Related to the birds and capsaicin thing:

Do you know if birds feel an effect from horseradish/wasabi/mustard etc? I once tossed out a few of my wasabi peas to share with parkinglot-picking crowfolk but couldn’t stick around to see their reaction…

That I don't know, but it's an interesting question... I can't help imagining it making their heads do the poofy feather thing -- it certainly makes my scalp feel weird.

Background info

The Solace Guardianship is as corrupt as the other Guardianships in their country, but they try to use it to improve the quality of life in their area. Callison started working for them at 16 and is pretty well liked, albeit rarely taken seriously.

The Sunset Syndicate has its base in the neighboring town, Vespera. Its former boss was extremely cruel and took personal offense when it came to the Solace Guardianship's way of running things. When Rion tried intervene once civilians got dragged in, he was locked up and torture (not for the first time). Al decided it was time for a coup and killed the previous boss, leaving him in charge. A lot of people were killed during that coup, but it ended the conflict between them and the Solace Guardianship. Al has managed to broker a shaky alliance between the two factions.

Crowfolk:

Crowfolk have hollow bones. Some have wings, but most are flightless. Callison doesn't have wings. Rion did, and he was one of the few Crowfolk capable of flight. The previous boss had Rion's wings torn off during the conflict with Solace. Crowfolk have drastically varied lifespans. This is due to their huge magical aptitude, theirs being the highest among the known species, though this comes at the cost of a 50% chance that they'll die the first time they use magic (This reason is why the Crowfolk not born with magic rarely learn to use it). Those without magic will live to fifty, while those with magic will stop ageing when they reach 19 years of age (roughly physically equivalent to 25 in human years) or when they learn magic if they learn it after 16.

Dragon Touched:

People who have lived near a dragon for generations. Each generation becomes more draconic than the last. Common features are scales, horns and tail, while rarer ones are wings and fire magic. Their personalities also become more dragon-like, possessiveness and hoarding are common traits, while heightened arrogance and long memories are less so. All dragon touched have a lengthened lifespan. Those of fourth generation onward (Al is fifth generation) stop ageing at 30.

For Better or for Worse

Fantasy Buddy Comedy about a Lesbian who wants to confess to her crush but doesn't know how to flirt. She asks her friends and colleges for advice, but since she's in the closet, all the advice is for flirting with guys.

She proceeds to ask a former enemy famous for sleeping around for advice because no one would believe him if he told people she was gay. He gives shitty advice. Like really bad. He also tells his bodyguard/boyfriend about her the second he walks in. Fortunately, the boyfriend gives less shitty advice (eventually).

The girl is an intern at the local police force, the enemy is the new leader of the outlaws' guild and his bodyguard is still a bodyguard. The crush is a student at a nearby university.

The girl and the bodyguard are crowfolk, which resemble humans but evolved from crows (They look like normal humans with black, purple, blue or green hair and are hella pale. Most of them don't have wings, and those that do usually can't fly with them). The crush is half elf and the boss is dragon touched (They both look like normal humans).

Shenanigans ensue.
