Nalbinding in G/T
Fiber Arts | Knitting | Crochet | Sewing
Honestly, this was the post I was most excited to make when I started this blog! I haven't seen many people talking about nalbinding, as it's not as widely known, but I think it could be a dark horse g/t fiber art.
The name nalbinding comes from Danish, literally meaning needle binding. It's a way to produce fabric from short pieces of wool yarn, using a large and blunt sewing needle-shaped tool to create stitches looped through one another. Tension can be kept over the thumb or the needle itself, and when torn or worn down, the fabric will not unravel!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It predates knitting and crochet by many centuries, although in form it is most similar to the latter. One stitch is worked at a time by running the needle through the working loops and the ever-growing fabric. There are many types of stitches with differing densities, tensions, and functions. Like crochet, nalbinding is very good for making things with odd or circular shapes, like socks or mittens or hats.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nalbinding came into my radar when someone adjacent to my crafting circles asked about it, and I fell down the rabbit hole. It's still a relatively new craft to me, but it's gotten me so excited by the idea of sharing this with the g/t community!
For a brief history and demonstration of nalbinding (mostly to keep this post from being entirely too long) I highly recommend this short video. It certainly piqued my interest when I first heard of nalbinding!
The Potential
Nalbinding would be one of the easiest crafts to maintain by a tiny or a giant, in my opinion! For one thing, it's designed to use shorter amount of yarn at a time compared to knitting or crochet, which could be handy in environments of scarce wool sourcing (like a giant or tiny scavenging for materials). Wool would be ideal, since the fibers at the end of the yarn can easily be felted together in order to join a new strand, but it could likely be done with any fiber available.
The needles would be easy to come by as well since they can be made of wood, antler, or bone. So long as those materials are around, one can make a long, wide, and flat needle to use!
There are also more open-weave forms of nalbinding that could be great for mesh fabrics! Great for hunting/fishing for more outdoorsy giants/tinies, or bags for carrying larger items made with more conservative amounts of materials. Here's a tutorial video of someone using this looping style of nalbinding with plant fibers:
youtube
Nalbinding is a newer craft for me, and I'm still taking time to learn more about it! The project I have on the needle right now is going to be a small pouch-style bag; I'm not working from a proper pattern, sort of using the intuition I've learned from crochet to start a circular shape for the base, and now I'm working up the straight sides. It's still in the early stages, so it resembles a shallow bowl more than anything at the moment, but it's coming along!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is definitely more of a ramble than previous posts at this point, but this is a craft I don't see talked about a ton and I more so wanted to put in on the g/t community radar to hopefully get a conversation started! Let me know if this sparks interest, I'd love to see other ideas for the g/t potential with this fiber art!

Finally got the Flora rabbit siblings! 🌷
I plan on getting the entire family one day when I get the money since they're my favorite family so far.
I also plan on buying the Red Roof Cozy Cottage and repainting the roof light blue. I originally wanted the Bluebell Cottage but I doubt I have enough space in my room at the moment.
I followed this tutorial for the crochet coaster I plan on using as a rug in their future cottage 🩵

Spent the afternoon crocheting a few charms for my headphones! I have a pair of each variant. They also look good on purses, keychains, and rearview mirrors…might make some rabbit-shaped ones too. The liliy-of-the-valley and bluebells are adjustable!
These are not my original designs! I first saw them on lilthings Youtube channel. Here are their very beginner-friendly tutorials if you want to make some yourself! The bluebell is just the lily-of-the-valley in blue yarn.

