Hey Crow! I'm sending this to you since I wanna talk about the Crowmen from Gloomwood! And I think you'd like them. For obvious reasons.
Tumblr media
The Crowmen are probably the scariest enemy in the game by far, and the strongest. They can crawl through vents, jump across gaps, spit acid, and rend you with their claws. Plus, they can peck you which I find funny. They also take 4 revolver shots or 2 shotgun shells to take out, the most out of any regular enemy so far (other than the Goatman but that's a boss in my eyes). This is a problem since ammo is rare and the shotgun only holds 5 shells at a time (you can guess how many bullets the revolver holds), and reloading takes a while. Running isn't really an option either since they outpace you. Even worse, you can't see them in the dark, and holding out the lantern means you can't hold the shotgun. You can't even backstab them due to their spines being made of steel! They got baby versions called Baby Crowmen which will pop out of eggs on the ground, if you go near said eggs. They don't do much. They look funny when you hold them after killing them though.

Finally is the Crowking! They don't have clothes and resemble the Crow babies more. They take 3 shotgun shells and do the same things as a regular Crowman, but they also vomit up eggs and can screech to hatch all nearby eggs. They only appear in the deepest regions of The Hive, in a weird ancient city. As I send this image, I just realized they seem to have eyes? I can't exactly tell if those are eyes or eggs in the skull. Likely eyes.
Tumblr media
The Hive is full of some weird green mucus/webbing, which I assume comes from the Crowmen.
We have no clue what the life cycle is but I think it starts with the Baby Crowmen digging into the body of a human host, and when they mature, they then break open the skull like a chick pecking out of an egg, replacing the head with their own. Maybe the spine is replaced too or something, since the spine is steel and looks to pop out of the back. I imagine the mutation of the legs and hands comes soon after. I assume the Crowkings are either the very end of the life cycle, or are some form of sexual dimorphism. I have no clue. One thing about the Crowmen is that they seem to eat everything and anything, even the corpses of eachother, or the corpses of their infants!
If there's something edible around and they're not actively attacking you, the Crowmen will drop everything they're doing to consume it. They seem to be focused on nothing but eating, since you can walk right next to them without even needing to sneak when they're gorging. Strangely, we never see them attack each other, so I can only assume that Crowman 'culture' is first come first serve and they all respect that for some reason.
And that's what I've to say about our dapper little corvid monstrousities.
DUDE I FUCKING LOVE THEM OMG?!?? DAPPER CROW MONSTERS?!!! I AM SIMPING!! I GOTTA PLAY THIS GAME THANK YOU FOR THE CROWMEN PROPAGANDA!!

Gloomwood Gameplay Trailer PC Steam
Gloomwood is a stealth horror FPS that follows your mysterious abduction to a forgotten, twisted Victorian metropolis in the midst of a horrifying transformation. Wield your canesword and take to the shadows as you uncover the accursed mystery hidden within the fog.
From the producers of DUSK, AMID EVIL and FAITH comes a frightening, gothic immersive sim that will have you explore haunted streets, dark tunnels and decadent mansions.
An intricate, hand-crafted city with freeform exploration - from towering rooftops down to hidden passages, the routes you take and paths you make, are your choice. A Detailed stealth and sound system that tracks your light visibility and propagates noise accurately through the world. Tread lightly. Or prepare to get loud.
A unique arsenal to meet any situation - a stealthy canesword, six-shot revolver, folding shotgun, hand-placed traps, rope-slinging harpoon rifle and more. In-depth player interactivity, from leaning to eavesdrop, peeking through door cracks, checking the remaining bullets in your firearms and mantling onto ledges. The town is full of objects to pick up, throw, climb and smash and use to your advantage.
A mob of ghastly denizens and monsters with acute senses, like the sharp-clawed Crowmen and the fearsome, cadaver-seeking Corpse Duster.

Gloomwood is a Thief-like survival horror from the makers of Dusk
The Thief games, the first two in particular, are still some of the best stealth games around. Skulking in the shadows of a made-up historical city, preying on your targets using any number of strategies, they define so much of what makes the genre pleasing. Gloomwood is a new, horror-inflected take on the classic Thief formula from the developer of Dusk that's a little less concerned about brevity.
The announcement trailer premiered during this year's PC Gaming Show, giving a brief 90 second tour of the old-school, nineties visuals and gruesome encounters we can expect. The city is a neo-Victorian metropolis that's been cursed, and you're trapped inside, forcing you to tentatively find your way out of this doomed hellhole.
Although it looks like Thief, and shares a lot of the core principles, this has more survival horror elements, and your methods can be more indiscreet. The map is open-world, and you'll have a wide arsenal to choose from, including a stealthy canesword, six-shot revolver, and a rope-slinging harpoon rifle. The main plague-mask wearing enemies in the trailer are presumably the crowmen, the Steam page promises "a mob of ghastly denizens", so expect the creep factor dialed up on any Victorian neighbors.

finished playing through the hive. and holy shit. the crowmen. it was so cool getting to see so much more of them beyond their introduction in the first part of the underport.
the thing that stood out to me the most was the way they seem to prioritize eating things over everything else. the crowmen that are hunched over a pile of bodies eating them seem to be less perceptive. and when one has been alerted, if there is a corpse of another crowman/ a baby crowman they will eat that before beginning their search for you.
i missed some areas when i was exploring the hive, so it’s possible that i missed some important lore, but i had always assumed that the crowmen were mutated humans, although seeing that they hatch from eggs might make that theory a little less likely. but either way, it’s so unsettling to see that there is no humanity left in them; they loudly gorge on corpses to a point where they’re choking and gagging from how fast they’re eating, and they eat their own kind without hesitation. seemingly all that’s left of whatever they used to be is their humanoid figure and the undersized and ripped clothes they wear. and i think that is so unsettling and so interesting. is it obvious that they’re my favourite enemies in the game.

Finished the Gloomwood Hive! I have a ton of thoughts about that
One, that was really damn good. And scary! Really good design with forcing you to choose between seeing the crowmen but them having a high chance of seeing you, or extinguishing the lantern and risking bumping into one.
The Ancient City part was also really cool! The Crow Kings are very threatening, taking I think 4 shotgun shells? They still burn easily though. I didn't find much use of the flares unfortunately.
The ending part was amazing, with the elevator slowly coming down and all the crowmen sprinting at the area due to the noise. Unfortunately, I kinda killed all the crowmen in the area since I brought a ton of shotgun ammo with me, so there were only like 2 or 3 to hide from. I swear though, one of them was eating a corpse right across from me, and when he finished he dashed right to where I was. I think he somehow spotted me, but I'm not sure. I managed to stay hidden though.
also HOLY FUCK IS THAT THE SUN??? I thought the entire game would stay at night, but I guess not! Seriously, that area climbing up the shaft gave me the same vibes as entering the lighthouse for the first time. Pure relief and safety.
Hopefully they add an easier way to get back *in* to the Hive, since there's still a lot of treasure I left down there. Or maybe there is and I've yet to find it. Hopefully I don't have to go through the entire trip multiple times just to get all the treasure.
Also..

Cigar Huntsman. I like to think this is a painting of Hobbs.
