Non-metric baking an introduction to figuring out what the fuck a cup is

This came up in conversation so I'm reposting here because evidentially this is enigmatic lore that I just have rolling around my brain that isn't common knowledge. The trick to determining what a cup is understanding there are five distinct cups ranging in size between 200mL and 285mL that are used in recipies depending on when and where the recipe was made. Here is the algorithm to figure out which cup is which

If the recipe is from the US at any point or britain/the british colonies before 1824 use US customary cup (236mL) or US legal cup (240mL)

If the recipe is from after 1824 in britain or in the british colonies between 1824 and the end of WWII it is the imperial cup (284mL)

If the recipe is from a fromer british colony after WWII (especially Canada) it is often times the metric cup (250mL) but may also be the imperial cup depending on when and the specific country

If it is from the US in the 1970s or 1980s it is probably not but may be the metric cup as the metric system was a fad here in the 70s and 80s

Also if it is from Asia especially Japan it is likely the Japanese imperial cup that is 200mL though some newer recipes use the metric cup that is 250mL

Cooking and baking

A small pet peeve of mine with cooking and baking is when recipes say the container rather than the amount

Like, instead of saying "500ml of cream" you say "a pot of cream". Or "a whole can of corn". Like okay which kind of can??? What amount???? Corn comes in more than one size you can't just tell me a can. PLEASE i am begging you tell me the WEIGHT

This is especially a problem with recipes from different countries, for example America. Because your stick of butter is different to our butter. STOP SAYING STICK OF BUTTER TELL ME THE QUANTITY IN GRAMS PLEASE I HAVE A FAMILY

that being said I feel like I see this crop up in like american recipes in particular. Idk if I've ever seen a recipe in one of our cookbooks that does this....

anyway please just tell me the gosh darn weight I am dying here I have a family I JUST NEED TO KNOW THE WEIGHT

ML Headcanons/Ideas (Mostly Marinette centered)

•Marinette gets tired of all the akuma designs and decides to make a line of clothing based off of the akumas. Whether it be looks, theme or their name.

She goes back and starts at the beginning with Stone Heart and just speedruns through them all until current.

At first, people were mad, but when she explained the reasoning behind it they found it kind of funny and hey. The designs are freaking fantastic. Many of the people who were said akuma ask for an outfit that was based off their akuma as a means to miss off Hawkmoth. It makes them feel empowered. Plus she adds some kind of secret bonus if the person wearing the outfit was the akuma.

The line becomes known as Akumanette (a different take to the akumanette)

• Marinette and her parents always take a trip to China to visit family, and Marinette and her father have a little tradition of finding new food or restaurant to try every time they go.

Sabine’s family is from Shanghai, so Marinette DOES know Mandarin and is fluent, but one of her first languages, along with French, was actually Shanghainese. (There will be no white boy teaching her her family's language. That was a big ick for me.)

Marinette and Marc are cousins and this trip is also taken at the same time as his family as a sort of yearly family reunion.

Her and Marc and all their other cousins (there are so many since some aren't actually cousins but because they are all close in age they just call each other cousin) get to have some time at Shanghai Disneyland.

Marinette always makes custom ears for her and Marc to wear and custom shirts for all the cousins so they are all easier to see.

• Marinette and Rolland have special days where Marinette introduces her grand-père to something new while he intoduces her to something old.

Sometimes, they even go to museums together and plan a picnic if they do.

They keep each other updated. She tells him of what he missed of her life, and he tells her stories of Tom when he was young. Sometimes, he just talks about his past and their family history.

They are taking this slow since they don't want Rolland to have another shock from the modern world.

• Marc used to be one of Marinette’s first models for her designs.

But Marinette was also one of his first readers/listeners. When they had sleepovers, Marc would make up a story before they went to bed if he wasn't in the mood to read from his many storybooks. Marinette loved it.

My latest tarot card - the Page of Ice Creams (explanation below image)

This replaces the traditional Page of Cups. Cups are the suit of water and therefore all about emotions, dreams, the subconscious, etc.

Pages are newly to their suit - in this case, just dipping a toe into that water and not yet knowing how to swim in its depths.

Putting it all together, I always see the Page of Cups as wearing his heart on his sleeve but unsure how to manage or express emotion effectively - or, if drawn in reverse, struggling to tap into the deeper self. There's a naivete to it, and a yearning for greater self-understanding and connection with the wider world.

Felix is definitely in this space in S5, most perfectly illustrated when he draws that heart on Kagami's hotel window.

                Marinette had a memory of Luka in the kitchen that morning, smiling that slow, sweet smile of his as he handed her a mug, and his voice a little rough with lack of sleep as he asked, “Coffee, Melody?”
