. Here are the most common ones:
1. Unusual Vaginal Bleeding
If you notice bleeding between periods, after sex, or after menopause, it could be an early sign of cervical cancer. Healthy women do not bleed outside their menstrual cycle unless there is another medical reason. If this happens, consult a gynaecologist immediately.
2. Abnormal Vaginal Discharge
Every woman has vaginal discharge, but if you notice an unusual smell, color, or consistency, it could be a sign of an infection or cervical cancer. If the discharge is watery, thick, or has blood in it, do not ignore it.
3. Pain During Intercourse
Experiencing pain while having sex is not normal. It could be due to an infection, dryness, or in some cases, cervical cancer. If this problem persists, you should visit a gynaecologist for a proper check-up.
4. Pelvic or Lower Back Pain
If you feel pain in your pelvis or lower back without any injury or other known reason, it could be a warning sign. Persistent pain in these areas may indicate problems with the cervix.
5. Trouble Urinating or Blood in Urine
Cervical cancer can sometimes press against the bladder, making it difficult to pass urine. If you experience pain while urinating or notice blood in your urine, see a gynaecologist immediately.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Cervical Cancer in Later Stages?
If cervical cancer is not detected early, it can spread to other parts of the body. Symptoms in later stages include:
Swelling in the legs
Weight loss without trying
Fatigue or extreme tiredness
Loss of appetite
How Can You Prevent Cervical Cancer?
Prevention is always better than cure. Here are some ways to reduce the risk of cervical cancer:
Get regular Pap smear tests – This test helps detect abnormal cell changes in the cervix early.
Get the HPV vaccine – It protects against the virus that causes most cervical cancers.
Practice safe sex – Using protection can lower the risk of HPV infection.
Maintain a healthy lifestyle – A good diet and exercise can boost your immune system.
Quit smoking – Smoking weakens the immune system and increases the risk of cervical cancer.
When Should You See a Gynaecologist?
If you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above, do not wait. Book an appointment with a gynaecologist as soon as possible. Early detection saves lives. Regular check-ups can help diagnose any issues before they become serious.
