Back with some more traditional art 🤤🤤
The first one is me drawing similarities between Baldwin Blandish (Cry-baby) and Erich Collin (Harmony the musical) and the second one is a Mary (merrily we roll along) doodle 🤑

Movie Review | Cry-Baby (Waters, 1990)
Tumblr media
Embarrassingly, this is my first John Waters movie, and considering my allergy to mugging, which this movie contains a non-zero amount of, there was a chance I would hate this. In fact, I tried years ago to watch Desperate Living and bailed about halfway through because I couldn't take the constant yelling. And the fact is that camp musicals are not exactly my thing, as I've never made it more than five minutes into Grease despite having no aversion to song and dance in movies in general.
So it was a pleasant surprise that I gelled pretty well to this. I found the movie fun and funny, and found it nailed the bubblegum tone and mix of camp and sincerity it aimed for, that the stunt casting worked and felt like a cohesive part of the movie's vision, and that Johnny Depp's performance embodied all these sides of the movie with a certain electricity. All of which I think is harder to pull off than it looks. I think in the wrong hands I could see this either treating its characters too much like a joke, or being too cloying in its sincerity. I will say that I found the way the musical numbers were shot to be uninspired, but I imagine they play well with a properly enthused crowd.
Given how late I'm coming to this movie and Waters' work, I'm not gonna bring any insights to this, but I was struck by the total absence of wrongdoing on the part of the bad boys and bad girls in this movie. The characters wear leather jackets and ride motorcycles and maybe go a little too fast and scowl a little too much, but they're basically friendly and likeable and from what we can see, mostly law abiding. There's no transgression here, the vision is entirely wholesome.
