Walking In A Winter Wonderland

"Keep up, CeCe! Haze isn't waiting around today." Patrick shouted over the wind, with a sly smile. His statement is met from an eyeroll from his girlfriend, Cecily. She always hated being called CeCe. Or at least, she acted like it. Truthfully, she got butterflies when it was Patrick saying it.

Cecily gave Bertie a little squeeze with her calves; the Morgan x draft cross didn't have quite the leggy build of Patrick's giant warmblood mare. "Alternatively, you could try to keep your mare from running away with you." As if on cue, Haze let out a loud snort and tossed her head. The mare's favorite speed was a gallop, so she was protesting the idea of a calm, winter hack. The duo kept up their playful bickering throughout their ride.

The holiday season lends itself to reflection on those important to you. Cecily and Patrick fatefully met at a Pony Club camp as kids. Their relationship weathered the years, until they realized there was no one else they'd rather spend their lives with. A smile from Cecily reminded Patrick of that future that would be starting soon. Today may not be the day, the snow was heavier than Patrick was hoping for, but Patrick knew the ring in his pocket wouldn't stay a secret for long. For now, he would enjoy how a snow day with your best friend, is a wonderland.

I have so many nice messages and asks--thank you for that! they've been such bright moments to see those pop up and I'm going to finally get back to today as a treat because, y'all, the last couple of days have been a lot fighting to get my brother-in-law proper care. I just need to have a rant post. (cw: mental health, American healthcare bullshit, threats of harm/SI)

We spent the last few days trying to get several hospitals to take us seriously to take care of my BiL. He's presenting as psychotic and two hospitals dismissed it as mental health and sent him away. He has NEVER behaved this way. One hospital kept him because he was threatening to harm himself and others. They held him for 12 hours and then discharged him because the doctor said he'd been calm since her shift started: from 3am to 6am. I'm also pretty calm at 3am. wtf. This is a man who used to work hazmat for the us military, combat vet, he works at ROTC, he took on parenting his best friend's children when needed. He's goofy but he's competent. They discharged him despite him not being able to identify numbers or colors. when asked what season it was he said, "Monday." He was babbling nonsense, banging on things with nothing behind his eyes, and couldn't keep his tongue in his mouth. He wasn't the man I know. He was like a toddler. And he was dangerous. Tricking him into getting into the car and driving with him in the car 45min to get him across the border to another state with a better hospital system was terrifying. If he had an episode, we could have crashed. I had pepper spray in my pocket the whole ride. Here's the thing. He had spinal surgery 11 days ago during which there was a spinal fluid leak that the surgeons couldn't find to close. He went back to the hospital with headaches 3 times and they kept sending him home saying it would resolve on its own.

But when he presented to hospitals like this, no one would listen to us begging them to CT his brain, check intracranial pressure, or check for infection. We were brushed off.

Once we got to a neighboring state, between me not backing down and my husband throwing his mental health care license around in a way that made him super uncomfortable, they finally looked for a medical cause. (Mental health IS medical but the ERs don't treat it that way.) He's now being treated for what they believe is an infection that spread to his brain. But we spent 12 hours yesterday trying to keep calm even when he didn't know who we were and then listening to him scream and fight when we couldn't. My husband was a hero. There's so much more but I'm tired. We're exhausted, physically and emotionally. We're still worried sick, waiting to hear if the antibiotics are helping. I'm furious with the medical system. I just hope he will be okay and recover to someone I've known for 20 years.

So thanks for listening to me rant and for all the lovely unrelated messages. I'm so excited to answer things and get my mind off of this for a little while.

Catatan : Tahun ke 27

Bagi sebagian (besar) orang-orang, tahun 2020 berlalu begitu cepat hingga berasa hanya berjalan selama 4 bulan. Januari, Februari, pandemi, dan desember. Entah kapan pula bulan pandemi muncul di kalender dengan tanggal merah sederetan panjang yang dilabelin “work from home” aktivitas liburan tapi kerja, kerja tapi liburan. Kecuai bagi beberapa profesi termasuk kita. Tetap dong gantian 3 shift ke RS. yakali wfh, pasien di bangsal pasang infus sendiri, nyuntik sendiri trus kita monitoring dari rumah?

Bagaymanapun, 2020 tetap istimewa, penuh dengan hal-hal baru, pengalaman dan pelajaran baru dan indah. Meski ngga semua yang terjadi dirasakan indah diawalnya, tapi setelah dipikir lagi, direnungkan lagi, baru berasa. Mari kita throwback sejenak, karena kemarin juga ngga sempat bikin kaleidoskop 2020.

