29/10/18 | Studio II final project conclusion
All of our contributions were handed in on time and, apart from finding out the text and graphics printer at Warehouse Stationery was down, I feel that it was all too simple.
I’m happy with the team, everything pulled together and all. From my perspective I knew I could have done more. From working alone, trying to implement a solo project, to finding a group, recognising the barriers the very idea held too late, there was so much on my part that didn’t make the final cut. Such problems allowed me to understand how to be realistic, and that was a frequent lesson day by day.
The decision to persist with my own idea was one that I thought would succeed and surpass all else I did. But it generally wasn’t going to happen, and it was my mistake for realising too late. The weeks progressed until all else was replaced by optimism. While this took me steps back from where I needed to be in the project journey, the mistake had led me to be independent, to rely on myself and my skills. I had be critical about how things were going; the situation I was in, the success it held according to the now, the potential for it to jeopardise my assignment. Eventually I was able to acknowledge I couldn’t deliver, so finally the project I envisioned, ended. During this period of working solo was unnerving and full of uncertainty, but when I finally got into a group, that still remained. I’ve been fortunate to be accepted by a team who, with members I have worked with before, know that I have a standard in the work I do. I held on to my independence and enquired on information that needed to be shuttled through the team to myself. I understood the burdens of keeping to myself. Many more personal lessons came to light only through the journey of this final project.
While it isn’t wrong to be ambitious, it pays off to be realistic and seeing such ideas as mine in its entirety. An idea can’t be taken at face value until the idea is faced for some time.

Visuals are getting good
Today was the day for really nailing down some of the aspects of our game. We spent a good amount of time discussing group roles and making sure we all knew what we were doing since we were all here, and then got on to sorting out the level design of our golf course. Yesterday we measured out our space and today I put those measurements to work in some very rudimentary sketches but also on SketchUp to create a model that we could play around with and that was really effective at showing how the proportions of the golf course would be. It also helped us to see what we could add for angles, obstacles, and elevations so that the course would be fun, but also doable fabrication-wise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also did a bit of asking around about how our scoring system should work, and we’ve settled, for now, on a point system when players go through certain obstacles, more points for the harder obstacles. In order to make sure that players aren’t just hogging the course to get the max points, they’ll have to do it in a time frame, and as incentive to get to the hole rather than just get through all the point gates, either the hole will be worth a lot of points or you won’t earn as many for not reaching it in the time. We will have to do plenty of user testing once the course and the game are up and running to make sure that we get the amount of points and the time limits balanced, but we have a rough idea we can use as a kicking off point. We used an example coloured “paths” diagram that Jared quickly drew up that will be our starting point with some simple points to use as a kicking off point.
Tumblr media
I’m glad we came in this morning since it gave us a really well focused couple of hours to discuss and design in a relatively quiet space and we managed to make some healthy progress. Over the weekend we can work on our respective parts and by Tuesday both the Unity game and the course should be underway.

A Chat With Ricardo
Yesterday, we talked to Ricardo, and spoke with him about our ideas about the project. He gave us some pointers on where we should take the project. The thing that stood out the most is that he told us not to reinvent the wheel; meaning that if we were going to go forward with the two games (analog and digital), innovate on an existing game, and do a good job on one side, opposed to an okay job on both.
This relates to our project in the sense that we can take Tetris, a well-known, digital game, and produce a new, physical version of it, that people can have a tactile interaction with. People will then be attracted to the project with the nostalgia of Tetris; they stay due to the new spin on it, and experiencing it in a different light – and hopefully take something new away from it.
He also told us to “poke at the universe,” which we are working on doing.

