“It was meant to be for your birthday, but I didn't get it done in time… obviously.” he tacks on at the end.

Just like how crochet was meant to be a hobby, a relaxing one at that, but all Steve’s been is stressed about trying to make something for Eddie’s birthday… then about how it was late… and then about how the vision he had of it in his head was nothing like how it was coming out.

The thing was horrid. Absolutely wretched. Steve had no clue why he was even still giving it to Eddie, newfound crush on the long-haired dork besides the point.

Eddie just stares at it. The sad lump of yarn Steve dared to call a sweater.

“You can— Look, I’ll just take it out back and put it out of its misery.” Steve grimaces, reaching for the Thing with one hand and gesturing back toward the backyard where the fire in Hopper’s fire pit was still steadily blazing.

Eddie unfreezes and snatches It out of reach, “Fuck off with that, I’m gonna wear this sweater every damn day.” Then, as if to prove his point, tries to put it on over his already bulky hoodie/leather jacket/battle vest (a new one, since his old one was lost somewhere in the aftermath of Spring Break) combo.

“Waitwaitwaitwait—“ Steve hurries to pull Eddie's arms back down, “It barely fit me when I tried it on, you’ll end up ripping it if you try putting it on over all that.”

Eddie lowers his arms, squinting suspiciously at Steve as he does. Steve rolls his eyes. “I’m not going to take it back if you really want it that damn much.”

“Yeah you better not.” Eddie sniffs, folding the sweater up then shoving it safely under his hoodie. Steve barely has enough time to think about the implications of that, about how scratchy that must be, let alone voice how that ugly lump of granny stitches is going to end up on the ground if it stays there, before Eddie is pulling him in for a hug.

“Thanks Stevie,”

Steve lets out a sigh, and wraps his arms around Eddie’s waist. “You’re welcome Eddie.”

Even with how ungodly lumpy and disfigured the crochet sweater was, Steve was still bummed he didn’t see Eddie wearing it the next time he saw him. Or the next time. Or the third.

One week after the Hopper Halloween Hbonfire, when Steve is feeling particularly mopey and planning on tossing all his crochet hooks when he got home from work that night, Eddie waltzes into Family Video an hour before close… still sans sweater.

Kicking himself for having so many big feelings about a sweater that no one should be caught dead in, he manages a smile. “Hey Eddie, what’s up?”

He leans onto the counter in front of Eddie, feeling his face tingle slightly when the other man does the same, his face coming in close to Steve’s.

Thank god it’s nearly midnight.

”Nothin’ much Stevie Darling,” Eddie grins, “What’s going on with you? You seem a little bummed.”

Steve opens his mouth to reply, say something random that has nothing to do with the sweater (or lack thereof), when his eyes flick briefly down to Eddie’s torso.

”Just ready to go home, I guess.”

Eddie grins wider, his eyes crinkle up at the corners. God, if Steve hadn’t already been head over heels..

”You sure, big boy? Sure it’s got nothing to do with the lack of lovingly twisted yarn upon my person?”

“… Well yeah. But did you have to say it like that?”

Eddie laughs, his eyes sparkling. “I knew it, “You don’t have to wear it..” my ass.”

Steve sighs, hangs his head momentarily, then picks it back up to meet Eddie’s mischievous eyes. “At least it’ll bring some color to the dump.”

There’s a moment’s pause, then Eddie says, “I didn’t throw it out.” In a tone that implies that should’ve been obvious.

”Well I haven’t seen you wearing it.” Steve grumbles, then kicks himself internally again. “Wait, sorry, forget I said anything.”

He stands straight, nervously running a hand through his hair. Eddie looks up at him from his spot at the counter for a breath, then stands up to meet Steve’s gaze.

”I didn’t throw it out.” he repeats, firmer this time.

”That’s good, I guess, not up to me what you do with it, right?”

”Well, I did try it as a sweater first.”

”…It fell apart, didn’t it?”

”It did indeed.”

Steve huffs another sigh, this one resigned. “I’m already planning on throwing away all my hooks,” he laughs. It comes out strained. “No need to inflict my piss poor crochet on other people, right?”