Awal tahun kita dikejutkan dengan kabar bahwa setelah berkali kali berulah, bikin masalah, kena marah, ketawa, berulah lagi, kena marah lagi, gitu terus, akhirnya Abul ujian TA. Sayangnya waktu itu ogut lagi sakit, muntah-muntah parah dan Mami jejen ngga tega ninggalin anak gadisnya yang lagi sakit sendirian di rumah. Lalu jadilah Abul pertunjukkan tugas akhir tanpa dihadiri keluarga. Sedih sih, tapi lebih bangganya lihat video dan potongan instastory mantemannya Abul. Keren banget adek akuh. Apalagi waktu Abul pake setelan jas, rambut gondrongnyanya dikucir rapi, main Haydn-Concerto in c major. Aku baru percaya kata-katanya manteman aku yang bilang “Fad, adek lu cakep yah.”

yang ini jas sama kuncirannya udah dibuka yak, kalo ngga salah yang ini bawain “Tudung Pandan”.

Kita baru bisa ke Padang panjang buat wisudanya Abul. Meski was-was juga sama pandemi karena covid19 udah nyampe ke Indonesia. Tapi Alhamdulillah wisudanya tetap berjalan lancar dengan protokol kesehatan tentunya. Overall, suka syekali dengan istiadat wisudanya kampus Abul. Rapi, syahdu, dan berasa alek gadang nya.

Pencapaian berikutnya, SK PNS dongs ceu

Salahsatu widyaiswara latsar lalu pernah minta kita nulis alasan kenapa ingin jadi PNS. Ada yang ingin membahagiakan orang tua atau keluarga, jaminan hari tua, akualisasi diri, dan meluluhkan hati mertua. Nah kalau kamu masih ingat dan penasaran siapa yang sopan sekali punya motivasi yang terakhir itu, aku orangnya. wkwkkwwk... Pengalaman ketika tidak menjadi pilihan bukibu yang khawatir banget merelakan anak bujangnya ke perempuan lain yang ngga ada apa-apa nya ini, kek hidup ogut ngga meyakinkan banget dah,  jadi pecutan dong buat punya sesuatu yang menyatakan “Tenang, anak ibu aman bersama saya”. Apasih ini??? LOL

Sekian waktu berlalu, kesaktian SK ini belum keliatan juga sodara-sodara. Ternyata ngga secanggih dan semudah yang diceritain rangorang kok. Masih jomblo jugak

Jangan lupa 2020 adalah tahun politik sodara-sodara. Walaupun I don’t know and I don’t care about that, tapi ada suatu hal yang bikin kita flashback ke awal tahun 2019 lalu kala nama ct muncul di grup medsos yang dikomentar secara membabi buta. Meski udah siapin screenshoot postingan, komentar dan DM dese ya mana tau sewaktu-waktu bisa diduitin dilaporkan, tapi berakhir antiklimaks juga sodara-sodara. Bedanya, yang ini pelakunya lebih punya keberanian buat datang dan minta maaf dibandingkan abang-abang yang onoh.

Punya adek-adek yang cakep dan belum juga punya kepastian ini kapan sih ngga jomblo lagi, menyadarkan ct kalau nantinya besar kemungkinan ogut akan jadi Bridesmaid untuk sodara sendiri. Tahun lalu Uput udah nikah, qadarullah ct ngga sempat datang tapi. dan tahun ini Uyup yang nikah. Senang rasanya lihat adek-adek gw udah punya komitmen untuk bertanggung jawab bukan hanya untuk diri sendiri. 

Target #pakgawibermenantu2020 kita gagal total, juga manteman aku pernah nanya : 

“Fad, adek lu kan cakep-cakep nih, udah wisuda pula, pemikirannya asik pula. Gimana kalau misalnya lu dilangkahin adek lu?”

Berat ya. Tapi aku diajarkan dengan baik sama Pak Gawi kalau rezeki, jodoh, dan maut merupakan kehendak Yang Maha Kuasa, bukan kehendak mahluk yang apa-apa galau kek aku. Jadi jika adek-adek udah punya pemikiran dan persiapan yang mumpuni buat, “baiklah aku duluan” ya silahkan. Tapi jika kamu ngga tega lihat aku ngga punya pasangan dinikahannya adek aku. Sini woy, jangan diam aja, ngasih harapan, tapi ngga berani ngomong, iyaaaa sini.

Sama seperti harus sabarnya kita ketika seseorang yang kita sayangi berpulang.

