Wearing a blue America First cap, 19-year-old Max White stood among a dozen protesters, softly mouthing the Hail Mary prayers over and over: “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.”

Around White flew the flags of right-wing extremist groups, including the American Nationalist Initiative and the New Columbia Movement, carried by men who looked to be in their 20s, strapped with rosaries or assault rifles or both. On a cloudless January day in Dallas, they faced off against a group of nearly 100 community members who showed up to support the drag show performance that White and his peers were protesting.

“I started going to these events last year, starting with the Pride event in Oak Lawn. … I was like, ‘If these people are going to go and protest this kind of stuff, just perverse sexual stuff for kids, I’m going,’” he said.

Since he was 16, White has been following young white-supremacist agitator Nick Fuentes and groups like Protect Texas Kids, which has been targeting drag shows in North Texas, including the one that day in Dallas. The organization was founded and is directed by recent college graduate Kelly Neidert, who achieved notoriety by calling for transgender people to be criminalized and Pride event participants to be “rounded up” while she was the chapter chair of the Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) at the University of North Texas in Denton. Now she is using the activism skills she learned from YCT to lead other young conservatives like White, a freshman political science major who hopes to become a lawyer one day.

“You have all these groups that are weaponizing young people in ways that we really haven’t seen before,” conservative political consultant Micah Bock told a group of teenagers and younger children to thunderous applause at last fall’s Texas Youth Summit. As he spoke, young girls at the front of the crowd took notes with their pom-pom pens bobbing.

It’s all part of a nationwide effort by multiple well-funded groups, many of which originated or are based in Texas, to mobilize young people, mainly Christian youth, to engage in right-wing politics. These groups and their leaders are part of a roll-call of Christian nationalist power players who defend the January 6 riots, promote hate speech, and aim to build their economic and political power by instilling Christian and constitutional “originalism” in the public sphere. To achieve their goals, they are increasingly defending the use of violence, particularly anti-LGBTQ+ violence, which has shot up in frequency since the start of 2022.

What’s more, the leaders of the movement are set on convincing young people, starting even before high school, that they are the underdogs in this fight—the under-funded rebels fighting a rich, powerful leftist establishment–and that what they’re engaged in is a holy war for America’s soul.

The movement is meeting opposition from more progressive Christian leaders.

“What I think they really are concerned about is their loss of a privileged place in terms of influence and power. I think Christian nationalism is being used as a tool to maintain and to galvanize that power,” said Fort Worth Pastor Michael Mills, an outspoken critic of that movement.

“It feels a little bit like a form of indoctrination [in which] these poisonous ideas are passed from one generation to the next,” he said. “If there are no checks on that, it’s almost like, [as] each generation gets older, they get more and more dangerous, in a sense. And that’s the scary part.”

Oprah’s Dr. Phil debases himself in the very city that made him a star

We’ve no problem with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement doing its job and deporting violent criminals and those guilty of sex offenses involving minors, among other serious matters.

We’ve no wish for immigration agents to do so in secrecy, either.

But here in America, we don’t have show trials nor do we ritualistically lambaste such people in service of political power or television ratings.

Unlike some nations, we don’t hang, beat or interrogate people in the public square, either.

Why not? It debases everyone. America takes a higher path.

Or took.

We were astonished to see Phil McGraw, a man who uses a sobriquet that includes the word “doctor,” embedding himself with ICE, a questionable move in and of itself for a person who has claimed to heal, and then literally shining a spotlight on a Thai national who was rounded up by ICE on Sunday in Chicago.

Dr. Phil’s quarry told him he recognized him from TV and then took part, consciously or not, in his own ritual humiliation for a hungry TV audience.

Let’s be clear here.

The man reportedly was a convicted sex offender and internet predator, and we want him gone.

We understand the propaganda value, too, for a Trump administration that wants to confirm the president’s point that there are bad people in this city and state without legal authorization.

True.

And there are bad people with legal authorization too.

Either way, there was something profoundly unsettling about a man who found fame and a huge fortune in our city on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” a man who made his bones by offering advice to often vulnerable guests as a psychotherapist would, someone who set himself up as an avuncular healer, telling people how to nurture their relationship with their spouse or cope after a relationship has fallen apart.

Dr. Phil had many followers, and much of his advice, although sometimes controversial, had a certain commonsense appeal.

We may even have listened occasionally ourselves.

Dr. Phil now is pushing a new prime-time show on his Texas-based network Merit Street Media.