Eddie smirks, “I wouldn't do that if I were you.” Eddie smirks, then fixes Steve with a look, “And don’t piss on the poor, Steve, we don’t like it very much.”

Steve snorts out a laugh, and Eddie continues. “The boys saw your work and would really appreciate some of their own for Christmas,” He reaches forward and takes both Steve’s hands in his. "If you’d be so kind as to put those beautiful hands of yours to work again.”

Steve wants to laugh at the gesture, initially, but there’s something serious in Eddie’s face.

”You’re— you’re serious? The first thing I crochet falls apart as soon as you try to put it on, and you want me to make more for your friends.. Is this some kind of prank you’re trying to pull on them? Because I’d be all in with you normally, but that just seems like you’re making fun of m—“

The gentle press of a finger to his lips cuts off his rant.

”You gonna let me explain, sweetheart?”

Steve nods, and for a moment, feeling like someone stuffed his head with yarn.

Eddie takes his finger away, and his hands too, Steve clenches his own at his sides to keep from reaching back for Eddie’s.

”Yes, most of the sweater you so lovingly crafted for me did, in fact, fall all the way apart BUT!” he emphasizes, holding up a finger to stop Steve from saying the nothing he was going to. “Some of it did not.”

Before Steve can ask what survived, Eddie spins on his heel and holds his arms out.

The back panel of his vest, the spot that big Dio patch had been on the old one, had been cut away completely. 

Two squares of Eddie’s sweater have been stitched into the space.

Steve even recognizes them, two of the last granny squares he’d done for the right sleeve, one blue and green, and one red and black.

He reaches out to poke at the center of the bottom one, not believing what he’s seeing, but no. They’ve been stretched a bit to fit correctly, but they’re there.

Eddie turns back around to face him, and gone is the cool calm he’d been holding to since walking into the store. Instead, he looks a little wary, like Steve’s going to be mad at him for doing this.

”You— Ed— Wh—“ Steve looks around the store, empty. Has been for the last two hours too. “You know what-“ 

Steve spins around, flicks the lights off, hops the counter, locks the door and flips the sign, then is grabbing hold of Eddie and pulling him across the store to Keith's office.

He tucks Eddie into the small space, closes the door, and leans back against it for good measure.

Somehow, Eddie’s taken this worse. He stands with his back to the dingy filing cabinet and picks absently at a nail while he watches Steve with all the wariness of a feral cat.

And that just won’t do.

Steve surges forward and catches Eddie’s face in his hands, kissing him soundly. Purposefully. 

He pulls back before Eddie can react.

”I can’t believe you did that to your vest.” he kisses him again, this time Eddie’s ready for it.

Steve pulls back again, Eddie cuts in with “I can’t believe you tried making me a sweater.” before Steve can say anything.

Eddie pulls him in this time, and Steve pulls back almost immediately, “Hey, I did make you a sweater. It’s not my fault it fell apart.”

Eddie just laughs and pulls him in again.

SLS/N's POV

It was finally Saturday: Girls day! Maddi and I have had plans made to go to the mall forever ago, and the day has finally come!

I curl my hair and throw some makeup on, adding a little more highlighter than normal, then get changed. Feeling myself, I throw on a purple crochet bralette and a pair of short ripped jean shorts.

after spraying some perfume, I grab my phone and wallet, then walk downstairs.

I walk into the kitchen to grab a bagel. after spreading some cream cheese on it, I walk into the living room and sit next to all three of my brothers while I wait for Maddi to come and pick me up.

As I sat down, the conversation my brothers were having immediately stopped, and they all stared at me.

"What?" I asked, holding my bagel up as I talked with my mouth full.

'Where in the hell do you think you're going looking like that?" Chris said.

I looked down at my outfit, checking to see if it matched. It did. I had no stains on anything, my hair was curled, and I made sure my makeup was perfect. What was wrong?

I gave them a questioning look, swallowing my last bite of bagel.

"I mean, for starters, there's more skin showing than actual clothing," Matt says, looking me up and down judgmentally.

I roll my eyes, sitting back on the couch. I pull out my phone and begin scrolling. They're so overprotective.

