I think my favourite headcanon that I have is that zag loves I’m gonna claw out your eyes (and drown you to death) and mel loves hymn to zagreus, and sometimes they annoy each other by trying to sing their respective songs louder than the other

Plant of the Day
Saturday 25 January 2025
This old hedge of Griselinia littoralis (New Zealand broadleaf) has had the lower branches removed exposing these characterful trunks. This crown lifting has allowed more space and light for the adjacent borders as the protection of the lowered evergreen foliage was no longer needed. This shrub or tree does best in a well-drained soil in full sun.

Little idle thought I've been having recently but I think Cyparissus' story is very important for characterising Apollo and Apollo's love. It's so easy to think of love and loss as two ends of a spectrum, likewise, so often, death is seen as an ultimate and tragic end in love stories - something final and inescapably tragic, the only force that halts love by separating the lovers.
Cyparissus' story is... not that. Yes, the deer dies and one can conclude then that death is once more at the heart of separating two lovers, but I think Cyparissus specifically requesting to die, specifically begging Apollo to let him grieve forever even after Apollo has done his best to help Cyparissus move on from the accident and Apollo letting him is a powerful thing.
Because Apollo not only puts Cyparissus' wishes over his own, he's also able to see past his own building grief to immortalise Cyparissus in such a way that both grants him his wish and allows other people to glorify Cyparissus as well! And I think such a beautiful thing is something criminally overlooked!
It's become something of a joke that 'all Apollo's lovers turn into plants' but from a functional perspective, flowers are the most brilliant way to keep the spirit of a beloved thing alive. Flowers are like stars - as long as there are humans, humans will always contemplate the nature of flowers and as the god of poetry and song, Apollo creating opportunities for his beloved mortals to be remembered eternally even if they never seized glory in the traditional way is such an intimate and beautiful thing. Even then, Cyparissus is elevated to a similar status as Daphne with Apollo's actions - not merely a plant or flower but one that specifically symbolises him, one that is extremely fragrant and beloved by him. Just as Daphne's laurels were synonymous with glory and victory, Cyparissus' cypress became a emblematic of grief and remembrance. Even today, thousands of years later, people still view cypress trees as mourning trees and plant them in cemeteries and use the ash in incense burnt in remembrance of others. How's that for Apollo keeping his word.
#ginger rambles#I think we should talk more about how Apollo's ability to immortalise people into those coveted halls of memory is so often done out of love#and how it is the closest many of his beloved mortals will ever get to godhood but even that is leagues better than the hundreds of warriors#and kings and scholars who worked for glory their whole lives only to be forgotten and lost among the sea of time and history#And then you have Daphne and Hyacinthus and Coronis Cyparissus and Evadne even Branchus whose affair is marked with the sprawling arms#or trees and forests - who would ever say they were unloved?#Daphne is eternally interesting to me btw because like idk what anyone says it doesn't matter that Apollo was hexed to love her by Eros#Even if what Apollo felt wasn't 'true' love he did feel true regret and made real and true penitence. Apollo literally spent#the rest of his immortal days wearing Daphne's laurels and making her his symbol until she became so synonymous with gods and glory that she#became symbolic of the gods and their kings themselves! Like!! It's obscure knowledge now that gods like Zeus and Poseidon had their own#preferred plants to wear as wreath crowns because laurel-crown is so iconic as the Look of a greek god#how could you not see that as love? even if it's retroactive? Apollo worked so hard to give her the glory he robbed from her and people#still choose to focus on the chase + transformation and “oh well Apollo and Daphne wasn't a love story it was assault/a curse!!”#my brother in Christ it counted to Apollo so it counts to me too#anyway just something I've been thinking about#apollo#cyparissus#daphne#greek mythology#ginger chats about greek myths