And he apparently believes his audience is well served by the former TV healer standing next to the feds and questioning a target without a lawyer at his side.

We get why Donald Trump’s Department of Justice wants him there:

It implies that such people won’t just be removed;

they’ll be humiliated at the same time.

Given the abhorrent nature of the Thai national’s crimes, it’s easy to say that’s all fine.

Take all the licks you want, Dr. Phil.

But it’s not.

The Taliban do not roam the streets of Chicago, and their modus operandi should not be applied here.

We think that somewhere deep in his memory from “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” Dr. Phil knows that too.

Dr. Phil rides with ICE during operation

TV host says agents ‘not sweeping neighborhoods’

The TV host known as Dr. Phil embedded with U.S. immigration enforcement officers during an operation in Chicago on Sunday, defending President Donald Trump’s deportation effort as the crackdown neared the end of its first week.

Phil McGraw, who owns a TV network based in Fort Worth, followed Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and other federal agents during the action, according to his X account.

McGraw, who spoke at a Trump campaign event in October, said in a post on X on Sunday that ICE aimed to pick 270 “high-value targets,” indicating it was a targeted operation.

“They’re not sweeping neighborhoods like people are trying to imply,” he said.

Video posted on McGraw’s X account shows the television host and White House “border czar” Tom Homan questioning a detained man who says he was born in Thailand.

The man in the video says he is not a citizen.

Trump took steps to launch a wide-ranging immigration crackdown after taking office Jan. 20, sending U.S. troops to the border and empowering immigration agents to pick up more non-criminals.

The Trump administration last week deputized law enforcement agents with several Justice Department agencies to conduct immigration enforcement to supplement ICE efforts.

ICE made 956 arrests nationwide on Sunday, the agency said on X, three times the daily average for arrests in fiscal 2024.

‘You’re Dr. Phil’

TV personality says he joined immigration raids in Chicago for sake of ‘transparency’

Partway through answering questions Sunday during an immigration enforcement blitz in Chicago, a man who appeared to be in federal custody briefly stopped talking when he recognized the man with the Texas accent asking the questions.

“You’re Dr. Phil,” the man said to television personality Phil McGraw, who, while standing alongside federal agents, peppered the man with questions about his citizenship and alleged crimes.

The scene played out not only in Chicago but across the internet Sunday as McGraw and cameras from his Merit TV media platform were embedded with President Donald Trump’s “border czar” Tom Homan and others from various federal agencies as they began their long-promised immigration action in and around the city this past weekend.

Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials did not respond to questions Monday about McGraw’s presence during the enforcement actions or the specifics of interactions with suspects that were disseminated on his platform and social media accounts.

But in an interview with Tribune, McGraw, who spoke at a Trump rally just before last year’s election, said he was in Chicago to provide “transparency” for “a very targeted, surgical operation” aimed at people with criminal records who are in the country without legal authorization.

“Transparency is going to be important for people to understand what’s going on and what’s not going on,” McGraw said.

“I’ve read a lot of things about sweeping neighborhoods and raiding businesses and even schools and things like that. That is just absolutely untrue. That’s not going on.”

For many others, however, granting largely unrestricted access to a well-known television personality during high-stakes law enforcement encounters raises questions about the propriety of the operation.

It also underscores the extent to which Trump — who parlayed his turn as a reality TV star into a political career powered by harsh rhetoric on illegal immigration — relies on spectacle and showmanship to convey his message.

Further blurring of the lines between politics and popular media is likely to be a hallmark of the second Trump administration, as evidenced by his cabinet appointments of former Fox News personalities such as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Sean Duffy, a former Wisconsin congressman and star of MTV’s “The Real World” tapped to lead the Department of Transportation.

Longtime Chicago immigration attorney Kevin Raica said he was surprised to see McGraw tagging along with federal officials during Sunday’s enforcement actions.

“These are usually law enforcement-only operations,” said Raica, who’s practiced immigration law for 20 years.

“Generally, they want to restrict that access because they say it’s law enforcement sensitive and that it could reveal their methods of operation or how they conduct themselves. That it would be unsafe for the people they’re trying to detain.”

Indeed, a former federal law enforcement official who was based in Chicago said he wouldn’t have permitted a TV personality to have cameras rolling during an operation.

“We generally tried to stay out of the media’s attention … for a host of reasons,” said the former official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized by his current employer to speak to the press.

Those reasons include both safety concerns and “the humiliation issue.”

