Silhouettes caress without feeling
Who'll be your mercenary
Let the trespassers stay
Decorate starving strays
You can not convert me
Reparations unseen
Silhouettes caress without feeling
Who'll be your mercenary
They dress them up in lace
Underage have their way
Join them in solitary
Should be voluntary

Crystal Castles (2008) Crystal Castles (II) (2010) (III) (2012) Crystal Castles
Crystal Castles dominated music journalism discourse for years (just look how long their Wikipedia page is!) and that isn’t so perplexing. The duo’s blasts of noisy, gothy, punky synthpop ideally combo’d innovation and accessibility, while their approach clearly developed throughout these three records – which are the only ones with Alice Glass, so the only ones worth your time. The debut was a little repetitive, though certainly thrilling in parts; the next was both poppier and less so, producing a car-advert-appropriate pop stomper or two and a few heedless screamo things; while the third was the most cohesive. All are compelling enough but now a little dated, a sort of gloomy, more imprecise and less mobile precursor to the bolder experiments of the PC Music gang a few years later.
Pick(s): ‘Crimewave’, ‘Celestica’, ‘Sad Eyes’
