I think it has been performed multiple times in Chinese idol industry (and yes, that is one of the main reasons why a lot of Chinese idols are shitty as hell)

To be honest, I didn't expect cleansing would happen here in CE fandom but jokes on me😅

Back to cleansing. It happened a lot to idol who were famous for their RPS "couple" which their fans shipped at the beginning. The "couple" are usually pr-ed, looking like there's a deep brothership bond between two male idols. After gaining a certain amount of fans by pretending they are "good buddies" (which the fans would incline to believe there's "real" bromance between the two), one of the idols would choose to cleanse the fans because he only needs the fans who are into him instead of into the other idol and/or into this fake relationship. In other words, the idol who starts cleansing needs the fans who are willing to pay for him, buy the products he's promoting, buy the album he's singing for, buy buy buy.

Different idols have different ways of cleansing. But one of the most infamous examples happened on Xiao Zhan (肖战）.

What Xiao Zhan and his team did, is to have his team write a RPF of Xiao Zhan and his bromance "partner" Wang Yibo, posting the RPF on Ao3. Then, one of Xiao Zhan's fans found it. The fan happened to be one of the more influencing fans of Xiao Zhan fandom. By encouraging other Xiao Zhan fans to report this piece of RPF smut to the censorship, they were successful in discouraging and cleansing those fans who are into this bromance relationship.

What makes Xiao Zhan notorious to normal people, is that by his action of encouraging his team to "cleanse", his fans have also been successful in banning Ao3 from Chinese access (when they reported it to the censorship). And it was not long before he started selling his album, when his fans told the other fans (who were basically brainwashed at this point) that "there's no others to support our Xiao Zhan but us" and "if you truly love him, buy a hundred copies of his digital album, it will cost no more than a couple bubble tea" and "if you are already working and supporting yourself, you should buy a thousand copies of his digital album, as it costs no more than a lipstick you would buy for yourself".

The said digital album contains only one song, and is sold half a dollar per album.

And that is why, nearly three years later, Xiao Zhan is still hated by a lot of people (me included) for conducting the cleanse.