ANSWERS: How much does Tumblr know about the British upper class and aristocracy? ORIGINAL POST HERE
Tumblr media
Do you know why people pay for private members' clubs in London?
A: It's like having your own staffed living room in the centre of town. It's familiar in terms of dress code, behaviour, discretion, and even interior decor. The behaviour part is most important; it takes away most of the uncertainties of dining in public, and you won't be photographed. Examples include The Carlton Club and The Caledonian Club. With the big daddies being White's (mentioned in Bridgerton) and the Aspinall club. This gif from Netflix's 'The Gentlemen' strike me as a club environment.
Tumblr media
What is Ascot?
A: "The races" refers to horse racing. Ascot is possibly the biggest event of that particular calendar. It has a dress code which varies between enclosures (this is where the people are sorted into areas depending on how much they paid for their tickets/if they're a member of the club) but generally dictates suits and hats.
What is a duke/duchess?
A: the highest ranking member of the peerage (the titled aristocracy). Prince William became the Duke of Cambridge when he married his wife Catherine Middleton.
What is millinery?
A: Hat making for events such as Ascot. I reccomend Phillip Treacy's website for examples. He has designed for the Royals on numerous occasions.
Does a marchioness rank above a duke?
A: A marchioness is the wife or widow of a marquess. The five ranks of British nobility, in descending order, are duke, marquess, earl, viscount, and baron. Here for more info
What is the House of Lords?
A: The second chamber of the British Parliament. Quite literally full of Lords unelected by the public. Most are appointed seats for their lifespan for achievements in their careers, some are hereditary seats. (Yes, really)
What is primogeniture?
A: The rule that a title can only be inherited by the eldest male offspring. Passing over any females even if the nearest male heir is a cousin of the main family. This doesn't apply to the Royal family anymore, but it does apply to other members of the peerage.
Which career do graduates from Norland college pursue?
A: Nannies to the super rich. (They're kind of awesome)
What is Harrods?
A: The most upscale department store in the world. They used to cater all ALL the whims of the super-wealthy - able to procure pretty much anything, including a lion. There's an old joke that someone asked Harrods to procure a camel for them and the sales associate replied, "With one hump or two?"
What is a Royal Warrant?
A: A Royal Warrant of Appointment is granted as a mark of recognition to people or companies who have regularly supplied goods or services to the Royal Household.
What type of clothing is associated with Savile Row?
A: Bespoke and tailored suits for men.
What is Henley Royal Regatta?
A series of rowing races held at Henley, also known as the Mecca of Rowing. Similar to Ascot in some regards.
When can a tiara be worn, and by whom?
A: By married women, at white tie events and coronations, and only after six o'clock in the evening. The exception is for a bride on her wedding day. You don't actually have to be titled to wear one.
What is finishing school?
A course one might attend after school to learn the necessary skills for their place in society as a socialite, a leader or a public figure. Posture, table manners, hosting, smalltalk, even getting out of low cars in short skirts can feature on the curriculum. This is generally regarded as very posh.
If you actually read down here I hope you found it interesting - it took me ages to type this all out lmao :)

Ar-Pharazon from the Reverse Gondolin AU and as Witch-King of Numenor - thanks to @who-needs-words for helping develop this idea!
#silm#silmarillion#second age#ar pharazon#reverse gondolin au#(well more like the aftermath of gondolin reversal)#this au has consumed my life#on the plus side inspiration for feanor is finally reemerging from under the metaphorical couch so i might get something finwion-y done soo#aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa so much to draw so little time#seriously though golden nazgul is such a cool idea#whatever the mordor equivalent for the angband trio is (sauron pharazon and shelob maybe?) is going to look so cool in black and gold#black/gold black hole shelob!!#and prince elrond is super finwiony looking#also he has his wings & glowiness out a lot more so that'll be fun#but yeah basically in the au Prince Elrond realized via foresight what was happening/going to happen in numenor#so he went there and disowned ar pharazon (by extension removing him from the throne) and crowned tar miriel rightful Ruling Queen#then later when sauron showed up he came back kicked sauron out and outlawed the death cult#but between that time sauron secretly recruited ar pharazon by promising him kingship in exchange for his support#and anyways ar pharazon survived all the way to the TA as the Witch King#(mr. angmar here gets to be second in command of the nazgul sorry)#-imagine this guy showing up to be all 'bagginssss' though#the witch king of numenor is somehow even more dramatic#also the whole 'no living man can kill me' is. a bit different coming from a guy who has many enemies in the form of#a) his cousin the Ruling Queen of Numenor#b) his uncle the choice-of-elves-peredhel#c) a bunch of Faithful in the Halls#the dead guys aren't too much of a problem#but i wonder if he heard that prophecy and worried a whole lot more about the Ruling Queens#or Prince Elrond who in the au has very definitely embraced his maia-ness#and then imagine his surprise hearing 'but no living man am i' and it coming from. a random human lady.

Another ✨library haul✨
Sooo I may have gone a bit overboard this time…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
FIFTEEN BOOKS!!! And this isn’t counting the 8 or so I got before these and still have… guess I really gotta get reading!
The themes that are emerging here are trans women, lesbians, and sci-fi—all things I am always loving 😌 I’m particularly excited about These Fragile Graces, This Fugitive Heart by Izzy Wasserstein, a new release that I specifically requested our collection developer to buy and put on hold for me, the Monk & Robot duology by Becky Chambers (A Psalm for the Wild Built and A Prayer for the Crown Shy), and (almost) all of the books in Martha Wells’ Murderbot Diaries series—I’m still waiting on the second one to come back!
I’m very excited to get around to these, but more than anything, I’m grateful my library has such a great collection for so many of the books I’ve been wanting to read for so long and for newer releases too :)
