From “The New Children’s Crusade: Recruiting for America’s Culture War” by Texas Observer McHam Investigative Fellow Josephine Lee, in the March/April 2023 issue of our magazine:
Wearing a blue America First cap, 19-year-old Max White stood among a dozen protesters, softly mouthing the Hail Mary prayers over and over: “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.”
Around White flew the flags of right-wing extremist groups, including the American Nationalist Initiative and the New Columbia Movement, carried by men who looked to be in their 20s, strapped with rosaries or assault rifles or both. On a cloudless January day in Dallas, they faced off against a group of nearly 100 community members who showed up to support the drag show performance that White and his peers were protesting.
“I started going to these events last year, starting with the Pride event in Oak Lawn. … I was like, ‘If these people are going to go and protest this kind of stuff, just perverse sexual stuff for kids, I’m going,’” he said.
Tumblr media
Since he was 16, White has been following young white-supremacist agitator Nick Fuentes and groups like Protect Texas Kids, which has been targeting drag shows in North Texas, including the one that day in Dallas. The organization was founded and is directed by recent college graduate Kelly Neidert, who achieved notoriety by calling for transgender people to be criminalized and Pride event participants to be “rounded up” while she was the chapter chair of the Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) at the University of North Texas in Denton. Now she is using the activism skills she learned from YCT to lead other young conservatives like White, a freshman political science major who hopes to become a lawyer one day.
“You have all these groups that are weaponizing young people in ways that we really haven’t seen before,” conservative political consultant Micah Bock told a group of teenagers and younger children to thunderous applause at last fall’s Texas Youth Summit. As he spoke, young girls at the front of the crowd took notes with their pom-pom pens bobbing.
It’s all part of a nationwide effort by multiple well-funded groups, many of which originated or are based in Texas, to mobilize young people, mainly Christian youth, to engage in right-wing politics. These groups and their leaders are part of a roll-call of Christian nationalist power players who defend the January 6 riots, promote hate speech, and aim to build their economic and political power by instilling Christian and constitutional “originalism” in the public sphere. To achieve their goals, they are increasingly defending the use of violence, particularly anti-LGBTQ+ violence, which has shot up in frequency since the start of 2022.
Tumblr media
What’s more, the leaders of the movement are set on convincing young people, starting even before high school, that they are the underdogs in this fight—the under-funded rebels fighting a rich, powerful leftist establishment–and that what they’re engaged in is a holy war for America’s soul.
The movement is meeting opposition from more progressive Christian leaders.
“What I think they really are concerned about is their loss of a privileged place in terms of influence and power. I think Christian nationalism is being used as a tool to maintain and to galvanize that power,” said Fort Worth Pastor Michael Mills, an outspoken critic of that movement.
“It feels a little bit like a form of indoctrination [in which] these poisonous ideas are passed from one generation to the next,” he said. “If there are no checks on that, it’s almost like, [as] each generation gets older, they get more and more dangerous, in a sense. And that’s the scary part.”

What Contributes To Fort Worth TX Real Estate Market Boom?
Fort Worth TX is a booming real estate market. It is a seller’s market which shows that more people want to buy a property than what is available. With the demand higher than the supply, the future's looking brighter for the real estate sector of the economy.
Fort Worth TX Strategic Location
Only about one hour from Dallas, Fort Worth TX, is also close to New Orleans and a gateway to Mexico. Its strategic location makes it a melting pot of people wanting to enjoy the comfort and amenities at a lower price. The influx of people offers more opportunities in real estate, the food industry, tourism, sports, businesses, and infrastructure.
The increase of population through migration saw the need for more housing facilities. So the growth of high-rise condominiums, apartments, and housing units. But there are also affluent and famous people who choose to live in Fort Worth TX. So there is also a growth of luxury homes, mansions, and manors with beautiful architectural designs that complement the city.
Oil And Gas Industry In Fort Worth TX
The local industries allow people to relocate to the city with the offer of housing benefits. So, more demand for housing facilities from the real estate sector. In turn, it creates more jobs resulting in a domino effect for the economy. The more people settling in the city, the more job openings and business transactions to make. There is also a demand for amenities such as the gym, hospitals and clinics, parks, amusement centers, theaters, museums, sports centers, malls, shopping centers, restaurants, hotels, and more.