"SLS/N...we're serious. Go change." Nick says, sternly.

I look up at him, flabbergasted. I can not believe Nick, of all people, is about to make me change. My mouth is hanging open.

"But-" I begin to say.

"Now!" Nick says, not yelling but he raises his voice.

I sigh, standing up and heading back to my room to change again.

Just to mess with them, I put on black cargo pants, a hoodie, and a black puffer vest. In the upper 90-degree weather of California, this fit was not acceptable, but I was feeling like messing with my brothers.

Before I even sit down, Matt says,

"Don't be a dumb ass. Go change." He doesn't even look up from his phone as he's talking to me. I storm back up the stairs, into my room.

After tearing apart my entire closet to find an outfit, I find nothing. Just as I lay down on my bed in frustration, my door opens, revealing Nick.

I give him the side eye, still upset with him. he walks over to my desk, grabs a makeup wipe, and walks back over to me, kneeling in front of me.

He gently takes the makeup wipe across my face, wiping off the excess highlighter on my face. I let him, not wanting to fight with him anymore.

Once finished, he walks back to my closet. He pulls out a pair of summer cargo jeans and a baby tee. he tosses them to me and I get dressed as he goes to my vanity, picking out a pair of sunglasses and gold hoop earrings.

once I'm done getting dressed, Nick walks me back downstairs into the living room. Matt and Chris hoot and holler, clapping their hands.

"That's more like my baby sis." Chris says, giving me a twirl.

Weapon: He doesn't really like fighting, just tends to run away when he gets into that kind of trouble, but if it gets to it he'll try to punch his way out of it (with varying degrees of success).

Food: Fried chicken nuggets, but he also adores pizza

Drink: Ice Cream Milkshake

Style: A simple, slightly lazy style, where he just picks the nearest hoodie from his vast collection, slips on some denim jeans or sweatpants, plus a T-shirt and socks.

I thought about what modern DPS would wear so you don't have to.

Todd - He loves zip-up hoodies and khakis. He definitely buys white shoes to paint them.

Neil - Everyone has sort of come to an agreement that Neil is obbssesed with sweaters and I'm not about to disagree. Neil, his sweater collection, and a crocheted beanie against the world.

Meeks - He would wear a big flannel over a t-shirt, and his t-shirt is tucked into high waisted jeans. He carries a messenger bag everywhere.

Knox - He wears hoodies and basketball shorts everywhere. He probably shops at Dick's Sporting Goods.

Pitts - I am a firm believer in Pitts wearing tank tops. Also the only shoes he owns are crocs.

Charlie - This man dresses to impress. He wears sweater vests over collared shirts with tons of rings and necklaces. He's never seen without his Doc Martins. He also wears this specific outfit a lot.

tbh the whole “take a deep breath” thing never worked for me when i get frustrated, or at least not effectively enough to make a difference. This is a big issue in school because i will get angry if someone doesn’t say something in the right way. i know it’s Not Good to have that reaction and im decent at not blowing up on people, but it’s still extremely uncomfortable to feel like that. so in comes my genius solution.

i’ve got a little rat plushie, small enough to fit in my pocket. It’s a bit more delicate-feeling than my other rat plushies, doesn’t weigh as much and has finer fur and all that. i keep it in my hoodie with my crocheted hankie i fidget with, and whenever i start getting mad, i touch the rat.

might partially be a sensory thing, since i like the rat’s texture, but i also think it’s like a reminder that there are reasons to persevere through frustrating situations and such. so i’ve decided im going to make a little service animal vest for my rat, complete with a name tag and phone number in case i lose him.

it’s absolutely considered childish by the general population to carry a stuffed animal with you, but if the alternative is unbridled blind rage, i’d rather be seen as immature.

Webby’s house is unnaturally still when it’s only RC in it. Never still as in unmoving; objects shift and fall and the lost pile and holes only continue to grow and change. Rather time has slowed to a crawl. It hasn’t literally, the time on RC’s phone says otherwise. But yet it still seems to lag behind, their perception warped of exactly how much time was passing.

