Unul dintre cei mai valorioși handbaliști suceveni crescuți la Liceul cu Program Sportiv de-a lungul anilor a fost Gheorghe Irimescu. După o carieră deosebită, care s-a întins pe o durată de peste două decenii pe prima scenă a handbalului românesc, Ghiță Irimescu și-a anunțat retragerea din activitatea competițională. Anunțul pivotului în vârstă de 40 de ani care a îmbrăcat în ultimele două sezoane tricoul Politehnicii Timișoara a venit pe pagina personală de facebook:

„După 21 de ani a venit timpul să spun stop carierei de jucător! Mulțumesc, handbal! Ținem aproape!” Format la Liceul cu Program Sportiv Suceava, Ghiță Irimescu are un trecut plin de realizări, el câştigând de două ori titlul de campion al României, cu HCM Constanța, Cupa României de trei ori, o dată cu UCM Reşița şi de două ori cu HCM Constanța, şi Cupa Challenge de trei ori, cu UCM Reşița, ultimul trofeu fiind cucerit în detrimentul Universității Suceava. De asemenea, a făcut parte din lotul național al României, care a participat la Campionatul Mondial din 2009, din Croația. Ghiță Irimescu a debutat în Liga Națională la Poli Timişoara şi a mai evoluat în lunga sa carieră pentru Minaur Baia Mare, UCM Reşița, HCM Constanța, CS Caraş Severin, HC Odorhei și Steaua București.