The main industry of Fort Worth TX is oil and gas. It includes petroleum refining, production, transport, and marketing. So they need different types of employees such as rank and file, contractual, seasonal, project-based, and regular. It translates to additional housing facilities from the real estate market.
Fort Worth TX Tourism Draws Young Adults
When a local tourist comes for a visit and is so impressed, he may want to stay for good. He may decide to look for a job while in the city. Then when hired, he may look for a suitable place to buy or rent. So another real estate transaction to complete.
There are several types of tourism that Fort Worth TX  offers:
Sports tourism.
Educational tourism.
Arts and culture tourism.
Business tourism.
Countryside tourism.
Health and wellness tourism.
To run this multifaceted industry needs skilled and knowledgeable people. Those who work in tourism and hospitality are young adults. They come to the city because of these attractive job opportunities. Also, the number of jobs is more than enough for the locals, so the management hires staff from other states.
Or, it may need a skilled employee and has to import from neighboring places. So, local migration occurs that needs an abode. Real estate is booming when the economy is booming. Economic progress requires the construction of more houses, apartments, or condominiums.
Let the figures speak for themselves. According to the official website of Fort Worth TX, 9.4 million people visit yearly. This figure results in 2.4 billion annual indirect or direct earnings. Also, the tourism industry creates more than 20,000 jobs and provides $598 tax relief for every household.
Insights On Fort Worth TX Housing Boom
When the population grows, there is a corresponding demand for housing and amenities. The influx of people because of the city’s strategic location, manufacturing, and processing industries, and tourism give rise to the construction of additional residences to meet the demand of the real estate market.

Forced masking returns to Tarrant County after municipal judge removes unmasked defendant
Leaked Audio: Forced COVID Masking Lives On In Tarrant County
Tumblr media
Mask Required sign outside Fort Worth Courtroom | Image by Carlos Turcios/The Dallas Express
EXCLUSIVE — Dreaded COVID mask mandates appear to be back in a Fort Worth courthouse.
A Fort Worth municipal court judge recently demanded a defendant be removed from a hearing for refusing to wear a facemask, audio provided to The Dallas Express reveals.
“You either can walk out of here right now, or as many people as it takes, but they are going to take you out,” Fort Worth Municipal Court Judge Robert Neel McDonald told a defendant in the audio.
The defendant retorted: “Yeah, I’m not going to wear a mask. I’m not going to play this game.”
DX is omitting the defendant’s name to prevent any retaliation.
Judge McDonald is an associate judge of the Fort Worth Municipal Court, having been first appointed to the bench in 2006.
The City of Fort Worth’s website says, “He brings a broad array of experience as a trial and appellate litigator in both civil and criminal courtrooms all over the State of Texas.”
MASK REQUIRED BEFORE ENTERING A COURTROOM.”
DX witnessed everyone inside the courtroom — the judge, courtroom employees, lawyers, and defendants — wearing facemasks.
A Fort Worth court employee confirmed to The Dallas Express that everyone entering McDonald’s courtroom was required to wear a facemask.
However, this requirement seems to fly in the face of state law.
Texas Senate Bill 29, which went into effect on September 1, 2023, banned COVID mask mandates, vaccination requirements, and municipal orders forcing businesses to close, as covered previously in The Dallas Express.
Some, such as the author of the bill, Sen. Brian Birdwell (R-Granbury), applauded its passing.
“3yrs after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, cities across the nation continue to impose a hodgepodge of restrictive COVID-19 mandates,” Birdwell wrote on X.
However, some suggested at the time that the measure wasn’t strong enough to provide a comprehensive ban on mask mandates.

Fort Worth mayor wants municipal court to drop forced-masking rule that may violate law
Tumblr media
Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker said she is taking action against a forced-masking rule imposed on a municipal courtroom, which is likely violating state law.
As previously reported by The Dallas Express, Fort Worth Municipal Court Associate Judge Robert Neel McDonald required everyone who set foot in his courtroom to wear a facemask.
He even removed a defendant from their hearing because they refused to put on a mask.
A sign outside the courtroom read, “MASK REQUIRED BEFORE ENTERING A COURTROOM.”