“We always took great pains to make sure nobody, regardless whether they were a public official, a law enforcement officer, a drug dealer or anybody else, (was) humiliated in a process of an arrest because that creates a whole host of other grievances that could emerge at the scene or down the line,” the former official said.

McGraw, who’s previously interviewed Homan at length, said officials took great care Sunday to ensure safety.

“Their No. 1 priority was safety of everybody involved, including the targets that they were arresting, and they were going to great lengths to make sure that they went about this operation in a way that provided the greatest degree and likelihood of safety for the people that were being arrested as well as the agents that were doing the detaining,” he said.

Still, videos from the incidents, especially those that involved McGraw, were surreal — and questionable.

During the exchange with the man who recognized McGraw as “Dr. Phil,” the TV personality continued asking questions of the man even after he mentions wanting to speak to a lawyer.

The clip posted to McGraw’s account on X, the social media platform formerly called Twitter, showed the man being questioned stood with his hands behind his back next to a law enforcement official.

Standing at McGraw’s side, Homan said:

“This is an example of sanctuary cities, right?” mentioning the policy Chicago and many other large cities have in which city agencies and local law enforcement do not cooperate with federal deportation authorities.

“We’ve got an illegal alien convicted of sex crimes involving children, and he’s walking the streets of Chicago,” Homan continued.

“You’ve been charged with sex crimes with children?” McGraw said.

“Not really,” the man said, shortly before Homan is seen on the video telling agents to “take him in, process him and lock him up.”

The questioning should have stopped as soon as the man mentioned wanting to speak to an attorney, the former federal official said.

“You have to cease and desist and let them get their lawyer,” the former official said.

While he’s “not a lawyer,” McGraw told the Tribune, “I wouldn’t think that would extend to me, but I suppose somebody could certainly ask the lawyers involved if that’s true.”

A representative of the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois also raised questions about the exchange.

“It is disturbing that high-level government officials stood idly by as a hand-picked media outlet sensationalized an arrest and attempted to gain admissions from a suspect even after he asked to speak to his lawyer,” ACLU of Illinois spokesman Ed Yohnka wrote in an email.

“If the administration thinks this sort of stunt will lend credibility to its operations, it is mistaken.”

Immigration enforcement, particularly the deportation of people who’ve committed major crimes, is serious business and should be treated as such, said David Axelrod, an adviser to former President Barack Obama.

Obama deported more people during his first term than Trump did during his, Axelrod noted, but “didn’t bring camera and film crews with him to mark the occasion.”

“Donald Trump is the greatest marketer, brander and self-promoter in history. … I wouldn’t take that away from him,” Axelrod said.

“But the spectacle of Dr. Phil on ICE raids is really … kind of a cheap reality show thing and detracts from the gravity and the seriousness of what this should be.”

“Spectacle” was also the word that came to mind for University of Illinois communications professor Stewart Coles.

“It’s no secret that Trump is personally obsessed with ratings, with popularity, with mass media,” said Coles, whose research includes the political effects of entertainment media.

With McGraw and cameras on hand, the administration’s highly publicized enforcement effort “turns into entertainment for, presumably, his supporters, that they see that he’s doing something about immigration.”

And while McGraw told the Tribune his goal was to document the “factual” and “actual,” there’s an array of unanswered questions in today’s fragmented media landscape about “what types of journalistic ethics are being followed here,” Coles said.

McGraw’s involvement, while “disturbing” and “abnormal,” “it’s also pointing to normalization,” said Heather Hendershot, a Northwestern University communications professor.

“It’s very strange to have a talk show host out with immigration officials, gathering people for potential deportation,” Hendershot said.

“That is completely inappropriate. It doesn’t make any sense, but it points to the ways that I fear that the Trump administration and its extremism and authoritarian inclinations are being kind of normalized this time around.”

Nubia Willman, former deputy chief of staff and current chief programs officer at Latinos Progresando, said she imagines “this second round, the federal administration will continue to look for ways to antagonize and scare Chicagoans in an attempt to deepen divides. Adding a TV personality to the mix is likely the first of many questionable decisions we will see as they attempt to vilify immigrants.”

Ald. Raymond Lopez, 15th, an outspoken critic of the city’s sanctuary status, appeared in an interview segment Sunday on McGraw’s Merit TV platform.

He hasn’t met McGraw but said “it’s very important to show who these targets are and to show why they are being pursued by the federal government.”

Lopez added he thinks local media also should have been invited to witness the deportation efforts.

