21. The Muleteer: 

To my misfortune, the donkey of which I was riding stopped suddenly and balked. I whipped him. He bucked twice, then three times more, than (sic) once more, this last time throwing me from the saddle in such a way that my left foot remained caught in the stirrup. I tried to hold on to his belly, but the animal was frightened and started to run down the road. Or, rather, he tried to run, and actually took a couple of leaps, when a muleteer who happened to be nearby rushed to my aid in time to seize the reins and to stop the donkey, not without effort nor without danger to himself. When the beast had been subdued, I freed myself from the stirrup and stood on my feet.

“You were lucky," said the muleteer.

And he was right: if the donkey had run away, I should have been really hurt, and who can say that death would not have been the outcome. A broken head, a congestion, an internal injury of some sort, and there would have been the end of my fine education. The muleteer had perhaps saved my life; in fact, I was sure of it; I felt it in my blood. Kind muleteer! While I was regaining possession of myself, he was repairing the donkey's harness with great care and skill. I resolved to give him three of the five gold coins that I had with me; not because this was the value of my life—it would have been immeasurable—but because it was a reward worthy of the selflessness with which he had rescued me. Definitely, I would give him three of the coins.

"All ready," he said, handing me the reins.

“Not yet,” I replied; “I’m still trying to pull myself together . . .”

“Why, what's the trouble?"

"Wasn't I nearly killed?"

"If the ass ran away, you might have been; but, with the help of the Lord, everything's all right now."

I went to the saddle-bags, took out an old vest in the pocket of which I kept the five gold coins, and, as I did so, wondered whether the reward was not excessive, whether two coins would not suffice. Perhaps one. In truth, one coin would be enough to give him shivers of joy. I looked at his clothes; he was a poor devil, who doubtless had never seen a gold coin. Therefore, one coin. I took it out, I saw it shine in the sunlight. The muleteer did not see it, because I had my back turned towards him; but perhaps he suspected something, for he began to talk to the donkey in a significative manner: he gave him advice, told him to be good because otherwise the "fine gentleman" might punish him, and so on—a fatherly discourse. So help me God, I even heard the smack of a kiss; it was the muleteer kissing the donkey on the forehead.

"Say!" I exclaimed.

"Please excuse me, but the devil of a beast looks at a fellow in such a knowing way . . .”

I laughed, hesitated, placed a silver crusado in his hand, mounted the donkey, and set off at a fast pace, a little troubled or, more precisely, a little uncertain about the effect of the silver coin. But at a short distance I looked back: the muleteer was bowing his thanks, and looked overjoyed. I thought that he must be so, indeed; I had paid him well, perhaps too well. I put my fingers in the vest that I was wearing and felt some copper coins; they were pennies, which I should have given to the muleteer instead of the silver crusado. For, after all, he had not thought about a reward or about the virtue of his act, he had merely yielded to a natural impulse, to his temperament, to the habits of his trade. Furthermore, the fact that he had happened to be not farther along the road nor farther back but exactly at the point where the accident occurred seemed to indicate that he had been merely an instrument of Providence. One way or the other, there was really no personal merit in his act. This thought made me miserable; I called myself wasteful, I charged the crusado mentally to the account of my prodigal past. I felt (why not tell the whole truth?), I actually felt remorse. (pp. 52-53)

71. The Defect of This Book: 

I am beginning to be sorry that I ever undertook to write this book. Not that it bores me; I have nothing else to do; indeed, it is a welcome distraction from eternity. But the book is tedious, it smells of the tomb, it has a rigor mortis about it; a serious fault, and yet a relatively small one, for the great defect of this book is you, reader. You want to live fast, to get to the end, and the book ambles along slowly; you like straight, solid narrative and a smooth style, but this book and my style are like a pair of drunks: they stagger to the right and to the left, they start and they stop, they mutter, they roar, they guffaw, they threaten the sky, they slip and fall . . .

And fall! Unhappy leaves of my cypress tree, you had to fall, like everything else that is lovely and beautiful; if I had eyes, I would shed a tear of remembrance for you. And this is the great advantage in being dead, that if you have no mouth with which to laugh, neither have you eyes with which to cry. (pp. 117-18)

111. The Wall:

As it is my practice here to conceal nothing, I shall relate on this page the episode of the wall. Virgilia and Lobo Neves were soon to sail. Entering Dona Placida's house, I saw on the table a folded piece of paper. It was a note from Virgilia. It said that she would be waiting for me in the garden at sundown, without fail. It concluded, "The wall is low on the side toward the little path." 

I made a gesture of displeasure. The letter seemed to me extraordinarily audacious, ill-considered, and even ridiculous. It not only invited scandal, it invited it together with laughter and sneers. I pictured myself leaping over the wall and caught in the act by an officer of the law, who led me off to jail. "The wall is low . . " And what if it was low? Obviously Virgilia did not know what she was doing; perhaps by now she wished she had not sent the note. I looked at it, a small piece of paper, wrinkled but inflexible. I felt an urge to tear it in thirty thousand pieces and to throw it to the wind as the last vestige of my adventure; but I did not do so. Self-love, shame at the thought of fleeing from danger . . . There was no way out; I would have to go.

"Tell her I'll go."

"Where?" asked Dona Placida.

"Where she said she would wait for me."

"She said nothing to me."

"In this note."

Dona Placida stared. "But this piece of paper, I found it this morning in your drawer and I thought that . . .”

I felt a queer sensation. I reread the paper and looked at it a long time; it was, indeed, an old note that Virgilia had sent me in the early days of our love, and I had leaped the cooperatively low wall and had met her in the garden. I had put the note away and . . . I felt a queer sensation. (pp. 164-65)

I would take a bureau drawer full of old letters—from friends, relatives, girls (including Marcella)—would spill them onto a table, would open and read them all, and would recompose the past . . .  Unenlightened reader, if you do not keep the letters of your youth you will never enjoy the pleasure of seeing yourself, far off in the flatteringly dim light, with a three-cornered hat, seven-league boots, and curled mustachios, dancing at a ball to the music of Anacreontic pipes. By all means, save the letters of your youth.

Or, if you do not like the figure of the three-cornered hat, I shall use an expression of an old sailor who used to come to Cotrim's house. I shall say that, if you save the letters of your youth, you will be able to "sing a yearning." It seems that our sailors give this name to songs about the land that are sung only at sea. It would be hard to find a more poetic expression of nostalgia. (p. 169)
