If one lives in a big city (Chicago), it’s important to get out of the city and out of the main burbs.
Lots of the small towns in IL have “Cruise Nights,” where the mainstreets are shut down, and people enter their classic cars to support local charities.
For spectators, the events are free!
Show up, find a place to park, then stroll up and down admiring the cars, and chatting with their owners (if you feel like it).
There’s a lot of culture outside of the metropolis areas, and it’s worth visiting!

1959 DeSoto wagon by Paul Balze
Via Flickr:
There's a period child seat in the back, along with period travel games and vacation-spot stickers on the windows. It's like it just came back from a family vacation--in 1961. Lost in the 50s cruise night, Marley Station Mall, Glen Burnie, MD, April 5, 2008.
