The Culture Industry (Mavis Ang)
In “The Culture Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception”, Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno asserted that culture is increasingly commodified. They raised examples in film and radio, arguing for a sense of “sameness” across cultural products. They go on to caution against the skewed power relations - “that the basis on which technology is gaining power over society is the power of those whose economic position in society is strongest”. In addition, they gave the example of telephone to radio where the participant is forced to become a passive receiver. They were also quick to claim that many culture products such as hit songs and film follow a sort of “schema” and the specificities which set them apart are ultimately, “interchangeable”.
Evidently, this sense of “uniformity” can be seen with the plentiful categories and genres displayed on applications such as Netflix, YouTube and Spotify. The wide (yet limited) variety of keywords and tags demonstrate a false sense of choice. With similar structures (or templates-ish) existing across platforms, there is definitely a possibility that we are trapped within the provided confines. It might be difficult to consider or even have as easy access to say other forms of art or performances that are not constantly in your recommendations. These art forms or productions could also be less glorified or discussed due to its supposed lower economic value.
Although there is definitely some truth to these arguments, it might be overly simplistic and pessimistic to argue as such. While the authors argued for the industrialisation of culture (and its potential to breed conformity and to a further extent, limit autonomy), there is also a need to consider the changing dynamics in today’s context. In “Media Industries, Work and Life”, Deuze too recognized that the contemporary media culture is increasingly participatory and interactive. Sites such as Medium, Reddit and YouTube thrive on user generated content. This blurs the distinction between the producer and the consumer. These sites also facilitate online discussions beyond the cultural product.

As an avid consumer of Netflix, I frequently browse through Reddit threads (such as https://www.reddit.com/r/CriminalNetflix/comments/ity6jh/criminal_uk_2x02_alex_episode_discussion/ ) seeking to continue the discussion on a certain episode or series. I believe there are many others who are keen on expanding the discussion by contributing their thoughts and opinions as well. Therefore, I think the issue on whether we are becoming an increasingly passive and submissive audience is highly debatable.
Furthermore, I find it a bit of a stretch to label minor variations of cultural products as “interchangeable”. I find it acceptable that many works or productions can be inspired by other elements in other works. Ultimately, these products are subjected to individual interpretations and I would like to believe that the audiences (be it as consumers or producers) are also a discerning bunch. Since interpretations are highly subjective and nuanced, I think it is also problematic to dismiss cultural products as homogeneous. While I do agree that there is a need to consider the commodification of culture and the power relations between the producer and the consumer, there is a need to be contextually aware as well. Therefore, the discussion on The Culture Industry should be expanded on while acknowledging that the notion of the consumer and the producer is becoming increasingly complex and the converging relations between both.