A court employee confirmed to DX that everyone entering McDonald’s courtroom was required to wear a facemask.
“I’ve requested the signs come down — I was unaware they were even up. No masks are required in any City of Fort Worth buildings as it’s clearly prohibited by state law after the passage of SB29 (2023),” Parker tweeted on Friday.
SB 29, which went into effect on September 1, 2023, prohibits state and local governmental entities from imposing COVID-related mask mandates, vaccination requirements, and municipal orders forcing businesses to close, as covered previously by DX.
“Requested? Demanded! How did this go on with no officials stopping it Mattie? That defendant needs a different judge,” an X user named David Medlin commented in response to Parker’s announcement.
In a different thread, someone with the X handle @jehosephanny wrote, “Um, isn’t that unconstitutional? How’s it the judge’s courtroom? Taxpayers paid for it for God’s sake.”
McDonald serves as an associate judge.
He was appointed to the bench in 2006.
In addition to trying misdemeanor and felony cases, he is also the presiding judge of the city’s “Environmental Court, hearing cases involving all manner of alleged violations of the Fort Worth Municipal Code Ordinances, among other cases,” according to the City of Fort Worth.
Forced masking was one of several measures imposed across Texas and elsewhere in the U.S. during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
While supporters of such rules argued that they were necessary to reduce transmission of the virus and prevent hospitals from becoming overloaded at the height of the pandemic, opponents countered by citing the disease’s low mortality rate and detrimental impact on the economy and children’s education.
As previously reported by DX, some private healthcare entities started re-imposing masking and vaccine requirements last year ahead of the flu season.
The measures, falling outside the bounds of SB 29, prompted some state lawmakers to call on Gov. Greg Abbott to convene a special session to enact legislation prohibiting such rules.
Tumblr media
Rep. Brian Harrison (R-Midlothian) introduced legislation during last year’s regular session that would have prohibited private COVID-19 vaccine mandates.
Tumblr media
Joined by Sen. Mayes Middleton (R-Galveston), the bill would have ensured Texans retained the ability to give or withhold consent for medical treatments.
While the bill passed the Senate, the legislation died in the House under Speaker Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont) after the Calendars Committee kicked it down the road and allowed the session to end before calling it to a vote.
Fort Worth court requiring facemasks exposes loophole in Texas' anti-mask mandate law
Law Protecting People From Mask Mandates May Have Loophole
A loophole in Texas’ anti-mask mandate law may have been revealed after a Fort Worth municipal court imposed facemask requirements.
Associate Judge Robert McDonald was exposed for mandating masks in his courtroom.
Tumblr media
Sarah Fields, the president and director of advocacy for the Texas Freedom Coalition, pointed out on X that authorities do not have a meaningful mechanism by which to enforce the state law prohibiting such masking measures.
Tumblr media
“Texas Senate Bill 29, which went into effect on September 1, 2023, banned COVID mask mandates, vaccination requirements, and municipal orders that had forced businesses to close.
I have contacted AG Ken Paxton’s office and my fears were confirmed.
Ken Paxton is currently trying to decide the best course of action, however[,] the statute, as is the case most often, prohibits mask mandates but FAILS to include an enforcement mechanism,” Fields posted.
“Bills MUST have a badge and a gun behind it or it is a useless, toothless bill. (And it has to specify if it goes to law enforcement or the attorney generals office),” she added.
SB 29 was criticized last year by Rep. Brian Harrison (R-Midlothian). He voted for the bill, calling it “fine,” but questioned how effective it would actually be.
“Is there a single COVID mandate that SB 29 will end? Probably not,” Harrison told The Texas Tribune.
He also noted that private vaccine mandates were “alive and well in Texas” and the state “should be leading the fight against the COVID tyranny.”
The recent controversy over the Fort Worth court mask mandate stemmed from a recording that revealed that the judge expelled a defendant from proceedings for refusing to wear a mask.
“You either can walk out of here right now, or as many people as it takes, but they are going to take you out,” Fort Worth Municipal Court Judge Robert Neel McDonald told a defendant in the audio.
The defendant retorted, “Yeah, I’m not going to wear a mask. I’m not going to play this game.”
