Hong Kong Crypto ETFs Reach New Highs as Bitcoin Surpasses $52,000

Hong Kong's three crypto futures exchange-traded funds (ETFs) reached new price highs as bitcoin climbed above $52,000 on Thursday. The CSOP Bitcoin Futures ETF, Samsung Bitcoin Futures Active ETF, and CSOP Ether Futures ETF all hit all-time highs. The CSOP Bitcoin Futures ETF closed up 3.56% at HK$20.92 ($2.67), marking its all-time high since launching in December 2022. The Samsung Bitcoin Futures Active ETF rose by 3.67% to HK$20.32, and the CSOP Ether Futures ETF closed up 4.56% at HK$15.81, both also hitting all-time highs.

Several Hong Kong companies have announced plans to file spot crypto ETF applications this year after regional regulators expressed their readiness to accept such applications. Financial services firm Venture Smart Financial Holdings plans to debut its spot bitcoin ETF in Q1 and a spot ether ETF in the second quarter. The Hong Kong arm of major Chinese asset manager Harvest Fund reportedly submitted an application for a spot bitcoin ETF in January. Livio Weng, CEO of HashKey Exchange, stated that around ten fund companies, including those with Chinese capital backing, are exploring potential spot crypto ETF launches in the city.

This news comes as the price of bitcoin reached around $52,800 on Thursday. In addition to the ETFs, some blockchain- and crypto-related stocks in Hong Kong also experienced gains. Sinohope Technology Holdings saw its stock surge by 26%, while the stock of crypto trading platform OSL closed 12.6% higher. Hong Kong's regulators accepting spot crypto ETF applications signifies a growing interest in the crypto industry in the region.
