Hey to all artists! I want to talk about our art journey. Some of us have a long path, some have started only recently, but each of us has had our own individual path and I think it's really important to remember how we all started. And it's also important to share it with others so that no one would be scared to start their own journey and just create.

How did you start drawing? What year was it that you become more seriously and consciously interested in it?

I started drawing when I was super young, but unfortunately I don't have any of those saved anymore. I always doodled and would draw monsters and people lmao

When did you feel the urge to share your art with other people? When did you start posting your drawings on social media?

I started posting them on social media maybe in college.

Your first/earliest drawing. What were your impressions of it back then and what are your feelings now?

Definitely not my earliest, but here's a very bad drawing of my bedroom that I did in 2002. I clearly did not know how perspective worked lmao. And my first digital drawings were some original comic book characters made in ~2008. No idea what program I used to draw them in... but probably MS Paint.

Your first fanart ever.

My first fanart ever was Link from the Legend of Zelda, which I don't have anymore. But here's some fanart of a Spawn comic cover I did around 8th grade (~2004), My Chemical Romance I did in high school (~2006), and a half sketch of Oded Fehr I did in college (~2011).

When you had bad days and things didn't work out, what inspired you to keep trying?

Getting comments and kudos lmao I am a slut for feedback

Show your old piece that you strongly dislike and tell why.

This Johnlock one. I haaaate their faces and how the baby looks.

Show your old piece that you really like and tell why. What's the difference with the previous?

I still really like this piece of Homestuck fanart that I did (for the fic Real Men Wear Tights). I don't like their figures, but I like the colors, flow, and overall shape of the wind character, plus the sky and fabric.

Do you do any practice sketches or warm-ups before you draw something big?

Nope! Typically I only do about 2 rounds of sketches, a very rough one, then a neater one, then the final lines and coloring. No warmups!

I always delete my sketch layers so unfortunately I don't have any, but here's what the first round of sketches usually look like!

But here are the steps I do when I do my actual drawings! I do a couple rough sketches (like above) then a final outline. Block in the biggest colors first, then lock each layer and add shadows and highlights, then finally add overall lighting/color shift if things don't look how I want them to. Little details like the writing on the plaque below or Ian's freckles usually get their own layers.

I think my forms have gotten better and my lines have gotten neater and more confident!

Any advice you'd give to your earlier self?

Stop drawing people facing left in profile (I did not stop doing this)

Set a goal for yourself for the coming year.

Draw more and experiment with different styles! I really want to get better with coloring and lighting, which I always struggle with.