A sign outside the courtroom read, “MASK REQUIRED BEFORE ENTERING A COURTROOM.”
A municipal court employee confirmed to DX that everyone entering McDonald’s courtroom was required to wear a facemask.
The mask requirement prompted Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker to take action.
“I’ve requested the signs come down — I was unaware they were even up. No masks are required in any City of Fort Worth buildings as it’s clearly prohibited by state law after the passage of SB29 (2023),” Parker tweeted on Friday.

An Overview of the Texas Criminal Laws
Most of the criminal laws in Texas can be found in the Texas Penal Code (TPC). As in other states, the laws establishing criminal conduct in Texas are exclusively set forth in statutes, written laws enacted by the state legislature. To be criminally prosecuted for any offense, you must be alleged to be in violation of a criminal statute. The TPC identifies the different criminal offenses as either misdemeanors or felonies, and generally establishes the potential penalties for conviction. The Texas Penal Code sets forth the elements of a wide range of crimes, from assault to white collar crime, from drug offenses to sex crimes, drinking and driving, criminal fraud or misrepresentation, theft crimes, burglary, robbery and cyber/computer-related crimes.

DWI Laws in Texas | Fort Worth DWI Attorneys
Texas is a highly-conservative state when it comes to its laws regarding driving while intoxicated (DWI) and the consequences of violating these laws. The statutes are pretty straight-forward about the core elements of the DWI offense under 49.04.
The state must prove that the person was:
operating a motor vehicle;
in a public place;
while intoxicated.
“Operating a motor vehicle” has been interpreted broadly by Texas criminal trial and appellate courts. There have been many decisions by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals that allow for this element to be proved without any evidence that the individual was actually driving the vehicle.  In some cases, our Fort Worth DWI defense firm will challenge the state’s definition of “operation” and persuade a jury that the evidence is not sufficient to prove that “operation” occurred.
It’s also common for police officers to make mistakes when determining they have reasonable suspicion to stop a vehicle. If a police officer determines he has reasonable suspicion that a traffic violation has occurred, he can stop the vehicle. Once the officer smells the faintest odor of alcohol, sees an open container, receives an admission that the person has consumed ANY amount of alcohol, he or she will likely commence an investigation for DWI.
A “public place” is any place to which the public or a significant portion of the public has a access. See Penal Code 1.07(40) This can include parking lots, in addition to roadways.
In most circumstances, the element at issue in a driving while intoxicated case is “intoxication.” The state can prove intoxication by
The Fort Worth DWI attorneys at Barnett Howard & Williams PLLC are trained in DWI detection techniques and procedures and can challenge officer testimony using their very training manuals.
Standardized Field Sobriety Tests | Tarrant County DWI Lawyers
When determining the loss of normal use of mental or physical faculties, field sobriety tests (FST’s) are tools used by law enforcement to seek clues of intoxication. See  for more details. These tests include the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, the walk and turn test, and the one leg stand test.
These tests are 100% voluntary. You cannot be compelled to do them if you choose to refrain. As with most of the DWI investigation process, law enforcement agencies have developed ways to assist them with evidence-gathering in DWI cases. However, they require voluntary participation by the accused. Without them, the ability to prove DWI cases beyond a reasonable doubt can be much more difficult. The 5th amendment provides us with the right to remain silent. Always keep in mind, anything you say or do in these situations could be used against you in court. The NHTSA Manual provides that the SFSTs can be compromised if one element of any test is not conducted properly. Our Tarrant County DWI lawyers know how to challenge the field sobriety tests in court.
Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus Test (HGN)
The horizontal gaze nystagmus (HGN) test is the first of the three tests normally administered by the police officer. Some research has shown HGN can be caused by the introduction of alcohol or some drugs into the body. The HGN test is designed to reveal to the officer whether the involuntary jerking of the eyeballs which occurs as a result of HGN is present in someone suspected of DWI.
When performing the field sobriety test for HGN, there are three manipulations performed on both eyeballs. They specifically test for:
Because they perform these 3 manipulations on each eyeball, there is a maximum possibility of six clues on the HGN test.  Most DUI attorneys understand that HGN evidence is confusing to a jury and typically not helpful to the state in proving the case.

