Many of us have, at the very core of our being, the sneaking suspicion that we are not capable of, well, anything worthwhile. Doing things to disprove this notion is a great way to start to feel better about ourselves. When you are feeling poorly about yourself, reach out, not with the intent to make yourself feel better, but with the intent to see how you can be of service to another.

Offer someone your seat on the bus. Hold the door open on the elevator. Let that car in front of you in traffic. Let someone ahead of you in line.

Take it to the next level: Look around and see what needs doing. Do it. Cheerfully.

Or even better: Have lunch with someone you don’t know and find out more about them. Ask someone who looks down on how they are doing and really listen to them, without offering judgment or advice. Cook some meals for an elderly friend or a new mom, freeze them and bring them over. Give someone a ride. Help someone who has been ill catch up on their chores. Take care of your neighbor’s pets while they are out of town.

People so frequently get discouraged and think that they cannot make a difference. They would be mistaken. Tell people you care about them and appreciate them. Do your best to act only from a space of love. Use love as your measuring stick for your actions.
