If you aren't familiar, this is another Korean-only exclusive, but this time it's a bonus item, rather than a wide-release. When I missed it the first time, it was going for $45 shipped. In order to get this one, it cost me $150 shipped, which is ridiculous for what it is.

They did reveal Black/Gold repaints of the Jyuohger stuff. I'll probably end up getting them? Also, it's kinda sad Cube Kirin is the only Weapon Cube that never got a third, exclusive repaint.

This is Vajra Devarath. He's an original species based on an Indian god Shiva. Specifically, Shiva's most dangerous avatar; Rudra, the lord of storms.

There are certain design choices and plot points specific to the god, and to Hinduism as a whole.

The Raudra, as I have called them, have three eyes and four arms. Since they live in cold, mountainous terrain, they are sure-footed and resilient to the cold. Vajra finds Hoth 'a bit chilly' while his crew mates are living ice cubes. On the flip side, Tatooine nearly kills him despite all the water he'd been drinking.

They are also immune to a lot of venoms and toxins native to their world. In addition, there's a story in which Shiva swallows a whole lot of poison in order to stop it from killing all life on his world. This ties in nicely to the already-existing story in the Knight prologue, where the Flesh Raiders (whom I call the Khrayii coz Flesh raiders is a bad name) try to poison Twi'lek crops. I amped it up to a thousand, making the poison one of the deadliest toxins in the galaxy, enough to kill a Twi'lek in seconds. Vajra nearly dies trying to save the village, wading into thick clouds of toxins. He recovers a couple of weeks to get better. So, resistant, but not immune. Oh, and a side-effect of the resistance: he's resistant to all medicines as well. He requires several times the kolto of a regular humanoid for comparable wounds.

Also as a nod to Shiva, Vajra loves dancing. One of Shiva's aspects is 'Nataraja', the lord of the dance.

The Raudra themselves have some stuff in common with Indian mythology and history. A love of art and craft, well planned cities. But they have the dark side too, such as a caste system, which is a little less insidious than it was.

And because of the whole storm god thing, they can channel the Force, but only the Dark Side. And it only happens when family is in danger or dead. They can call down a huge bolt of lightning from the sky (think Sasuke's Kirin in Naruto Shippuden). Few Sith can do this, though my Darth Nox can.

Oh, one last thing about Vajra; although I've drawn him with four Lightsabers, he rarely ever uses more than one in combat. It's a mark of his arrogance; a sign that he's always holding back, even if it costs him victory.

On A Certain Character’s Awakening in Chapter 1072

...Mostly because I’ve seen some comments around in the vein of ‘this character doesn’t deserve it’ or ‘it makes no sense for this character to have it when [insert many other character names here] don’t’ so I wanted to explore that a bit.

So. The major thing we know about what it takes to achieve Awakening a Devil Fruit is that it happens when ‘a user’s mind and body catches up to their powers’--which to me implies a sort of oneness or extreme compatibility with the fruit itself--and the catch for Zoan fruits specifically is that there’s a high chance the animal itself will take control and essentially overpower the user’s mind (which seems to be the case with the jailer beasts at Impel Down).

Does that mean Zoan fruits are easier to Awaken? Potentially, but it seems to come with a pretty major downside, so I don’t think it’s fair to say that as a blanket statement or that it somehow lowers the level of ability required to do it successfully.

Regardless, I think taking what we know of the process and applying it to Kaku’s character, there’s...really no reason why he shouldn’t be able to do it, despite the ‘he’s only had it for two years’ and ‘he’s not important enough’ statements I’ve seen to the contrary.

First off, I hate powerscaling discussions in general because they rarely tell the whole story, but I’m going to bring it up here because we specifically got a chart in the manga telling us how strong the CP9 members were in relation to each other.

Kaku was eighteen when he went to Water 7 and in five years became one of the best shipwrights in the city, and by the time they got back to Enies Lobby he was second in strength only to Lucci so that by itself shows how capable and skilled he is (Jabra does say that this is only a measure of physical strength and adding Devil Fruit powers would only increase it, but Kaku didn’t have his fruit yet at this point anyway).

As for the fruit itself, this is something I’ve been thinking about since Vegapunk revealed that Devil Fruits may well be a manifestation of dreams or desires because Kaku says that it’s not in the encyclopedia he has so it’s not a documented fruit and it’s also...shaped like bananas.

Now this might not seem significant but--and I know the ‘canon’-ness of the Vivre Card databooks specifically is often called into question--bananas are listed as one of Kaku’s favorite foods so we’ve got an unknown fruit shaped like his favorite food that just so happens to give him the power to turn into an animal that he (supposedly, and he’ll tell you himself) loves a lot.

Makes you think, huh.

And while much of his fight with Zoro is played for laughs, looking past the comedy of it he’s legitimately taking an ability he’s had for a few hours at most and creating ways to use it completely on the fly in the middle of a battle:

And more than that, it’s often in ways that complement the training he’s already had as a rokushiki user...to the point where one of the very first things he does is slice the entire Tower of Law in half. 

So if our two requirements for being able to achieve Zoan Awakening are complete fruit compatibility and enough individual skill and strength to take control of the animal instead of letting it control the user, Kaku’s already proven he’s got both of those.