It is reasonable to wonder if love is always a good thing. For it’s many virtues, love compels many who feel it to act in ways that are thoroughly unsavory. It is a blinding emotion where thought and reason are often forsaken. Maybe that is why there is such a need to be in love. Thought and reason requires considered contemplation where as love operates almost exclusively on pure emotion.
And when people are driven by pure emotion, bad things happen.
Recently, a Daily Kos/Research 2000 Poll of 2,003 Republicans conducted this month has found that a little over a half (53 percent) actually believe Sarah Palin is more qualified to be president than Barack Obama. I know this may be impossible, but divorce how you feel about either of these people and evaluate both purely on their merits as if both were turning in faceless applications for the job of running the country. One candidate is a former beauty queen contestant that has a Bachelor of Science degree in communications-journalism (with a minor in political science) from the University of Idaho and the other is a graduate of Harvard Law School, magna cum laude and Columbia University with a BA in Political Science. One worked as a civil rights attorney and taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School before becoming a three-term senator from one of the most populated states in the union and the other served on city council in Wasilla, Alaska (population 5,469) later becoming the Mayor of city and eventually governor of the state a position the applicant resigned from before the end of their term. Based on this information alone, which of these two applicants would you hire to run the country? Is it even close? If it is, if you are actually in a quandary over who is the most qualified of the two, well, I don’t know what to say.
Obviously, judging qualified candidates isn’t your forte.
People love Sarah Palin. I think this because a lot of her followers want to fuck her. When I went to the Palin rally at the Richmond International Raceway in October of 2008, I overheard more people talking about her physical attributes than her potential governing ability. Many seemed to be enamored with her solely because of her fuckability. And it is because of these lustful urges that the true devotees of all things Palin can not view her objectively even when her rhetoric and actions are in direct conflict with their romanticized image of her and the movement she come to represent. At the first Tea Party Convention held last week in Nashville, the populist movement turned out to be big money politics as usual. The convention was held at the upscale Gaylord Opryland Hotel, charged $550 for admission and organizers of the event (the for-profit Tennessee corporation Tea Party Nation headed by Nashville-based criminal-defense lawyer Judson Phillips) have been accused of secrecy and corruption by the very people it claims to speak for, threatened lawsuits against dissenters unhappy about the direction of the event and overall movement. When some voiced their dissatisfaction with the event, their ire was not directed at Sarah Palin despite her reported and decidedly un-grass rootsy $100,000 speaking fee that resulted in $349 per-ticket cost to people who wanted to attend the speech. If anything, any reasonable criticism of her frightening lack of competence only strengthens the irrationality of the love they feel for her. "I doubt there is another public figure in our country who gives liberals a bigger case of the hives than our special guest today," Texas Gov. Rick Perry said at a campaign rally on Super Bowl Sunday in his introduction for Palin who is endorsing the governor in the upcoming election, "At the very mention of her name, the liberals, the progressives, the media elites, they literally foam at the mouth." That’s a pretty strange proclamation of someone’s worth, isn’t it? If the ability to offend is the yardstick by which someone’s worth is measured, then I know a lot people who are stellar individuals, but the larger question is this; Is that rage, that frothing of the mouth of which Perry and other Palin enthusiasts site as her defining attribute really just a perfectly justifiable response when reasonable people are confronted with something ethically repugnant? Like someone who keeps sticking his dick in a blender after they’ve been told what irreparable physical harm it will cause them, they cling to their bloody stump logic that Sarah Palin is what our country needs.
But that’s love for you. It sometimes makes people stupid.

Criminal Defense Lawyer - Choosing the Right One
Choosing and employing a criminal defense lawyer early on in any case is the best way to increase one's probability of success in any criminal trial. Many of the more prominent people in society already have a battery of lawyers at their behest that spring into action whenever any legal problem arises.
You may not be one of these high profile people, and you may not have employed an attorney as of yet because a) you do not really have a need for them yet or b) they are, of course, too expensive to just have on hand. But even given this you will have to keep in mind that in the case of an impending criminal trial, choosing and hiring a good lawyer early on is your top priority.
In fact, the outcome of your entire case may even hinge on whether this single matter alone. If you hire a lawyer early on, there is a chance that, due to his or her timely actions, there will be no need for any case and trial at all. You might just be able to dodge the bullet on time.