BCT Year 1 - My Reflection
1/3 throughout my degree, and I found that there were a lot of ups and a lot of downs throughout the year. As a whole, I’d say that I found it all extremely valuable to help me grow as a person and find the motivation to stay sane. When we first started back in February (2017), I came into this degree thinking we would be working with a lot of graphic design, electronics, and virtual reality stuff. I mean I was right with the electronics, but not much with the other two. I now see that stuff is more for years 2 and 3 here, so that’s what I’m really looking forward to in 2018.
When we first started this course, I felt myself feel pretty overwhelmed by the amount of freedom we had for all our projects, like how on the very first day, we were told we needed to make a card game that can adapt anything we wanted. It didn’t necessarily have to be a game either, it could have been a puzzle, trading cards, or even electronic if we really wanted. The reason I found it so overwhelming was because back in high school, all the projects we were given were pretty much set in stone, and there was only one correct way to finish it and get a good grade. Comparing this to the BCT, where we are encouraged to do the complete opposite of normal, it takes a while to adjust to the completely new circumstances. On the topic of comparing the BCT with things, I’d also like to compare it with other university courses: The BCT is so much more different than any other course you could take at a university like engineering, computer science or art design. The BCT integrates a lot of fields into one degree, and this was what really sold me on enrolling. Since I originally had no clue on what I wanted to do after I graduated high school, I figured this would be the perfect thing for me. I like tech, I like art and I like music, so a combination of all of them would theoretically fit me like a glove, and so far it actually is fitting me pretty well. The other students here are also really nice and cool to talk to, as well as the tutors here who are really interesting and have a lot to say. I now see why the briefs are very broad - because that all the briefs have to appeal to a very wide range of people who have different skill sets and interests. They want to be able to have someone who likes making films, and someone who likes making robots be able to get the same grade in the same assessment.
Skipping forward to now, after almost finishing the second semester, I feel that I have grown quite a bit. I don’t know if it’s just because it’s been an extra year in my life, or because of the whole new experience of being at university, but nevertheless, I feel that my mindset has developed and I can sense that I have a better grasp on what I really want to do when I grow up. It’s really hard to tell as of now, because there’s still a lot to learn, and I still have a lot of growing to do in terms of being a creative technologist, as well as a human being. My takeaway from semester 2, is that learning how to form and work in a good team is what will let you succeed in this degree. Learning how to think outside the box is widely encouraged in a creative degree, which means that it is a lot harder to succeed if you don’t have good ideas. In regards to programming - I’ve found that it is 100% NOT my strong suit, and I do not wish to continue doing it next year. I used to study Digital Technologies back in high school, but soon after taking it, I realised i did not enjoy it. I continued with the subject, and even right at the end, I still didn’t like it... Programming aside, overall I’ve found that I have really enjoyed my time here at BCT, and am really excited to see what will happen next year.
The end keeps creeping closer and closer, and I don’t really know how to feel to be honest. I’m glad that the study year is going to be over, but that also means that the only scheduled thing I’d be doing for the next few months is working at Warehouse Stationery.

Studio II Final Submission
Throughout this semester I have learned a great deal bout both project related things and non project related things. I have learned how important it is to choose your team wisely for a group project and also team management skills to keep that group working on track. I have also discovered different workflow strategies to make sure I am at my most productive and also when I need to take a break, for example I now know that I can’t focus solely on Arduino code for a week straight for all of my papers. Having said that though I have learned and further developed my programming skills and have picked up how to program an Arduino. I think the hardest challenge I have had to face this semester is letting other people do the work and trusting that they will get it done. I have always struggled with this as I feel only i know what the quality of the job needs to be but now that I am at university everyone I work with should in theory be at the same level if not better than me when it comes to this so they will have a fair idea as to what the outcome needs to be. What also made this hard for me in this project was that I didn’t really feel I knew my team members well enough, sure I knew Adam but as for the other four (Shane, Josh, Austin and Osamu) I had never really talked to them let alone worked with them so I was not really sure how it would go. I guess that is why it is good to have a blog so you can see what they have done in the past.
If I had to do it all again, I would have worked with a smaller team. That is the main thing I would change simply because it is harder to work with a bigger group especially when things need to happen in a sequence so not everyone can be working on things at the exact same time. Over my last few blog posts i have reflected on the project a little more in depth so you can find those in the index to see some more of my overall reflection on the semester.
Here are the the final videos, the second one is not shown in the installation as it does not suit the whole them of it but shows how the watch reacts to different users and can be used to show their perception of time in different situations.

