Reviving Tradition: The Surge of Scottish Craftsmanship in Global Markets
Exploring the Renaissance of Scottish Craftsmanship in the Global Market Hello, dear readers! Today, we turn our focus towards the revitalisation of Scottish craftsmanship and its burgeoning role in the global marketplace. As Scotland embraces the rich tapestry of its artisan traditions, it simultaneously carves out a niche in a world increasingly dominated by mass production and standardisation. Scottish craftsmanship, renowned for its quality and authenticity, spans an impressive array of industries, from textiles to woodworking and distilling. These artisans are not merely preserving ancient techniques; they are innovating within traditional frameworks to create products that resonate both locally and worldwide. In the age of globalisation, there is a growing appetite for products that tell a story — items that are unique and meticulously crafted. Scotland’s artisans are leveraging this trend, positioning their goods on the global stage as the epitome of quality and sustainability. This movement not only boosts local economies but also reinforces Scotland’s identity in the international arena. Economically, the artisan sector in Scotland benefits from the propagation of free-market principles, allowing craftsmen to tap into wider markets and attract investments. These small-scale producers are finding their niches, supported by policies that encourage cultural entrepreneurship and an export-oriented strategy. However, challenges such as international competition, the need for marketing prowess, and navigating the complexities of export regulations need to be addressed. To aid this, fostering collaborations between artisans and tech innovators could offer advanced solutions in logistics and marketing, vital for international success. I invite you all to share your experiences and thoughts about Scottish craftsmanship. How do you perceive the role of tradition in contemporary markets? What further steps should be taken to enhance the global presence of Scottish artisan products? Your insights are invaluable as we explore strategies to ensure that Scottish craftsmanship not just survives but thrives on the world stage. Let’s continue to champion our local artisans by engaging with their work and spreading the word about Scotland’s rich heritage and its modern-day renaissance. Thank you for joining in this pertinent discussion. Looking forward to your views! Warm regards, Alastair Majury *Perspectives Unbound* --- *Follow Alastair Majury for more insights on how Scotland’s rich traditions and free-market dynamics interact to shape a unique narrative in the global economy.*

NYFA and IBM Host Cultural Entrepreneurship Symposium
Tumblr media
Event brought art, business, academic, and government leaders together to explore the critical intersection of arts and business.
The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) partnered with IBM to host Inform: A Symposium on Cultural Entrepreneurship, on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at IBM Client Center in Manhattan. The invite-only symposium explored the critical intersection of arts and business, and featured talks, panels, and interactive sessions led by an esteemed lineup of art, business, academic, and government leaders. The day’s programming was shaped by significant input from the leadership of Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
Event participants converged to analyze how the arts and artists can reshape business’ ability to differentiate their products and better connect with the needs and tastes of consumers. They also examined the growing role of arts-based businesses and the impact of arts and culture on the broader economy.
Speakers and panelists included:
Phil Gilbert, General Manager of Design, IBM
Michael L. Royce, Executive Director, NYFA
Judith K. Brodsky, Board Chair, NYFA
Jane Chu, Chair, NEA
Beth Comstock, former Vice Chair, GE
Sebastian Cwilich, Co-Founder, Artsy
Joe Gebbia, Co-Founder, Airbnb
Robert L. Lynch, President and CEO, Americans for the Arts
Nitin Nohria, Dean, Harvard Business School
Marie Paule Roudil, Director, UNESCO
Christopher Rothko, Board Chair, Rothko Chapel
Dread Scott, Artist, NYFA Board Member, and NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow
Tom Scott, Co-Founder, The Nantucket Project
Rosanne Somerson, President, RISD
Michael Spalter, Board Chair, RISD
Maggie Williams, former Director, Harvard Institute of Politics, and Partner, Griffin Williams Critical Point Management
Martha Wilson, Founder, Franklin Furnace, and NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow
Andre Woolery, Co-Founder, BlckPrism (part of NYFA’s Arts Business Incubator)
Dustin Yellin, Founder, Pioneer Works
“There is an opportunity for cultural entrepreneurship right now, as the intersection of man, machine, and environment is as complex as it’s ever been,” said Phil Gilbert, General Manager of Design, IBM. “The question of how you understand and help humanity through science, through a mastery of your environment, requires great empathy and truly interdisciplinary collaboration,” he added.
As part of the symposium, NYFA and IBM will publish a white paper on the relationship between artists and cultural creatives and business. It will focus on the practitioners of cultural entrepreneurship—accomplished and aspiring individuals and institutions—while seeking to identify the patterns, principles, and behaviors they share. Stay tuned to NYFA Current for key takeaways from Inform: A Symposium on Cultural Entrepreneurship and the resulting white paper.
NYFA’s Arts Business Incubator, a program that supports NYC start-ups with intensive training in the fundamentals of starting and running an arts-based business, was launched in 2015 to connect arts and business in significant and compelling ways. Since lauching, the program has worked with more than a dozen artists and organizations seeking to create sustainable models to support their work.

IN 2014, I attended the CREARE foundation workshop on Value of Culture. This year, I am an instructor in their first US-based seminar at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. If you want to know what I learned from CREARE, why I am now part of the team, and what insight the workshop provides, check out the short video I recorded.

Bimo which was the figure of wayang performance presented last ngiht was given by the head of Dukuh for our dalang. Dalang is a Javanese call for the person who plays the puppets. Griya Jati Rasa 's dalang is a women therefore we call the dalang edan. What is Social Justice?
Social justice means so many different things to different people. You can see this by simply interviewing 10 people and asking them what social justice means to them. In my interviews the majority instantly thought of women's rights. This makes sense since last week Emma Watson gave a speech at a UN meeting, inspiring millions of men and women. While others thought of human rights, hunger, and poverty. It's really interesting to hear the different views of a basic term that we use everyday.

Business Model for the Young Social Entrepreneur?
Tumblr media
Graffiti on the Bank of the River Jhelum, Srinagar
This graffiti by an anonymous artist captures the sentiment on our minds when we wrote down a business plan for Crafted in Kashmir as part of a class on social entrepreneurship.
Crafted in Kashmir was on paper a non-profit organization dedicated to generating better socio-economic outcomes for the weavers and spinners of Kashmir. Though we remain committed to this goal, we decided to work on a for-profit model within a week of starting work in the real world and this has most definitely been for the better. Having highly skilled artisans who practice a world famous craft ask for charity! - that should have sounded wrong from the beginning. But that's the classroom for you.
Many things antagonized us during our research. The 'middleman' being the foremost of our concerns. But why should we direct our ire at a group of people who provide facilities most crucial to working in a disorganized sector marked by a opaqueness in terms of work practices; where constant monitoring is the best way to create a good product and create sustainable employment patterns.
Yes, middlemen deliver an important service and yes often the partnership between the artisan and the middlemen is not a fair one. In fact, middlemen pose serious problems for a cultural entrepreneur that have to do with communicating/translating the vision/idea for a product.
Crafted in Kashmir has worked for the past two years on developing innovative ways to create fair partnerships between ourselves and our artisans while focussing on creating matchless products of the highest quality.