Your choice of lawyer can also affect the amount and quality of evidence that is allowable by law to police and investigators. This alone is reason enough to hire good lawyers with good grasp of such kinds of investigation practice. If you have been watching enough trial TV, you will notice that many trials drag on endlessly only to argue whether an evidence is acceptable in the court of law.
This is important because some cases decisions all depend on sometimes just one piece of crucial evidence in a case. If you do not have expert advice this early in the ball game then you might have just lost your case right on the outset.
Whether or not you are in a bind to find a good criminal defense lawyer, it would be good to keep in mind these pointers on determining a good Miami Criminal Defense Lawyer.
Lawyer Specialization
Look at the lawyer's background. Does he or she have specialization in criminal defense? Just because on is an attorney does not mean that he or she automatically qualifies as a good criminal defense lawyer.
Lawyers are a lot like doctors. And the legal field is pretty much similar to the medical field. There is a host of specializations and fortes making having one lawyer adept at all close to impossible. And in the same wise that you wouldn't trust a brain operation on a dermatologist, you should stick to a defense crime lawyer when you need such representation in cases.
Also look at past case performance to see if the lawyer is fit to represent you fully in your case. If the lawyer has had experience in cases similar to yours, and has been able to perform well and respectably, then that would be a good thing to look out for.
Try Him for the First 30 Minutes
You will probably decide whether the lawyer is worth it during the first 30 minutes of meeting the person. While the first few minutes of meeting will not give you an accurate gauge of the lawyer's services, it will still give you enough information to decide whether the person should represent you at all.
Pay close attention to how the lawyer listens to you during the initial interview. Does the lawyer listen intently paying close attention to details and asking pertinent questions at crucial junctures? Or is the lawyer just blowing by the interview and missing important details?
Look at the lawyer's body language as well; you will be able to find out whether he or she is interested in the case itself. If the lawyer is showing a little boredom at your case, then it would be safe to consider other lawyers for the practice - unless the particular lawyer is a known genius and pulls through even with such demeanor.
However, if you want to play safe, then it would be a good bet to find a lawyer the listens intently, is interested in your case, and is not aloof and overbearing in dealing with you.
Don't Be Afraid to Ask Questions
Do not, at all costs, be afraid to ask questions. Matters such as bills, scope of the case, payment details, and other matters should not be an esoteric exercise. Everything should be transparent and open.
Your lawyer should not tire of explaining and elucidating legal terms and strategies regarding your case. It is your head, after all, that is on the line. The lawyer should cooperate and interact with you on the case.

New JFK Documents Show State Bar's Ire for Melvin Belli
Tumblr media
Long-lost documents related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy are always fascinating when they are revealed — regardless of their association with a conspiracy.
And a 1966 case file recently discovered by the Tarrant County District Clerk's Office proves one thing:
Tumblr media
The State Bar of Texas disliked San Francisco lawyer Melvin Belli — so much that it took steps to ensure that he could never practice in the Lone Star State's courts again after defending Jack Ruby of murder in 1964.
Tumblr media
The case file, State Bar of Texas v. Belli, was discovered earlier this month by clerks who are the process of digitizing all of the county's old case files for storage purposes, said Tarrant County district clerk Tom Wilder.
Wilder said that while most paper cases of that vintage are eventually discarded, cases like Belli are saved for their historical value.
"In reading the pleadings, it seemed like it was just an attempt to take a whack at Melvin Belli," Wilder said.
Tumblr media
The pleading, filed in May 1966 in Tarrant County's 96th District Court, was filed there because Belli apparently had a case pending in that court at the time.
Tumblr media
The pleading, filed by the bar's then general counsel, Davis Grant, alleged that Belli was not a "reputable" attorney and therefore should not be allowed to practice in the court under the state bar's rules of admission.
The source of the bar's ire, according to the pleadings, were the numerous colorful statements Belli gave to a hungry press after Ruby was convicted of murder for killing presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald.
Many of the statements concerned Belli's distaste for Texas' criminal justice system — in my appearance in the Ruby case, both particular Dallas District Judge Joe B. Brown, who presided over Ruby's trial.