It’s like still water. Everything looks normal on the surface, except there’s something uncannily wrong that escapes easy description.

But RC is appreciative to have a roof over their head. They’ve long taken off their combat gear and shifted into looser and less constraining clothing. Hoodies, cargo pants, comfortable clothing. The bullet proof vest they’d bought is hanging up on the back of a chair, and the gun had been unloaded, cleaned of dust, and stowed away. Rations are spread over the kitchen counter, a visual so RC could see exactly how much remained. Along with it was their daily medication and “as needed” pills. Notes and papers similarly are spread out on the living room floor, though they’d had to take frequent breaks from all the dead ends.

It hadn’t all been losses though. There had been some progress.

Most importantly, they keep reminding themselves that they’re appreciative. They’re better off here, wherever here is, than storming Showfall with little resources and even less knowledge. They need to trust their ally. They need to trust Webby.

“if you're sure you fuckin' trust me, alright”

Webby hadn’t even seemed sure it was a good idea. Disbelief, confusion perhaps. But it was really all RC had.

A tug of guilt flooded their cheeks. Searching around the house feels like a thing of distrust, like they’re betraying that which they’d been given. But then again, Webby had left no instructions to not to. Only not to mess with the holes. They could at least follow that.

Without anymore hesitation, finally, finally, RC was leaving the living room they’d practically camped in for the past weeks. They’d made short trips to the bathroom down the hall, but hadn’t gone further. They hadn’t needed to. But now they feel the tug of boredom and itchy restlessness from being cooped up too long.

The hallway is narrow, and reflexively they walk to the edge of the wall, all their weight closest to the wall and floor joint. The carpet is orange, the fibres long, and something out of the seventies. Quite frankly it’s ugly as sin. They’re glad they’re wearing socks at least to muffle the texture.

Down the hallway is dim, and not very long. A door is on each side, and RC already knows one of them is the bathroom. Between them, dangles a cord to what looks like an attic hatch. While they know what the one door is, hey haven’t explored the other yet. It is pretty, with an antiquated glass doorknob and brass base. They haven’t seen a doorknob like it in years really; it was more of something out of an old historic home.

When their hand runs over the surface, it’s cool to the touch. The glass has been cut and shaped, and it vaguely reminds RC of a diamond. They can’t help but wonder how light would look reflected from it. They tighten their grip, and gently turn the knob.

The door is partially jammed by the shag carpeting in the hall. It takes a gentle heave with their shoulder, and it swings open, revealing a plain room.

There’s a bed, neatly made with a sheet of dust over it. A window to outside lets in light, and the doily curtains shimmer softly as if someone had sprinkled glitter over them. A lamp is in the corner, and tucked way back is a small desk and dresser. It looks like a simple guest room, though an unused and untouched one for countless years.

RC can’t help but step closer into the room, hands moving to the curtains. They squint a little, the threads are so fine they seem to be made of silk. It isn’t until they fully swiped their hand over the fluttering fabric that they realize it is silk. What RC had taken as crocheted fabric or woven lace was in fact spun of something else entirely.

Spider webs. In the most intricate designs.

They’ve never seen anything like it and before they can damage it, they pull their hands back. It’s beautiful and catches the light just so. Questions flood their mind.

Did Webby make this? Who else would have? Maybe Athena?

After all, it’s said that the first spider was a weaver Athena cursed. It wouldn’t be completely out of the realm of possibility.

They take a step back. This room is nice. Not what they expected, but a pleasant surprise. Even yet it seems too delicate to touch and in a way, special. RC doesn’t want to disturb it further. Their hand closes on the doorknob, and with one final look back, they close the door.

Next, the rope dangling from the ceiling at the end of the hallway. They suspect it’s a trapdoor that leads to an attic, but from how the house looked on the outside, they can’t be sure there’d even be enough room for another floor.

“It’s most likely just a small storage space,” they tell themselves. Their fingers stretch and can barely reach the frayed rope.

The second they pull, they have to jump out of the way as dust falls, and a weird folding staircase clatters down. It nearly hits them, only their reflexes saving them this time. As they stand, a litany of curses fall from their lips.