In terms of the actual Awakened form, I’ve seen some people disappointed that he didn’t turn into an even bigger cube and while I understand that, this all leads back to another joke that Oda set up during Whole Cake Island with Smoothie and the giraffe juice (which...I guess Stussy really got a taste for giraffe after this, huh...haha...)

But there’s an SBS that comes after where Oda admits it’s supposed to be a Kirin beer joke because the Japanese word for giraffe being kirin originally comes from qilin, which in Chinese mythology is a horned creature generally depicted as having the body of a horse and the head of a dragon, usually with a mane reminiscent of either clouds or flames.

And while I wish we’d have gotten an actual full body panel of Kaku’s Awakened form (since it’s hard to tell what’s going on while he’s fighting with Zoro) from what we can see, I’m guessing that’s the reference Oda’s making here as well:

...As usual, that was probably far too long, but there you go. This is why I think it’s perfectly reasonable for Kaku to have Awakened his Devil Fruit...even after only two years...even if he’s not technically a ‘major character’...and while at the moment it’s considered rare I’m not discounting the possibility of, just like when Haki became a thing, other characters already being able to do it even if we haven’t seen it or it hasn’t been explicitly stated (yet).

Man, remember when Mugenbine first came out and it had a unique gimmick as a toyline? Man, those were the days. Each one came with a little figure that could curl into a cube and a bunch of different parts to stick on 'em. Each of the parts was themed around one or two things, so you'd have pre-designed builds you could do for, say, a VTOL jet that could rearrange into a Japanese Hercules beetle. A lot of the sets also included parts that had obvious faces on them for larger robots, but no instructions for an intended robot with that face, and since the sets were interchangeable, you could mash up a couple of sets you thought looked rad together and use that robot face with no intended build for it on whatever it was you'd thrown together. It was such a unique and creative line at times, and then after a while it just... turned into model kits that you could combine when you got all the kits in one set, something that's fairly common. Hell, Monster Hunter had a set of four model kits of monsters whose simplified skeletons you could build, and if you got Rathalos, Zinogre, Tigrex, and Kushala Daora, each came with some of the parts for Kirin, plus there were instructions to combine all five monsters. It's like seeing an anime with a unique premise devolve into a Shonen series. Or an Isekai. Or an Isekai Shonen series.

As my scales are sharp and I sometimes lose control, turning Nirik with blazing fire, I’d hate for the outfit to get ruined. Do you think you could you make it resistant to ripping/tearing and burning?

A glow up of my renditions of the skulls of the cursorial monkey trio

I have nothing new to say about them individually but I would like to discuss their strength.

It’s somewhat of a debate on the UHC server about how strong the monkeys, especially rajang, should be. With many saying that if we base them off their closest analogs, gorillas, then they should be weak especially since leopards regularly prey on gorillas and that monkeys in general are rather weak and poor fighters.

But this doesn’t feel like a fair argument to me. Of course a gorilla dies to a leopard. Ambush predation often relies on getting the jump on your prey when they don’t suspect it and killing them before they can react. Also a leopard is a big fucking cat so of course it’s not a fair fight because cats are nuts. Gorillas also don’t have many defensive adaptations beyond group behavior, strength, and intimidation.

Gorillas and humans are also some of the strongest animals proportional to our size. Granted this is partially because we occupy a sweet spot in the square cube law where we’re rather large for megafauna but small enough that we don’t have to dedicate nearly all our strength to supporting our weight, but still. Healthy gorillas and humans can technically benchpress their own weight rather easily, and chimpanzees can regularly beat the crap out of things their size because 2/3rds of their muscle fibers are fast twitch, and said fibers are very long (also chimps are mental but that’s neither here nor there).

Humans in particular also have a secret weapon; hysterical strength (we don’t know if this is a human unique thing though). In our normal state we’re the weakest of the apes partially because we need to do precise movements to complete dexterous tasks, so our brains put a limit on ourselves. But sometimes in extremely stressful situations these limiters are turned off. As anime as this sounds, yes this is real and this is how in extremely rare circumstances people have been able to partially lift cars and physically fend off bears to save others. The only downside is that this also literally rips your body apart, and this is the other reason why your body puts these limitations in place. The average person secretly is strong enough to bite off their own fingers and flex so hard their bones break.

So back to the monhun cursorial monkeys, I do think they’re stronger than people on the UHC server suggest they should be (although maybe not as strong as elders beyond Kirin in the case of rajang, who I agree should not be able to put up a good fight against a starving cetacean sized tyrannosaur). They also forget that the trio do have more defensive and predatory adaptations than most primates. Congalala has long claws and chemical defenses. Blagonga has saber teeth, and ice breath, and throws around projectiles. Rajang has horns, sharp teeth, and likely can consciously achieve hysterical strength or a similar state using its electrical powers. Rajang and Blagonga also punch, which in the case of them is an entirely offensive adaptation (in humans punching originally evolved for intraspecific combat and our flat faces are a product of this).

Hopefully I’ve made a coherent argument for why I think Monkey Strong, but not strong beyond reason.