Malam itu aku udah nungguin di IGD karena Mak ngabarin kondisi Cik menurun. Aku ngga tau yang dimaksud menurun ini gimana, ngga ada keterangan yang cukup jelas. Saat ambulannya datang, Najhan turun dengan mata yang basah, langsung lari dan meluk aku “ Kak, bundaaaaa”

Cik datang dengan GCS 3. Bapak yang juga lagi sakit nyusul dari Mersam datang ke RS juga buat lihat keadaan adiknya. IGD tetiba rasanya jadi asing ketika yang terbaring di bed resusitasi adalah orang yang kamu sayang. Kondisi cik sempat membaik setelah dapat bantuan oksigen dan therapi bahkan cukup stabil sampai bisa kita lakukan pemeriksaan radiologi. Kesadarannya juga CM sampai bisa diajak bicara, Cik bilang “Kak, litak nian, Kak....” Sedih bgt rasanya, tapi ngga boleh nangis dan harus kelihatan tegar karena disamping, ada Bapak yang selalu nanyain angka-angka di monitor. Setelah berjuang sekitar 5 jam, Cik berpulang. Malam itu kita berbagi tugas, nemenin almarhumah pulang ke Mersam, gimana pelan-pelang ngasih kabar ke Gde, dampingin najhan, dan jemput Fikri di pesantren. Semua serba tiba-tiba, dan kami sungguh belum siap. Tapi kita ngga punya pilihan lain selain berserah diri kepada Allah.  Innalillahi wainna ilaihirajiun...

1 Desember 2020, ultah Kabupaten Batanghari.

Setelah sekian purnama akhirnya nugas di rapat paripurna lagi. Bukan yang pake selempang jejer di depan tapi, ya. udah ngga pantes. Kita “protokoler”nya saja. Di tugas kali ini juga jumpa lagi sama Gadis Anita yang sekarang menjabat sebagai Ketua DPRD Kab. Batanghari. Pertamakali setelah terakhir ketemu kira-kira tahun 2013 deh kayanya. Padahal pernah ada di event yang sama, juga rumah kita sebenarnya deketan. Tapi belum bisa ketemu atau ngobrol langsung. Jadi kuning pernah cerita, kalau belio selama ini ngga tahu kalau Fadlah ini anaknya Wak Gawi. Baru tau setelah manteman kuning nanyain “Kakak”. “Lha kak Fadlah kaka nya Nia? anaknya Wak Gawi?” Hehehehe.. Gpp dek. Dulu waktu di Muaro Sebo Ulu, kak fad malah dikira pembokatnya Pak Gawi. Kurang mirip kali yak?

Begitulah, Dulu pernah sama-sama tugas penyambutan, sekarang beliaunya disambut, ya kita masih gini-gini aja :D

Sudah hampir akhir tahun tapi pandemi belum usai. Akhir november salah satu teman kita ngelapor ada gejala anosmia, kemudian di swab PCR dan hasilinya positif. Maka untu screening kita satu tim isolasi mandiri dan juga diswab. Buat yang sepanjang pandemi ini belum pernah dilakukan uji swab dan nanya gimana rasanya? Bersyukurlah kalian. Di swab itu rasanya kaya lagi korek telinga biasa, tapi cottonbud nya agak gedean dan dikoreknya itu di tenggorokan dan hidung. Ngga sakit sih, cuma geli dan sungguh ngga nyaman. Salut dah buat yang harus berpergian selama pandemi ini dan pasrah aja diswab berkali-kali. Alhamdulillah hasil swab ct negatif, hingga besoknya bisa ikut pemilihan kepala daerah. Padahal udah membayangkan akan didatangi abang-abang pake hazmat logo KPU ke rumah.

Tahun berganti dan akhirnya udah Januari lagi. Baiklah ini memang ngga usia remaja lagi gaes. Udah dewasa tua ini mah. Jadi udah haram hukumnya main-main, ingat itu, fad. 

Etapi gimana ya. Waktu kita berusaha bantuin dan melakukan yang terbaik dibilanganya “Kamu terlalu baik buat aku”. Tapi ketika kita jadi independent women bilangnya “Den ukua badan jo bayang-bayang...” Maka sekarang mau belajar jadi ciwi-ciwi lucu ajalah biar ngga dikira elegant banget, tapi takutnya ntah dikira ngelawak? ngga serius? jadi gimana dong mau serius apa main-main?

Intinya ngga berharap banyak sih, karena emang di umur segini ngga cukup cuma berharap. Ntar udah berharap sama yang ngasih harapan tau-taunya cuma harapan palsu. Kan sakit yah. Jadi akutuh cuma berharap kesehatan dan kebahagiaan buat Pak Gawi dan Mami Jejen. Semoga mereka sehat selalu, diberikan umur yang panjang, rizki yang melimpah, anak-anaknya tumbuh menjadi anak yang baik, berguna bagi nusa, bangsa dan agama. 

Semoga harapan Pak gawi dan Mami Jejen buat menghabiskan masa Pensiun di Rumah Mersam dengan nyaman terwujud. Pak Gawi udah nanam sawo sama jambu di samping rumah, katanya buat cucunya besok kalau liburan panen buah-buahan. Semoga harapannya terwujud ya pak. Ct cari menantunya bapak dulu.