Journeys in Amigurumi (Bingo Roll 1)
Spoiler: This was a challenge!
For my first roll of the bingo card, I got "make an amigurumi" - and as someone who is most comfortable with flat 2D projects with little sewing, I knew this one would really be taking me out of my comfort zone. I'm not happy when I have to sew, and I am incredibly not happy when I have to attempt embroidery.
I may not do a full blog post for each bingo roll, but as this is so completely new to me and a large part of this bingo is the journey, here we go!
For full disclosure, I've made ONE amigurumi project before this, and I haven't picked up the technique once since. So before we dive in - have a quick picture of where I started 12 years ago.
I had to dig some really old photo archives for this one.
Tumblr media
This lil' guy was made to be a warbler for my fandom at the time. I am sure he was based off a pattern, but it's unlikely I'll be able to find it now. I also don't think I know where this lil birb is anymore; he's gotten lost in the shuffle of moving a few times since.
Step 1: Research
Research - Before even choosing a pattern to begin this challenge, I wanted to first understand more about amigurumi, so I took to Youtube, which is my usual place to learn all things.
For my intro to amigurumi, I started with a few channels:
LePetitSaint Crochet, especially this Amigurumi fundamentals playlist; olliehollycrochet, especially this beginner tutorial video; For inspiration, I've also found Skein Spider
There are quite a few amigurumi channels out there - these are just a few that I enjoyed across my youtube dashboard.
The next step of research was finding a pattern, and I feel as though this is the part of the rabbit hole I am going to ADORE continuing to explore.
Step 2: Practice
Before I started "the" project, I wanted to first get a sense of the tension and play around with a project. Just something small. In effort to avoid buying more materials, I took to stash busting some of my scrap cotton. For the test piece, I found the pattern Octobuddy by the blog, Sweet Softies.
As someone with already pretty tight tension, working with a smaller hook took some getting used to, but I liked the way this pattern was written - he's an adorable little Octopus, but it also helped me get used to the shaping and stuffing process. I used household cotton balls since poly-fil isn't the type of thing I just have on hand. I did end up buying some for the final project.
This was a good exercise for me, as I started to feel comfortable with the actual crochet and using a tighter gauge. As I was sewing the eyes, I ended up pulling the cotton up or not being able to push the needle through. He was a bit overstuffed, or maybe I tried to assemble out of order, or maybe it's just my lack of sewing experience striking again.
Tumblr media
Beyond that, the hardest part was in fact the the embroidery of the eyes, and his are quite... something. I was not originally going for the wink, but as the two sides became less uniform, I decided to lean into it. They still turned out pretty shoddy, and I can NOT stand doing this. I told myself never again, but for another spoiler... I did it again.
My Octobuddy might still be a bit overstuffed, but he's super squishy and relaxing to squeeze, just like a stress ball, the perfect size for my palm. So he's been hanging with me at my work desk.
Step 3: Do the thing
I won't say I was ready for the next thing, per se, but I also wasn't getting anywhere just looking at the cool things that could be made with this technique. So why not jump right in?
For my actual pattern selection, I chose "Hubble" by Projectarian, available on ravelry. I love me an aquatic creature, and it called to me that not only was this pattern free, it also came with a beginner friendly pdf, quick reference, and an entire selection of written tips for the new-to-amigurumi crafter.
Squid time!
Again, I wanted to use up scraps, so my first challenge with this pattern was adjusting it for the yarn weight I had on hand to use. As a result, the eyes were made with a way too tight tension. The pattern called for some crochet for the sleeping pupil lines, but there was no way I was going to get my hook in there. For the second time, I took up a sewing needle and attempted embroidery. This time turned out a bit better than the Octopus. I adore how soft he looks with the brown cotton yarn I decided to use when I couldn't find black.
At some point in attaching the legs and tentacles, I did lose track of where I was - but that was on me since I got lazy with the stitch markers. It was so close to the end, I was able to wing it to decrease the final row and stitch up the center. Before then, I added a bit more poly-fil.
I chose not to add pom-poms at the end of the legs for the same reason as I didn't add tassels to the blanket I made. Being a mom of three dogs makes you super aware of the types of things the furbabies will get into. You should've seen their faces when I brought home the poly-fil.
But I'm ranting away and you haven't even seen him yet!!
Step 4: Finished Object!
Tumblr media
Body: Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/4 - Rosewood, 3.5mm Eyes: Hobbii Rainbow Glitter Gold 8/4 - Natural White, Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/4 - Light Brown, 2.00mm Legs and Tentacles: Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/4 - Rosewood, 3.25mm Pattern: Hubble the Squid by Projectarian I call him Hubblet since I made him so small. Sleeeepy squid baby.

Title: The Knitting Trio - Mother's Day 2024
IMPORTANT NOTE: No #OnThisDay share post, today.
Hello, May! 🌏☀️ Its that day of the moms, again! 🤰👩🚺♀️ And I have this artwork, right here in a 90s style setting! 😁📼💿
• Truth be told, these three women had never met each other under the same roof, until now. 👩👩👩 In addition, they're all pregnant with their beloved children inside. 🤰 But, what are they doing while they're pregnant? 🤔Well, there are a lot of things to do while they're pregnant and I think I have the perfect activity; "Knitting". 🧶🧣😊 I was gonna say "Crochet" because my lovable mom always loves crocheting outside of our home, so yeah. When it comes to making huge lengths of the scarf (and other wearables) like what they're doing, "Knitting" is always king, or "QUEEN" because we're celebrating "Mother's Day". 😊 Rita had a little experience of knitting before she aimed at her dream career. But, with a little help from a tutorial by playing a few VHS tapes of the 90s, she can handle it like the mother she was. And she's passing her knowledge to her mommy besties. 😉🧶🧣
Rita 🐶🚺: Absolutely, tama (correct)! I used to be knitting back when I was my elementary school years. I was totally pag-ut-ot (suck) at knitting, and I given up my knitting experience to other hobbies that I've been dreaming of. Sa panahon ngayon (nowadays), with a help of VHS tapes and knitting manuals at my rightful age, I've perfected my pagniniting (knitting) skills, and I'll share my knowledge to my two kaibigang nanays (friendly mommies)! 😊 So, happy mother's day to all nanays! Tandaan (Remember): Your NANAY (MOM) will always LOVE YOU! ☝😁😘👩🤗
Well, that's all for now!