It wouldn’t be Webby’s house if it didn’t try to kill them at least once. Determined yet, they step onto the first rung. It holds their weight. As does the second. The third however doesn’t.

The tumble to the floor isn’t far but it fucking hurts. Another drop of swears before they look up and see the rung perfectly fine. It’s not snapped. It looks intact, just as the others. And yet RC could swear it had given out underneath them. Another frown and they try again.

The first rung is fine. The second one is fine. This time as they step onto the third, they watch carefully, looking down at their feet. The second their foot hits the third rung, all the rungs flip, inverting as if the stairway is now a slide. Expectedly, RC can’t hang on, hands slipping and while strong, unable to carry their full weight.

This time when they land on their butt, a muffled thunk accompanies it as they hit the floor. At least it was carpeted floor. Ugly as it was, the shag was coming in handy.

“Motherfucking slide stairs. I swear to god, Webby,” they bite out as they stumble back up to a stand.

They can imagine him watching and laughing at them. But if he was here, they would know it, RC supposes. Webby isn’t exactly the quietest spectator.

They try again, breath held this time as they skip the third stair. The fourth stair creaks, old grey wood trembling under their weight, but to their relief it holds. The next stair? Back to the slide and to the bottom.

It takes RC a frustratingly long time to get up the stairs. Each one has to be plotted and tested and it’s only by trial and error they can figure out which ones hit the magical “turn stairs into slide” button. It’s like something out of a ridiculous cartoon or spy movie.

They don’t bother testing the last two stairs, instead just ungracefully hauling themselves up and skipping them. They don’t want to fall from this high, and don’t exactly have anymore patience for the shenanigans of the staircase.

The attic is dark, though there’s a beautiful stained window in the shape and cut of a spiderweb which lets in some muted light. This room, unlike the other is lived in. The bed is ruffled, and large, taking up most the room. Various objects are strewn about, even a shirt or two. No dust, so either the room constantly shifts and dust can never build up, or it’s simply well taken care of. However it’s presumably Webby’s room, and he hasn’t been seen since he dropped RC there. Despite the oddness of it, they would bet it’s the first option.

They don’t snoop. Or at least, they don’t want to. As much as they’re tempted, they don’t look in the drawers. This is very likely Webby’s space. Really they should just head back down the stairs and leave well enough alone. House explored.

Yet against the furthest wall, there’s a door. It stands out. As if unfinished and not belonging, completely throwing off the look of the room.

Their feet move them to it robotically, as if they’re not really in control of their own body. The handle is old, a weathered letter on it that RC can’t exactly make out. A “M” maybe? Or a “N”? They can’t be sure, even as their fingers trace over the raised letter. Once more their fingers tighten on another doorknob.

It opens outwardly, towards RC, oddly enough. Most doors open inward to the room you’re entering, but this one is the opposite. Unease prickles their neck, as if a whispered warning. They continue and carefully peak in the room.

It’s barren. The only item inside is a bucket in the corner. No dust, no furniture, no window. Just, a single grey, metal bucket standing forlornly in the back, left corner.

I need! To focus!

So it turns out, I did not so good job while casting on, because turns out I cast on the same amount for 2 halves of the front. Where one has the raglan "seam" stitches and the other doesn't. So I'll need to remember to NOT add another increase in it specifically on the 2 WS rows after I start doing increases each row

But also I'm really starting to think about crocheting a mandala cardigan. One of those that are like. Round tablecloths with sleeves. Maybe I'll even figure out how to add back-and-forth rows on top to make it have a hood

But the problem is the yarn. Because the one I have and was thinking of using is pretty thin. Like 2.5mm hook thin. And the mandala cardigan and vest patterns I've seen are all for yarn that needs a 4mm hook (maybe 4.5mm for me). And I'm not comfortable enough with crochet to know how to stretch those patterns...

Anyways, today I'm for sure entering the Increase Every Row territory on the Apple Green Hoodie. Will it be faster thanks to the Doing Something In WS Rows? Who knows. I can just tell that the amount of stitches is going to balloon! Given that only 36 rows are with increase every second row, I'm left with 54 rows of straight up increases
