The cruise ship life is very surreal.  The concept of time is distorted and the observance of a normal life feels absurd.  When I joined the cruise ship, I didn’t know how different life would feel. One day feels like three days.  You have a relationship with someone for a few nights, and you feel like you have been seeing each other for a couple months.  The hours and days blend into each other, nights and days becoming one.  Social norms are different and are hard to understand at first, the cultures between nationalities clashing, though, the dynamics keep the energy exciting and vibrant. The life of an ordinary person on the streets at port sounds so lackluster compared to the one you now have acclimated too. You meet many different people who have many different reasons for joining the ship life: some of them running away from their lives at home, some of them need it for the money to support their families, others, were just looking for an adventure. I joined the cruise ship in early November 2017. I was 22 years old and just graduated university as a Cinema/TV major and Animation and Psychology minor.  I was looking for an adventure and a job in my field, videography. I flew into La Haina, Maui, and from there I was picked up and taken to the the ship.

In every moment, you should make the most of it no matter where the road takes you. Crisfield, the world capital of blue crabs was a ghost town in the middle of nowhere Maryland. The streets were empty and looked abandoned. But I was still determined. I walked and walked observing every little spot in search of some blue crab. I finally stumbled upon a place that the lady is painting that offered 99 cent crab. I walked into the place only to be informed that they didn’t do the offer on holidays. I was saddened by the news but still kept my hopes high, I exchanged some conversations and then something happened. Lo and behold, I was offered a tray full of crab to take with me back to the ship. Throwback to the start of cruise life last year in Guilford. This tiny town helped me walk through solitude one step at a time. She let me explore every building, every tree, every flower. I felt reconnected with the voice within, the thoughts started to flow and I came alive and fell in love with travel all over again. It was my first solo trip after over six years. I am thankful for the opportunity to have explored the rivers of Florida all the way through Maine. The peacemaker, The day we got into Brunswick, Georgia; I rushed out of my crew quarters heading down to the first deck to start my shift. I couldn’t get make my way past the door as I marveled at the beauty of this ancient glory docked right next to us. Her name is peacemaker, she hails from Brazil and she is owned by “the twelve tribes”. The wild thing about this story is I am friends with this community of people that live across the United States and other parts of the world. I have the opportunity to visit them in Chattanooga, Colorado Springs, California and now in Georgia. After my shift, I raced to the yellow deli, the music beckoned me and the smiles reminded that I was back in a place where I have learned a lot at, especially about living in community. I was greeted by Simha, this vibrant and beautiful African American sister. She shared how she has been part of the community and I shared my past interactions as well. As I sipped on my coffee, she started handing me hummus and pita chips, spinach pie, dessert to take with me on the journey. I was just baffled at the constant kindness that i have received from the people that I meet at the deli. While I was busy connecting, I had realized that it was time for me to get back to my ship to start work. Simha stopped me and asked a friend visiting from Tennessee if she would be able to give me a ride to where the marina was and she did. It’s wild how I started my day seeing the peacemaker and ended up in the yellow deli that day only find out that they owned the beauty docked next to me. However small a town is, you never know who you will meet or what stories you will be a part of. “And through it all, through it all My eyes are on You And through it all, through it all It is well.” River cruising has been an adventure and a mystery, I have been blessed with majestic sunrise and sunsets! Most of the time, I am the server who is telling my passengers to look out of the window or opening the blinds so that they can experience the glory around them. Nature truly is a booster for me to push through the hard days, it’s a reminder of his promise through it all. This sunset was on the day when our 100 passenger river cruise ship had to go into the ocean with 5-6 foot waves through a storm, it was truly a wild ride, it rocked the boat so much that our drawers and mattress came flying into our main living space. This adventurous evening called for an early release and an invitation into this sunset followed by double rainbows. These moments make me realize that he has always been there, through it all, my gaze on the one, my beloved, my creator, the master artist. Today, I walked into a store in Downtown Wilmington, North Carolina and they played, “it is well” by Kristen Dimarco. I really needed a boost of his presence and his comfort and he met me through this song and I was totally floored by his care and love for my soul. As I continue to gaze upon the beauty in his creation, let me draw nearer to him, the one who created it all.