Conceptual Statement
For this project we set out to bring attention to our objective reality and provoke conversation on whether or not we experience the world to the maximum potential we can. “Tyme” measures the user’s heart rate and then presents their own experience of passing time visually in a way that seems more like a natural process (almost like breathing) rather than a mechanical ticking, this is to bring a air of personalisation to it. We used the human perception of time, or chronoception, to develop an insight for the user into how we as humans have gentrified something so complex as time into a basic standard measure which in reality is not how we experience the world at all. In different situations minutes can feel like hours and hours can feel like seconds as our chronoception is the result of a multitude of external factors that we don’t have a whole lot of control over. By focussing on one single aspect that can affect chronoception (cognitive function linked to heart rate) we are enticing the user to consider our visual representation of their experience of the passage of time but also consider all the other factors that can affect it. Thus in turn forcing them to realise that they are only experiencing a small sliver of the world around them and that there is so much more to our universe that we are unable to comprehend but if we could, our entire objective reality would be a whole lot different. By inciting this conversation we are changing the way people look at things, making them consider their surroundings more critically and developing a greater awareness of their reality.
Contextual Statement
The field of time perception and objective realities is relatively unexplored and for the parts that have been researched, the developed ideas and concepts tend to have very mild crossover and a fair amount of contradictions. That is mainly because not a whole lot is known in the fields and so there is no general consensus yet as to what is correct and what is not. This is where our projects fits nicely, as we are not entirely developing any research in the field but more linking the ideas of time perception and objective reality together. Our project draws inspiration from theories set out by Donald Hoffman and David Eagleman which talk about objective realities and time perception respectively. Hoffman sets out the idea that what we are experiencing as our apparent “objective reality” may not actually be the actual reality that we live in, he says that our brain is taking cues from the actual reality and reconstructing this world that we see (Hoffman, 2015). Eagleman places a huge emphasis on the fact that we do not have physical time receipting organs in our bodies and therefore our chronoception relies heavily on other external factors and our brain then reconstructs what we experience as time from these cues (Eagleman, 2009). There is a large crossover between the two concepts that we set out to link and develop and in doing so we have also produced an artefact that goes about presenting the apparent passage of time to the certain individual who is using the watch. In this sense it is much like the breathing clock designed by Max Schmidt [1], a different way of representing time rather than the monotonous ticking that we have come to think of as standard. The main difference between our project and the breathing clock though is that the breathing clock is more of a countdown timer that you set to whatever time you want, “tyme” interprets the users cognitive state and presents them with their own experience of time passing at that moment, so it is constantly changing. Another project that brings awareness to our experience of time is Durr by Skrekkogle [2] which vibrates every five minutes to make the user aware of how fast time is passing. This idea however, is still bound to the assumption that time passes as seconds, minutes and hours and thus differs from our project which focuses on the idea that time is in fact a personal experience that is different for everyone. Through the development of this concept and artefact we have not only challenged the basic assumptions we make about time but we have actually shown how abstract the idea of time really is and that representing it through standard measures (such as seconds, minutes and hours) is completely inaccurate to how we interact with the world, therefore challenging how we experience our world and perceive reality.

