Also, if I were able to make gifs, this is the moment I’ve been longing to make a gifset for.  One of those ones where the “past” scene is in black-and-white and then there’s a corresponding “present” scene in color?  And all the “past” scenes are from this conversation about Molly’s backstory.  Laid out like this:
First row, Caleb - “Why do you have so many names?” // “I used a lot of names.” (ep. 52, A Game of Names)
Second row, Nott - “Were you dead?” “Obviously not.” // “Was he right? Did you... die?” “I think so.” (ep. 52, A Game of Names)
Third row, Beau - “You ever think you could actually be doing damage, though?  Setting people on false paths?  [...] Some people are vulnerable and looking for answers. // “He built his entire fucking life around this fortune teller, around a fucking tarot deck, basically.” (ep. 92, Home is Where the Heart Is)
Fourth row, Fjord - “So it’s you that’s special, not your swords.” “That’s true.”// “You need me more than I need you.  [...]  I pull the blade back... and throw it.” (ep. 72, Clay and Dust)

Oh exactly this. I was feeling this so hard. And seeing Beau so emotional, just at her wits’ end with how to handle his bullshit and her own feelings... it made me ANGRY, man.
I want to see this guy realise and accept just how much he’s hurt Beau and everyone around him; I want him to genuinely apologise to her; and I want him to do ACTUAL penance, whatever that may look like. Then and only then will I countenance anyone treating him as a half-decent individual.
Oh okay I figured out what was bothering me about the way Thoreau acted here. It's that he acted so calm and seemingly reasonable and rational. Like I went into this wanting to be so angry at him and then he took that away and defused it by presenting his position in a way that looked logical and rational even as he equated his immense failures as a parent to Beau's actions as a child looking for parental support and guidance.
Beau's mom, I was able to be irritated at because she was awkward, and stumbling, and in that there was an acknowledgement that wrong had been done to Beau and the blame was on the parents, and the implication that that knowledge is difficult to deal with for her. With Thoreau, though, he acted as though any wrongs he had committed were so far past that their impact should be by default accepted as naught, and that Beau bears an equal responsibility, and he presented his arguments in a rational, calm manner without stumbling or guilt.
And because he is acting like he as justified and blameless, it makes him seem justified and blameless even though he is so clearly not. And it's frustrating because I want so badly for Beau to be able to tear into him but he managed to dance around everything so smoothly and to tie her flaws in with his so tightly that it seems like she can't lash out at him without admitting fault herself, so she just has to go with it because angrily yelling at someone so calm and collected can only make you look like the irrational one in the end.