“It’s crucial for all of us to share as much information, otherwise you have the rumor mill running rampant, spreading fear and hysteria,” said Lopez, who doesn’t support the deportation of immigrants without legal status who haven’t committed other crimes.

For some, though, the spotlight on Sunday’s actions instilled more fear.

A Venezuelan woman who said her name was Iseamary said she forced herself to go to work on Monday even though the messaging from Homan and McGraw scared her. She’s a single mom who lives on the South Side.

“But what if something happens to me?” she asked. “Then my son will have no one.”

Iseamary asked not to have her last name included because of the threat of deportation.

She said she normally takes the bus downtown, where she works cleaning hotels, she said.

“I’ve applied for asylum. And even though I have no legal papers yet, I keep my court documents on me at all times in case they stop me,” she said.

She said she watches the news and has heard that she needs to get a good lawyer. But because she doesn’t always have steady work, she said she doesn’t have the money to hire an attorney.

“I really don’t know what to do,” she said. “I don’t like hearing about what they’re doing to people.”

It is reasonable to wonder if love is always a good thing. For it’s many virtues, love compels many who feel it to act in ways that are thoroughly unsavory. It is a blinding emotion where thought and reason are often forsaken. Maybe that is why there is such a need to be in love. Thought and reason requires considered contemplation where as love operates almost exclusively on pure emotion.

And when people are driven by pure emotion, bad things happen.

Recently, a Daily Kos/Research 2000 Poll of 2,003 Republicans conducted this month has found that a little over a half (53 percent) actually believe Sarah Palin is more qualified to be president than Barack Obama. I know this may be impossible, but divorce how you feel about either of these people and evaluate both purely on their merits as if both were turning in faceless applications for the job of running the country. One candidate is a former beauty queen contestant that has a Bachelor of Science degree in communications-journalism (with a minor in political science) from the University of Idaho and the other is a graduate of Harvard Law School, magna cum laude and Columbia University with a BA in Political Science. One worked as a civil rights attorney and taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School before becoming a three-term senator from one of the most populated states in the union and the other served on city council in Wasilla, Alaska (population 5,469) later becoming the Mayor of city and eventually governor of the state a position the applicant resigned from before the end of their term. Based on this information alone, which of these two applicants would you hire to run the country? Is it even close? If it is, if you are actually in a quandary over who is the most qualified of the two, well, I don’t know what to say.

Obviously, judging qualified candidates isn’t your forte.

People love Sarah Palin. I think this because a lot of her followers want to fuck her. When I went to the Palin rally at the Richmond International Raceway in October of 2008, I overheard more people talking about her physical attributes than her potential governing ability. Many seemed to be enamored with her solely because of her fuckability. And it is because of these lustful urges that the true devotees of all things Palin can not view her objectively even when her rhetoric and actions are in direct conflict with their romanticized image of her and the movement she come to represent. At the first Tea Party Convention held last week in Nashville, the populist movement turned out to be big money politics as usual. The convention was held at the upscale Gaylord Opryland Hotel, charged $550 for admission and organizers of the event (the for-profit Tennessee corporation Tea Party Nation headed by Nashville-based criminal-defense lawyer Judson Phillips) have been accused of secrecy and corruption by the very people it claims to speak for, threatened lawsuits against dissenters unhappy about the direction of the event and overall movement. When some voiced their dissatisfaction with the event, their ire was not directed at Sarah Palin despite her reported and decidedly un-grass rootsy $100,000 speaking fee that resulted in $349 per-ticket cost to people who wanted to attend the speech. If anything, any reasonable criticism of her frightening lack of competence only strengthens the irrationality of the love they feel for her. "I doubt there is another public figure in our country who gives liberals a bigger case of the hives than our special guest today," Texas Gov. Rick Perry said at a campaign rally on Super Bowl Sunday in his introduction for Palin who is endorsing the governor in the upcoming election, "At the very mention of her name, the liberals, the progressives, the media elites, they literally foam at the mouth." That’s a pretty strange proclamation of someone’s worth, isn’t it? If the ability to offend is the yardstick by which someone’s worth is measured, then I know a lot people who are stellar individuals, but the larger question is this; Is that rage, that frothing of the mouth of which Perry and other Palin enthusiasts site as her defining attribute really just a perfectly justifiable response when reasonable people are confronted with something ethically repugnant? Like someone who keeps sticking his dick in a blender after they’ve been told what irreparable physical harm it will cause them, they cling to their bloody stump logic that Sarah Palin is what our country needs.

But that’s love for you. It sometimes makes people stupid.