11/10 | part 2 of Thursday
From now on I’ll spend most of my studio hours with the group, leaving devoted work on the pulse sensor in my own time. Therefore in addition, I will be making a physical artefact alongside with them.
We have discussed the option of working on the same dataset, but while that could strengthen the research on one studied area, it wouldn’t encompass the project’s suicide context. It covers mental health, cultural and psychological fields, thus committing to one dataset such as ethnicity wouldn’t be good enough. For each member to focus on their own data set, will I think tend to better extend expression in the final artefacts as well as the scope of data explored. It doesn’t burden us to do so, as data isn’t difficult to unpack and that the general context remains familiar to the team.
So with the data set retrieved from the last project, I’ve begun to generate ideas.
Tumblr media
I would be the first in the group to focus on suicide rates between the national youth and elderly population. The data was provided by the Ministry of Health and spanned a record from 2006-2015. However pronounced the results of early-life and late-life suicide may be, there is opportunity for a dignified design to express this.
The specifications for our artefacts are closely related to tangible data experiences. To raise awareness to the user on the suicide context, the design must tangibly communicate a degree of discomfort. The common theme across developing designs is spikes. The team has experimented with spools of iron wire, moulding clay and iron led. While this construction aspect is an option, others intend to 3D print their jewellery. I need to choose my direction soon.
Investigations off topic raised potential designs. At some point in my research I went a little deep into methods of data visualisation in a coding environment. This wouldn’t be realistic for me to implement, but I remembered the sorting mechanism for a series of collapsing lines;
Tumblr media
I considered the order and disorder of simple abstract shapes. With suicide rates of youth and elderly at extreme ends of a spectrum, such a visual could represent this contrast. What I’ve sketched out for a possible ring looks viable with the lines but I’m undecided on its physical properties. However, I think it’s a good start. What with my pulse sensor I wouldn’t need to put too much intricacy into this particular contribution.

Final Project Log- 5
Our story board has been relatively finalised, we cut out a lot of things from what we initially had.
Along the way of doing all this outside opinion helped us realise that our story has become not about denial but rather acceptance. The way the player is forced to be responsible for their in game actions derived from our initial concept and ended up affecting what mechanics were the most important.
Our theme change was probably important for us to realise because it allowed us to cut out several mechanics we realised we no longer needed or never needed in the first place. This post is short but I hope to have more content to blog about during this week.

Coming down to the wire II
In the interest of actually having our mini golf course usable we actually got onto putting it together yesterday. After user testing and sussing out what it is we wanted to put together, we put our heads down and got well underway with construction. The main focus of the last week or so was fabrication. While there isn’t much to reflect on here, it has been a good process and it has been really reassuring knowing that we are making progress. The checklist is getting ticked slowly but surely and I think that as long as we keep it up we are well on track to having it done in time for hand in.
Yesterday we screwed together the end of the course and today we plan to connect the rest of the long sides and staple the green on to have the part of the course that won’t be moveable done and dusted. My next step will be to get the parts that the audience will put in made, tidied up and bring them in, and to bring in the parts for the wall and put that up and construct it.

Coming up With an Idea & Making Connections
We spent a good amount of time coming up with ideas and pondering about what we should create for the project, but ultimately got not very far. Charles then approached us and suggested that we should make use of our t-wall’s space and paste our ideas onto the walls – everything we could come up with. We did so, and ended up with over fifty key words of ideas/aspects each of us individually would like to see included in the project. Following that, we grouped them all into four sub-categories:
Extinction – touching on what is going extinct on the world around us, i.e. animals and social interactions
Social – focusing on social issues
Senses – ideas about how the project could incorporate the viewer’s senses into it
Issues – different issues that happen in the world. We later removed this category, as it was far too broad, and not very focused (the other categories also had their own ‘issues’)
It then became apparent on one thing that we would all like to see in the project – Impact – we want to have an impact on the audience, whether it be through stimulating their senses, or making light of an underlying issue that affects them. Following that, we added connections with red twine (as seen below), to show how each of the ideas relate to each other and how they can work together to produce a project.
Finally, we each took a sticky note with our name on it and placed it on the connection that spoke to us the most, and we think we move forward with. I chose the connection that combines fear, extinction, nostalgia and senses. I think it would be a good idea to combine these four topics together and make a project focusing on them; however, the others have the same idea, but with their topics. We will have to compromise with each other and narrow in on what to focus on for our project.