Hello! 😊 A little message to say how much I've enjoyed scrolling your blog just now. Your work is so beautiful!! I'm mostly a quilter (/knitter/spinner/crocheter... You know how it is haha) but a few months ago I saw some blackwork that led me down a rabbit hole and I ended up starting some redwork on linen which has completely revolutionised my feelings about counted stitching (i.e. it's amazing and not the devil's craft afterall!)
Anyway, I just wanted to say how inspiring your work is and how nice it is to find a blog so welcoming to newbie stitchers!
My own little tip to other people just starting out is to keep an eye out in charity shops. I found a kit with an absolutely hideous pattern for about £2.50 which contained a massive piece of linen and tons of thread. I ignored the pattern and had fun just trying different ways of stitching and bits of different free patterns. I learned that stitching in hand was way more intuitive to my quilter brain than using a hoop and from then on there was no stopping me!
Sorry for the ramble, I'm just very excited about sewing haha
ah thank you!! my great-gran was a quilter, i have so much respect for the craft! and welcome to blackwork/redwork cross stitch!! i love new people, honestly i love stitch so much and watching other people discover this joy feeds my soul so much omg <3
and this is a very good tip for newbies!! i have a piece of spare aida like this that i use to test colors on, i just fill in bits here and there. it's a brilliant idea to test a bunch of methods, try some things out (check out the peacock and fig tutorials, or cross stitch youtubers (flosstube) like notorious needle or mr x stitch) on fabric that isn't your main project and you can test some stuff without worrying about ruining something.
i hope your redwork goes fantastically my dear and do tag when you finish your project, i would love to see it!

as someone with terrible motivation and also (possibly?) autism i can not begin to explain to you what scrolling through instagram and finding a crochet rabbit hole of videos tutorials patterns creations does to my brain. im currently on the train home and i already want to go get my knitting needles and start knitting again. girl the algorithms are algorithming my brain. i need to learn to crochet and craft and sew and knit the cute sweater i saw and make the beanie i saw and also the cute duck plushie and i need it NOW. im so overstimulated in the best and worst way possible. and yes i have 500 unfinished craft projects. girl help. im drowning in felt and strings. i need to embroider my sweater and finish the eyes of my shin plushie but i fucked them up and i don't know if i wanna redo it because i already sewed the doll together along with his hair so now im debating on finishing it or not. anyway. time to learn to crochet!!!!

I need a side job for an online shop but I can't afford a printer to make stickers or art posters what are your suggestions of other craft things I could learn?
I thought about pins but I'm not sure how they're made.
this ask actually came at a funny time cause i am closing my etsy shop until further notice cause im not really interested in selling rn haha, but!!! i do have some ideas for you!!
clay pins! these can be really fun to make and i think theyre still popular! theres a lot of tutorials on youtube on how to make them, but youre gonna need white clay and paint (or colored polymer clay if you dont want to paint them), pin backings (you can get these at any craft store) and something to seal them (you can use mod podge or polymer clay glaze for this!) theres a lot of fun designs you can make for these and theyre cheaper than making enamel pins
painted wood things! if you are artistic and can paint stuff, get some mini wood circles/hearts and paint a design, then superglue on a pin backing, then boom its a pin! this is an alternative to clay pins if you dont want to deal with clay haha. i can find small wood pieces at any craft store for cheap and i have too many of them lying around lol
go to any store that does printing and print stuff if you dont have a printer! for awhile before i got my printer i would order printed stuff from staples for cheap. id look into this if you have a lot of ideas for art prints or zines, theres a lot of options!!
if you have some cash to spare, look into stickerapp!! they print die-cut stickers and sticker sheets, and they havent failed me yet, all their stuff turns out good and they have options for different quantities of stickers.
you may want to look into digital products if youre tech savvy! on etsy you can make good passive income from digital items like downloadable prints, digital stickers, desktop icons, templates, etc. this is kinda a hard market to get into cause theres a lot of competition, but theres a lot of different things you can do with digital products.
going back to clay cause its the most affordable thing i feel, you can make trinket dishes, charms for jewelry, keychains, figurines, etc. people always seem to be interested in little things like that, and i feel like clay, especially polymer clay can be a fun rabbit hole to dive down with all the different tutorials and things you can do with it out there :) air dry clay stuff is great too!
resin can be touchy for some people cause it can be messy and toxic if you dont have good ventilation, but i used to make shaker charms with molds i got for like 2 bucks off etsy as well as jewelry! check out some tutorials for this one if you'd like to get into this world, it can be fun!
if you want to get into button pin making, id check out badge-a-minit! they were my first intro to pin making, and you can get a starter kit for like $30 i think?? the price may have changed but thats what i paid for like 3 years ago lol
do you know how to crochet?? crochet plushies and even digital patterns are still super popular!! its fun and relaxing too if you want to get into it
overall these are the first things that popped into my head when it comes to crafty things to sell, i hope it was somewhat helpful ;_; if you'd like to really dive into the world of products and marketing for artists, i highly recommend checking out kelsey rodriguez on youtube!! she has lots of good advice for artists and just recently came out with a video specifically for products that artists can sell!