Ah udah ah ngelantur.

Selamat menua diri sendiri. Dunia ini jahat, tapi kamu harus tetap baik. Jika sepanjang catatan ini aku terlihat hopeless, ngga koq. Aku baik-baik saja. Tapi akan lebih baik jika bersama kamu. ,

So why was a farmer hauling behind his tractor two tanks filled with this extremely toxic chemical? Why was he allowed to haul this chemical through residential areas? What is this toxic chemical used for? Why does Illinois continue to fuck up everything? The chemical is anhydrous ammonia. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said anhydrous ammonia is a colorless gas that can cause breathing difficulties, burns, blisters and is fatal if breathed in high concentrations.

Excerpt from this Chicago Tribune story:

Ammonia spilling from a valve hooked to two tanks being pulled by a farm tractor in Beach Park early Thursday released gas that sent at least 37 people to hospitals, including seven who were reported to be in critical condition.

Witnesses and victims of the gas spill described being blinded or quickly overwhelmed by the toxic plume.

Investigators think a tractor was towing a pair of two-ton tanks containing anhydrous ammonia when they began to leak. Covelli said investigators do not believe the vehicle was involved in a traffic collision.

“Basically, it caused the substance to go airborne,” Covelli said, “which released the plume into the air, which is extremely dangerous.”

That substance can cause “unconsciousness, and at worst case even death,” Covelli said.

According to Covelli, among those injured were emergency personnel responding to the scene.

Here come the excuses and the uses of this chemical:

Mike Galllo, a division chief with the Lake Forest Fire Department, said it appears a valve hooked up to the two containers being pulled by the tractor failed. Gallo said farmers often use the chemical to help aerate soil, and as of 9 a.m. both of the tanks had been emptied of the ammonia.

A toxic chemical used to aerate farm soil? WTF?

Farmers towing nurse tanks with anhydrous ammonia — like other farmers taking equipment from field to field — just need a regular driver’s license, Secretary of State spokesman Dave Druker said.

Other regulations administered by the Illinois Department of Agriculture address the transportation of the chemical itself. Those regulations cover the required thickness of the tanks, how they should be towed and what equipment is mandated to prevent spills, according to the department’s administrative rules.

Additional requirements, such as requiring a “Slow Moving Vehicle” placard and not going over 25 mph, are covered by the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois Department of Agriculture spokeswoman Morgan Booth said.

[U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider] said he will also request the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency look into the incident to see if any needed updates to the Clean Air Act and Toxic Substances Control Act are appropriate. He said he would also ask the NTSB and Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration to review the laws and regulations concerning the transportation of hazardous chemicals.

Well I have a new 223 bolt gun coming my way and I expect to be testing some new 22cal bullets made from 22lr brass. Gun is a Savage 12BVSS 223rem and was wondering what loads you guys have had best luck with these bullets? Gun has a 26' barrel! with 1-9 twist. I expect to start with bullets in the 55-65 grain range. Anyone actually experienced decrease in accuracy when we push these bullets too fast? We have all heard about this so called 3200FPS limit with bullets made from the 22LR brass I'm but looking for some actual first hand load data. Think I have read good things about Varget?? maybe like 25 grains or so? Anyone else have any first hand info? I have the 'one book' reloading manual for the 223 rem so I can look up loads all day long but I'm looking for any recamendations, primer choice too if you care to share. Thanks BT

Disappearance of South Windsor mom being considered 'suspicious' SOUTH WINDSOR, CT (WFSB) – Police are now considering the disappearance of a South Windsor mother to be ‘suspicious.’ On Friday night, state police were searching a condominium in South Windsor in connection to the search for Jessica Edwards. Edwards disappeared several days ago. South Windsor Police say the search isn’t the result of any specific information, just information they collected throughout the week. People wearing hazmat suits were seen going into the condo, as well at K9 units.  On Friday, family and friends of a missing mother from South Windsor organized a search team Friday morning to try and track her down. Edwards is 30 years old and is described as 5’3″ tall and weighs around 150 pounds. She is a new mom and recently was married. Her family said she disappeared early Monday morning. She’s a student at Manchester Community College and apparently emailed a professor early Monday morning to say she wouldn’t be in class; however, police said Edwards left her vehicle at home and turned off her cell phone. Investigators said they don’t have any evidence of foul play, but they haven’t ruled it out. K9 and aerial support teams are being used, police said. “It’s extremely concerning and we haven’t closed our doors to any possibility at this point,” said South Windsor Police Sgt. Mark Cleverdon. Her family, friends, and police said they just want to make sure she’s safe. Family members were adamant that Jessica would not disappear without taking her baby with her.
