Episode 197: The Mechanical Sounds in the Forest Phenomenon feat. Cryptonaut Podcast
Welcome to Episode 197: The Mechanical Sounds in the Forest Phenomenon feat. Cryptonaut Podcast. Sometimes the scariest things in life are actually the most mundane, such as an everyday object (or even a sound) appearing in a location where it shouldn't. What would you do if while camping in the wilderness - miles away from civilization - you suddenly awoke in the middle of the night to the deafening roar of man-made mechanical noises all around you? You Let's Get Haunted with special guests Marc and Rob of Cryptonaut Podcast as we read and listen to firsthand accounts of hikers and campers who have met with this bizarre phenomenon that only seems to be growing more common in recent years. What could these noises be the product of? Bugs and birds? Ghosts and Fairies? Cryptids and Aliens? Or something else?
Be sure to head over to Cryptonaut Podcast and give them a listen!

In light of the newest series, I have to wonder if the Last Podcast guys will experience the same kind of localized High Strangeness (missing documents, loss of time, creeping dread and paranoia, etc) that the Cryptonaut guys did when they covered the Mothman in-depth.

I need to finish Mortimer’s page because I haven’t added to his old bio the stuff about how he was turned into a vampire.
For those of you who have been following me for years, I will now only be writing Mortimer as a vampire. I might potentially do stuff set before he was turned, but now his main standard verse he is a vampire. I’m also not going to really set a time frame for his main verse, but anywhere between 1860s and present day will work. I’m super flexible with other people’s verses and AUs, so literally just tell me what setting you want and I can find a way to put him in there.
With that being said, however....
Here are some things about Mortimer’s particular flavour of vampirism (CW for body horror/gore):
The only thing that happens to him in sunlight is that he gets weak and sick. He got pretty use to feeling miserable before being turned, so you will readily see him out during daylight hour, though he does do his best to protect himself from direct sunlight.
Heat, especially when mixed with high humidity, also makes him ill. Though he cannot actually rot away, his body will start to undergo some of the signs of decomposition -- he will begin to cough up dark-coloured, foul smelling purge which if left to progress will also start running from his nose and eyes, his skin will start to turn grey then green, and in the most severe cases he will experience some skin slippage. He will experience a little bloat in the beginning, but he much more quickly emaciates.
When underfed or sick from heat, his hair will get greyer and and sparser, and he will overall appear to advance in physical age. This happens much more quickly in the latter than the former.
With that all being said, if you put him somewhere dark and cold and get him something to eat, he’ll be good as new.
Mortimer really does not like to hunt and will try to go as long as possible without feeding. He can eat “people food”, but besides the pleasure of taste it really doesn’t do anything for him. Eating rare to raw red and organ meat can help him stretch out feedings a little longer, but not by much.
He cannot turn himself into an animal, but he can turn himself into 2D shadow. (He casts no actual shadow of his own.) This often occurs when he is particularly anxious and put out of sorts. Initially he was unable to control this ability -- one second he would be anxiously standing there and then poof just blinks out of existence. Is that the “Hat Man” or other shadow person in the corner? No, it’s just Mort. However, he has learned to be able to control this ability and use it at will.
He does not like traveling over running water. He will try to avoid it if he can, but if he is forced to, it makes him horrendously uncomfortable, like the type of crushing anxiety that makes you feel like someone is literally tying your stomach into knots and there is an entire anvil on your body. Again, he is pretty good at keeping a straight face when uncomfortable or upset, but he can only keep this up for short spurts like traveling over small bridges.

The darlings @melit0n, @huntingteeth and @tonguetyd tagged me for six albums I've been listening to lately.
The brain hasn't been in a place where I can listen to much music; we've been doing podcasts instead. So you guys are gonna get my six pods on rotation, AS WELL as six albums!
Podcasts:
Behind the Bastards: just finished up the three part series on Steve Jobs.
Astonishing Legends: I re-listen to their Mothman series at least once a year. Most recently I did The Lost City of Akakor with Kinga Phillips. (I'm convinced Tatunca Nara was just a serial killer, if anyone wishes to discuss.)
The Cryptonaut Podcast: I'm part of their Patron and was a member of their Discord until I deleted my account. Currently going back through old Patreon episodes, but do love their series on the Varginha Incident, and again their deep dive into the Mothman (and the slow erosion of Rob's sanity as that series went on.)
Citation Needed: Action Park episode is the best thing. Today's episode was on the Dutch East India Company.
It Could Happen Here: podcast about things falling apart. I normally just listen to the compilation episodes on the weekends while I'm driving to and from work.
Pure Dog Talk with Laura Reeves: what it says on the tin. Purebred dog fancy, training, showing, health, etc. Sometimes they do dives on specific breeds. One of my favorites was on the Norbottenspets, because I've taken several classes from the breeder they had on and she's very sweet.
Albums:
Mellodeath Tapes Vol 1 from Sudden Death and Marshmello
Ceremonials - Florence + the Machine
Vol 1 - The Plot in You
Mercy - Cole Chaney
Finding God Before God Finds Me - Bad Omens
Tū - Alien Weaponry
It's hard to pick the albums, because I normally just throw on a playlist of the artist and shuffle everything 😅
Also that music is all over the place.
I'm not sure who all has been tagged and who hasn't, so feel free to consider yourself tagged if you'd like!