Studio II: Final thoughts
This studio has been interesting for me, I started off by having a very arbitrary and unconventional approach to the research in the hopes that I would be able to combine the idea with someone who would be able to use the research or look into the idea with me further as we approach a way of explaining/showcasing/exploring through a more conventional method such as a game, or maybe a film or something.
But as expected nobody was really that interested so I didn’t get picked up by any group. Probably not just because of my ideas but due to my lack of a trade as well I was kind of that guy who’s always picked last for schoolyard football. So we basically just got tossed into a grouping of 5 different random people who had faced the same fate of being the rejects of all the groups. 5 quickly became 6 when Shades joined us and then we were essentially just asked to make an brief using all of our ideas that we had researched with the thought in mind that most peoples research topics would be cohesive and would work well together.
Ours was quite the opposite as we had things all over the place, so many different ideas conflicting with each other which made it quite hard for us to create something that would really hit all of our interests but we managed to truck on through it and made our first brief:
“Our proposal is to evaluate the effectiveness of screen-based interactive multimedia artwork as a method of communication of emotional content.
Through iterative processes we will build a multi-sensory interactive work to stimulate the senses to evoke emotional response within the participant(s).
The criteria of engagement, enjoyment, retention of experience and level of distraction will be evaluated using various qualitative means. ”
At this point I was excited for the conceptual opportunities that our piece could have, and being happy where we were I decided to take a trip to the US for a month and then just completely stitch up my team in terms of conceptual thinking and research. In coming back with not that much progress to be seen that demoralized me quite a large amount, and then on top of that my thoughts on staying in the BCT were pushed to brinks for a few weeks, things didn’t look good for the end result or the project itself.
All there really was to do to save the project was just to start to get our acts together and start doing stuff pretty much, and with alot of help and motivation from Shades and Vaani they managed to get the pace rolling on the project again and we just started to meet the deadlines we had set for ourselves and actually made alot of progress. So I would say that about literally 80% of the project was finished in the last 3 weeks which probably doesn’t look the best but hey, at least we managed to finish with a result that we are all pretty satisfied with.
So what have I learned?
This project has taught me a whole bunch of things and the first one is again like every single project I will ever do, is how important time management is.
I honestly say it every single time in my reflections on a project but I never seem to properly implement it into my next project. Its just a combined state of laziness and not really knowing how to progress further from the point that I’m at, that gives me the excuses for poor time management. I feel that if I had properly implemented a good schedule and regular blogging entries the constant reflection that I would undergo would be so beneficial for my project and just going home and commenting on what I did and how I could improve that would benefit me in my growth so much more.
I also think that this project has taught me alot more about is how I fit into a team environment when I’m not doing something that I necessarily enjoy. The way I see my personal role in this project was sort of a little bit of a leader, the guy who could keep a level head and the conceptual lead who designed most of the thinking behind this project. This is mostly just due to me knowing that I am not a master or have any knowledge of a trade such as Photoshop or coding. I think its just me also being a bit too shy and not taking enough risks to come out and start learning a new skill. comparable to what Kelvin in our group did. I think that what I can really take from this project is that I need to try to get out of my comfort zone a little bit more when it comes to group work and try to step up to be that guy who will learn a new skill, or maybe the way to go is to do a project with a small team, 2 people or maybe just myself just to force myself to leave the nest and start to essentially start exploring my full potential.
Finally what I feel I can draw from my experience is the fact that in long projects like this one, burnouts are something that will happen to everyone. I went through my fair share of them and I’m pretty sure that most other groups and people will have too. I’m not sure whether it was because this wasn’t the original  idea that held my interest but rather a mixture of other peoples ideas as well, or whether it was just the sheer length of the second half of the semester but either way I think for further reference in other long projects it is an important idea to keep in mind how to deal with it and how to a certain degree counteract the effects.
Overall looking on this project retrospectively I did enjoy working with my team, it was a good experience watching us all grow in our ideas and our skills with Kelvin especially gaining a large amount more coding experience. The team environment was stressful at times but hopefully me and Simon managed to do enough stupid shit to keep everyone happy and laughing to a certain degree.
Thanks Group R and I think we can be quite happy as of to how VaDs turned out.

