no because the reason why Kai is so compelling as a character IS because she's one among many. She's not a protagonist- her whole life has been shaped by so so so many hands. There are so many people ready to help her up if she falls- and not in a 'ugh she's our responsibility now I GUESS, she can tag along with us' way Crisa and gang have been treating her- but more in a 'hey c'mon let's talk about it over dinner/another sad song on the piano? What's up?/yeah I gave you three dummies today and the sharpest sword you made, go at it' kind of way her people would have.
She was a victim of her circumstances, sure, and got pulled into dangerous situations and stupid decisions. But she fully deserved a second chance just like so many other not-so-savory characters. It was so painfully obvious that the antagonists were using her and I'm gonna be very honest, her ending was OOC. She deserved to be back with her family at the very least.

Hey since you like Blasphemous, do you like other Metroidvanias? And if so, which is your favourite in the genre?
I do! I haven't played a few really great ones, but I've enjoyed Hollow Knight, Super Metroid, SotN- all the major ones! I think I wanna say it's a bit of a toss up between the blasphemous games?
The first ones combat is so weighty and there's so many fantastic bosses. Crisanta is one of my favorite boss fights in all of gaming. The pixel art and cutscenes are some of the best you'll ever see and the lore is top notch.
The second one makes the movement abilities you need to get a bit more sensical (one has some requisite abilities behind some odd stuff) and the three weapons are all really fun. That they give you a choice of the three weapons and each has it's own movement ability built in allowing you access to certain areas right away is great. You can even rush the other two weapons and get the double jump right off the bat! The immediate freedom of exploration is top notch, and it's got some solid to great bosses. Although, nothing on Crisanta's level.

Starting my reread of game of thrones and all I can say is I adore how Brienne and Jaime's dynamic of redemption perfectly mirrors Crisanta and the Penitent One's, down to the tall strong lady knight and her shortking boyfriend archetypes

Review: Crisanta Knight: The Severance Game by Geanna Culbertson
Tumblr media
on goodreads
A lot of questions ran through my head as I desperately clung to the roof of a magic train crossing over a gaping canyon. Like: How did I get here? What could I have done to avoid this fate? And, did I remember to shave my underarms before coming on this quest? But even after taking on a witch in a gingerbread house, bloodthirsty actors, and a whole mess of magic hunters and other fairytale shenanigans, the biggest, most pressing question pulsing through my brain as my fingers started to slip and my enemy bore down on me was this: Could I really trust the person whose life I’d ruined to keep me from falling?
I have kindly received a copy of this book from Boutique of Quality Books Publishing via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
My review under the cut!
genre: fantasy, YA, fairytales, retelling, adventure
My review
Crisanta Knight is back! :)
Imagine a world of Book, where a mysterious author decides whether you'll be a protagonist, an antagonist, a hero, a princess. Crisanta Knight, the daughter of Cinderella and Prince Charming doesn't want to be just a damsel in distress and decides to re-write her story. In order to do that, she embarks on a dangerous journey with four of her friends.
The second book picks up right where the first one ended, and we still read about our characters trying to fight against their prophecy, but this time the author also touched upon the theme of trust - trusting oneself and trusting other people. Once again, Crisanta is a strong and ambitious character, who would do anything to change her destiny and have control over her life but also, her character became more complex as she fought with her inner instincts and uncertainty whether she can trust everyone around her. She's determined to prove everyone that despite what people think about her and the archetype she should conform to, she's capable of so much more and I admire her for it. I also really enjoyed seeing her character development, as Crisa had to understand what she really feels and allow other people in. It was good to see that other characters went through some growth as well.
As in the first book, the worldbuilding continues to be amazing. In this installment we see a lot more of the fairytale lands and I also felt like there was more action. We visited more magical realms, the magic train, our "human" world, where we met a lot of fantastic creatures and generally learned more about the worlds created by the author. I especially loved the little nod to the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. I feel like the pace was much faster, our characters had more fun adventures and the story was really enjoyable and easy to follow. I began to get used to Crisa's long inner monologues and accepted it as her character trait, and the flashbacks/visions introduced to the story made everything even more interesting. I liked it that some of the storylines from previous book were tied up, and we got new questions that are waiting for answers.
Overall, I think that Crisanta Knight series is a really original and fun series for all those who love fairytales and would want an interesting, fresh retelling. The Severance Game was a truly good, engaging continuation of the story and I can't wait to see what happens next! :)
My rating: 4.5

Okay but is it really a fuckin surprise that I ended up shipping Crisa and Kai after my fifth reread of the series tho. Is it?? really?!??
those two literally have dymanics that make me - forget weak at the knees - straight up collapse like someone stole my kneecaps, like:
- being narrative foils to e/o (they're THEMATIC, bitches)
- hero x villain
- jealousy.... or longing? (have you SEEN the way little miss protagonist describes Kai?)
- hero corruption arc
- dramatic vision/prophecy of only the two of them
- choosing to partially destroy a city just to save the other (cackling. for whose sake crisa. FOR WHOSE SAKE GIRL.)
- Crisa wanting to be actual friends with Kai so bad that it showed up in her Sweet Dreams storyline
- THE BETRAYAL. DRAMA. ANGST.
- the storyline giving redemption arcs to several unsavory characters (but not Kai bc fuck her i guess? It could've been tho. It SHOULD'VE been)
- Kai being rightfully angry about everything that was going on so she gets to be a little selfish. As a treat
Anyway is it any wonder that with this base my mind didn't run away into canon fix-it mode? And specifically put these two together??
I don't think so.

So I was messing around with Picrews again today and I found the PERFECT one to illustrate a scene from Crisanta Knight:
Tumblr media
Inside I found a picture of a girl. She was about our age with long, wavy black hair. Her eyes were a rich brown and her smile was mischievous. She was pretty, beautiful really. But I had no idea what her picture was doing inside of Daniel's watch.
.... as opposed to Crisa's own watch?? lol XD
Anyway. You can understand how excited I was to find this picrew, especially since I don't have my tablet to actually draw my favorite scenes.
This almost perfectly captures how I imagine Kai in the series. The only slight difference is that she looks like an adult here rather than a teen, bc there wasn't any options to make a rounder/chubbier face.
Here's the picture in full: (SCREAMING bc LOOK HOW PRETTY,,;;;)

no bc I remembered that queer readings are actually a thing and what if- WHAT IF- I DID A QUEER READING OF CRISANTA KNIGHT.
like.
It's literally the perfect series for a qr.
Friendships coming first? check.
friends to lovers arc (aka their friendship would absolutely survive a breakup- my bi heart is screaming)
possible comphet b/w Kai and Daniel? (closteted Kai latching onto him as her bf bc he was the only option and getting mad protective about it)
SJ never getting a love interest - aro/ace vibes
You know what, neither did Mauvrey
And on second thought... there's definitely some gender fuckery going on with Blue.
YO. There's literally so much to go off of!!

Rereading Crisanta Knight from the beginning and god, the whiplash I'm getting from Crisa and Daniel. It's just. So weird, seeing her refusing to call him a friend, keeping him in a literal separate category whenever she mentions her friends and refusing to accept his help (or anyone's for that matter, her character still needed alot of development at this point). It's so weird. And so interesting, because it shows me how much they grew since then.
also book 8 when