Danger Zone
Continuing from previous work mythical animals, this one shares motifs with many myths around the world. My inspiration comes from the Finnish mythology , where the River of Tuoni is a black river that the dead must cross after their passing. It is sometimes a burning rapid with sharp blades of swords, battle axes and sewing needles in it. Sometimes it is a calm stream where a swan can be seen swimming in. In the story of Lemminkäinen in the Kalevala, as his final task in pursuit to marry the maiden of the north, he was asked by his to be mother-in-law to kill the bird. As he comes to the river and is about to shoot the swan with his bow, he is ambushed by a vengeful cattle herder who Lemminkäinen previously insulted. The herder raises a viper from the water and sends it off like a magical spear piercing through several organs of Lemminkäinen. The herder then tosses him into the river and chops the body to pieces. I am curious the symbolism of the swan in this story. What it is the meaning of this bird that lives in such a dark and treacherous place. Around these parts swan was thought to be a sacred animal related to humans and whoever would kill one would be doomed. Obviously, that was plan of the mistress of the North when she gave the task. Across the world the swan has many meanings, it is considered to be a symbol of things like purity and light, beauty and grace, eternal love, fidelity, wisdom, and transformation. Like in this story it is connected to the otherworld, due to it is capability to travel through different elements. Regarding love, the swan are known to mate for life and are also fierce protectors of their young. Self-love also comes up - as it is a sole swan, it does kind of resonate. Lemminkäinen had a wife from before, but after she broke her promise of not “going out to town”, in anger he broke his vow of not going to war and set out to pillage and plunder and seek out a new wife from the perilous north- against the advice of his mother. While working on this piece many synchronicities happen and I’m reminded of the movie Top Gun where the hotheaded main character Maverick is playing to that archetype. Reckless hero like Lemminkäinen, he also has a taste for women, is skilled in warfare and always trying to prove himself. The big twist in the film is when his friend and co-pilot Goose dies, not directly because of him. but his recklessness caught in his rival, the otherwise composed character Iceman. If you follow my musings, the birds, goose and swan are somewhat similar in behavior, and they do share a lot of symbolism. Maverick carries the blame of Goose’s death on himself despite being officially cleared and almost gives up his career as a pilot. He has lost his self, trying to sneak while her love affair also happens to be moving on to new and better things with her career. He will eventually find himself after talking with his commanding officer Viper, who tells him about his father and his heroism when they flew together. Maverick returns to do what he does best and saves the day, gets the girl back, for the moment at least, and in the end chooses to become an instructor in Top Gun. Lemminkäinen’s mother will come and rake the pieces of his son from the river and resurrect him. He will find trouble again, as will Maverick. My previous works with animals have had some symbolism related to crypto. It was not in my mind initially with this one, but the swan through its qualities is also connected to the moon, the desired destination of cryptonauts in hopes of their particular investment shooting upwards. Putting everything on the line for that to happen is why many to crash and burn. I’ve had my taste too, hoping to have learned something over the years. There is a reason for the myths to exist and talk to us through the ages inspiring art.

Roundup
Blah Blah:
Day "off" and what do I decide to do? Move a big ass couch up six flights of stairs by myself obviously. Christ, that was fucking brutal.
On deck for the rest of today? Pizza, beer, working on the next Celestial Furnace track and maybe playing some more Elden Ring?
I need to do laundry too, but I think that's probably a job for either tomorrow or Wednesday.
-
Muzak:
Heldon - Sci-fi obsessed electronic/ psychedelic legends. Heldon has always kinda reminded me of the first couple Tangerine Dream albums crossed with Robert Fripp's solo "Frippertronic" looping/ ambient stuff.
-
Richard Pinhas/ Masami Akita/Tatsuya Yoshida - Japan's "King of Noise", the drummer of prog-core titans Ruins, and the mastermind behind French electronic legends Heldon conjuring some truly beautiful damage.
Seriously, give this one a spin of you dig ENDON's weirdly melodic noisecore destruction, cos this gets way more into that territory than I was expecting.
Definitely gonna grab a physical copy of this.
-
Paranoid - A friend of mine kept telling me to check out Paranoid and I just finally got around to it like three years later (I dunno what took so long, I guess COVID Happened and It just kind of slipped my mind)... Turns out they are indeed pretty fucking killer, a total maelstrom of ripshit fast Scandinavian metalpunk.
First thing this made me think of was Anti-Cimex "Scandinavian Jawbreaker" so if you dig that you'll probably dig this too.
Great cover art too, reminds me of Exumer's "Posessed by Fire."
-
Vital Remains - Pretty much Deicide but way faster and more melodic... So, like Deicide + "Blasphemy Made Flesh" era Cryptopsy maybe? Something like that anyway. I think by the time this album came out they actually had Glen Benton on Vocals too. Solos on this album rule so fucking hard.
youtube
-
German Oak - Zoned out german kraut/ psych circa 1972. Was reminded of this album by an article I read a while back and wound up tracking down a copy. Darker and less optimistic in tone than a lot of similar bands.
-
Brast Burn - 70's Japanese cult/ commune weirdos making cult/ commune weirdo muzak. Sounds melted as fuck.
youtube
-
Video Games:
Elden Ring - I lost 90+ hours of gameplay when my PS4 died but I'm finally back in and getting caught back up... Found a gigantic spiked-club/ hammer thing that I've been using to absolutely fucking bulldoze bosses.
-
Reading:
To paraphrase Jessie Ventura in Predator: "I ain't got time to read."
-
Podcasts/ Tube:
Monsters Among Us Podcast
Cryptonaut Podcast
Heavy Hole Podcast
Texas Chainsaw Massacre II
Halloween II (Rob Zombie) - Unpopular opinion, I like Rob Zombie's Halloween flicks, and just kind of his movies in general. They're big dumb edgelord slaughterfests that don't beat you over the head with a moral or try too hard to be clever.
I dunno, sometimes you want legit cinema and sometimes you just wanna to dig through the ditches and burn through the witches and slam in the back of your Dragula.