Learning experience:
Second semester of my first year in Bachelor of Creative Technology at Auckland University of Technology was exceptionally productive under many criteria’s I happily worked towards. I felt the pressure of focusing too hard on what I wanted to achieve but at the end, it was worth it. It was worth it because the theme given to Studio || was well organised in a way every student could relate to in their own ways which was unique to watch. The reason being that is because this topic is so broad that everything and anything can be manipulated around it.
The goal for the paper CTEC503/Studio || paper was to ‘not to solve a problem, not to express yourself, more crucially, to engage with a problem to help you understand the world in new ways’. This shaped around our group very smoothly from the day we all came in together as one. The first time we all came in as one, the question of all of us being different arose and it still did until this date. The reason being this is because every time we all worked on something, the ideas were always different. Some sounded smart and some sounded just as dumb. But the dumbest ideas were the best idea to go with, helping the project stay in the place of simplistic and real.
Overall, I enjoyed this paper especially this semester to the best of my ability and learnt new things especially in the project we worked on because it was all something new to us individuals. There have been times I disconnected myself from the group because I needed time for myself to have a clear understanding of why we have chosen this path to go into under the theme given to us and why. I slowly came to realisation that the problem we are trying to understand in the real world does exists not just in New Zealand but around the country. I only just could relate to this problem when the students from BCT were given opportunities to go overseas and study which was for next year to U.S or Netherlands. I took the chance and applied but as the days passed by, the balance in my bank account decreased because of the amount that was being spent on the university life, I already started holding a massive ‘NO NO’ against the opportunity that was originally desired for students.
This all falls under the category of managing a simple life. A simple life itself is already difficult to manage when a student is living by themselves. I’m not living by myself nor spending big amount of my own living as I live with my parents but as my life got busy with uni, things started to fall apart and I slowly understood what was it really us as a student in this group are trying to understand after coming with a simple concept for the project based under the theme ‘movement and motion’.
The realisation of ‘creating an original product/service for students in order to assist their budget and food planning decisions’ shaped around the topics we covered before beginning with the project and these are: Embodiment: presence of bodies, traces, extension Social movement and change Entanglement Interrogations of movement Digital mapping for social change Watching things move
The only source of knowledge is experience and this was well experienced this semester. I feel like I have done exceptionally well this semester and have continuously improved on things my grades were taken out from to get a better grade. I have definitely exceeded from the grades I have been getting so far for my other papers which I am proud of but I still feel like I can do overly well next year which would eventually meet the second-year standard but I will have to work extra hard which I think I’m ready for.
P.S I need to choose my papers for next year but I will need to sit down and think what is it really that interests me. Because right now, I like to have a mix of everything and I enjoy it but that’s only if the real world was about ‘everything in one”. But this is why BCT exists. It has everything in one!!! But doesn’t every accomplishment starts with the decision to try?
Every part I have taken a part into and contributed back to this semester and for this paper, I enjoyed every aspect of it but I am looking forward to taking papers that would direct me to the modern technological but playful side. So far, I am still tossing between Synthetic Realities, Interactive Technology and Systems and New Media Applications. I would probably include Entrepreneurship and Innovation but I feel like it would be a waste especially in this modern world because everything is purely about business and everything we do, it becomes a part of business that we feel the need to teach ourselves how to sell ideas which in this case, we do anyway just by coming up with a simple concept, developing and implementing the interfaces prototype and sell the ideas while it is still under construction. It is very common with everything that is being built in today’s world and not to mention about NASA selling the idea of a starship ‘being under construction’ while selling the idea to a man for grands which still hasn’t existed over five years of time (Warburton, 2014). Isn’t this incredible? Yet disappointing?
The idea was sold through the use of animations of starship being created through a software that was originally developed for games but was overly used for modelling ideas into a visual representation.  I think the release of new technologies and media grows a lot of fools in today’s world but it’s all about who plays with the ideas safely and correctly. This can also be very costly and this is why we need to teach ourselves ‘business’ through innovations or we will all fall under a huge loss.
